Snowcats produced by DeLorean (and diesel fuel) are keeping our phones working! Fuel choice is important even for cell towers. Ford's CEO Jim Farley praises the Chinese Xiaomi SU7 he drove for months. Ford also admits EREVs are more useful & profitable than EVs for America. Listeners from Djibouti to Jakarta. Bill's customer squeezing every mile from reliable Sienna, but even Toyota can have teething problems with new engine. Lesson for buyers? Can a late pivot to EREV save Mopar and inject missing soul? Disposable cars and flawed parts are frustrating the process of repairing. Chinese cars like Buick Envision, Lincoln Nautilus and Polestar are sneakily creeping into the US market. Driving an EREV 100 miles with no motor oil is fine? Aftermarket adapters are not safe.
We have two special guests on the show - Analog and Grit member Mark Nasal joins us for the first time to talk about his cheap sub $1,000 Facebook Marketplace Mercedes-Benz finds. Christian G just returned from Radwood Socal and shares his thoughts on the show, comparing it to Monterey Car Week. We discuss how CA car culture is the best in the world.
Fatality rate per vehicle has little to do with safety ratings. Cheap Hyundai & costly Tesla, Porsche and Corvette are notable. Unintentional damage by owners is costly. Why driving habits will cost $$. Pocket $940k in savings with one decision. Why oil changes are more important than they were 25 years ago. Bill sees the unintended consequences of relying on sensors. Chinese parts and cars infiltrating. Scout blazes trail with ICE generator option, and 80% opt for it. Toyota rocky road to success today. Could a revvy, loud, lopey V-twin serve as generator in a roadster to instill soul and emotion?
All three off us were at RADwood SoCal. We talk about how it's evolved from when we started RADwood back in 2017, and we go over some of the standout cars from the show.
Aftermarket warranties a bad bet? Good, fresh oil more critical than ever despite advances in engines. VVT, turbos, GDI and low-friction rings are picky. Are new car prices actually out of line relative to the 1980s? Ford, GM, Honda and more backtrack on EV plans. We love to hear from you! CarsThePodcast@gmail.com
Model T. MINI. Beetle. Cybertruck? Iconic products rarely spring from focus groups. Reason #996 not to buy any all-new model. All non-Tesla public charging is still a hot mess. Dealers are eager to maximize what you "qualify for"; That is not your objective. An experienced mechanic is worth consulting before a car purchase. An upgrade can shock you later with high replacement costs.

Good news, everyone! Episode 42 is here! We're kicking off this week's episode recounting our highlights from the Oblivion Car & Culture show last weekend. If you haven't been yet, you're missing out: this show celebrates not just the cars, but all things 80s and 90s. It's the only place you'll probably see a Ferrari Testarossa sandwiched between a Nissan Stanza and a Dustbuster. Oh, and we obviously brought a bunch of our own — and our friends' — cool toys from the 80s and 90s. Plus, Nick is in the short-wheelbase 2024 Range Rover SV this week. It's a positively sumptuous behemoth carrying a $300,000 price tag, but is it really worth it? Nathan and Imran — who recently spent some time with a long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography and a Range Rover Sport PHEV, respectively — chime in. Enjoy the show? Alex and Beck talk about usernames versus real names; the benefits of slow evolution and low staff turnover; the downside of not seeing one's coworkers often; the community and variety that make a BaT Alumni Gathering magic (coming up in Pittsburgh and California!); the appropriate qualifications to pick the coolest Corvette; showering awards upon a rental Viper RT/10; Radwood over the years; calling every front-engine Porsche a 928 just to irk Beck; the various ways to repower a VW Type 2; Zora Arkus-Duntov; the struggle to not talk Porsches at every opportunity, reinforced once again shortly thereafter; favorite automotive tuners; the best-looking fastbacks; the most compelling color names; and the most desirable of history's automotive factories to go back in time and visit. More than just a car show, Radwood is a time-period event — with music, costumes, and cars from the 1980s and 1990s. Derek Tam-Scott and Jason Cammisa attended the 2023 Norcal Radwood, which took place in downtown San Francisco for the first time — on a storied pier overlooking the city. The show's fascination is about far more than just the typical, expensive cars you see at Concours d'Elegance and such - it's filled with attainable stuff, including cars that were once ubiquitous but now are gone. Things like a perfect-condition Isuzu VehiCross, a pristine Previa, or a showroom Chevrolet Cavalier convertible. Jason brought out their new-to-the-Carmudgeons 1980 Rover 3500 (SD1), freshly back from its Canadian road trip home, and Derek brought his magnificent Citroën CX, which delighted the audience with its self-raising hydropneumatic suspension. But what were the stars of the show? You'll have to listen to find out. == The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Has any automotive facelift ever made a car better than its original design? This episode of the Carmudgeon show is sponsored by Lucid Motors, who has special lease and finance offers on available 2023 models of the Lucid Air Touring and Grand Touring. Visit lucidmotors.com for offer details. What Carmudgeon episode would complete without a discussion of Bruno Sacco's Mercedes masterpieces, including the W201, W124, W140, and R129? Then, there's the Ferrari lineage: 246 Dino to 308 GTB to 328 GTB to 348 tb to F355. And perhaps the most successful facelift ever, the Bangle-Butt BMW E65/E66 7-series — which was vastly more successful in showrooms after BMW"s "LCI," or "Life Cycle Impulse," BMW-speak for a facelift. There's the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf, with the Clipper Kit Cabriolet and the Citi versions, the BMW E30, the Jaguar Series III to XJ40 to X300 to X308. And what if all the Radwood-era cars only got prettier because of relaxed and harmonized bumper standards, like the W116 Mercedes S-Class did when it was replaced with the W126. Discussed is also the Lamborghini Countach, Renault R5 Turbo, Lancia Integrale and Evo. And of course the Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio, turned into the Testarossa, the 512TR, and ultimately 512M. How about BMW's prime era of the E38 and E39 and E46? The original Chevrolet Cavalier? The ovoid Taurus? Or just the Miata NC Miata, in NC1, NC2, and NC3 revisions? It's all an interesting discussion and a fun brain-dump from two curmudgeonly car experts, one of whom probably needs a facelift himself soon. === The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. Now that the Bring-a-Trailer crowd have made 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s cars unaffordable, what happens to pre-1980s cars? Do they just fall out of favor like today's pre-war and brass-era cars? Or is the solution to get younger generations of car enthusiasts interested in pre 1980s cars? And then, how do you best preserve the cars of true interest from those periods so that younger generations can continue to have the option to be interested in them in the first place?
