I'm SUPER excited about this week's episode because I am speaking to the G.O.A.T of the child feeding world, Dr. Katja Rowell. Katja is an author and child feeding specialist with a passion for supporting parents in helping their children to do their best with eating and to relate to their bodies in positive ways. In this episode, we cover topics like; The difference between regular old picky eating and look at some red flags for when kids or families maybe need a little more support with eating How if you feel like there's a problem and you could do with support and reassurance then that in and of itself is enough of a red flag that you should reach out for help Whether or not it's helpful to pursue a diagnosis around eating difficulties Problems associated with some more conventional feeding therapies or programmes and why Katja and I prefer to work in a way that is less prescriptive and more responsive Values of responsive feeding therapy and talk about what they look like in action Some of the pitfalls perhaps in teaching kids to listen to their tummies, if our agenda is to get kids to eat less. Felt safety, what that means and how we can foster it at mealtimes. Responsive Feeding is a model that is both high structure and high nurture, which ultimately allows for a lot of flexibility. It's back to school season, and whatever relief we felt to reclaim the routine and structure of school days has probably given way to remember that school weeks are stressful too, particularly when it comes to feeding, school lunches, tired kids, and stressed parents! In today's episode, Canadian dietitian Terri Ney, RD (sounds like "high," not "hay") shares some encouragement and practical tips for parents around school lunches and other common school day feeding challenges. She has lots of specific suggestions for making school days and school lunches easier. We talk about the age old debate around packed lunch vs. school hot lunch, highlighting a privilege many Americans take for granted (Canadians do not currently have a school lunch program, despite lots of advocacy effort). And Katherine and Terri can't help but wander into the subject of food moralizing messages at school, why they aren't great, and what to do when you face this in your own kids' school. Most kids have some type of picky eating behavior, but for some kids, their picky eating seems out of the norm and over the top, making meal and snack times difficult—maybe even impossible. Perhaps they refuse to try new foods or refuse to eat vegetables altogether. Maybe they get upset at mealtimes, or have meltdowns before parties or social gatherings because of the food or the pressure to eat. Either way, extreme picky eating can cause kids and their parents a lot of stress and anxiety. In this episode, I sat down with Jenny McGlothlin, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, a certified speech-language pathologist and certified lactation counselor specializing in the evaluation and treatment of feeding disorders for children and teens, and the co-author of, “Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating.” Jenny and I talked about what's normal for kids when it comes to picky eating, how to tell if your kid is an “extreme" picky eater, how to take the focus off nutrition and create a positive food environment, and so much more. Encouraging your kids to eat their vegetables and try new foods is no easy feat. On this week's episode of the Less Stressed Life podcast, Katja Rowell, MD, author of Helping your child with extreme picky eating, joins me to tackle the topic of how to establish a healthy feeding relationship between parents, children, and food. Dr. Rowell shares her expertise on being a mom, not a food cop. She talks about how neutralization around foods is in and bribery is out, the one-bite rule, and whether our kiddos will be forever obsessed with sweets. In this very special episode, I interview a family practice physician who is an expert at feeding children who have extreme food selectivity. I really loved her book, Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating: A Step-by-Step Guide for Overcoming Selective Eating, Food Aversion, and Feeding Disorders because it was very compassionate, loving and practical. After reading her book, I knew she would be a perfect guest for the Intuitive Eating series on Veggie Doctor Radio. AT Parenting Survival Podcast: Parenting | Child Anxiety | Child OCD | Kids & Family
Dealing with extreme picky eating can be a lonely journey. Barely anyone gets it. People will tell you all sorts of things. Some to lift you up and some to tear you down, but neither wind up being helpful. He won’t starve to death You should force him to eat (as if it was just that easy!) If he was my child… (that’s never a good sentence) Aren’t all kids kind of picky? You let her eat just that?! Ugh. I could go on and on. But it brings back too many bad memories. Kids have extreme picky eating for a variety of reasons. They can have sensory issues, fears of choking, mechanical and structural issues, intrusive thoughts around food… the list can go on and on. But often, we all have one common goal between us. We want our kids to eat. We want our kids to be healthy. This week on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast, I have invited my friend and go-to picky eating expert, Alisha Grogan, Pediatric OT, to talk to us about the difference between typical picky eating and extreme picky eating. She also has a free workshop series out this week that runs from 9/17/19 to 9/24/19 called The 2-Step Process for Moving Your Child from Picky Eater to Healthy Child. Click here to enroll now before it goes away. She is awesome: www.bit.ly/pickyeatingworkshop19 She offered some really good insight into picky eating in this episode!***This podcast is for informational purposes only and should not be used to replace the guidance of a qualified professional.Interested in my AT Parenting Community Membership? Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Food issues are very common with adopted and foster children and are one of the most frequent concerns adoptive and foster parents have. We will address common food issues and provide practical suggestions for parents to implement to help their child. Host Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national adoption & foster care education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. Katja Rowell, The Feeding Doctor, and author of Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating and Love Me, Feed Me as well as Kate Miller, Feeding and Disability Specialist at SPOON, an NGO focused on eradicating malnutrition for children who are isolated from their communities due to a disability and those living in orphanages and foster care.Support the show (https://creatingafamily.org/donation/)
Over 50% of families reporting picky eating problems at home. Not knowing what to do, parents may bribe, force and pressure their child to eat. The connection between parent and child can go south, eating often gets worse, and tension at the table grows. And it's not just children but older teens and adults who struggle with picky eating. One thing is for sure, we all need to know how to respond to picky eating and remove the shame associated with it. Only then can we see real progress. To dig into this topic we have two featured experts: Katja Rowell, MD, and Jenny McGlothlin, MS, SLP. Katja is a medical doctor with expertise in relational and responsive feeding, and Jenny is a Speech Language Pathologist whose responsive feeding program at the UT Dallas Callier Center combines oral-motor and sensory treatments with parent education. Together they wrote Helping Your Child with Extreme Picky Eating and their recently released book, Conquer Picky Eating for Teens and Adults. The show starts from the very beginning (infancy) and touches on every stage including adulthood. You will discover the best way to respond and support the picky eater in your life, even if the picky eater is you!
Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!
Providing proper nourishment for our children is one of the basics of parenting, so when our picky eaters reject our healthful offerings we may panic.
