Episode 649: Rose Melberg of The Softies

On today's episode, I talk to musician Rose Melberg. Originally from Sacramento, California, Rose has been a performing musician since high school in the early '90s. While only lasting a year, her first band Tiger Trap garnered a cult following and put out a self-titled album on K Records. Her next band Go Sailor lasted from 1994-1996, but in that short time, recorded a number of albums and singles for Slumberland and Lookout! At the same time, Rose formed The Softies with Jen Sbragia. While it was originally meant to be a side-project, it became the main musical focus for the pair, and between 1995 and 2000, they released three fantastic albums on K Records: It's Love, Winter Pageant and Holiday in Rhode Island. Since then, Rose has released a number of incredible solo albums and performed in different bands, but most recently, she and Jen started writing music together again, and their latest album The Bed I Made was just released on Father/Daughter Records, and it's the best! Who Is She? - “Thursday,” a 2023 single from Father/Daughter Records Seattle supergroup Who Is She? — Robin Edwards (aka Lisa Prank), Bree Mckenna (Tacocat), and Julia Shapiro (Chastity Belt) — have become even more super with the addition of Tacocat's Emily Nokes. Their sophomore full-length, Goddess Energy, will be out August 25th via Father/Daughter Records, and was produced by Jenn Champion.  With today's Song of the Day, the quartet add themselves to the list of bands who've written songs about days of the week. “We are big fans of day of the week songs like ‘Manic Monday' and ‘Friday I'm in Love,' and we realized there weren't enough songs about Thursday,” the band shared in a press release. “So we decided to write one!”  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tasha - Perfect Wife - from the 2021 album Tell Me What You Miss The Most on Father/Daughter Records. With her sophomore full-length Tell Me What You Miss The Most, Chicago-based singer/songwriter Tasha invites the listener to nestle in to each track, allowing yourself to be enveloped by the warmth and light. "These are swaying songs," she says of the swoonful new release. “I was inspired by a distance I felt from myself,” she continues in a press release, “the writing was kind of born from this desire to get back to an intimacy, or honesty, with myself.”  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Anna McClellan began performing original songs in her hometown of Omaha, NE at the age of seventeen and has been actively recording and touring ever since. Her debut, Fire Flames, earned her an opening slot on a Frankie Cosmos tour. Through the doors that tour opened, McClellan eventually met Father/Daughter Records which led to the release of her second full-length record, Yes and No, in 2018. After a stint in NYC, several subsequent tours and meandering, Anna returned to Omaha and recorded I saw first light, her latest effort for Father/Daughter. Anjimile - "In Your Eyes" from the 2020 album Giver Taker on Father/Daughter Records. On his debut album, Giver Taker, Boston-based musician Anjimile was inspired by “faith, addiction, and [their] own transition.” Today's Song of the Day examines the unfair perceptions of others, with Anjimile explaining in a press release, “This is another song about grappling with homophobia and ultimately recognizing that I am what I am. It’s a somber song, but the sorrow is for those who would live their lives constricted by such bigotry.” He elaborates in an interview with American Songwriter:  When I was in fourth grade, my homeroom teacher gave us a sort of “family tree/genealogy” assignment. This included learning the meaning (if any) behind our given names, so that day I went home and I asked my parents what “Anjimile” meant. They told me that “Anjimile” means “denied” in Chichewa (the native language of Malawi, where my family is from), and that one of my aunts had cried out “oh, Anjimile” when I was born because she was hoping my parents would have a son. In this context, “Anjimile” means “denied a boy.” There’s a couple of lyrics in this song that go “Does my body divide / was my body denied?”, and they’re quite literal and based around the aforementioned context. The whole song is related to my relationship with my gender, my sexuality, my name, my family. Funny how things connect.  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Cayucas over Zoom! This indie-pop band is formerly known as Oregon Bike Trails. Cayucas lays its roots in Santa Monica in California started in 2012 when they signed to Secretly Canadian. This band is composed of an iconic duo which includes Zach Yudin with his twin brother, Ben Yudin. It was the year 2011 when the musician first released their debut single under the name of Oregon Bike Trails associated with the recording company Father/Daughter Records. A year later, from going solo, Yudin decided to change the name of the group, switching it to Cayucas eventually signing with Secretly Canadian record label. As they flourish, they have decided to release a single entitled Swimsuit and scheduled a tour in collaboration with Ra Ra Riot in 2013. Cayucas left their fans hooked to their music creating a bright and melodic environment. These rhythmic jams expose the structure of the lyrics that define the opportunity to make a change and be the change. The collaboration of the brothers introduced a type of music that is fresh to the ears of listeners of all ages. https://www.cayucas.com/https://www.facebook.com/Cayucas/https://twitter.com/cayucasband?lang=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7LLcRttKjV6PeJOlCNCYonWe want to hear from you! His most recent album DROOL was released last year on Father/Daughter Records, and it's fantastic! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

Jessi has built an amazing label and has been in the scene for years! She started working with Amy Fiddler of Fiddler Records in Florida and has done just about everything running a label of her own which she started with her dad in 2010. Hence the name Father/Daughter. As you’ll learn this hour, Jessi is a wealth of knowledge and has a keen ear to what’s going on in the independent music scene today.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

Episode #106: 2010 was arguably one of the hardest years for the music industry, but that didn't stop manager and publicist Jessi Frick from starting an independent record label with her father, Ken Hector. Since then, Father/Daughter has released acclaimed albums by Pure Bathing Culture, Diet Cig, Vagabon, Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, and more. The label has also gained a reputation for being fiercely artist-friendly. Jessi joins us to talk shop and we hear from Shamir Bailey, who just released ‘Revelations' through the label.

Breaking up can be soul-crushing. But for Alex Cohen writing, and singing, about it one way to help ease the pain. The frontwoman of four-year-old Brooklyn-via-Austin indie rock band Alex Napping channeled the hurt, confusion and distress of a painful romantic split into the band’s excellent second album, "Mise En Place," which came out on the Father/Daughter Records label in May.  Speaking to Paste Magazine earlier this year, Cohen explained the inspiration behind the album’s nine emotionally rich songs. "While I was writing the songs on this record, and what a lot of the songs are about this time in my life where I was really unhappy; I was in a relationship that I was making a lot of personal sacrifices to be in, and I felt like I had lived my whole life on this idea that if I do things a proper way then things will turn out the way that I want them to,” she said. "I feel like while writing this record I slowly began to realize that things are way more chaotic and unpredictable than that.”  So she did what so many young, creative seekers do with her broken heart: she wrote a song about it. A whole album, really, some of which she shared during her visit to the WCPO Digital Lounge for the latest Lounge Acts session. The emotionally fraught collection from the four-piece — which also includes guitarist Adrian Haynes, bassist Tomas Garcia-Olano and drummer Andrew Stevens — is anchored by Cohen’s feathery voice and clear-eyed, direct lyrics. One of the finest examples is from “Fault,” where she sings the laceratingly direct couplet, “There’s a pause in your breath, I know it/ There’s a fault in your step, I can tell/ If nothing is wrong then you’re lying/ The water’s all gone from your well.” With a mix of alt rock sway and spare, sometimes icy arrangements that lift Cohen’s voice over the Haynes’ fuzzy guitar lines, the songs on "Mise" put her story front and center, bringing to mind the expansive sound of such beloved ‘90s shoegazer bands as Slowdive and Lush. From the subtle bubble of “Tender” to the loud-quiet-loud guitar rock of “You’ve Got Me” and the blistering “Temperamental Bed,” Alex Napping will feed your head and your heart. The background behind Father/Daughter Records is literally all in the name of the company; a father and daughter who joined forces to contribute to the greater good that is the music industry. Being out of San Francisco, what brought Father/Daughter Records to the Hopscotch Music Festival is their signed bands that played at the festival this year: Mutual Benefit (Played at Vintage 21) & Gems (Played at CAM). Jessie (the daughter in Father/Daughter Records) was nice enough to sit down with us for a little bit to give us some insight as to what she does and how she really appreciates what the Raleigh/Triangle is doing for the music scene.
