On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two of what I'm going to call alt-rock lifers, guys with vast catalogs and the stories to match, who've ridden the highs and lows over the years and continue to make fantastic music for dedicated fanbases: John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws. Flansburgh is half the core of They Might Be Giants, one of the two Johns—along with Linnell—who started making quirky pop records about 40 years ago. They've released nearly two dozen albums, wriggling their way into the mainstream on occasion, from “Birdhouse in Your Soul” to the Malcolm in the Middle theme to popular albums aimed at kids. It's been a remarkable ride that shows no signs of stopping; They MIght Be Giants is still on tour, still making new music, and still seeming to have as much fun as they ever did. Their latest record is called Book—it's available in many formats including, you guessed it, a giant book—and there are some sparklers on it, including one in particular that the guys talk about in today's episode. Check out “Brontosaurus.” The other half of today's conversation is Matthew Caws, singer and guitarist of the fellow New York band Nada Surf. Nada Surf had a really odd start to what's turned into a long and fruitful existence. Their first album featured the song “Popular,” which turned into something of a novelty hit / summer anthem back in 1996. It wasn't particularly representative of the band's smart, layered pop—which is no knock on “Popular” itself—which confused their record label, Elektra. But after a bit of a slow period, Nada Surf found their way into indie-rock hearts with 2002's Let Go, and they've earned a place in those hearts ever since. The tenth Nada Surf album came out earlier this year, and it's among their best. It also features a surprisingly high number of more uptempo songs, as Flansburgh mentions in this chat. Check out “Second Skin” from Nada Surf's newest album Moon Mirror.   In this chat Flansburgh and Caws take a deep dive into the genesis of “Popular,” which Caws had no idea would be a hit but is happy to still play. They also chat about Flansburgh's love of the new Nada Surf record, both of their time on the same major label in the 1990s, and whether it's appropriate for a band to take a group bow at the end of a good show. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:42 – Start of the chat 2:58 – Welcome to Fresh Air 9:45 – The unusual origins of "Popular' 17:45 – Nada Surf's ignoble split with Elektra Records 22:40 – John's theory on Matthew's doubled vocals 32:21 – The ups and downs of sharing your political point of view as a musician Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws for chatting. The Art of Longevity

Send us a textIn this day & age of abundance, you can easily forget what's precious - like your favourite bands. If you are anything like me the question “what's your favourite band” now has an official top 40. As in I have a rolling 40 favourite bands. Making a welcome return to the top 40 is Nada Surf, the ‘New York' (now firmly remote) indie band that first hit my favourites list way back in 2005. I always remember how I discovered a band, in the case of Nada Surf it was on a Mojo or Uncut free “covermount” CD (do they still do those?). The track “Do It Again” from The Weight Is A Gift Album (2005) has one of my all-time favourite basslines. Indeed, in our Art of Longevity chat, Matthew Caws and myself ended-up riffing on a playlist of pop songs in which the first thing you hear is the bass line. If playlists were still a thing, that would be a good one. It was a pleasant digression from the important matter of surviving the music industry. Nada Surf is one of those bands that's easy to forget about when music is so abundant and that would be a big mistake. Stumbling upon a new Nada Surf record every 4-5 years is a highly recommended balm for modern day life. I can't think of many bands (or in the case of Matthew Caws, songwriters) who provide the soundtrack to fumbling through life in the way we sometimes do, especially if you recognise the traits of attention deficit, as Matthew does - the origin and subject of the band's superb new song ‘In Front of Me Now', which I have adopted as a theme tune for the time being. In my head, if you will, this song is a number #1 hit single. Over the years, Matthew's subject matter for Nada Surf's songs covers life's day to day tribulations, the mangled thought processes that cycle through our brains and how to see light from the dark patterns that surround us. We are essentially keeping Matthew company as his life has played out. “Most of the time a song is just impressionistically how I'm feeling”. Nada Surf is one of those bands that made their way through a 30-year career and nine studio albums without disturbing the charts. Yet the band has never made a bad record and indeed Matthew, modest to a fault, is somewhat coerced into being proud of never making a dud album. “It has felt great in terms of longevity for a very long time. Unbelievably when we were making The Proximity Effect (the sophomore album in 1998) most of the bands that we toured with had broken up and we were sticking together. That felt unusual”. Whether new album Moon Mirror will change the trajectory for Nada Surf remains to be seen of course, although it's unlikely. That's just the modern music landscape in the streaming era. Perhaps what matters more, is that not only is the new album very much not a dud, but one of the best indie sets you are likely to hear in 2024. And that's saying something, since guitars and indie bands are back in fashion, albeit the modern kind i.e. a new crop of cult bands. Let's hope some of this new crop of indie guitar bands can stay the course the way Nada Surf has done. Turns out surfing on nothing can be a lasting pastime. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Not everyone can say that both their first and last jobs were behind the counter of a record store. But that's how things ended up for Matthew Caws, before his beloved power-pop act Nada Surf became his main gig in the mid-2000's. Shifting time between New York City and Paris growing up, he points to an eclectic list of influences (classical, disco and late 70's NYC punk) that laid the groundwork for who he'd become as a musician and songwriter. Though their sneering, tongue-in-cheek alt-rock hit "Popular" became an MTV staple throughout 1996, the band has made a deeper impact as they've aged, through genuinely hopeful takes on the human condition like "Inside of Love" or "See These Bones." Today, Matthew talks about color coding his record collection, why double-tracking vocals feels like an act of fiction, the meticulous nature of Nada Surf's album covers, and connecting the dots between Bach and Blonde Redhead. Their new album Moon Mirror -- the group's first for Nashville label New West -- drops September 13th. More details are available at nadasurf.com.

Hey. It's a special one this week. Juliana Hatfield is a singer-songwriter based in Massachusetts. She was a member of the Lemonheads in the early 90s, as well as bands like Blake Babies in the late 80s and Some Girls in the early 00s. She's made albums with Matthew Caws from Nada Surf and Paul Westerberg from The Replacements. She's also released around 20 albums under her own name, sometimes as the Juliana Hatfield Three. Although a prolific songwriter, in recent years she occasionally releases an album of covers by a specific artist. Her latest one, “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO”, follows her albums of songs by Olivia Newton John and The Police. Being a big ELO fan myself, it seemed like a great time to talk with her. She had a particular rough time in the press in the 90s and he experience with working with a major label has clearly left it's scars. Stick with this one, after a lot of ELO geek talk we go deep. It was genuinely one of my favourite conversations I've had for the show. Sometimes you have a guest where you feel you're really chasing down some kind of epiphany. For the 20th anniversary of Nada Surf's third album, LET GO, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca formed the band in 1992, they eventually linked up with drummer, Ira Elliot. They spent several years grinding it out in their hometown of New York City where they worked multiple jobs and hustled to get their music heard. During a chance encounter with Ric Ocasek at a show at the Knitting Factory, Matthew Caws gave him a demo tape. A couple weeks later, Ocasek got back in touch with Matthew and offered to record them if they were able to sign to a label. Luckily, Elektra Records offered them a deal soon after and they went on to release their Ocasek-produced debut album, HIGH/LOW in 1996. Due to the unexpected success of the first single, “Popular,” Nada Surf found themselves under a lot of pressure for their follow-up album. THE PROXIMITY EFFECT was released in Europe in 1998 but Elektra got cold feet and decided not to release the album in the U.S. and ended up dropping the band. With no record contract, they found themselves back in New York, working odd jobs and calling in favors for help recording their third album, which ended up becoming LET GO. In this episode, Matthew Caws joins us for an in-depth conversation about this pivotal moment in the band's history when they went from being a major label success to suddenly being completely independent. Matthew describes how this period of his life was completely music-focused as he worked at a record store and spent all of his time going to shows and writing songs. The low pressure situation that they found themselves in inspired a more diverse group of songs and a more relaxed feel to their recordings than ever before. From sprinting home to remember song ideas to obsessively listening to a Sony Sports Walkman to writing a song in an Amsterdam bathroom to Chris Walla's mixing skills to gratitude for recorded music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Pom Pom Squad - Popular (feat. Matthew Caws of Nada Surf) - a 2021 single on City Slang. Back in December, Pom Pom Squad turned a joke tweet into reality when they covered Nada Surf's “Popular” and remade the classic video shot by shot. “I'm gonna recreate the video for “Popular” by Nada Surf but I'm gonna play every character,” Mia Berrin tweeted in March 2021. Nine months later, that dream was realized. It's a fitting tribute for a band that's built their imagery around cheer parody. Their latest album Death of a Cheerleader saw Berrin explore the coming-of-age high school stories that Matthew Caws was subversing on Nada Surf's 1996 hit. There are different implications or meanings, though, hearing some of these lines from the voice of a queer woman of color rather than a straight white man. “Being attractive is the most important thing there is,” goes one the more iconic spoken-word lines from the song. “If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond, you have to be as attractive as possible.” For the video, Pom Pom Squad journeyed back to the same high school the original video was shot and enlisted real students to star alongside Berrin, who plays the teacher, football star, coach, and, of course, cheerleader. For an extra boost of authenticity, Caws joins the band on the football field to play guitar and sing backing vocals. Watch the video for “Popular” below and catch Pom Pom Squad at Neumos on Friday, March 11th. This week's guest is Ira Elliot, drummer for the alternative rock band Nada Surf. Formed in the 90's, Nada Surf has been going strong for multiple decades with no signs of stopping and Ira has been the backbone behind it all. Ira could be on a Mount Rushmore of drummers who know how to instill their own vibe while not taking anything away from a songwriter's (in this case, Matthew Caws') impactful words and melodies. While he definitely has fun behind the kit throughout the records, listening to Nada Surf takes you to school on how to just drum…cool. You know what mean? There's a quiet confidence about his drum writing and you'll see what I meannnnn in this episode. Please enjoy my conversation with Ira while we dissect a few songs from his career the top 5 shtuffs that made him into the drummer I wish I was. Cheers! Our guest today is the musician Matthew Caws.  Matthew is the lead singer and guitarist in the band Nada Surf, a band he formed in New York City in the early ‘90s with his friend, Daniel Lorca. In total, Nada Surf have put out nine studio albums, and their most recent, Never Not Together, came out in 2020. Nada Surf also had the pleasure of touring with Elliott Smith and the band Quasi in 1998, and in this interview we discuss Matthew's memories of that tour, why he decided to turn down the opportunity to play solo shows with Elliott and his 'favourite' song pick too. "Blood" The Maine born, Massachusetts-raised Julian Hatfield studied at both Boston University and the Berklee College of Music. Along with John Strohm and Freda Love she founded the Blake Babies, who put out five fabulous, critically-acclaimed albums. One of the most potent artists out there, Hatfield has put out nearly 20 solo albums, including Hey Babe, Become What You Are and Whatever, My Love. She’s also put out full length albums of covers by Olivia Newton John and the Police. She’s been in the Juliana Hatfield 3, Minor Alps with Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, the I Don’t Cares with Paul Westerberg of The Replacements and Some Girls with Freda Love and Heidi Gluck. She’s also had stints in the Lemonheads, recording and touring with Evan Dando’s outfit. Her resume just never stops, so here’s more highlights, but keep in mind, this is a partial list. She’s contributed vocals to tracks by Belly, Aimee Mann and Susanna Hoffs, she started her own label called Ye Olde Records, she played Conan and Letterman, appeared on the "Adventures of Pete and Pete,” “My So-Called Life", and "Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” and her book When I Grow Up is one of the best memoirs you’ll ever read. Which brings us to her new album Blood. A truly riveting affair, it’s one of the best albums of 2021—open-wounded pop that’s as sweet as it is raw. From the delicious distortion of the murderous "Had A Dream," to the percussive blast of “Chunks," to the dark '60s pop of "Mouthful of Blood,” the album is stirring, it’s feral and it’s undeniably and deliciously melodic. Hatfield is one of the sharpest writers around—she’s funny, smart, caustic, observant and deeply, deeply wise. In this conversation Juliana talks to Alex about being in a post-love state of mind, if she gets recognized at the gym and the reverse of seasonal affective disorder. They also talk about cupcakes and muffins…. www.julianahatfieild.com www.alr-music.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com

Montreal's Le Trouble have really outdone themselves by producing a single that is vital, urgent, with equal parts tension, grit, and grace! The vocals, in particular, are a standout. A cross between Dallas Green (of City and Colour/Alexisonfire), Marc Bolan, and Jeff Buckley.Songwriters take note, this song is a masterclass in superb craftsmanship! Not bad for a group that admits they "stumbled into being a band"!Your Capricious Soul /Michael Stipe. In his first outing as a solo artist, Michael Stipe has struck gold. Your Capricious Soul is a riveting and mesmerizing track whose hypnotic, intensity is incredibly satisfying.Discussing the timing of his re-emergence, Stipe notes:“I took a long break from music, and I wanted to jump back in. Our relationship to the environment has been a lifelong concern, and I now feel hopeful… I believe we can bring the kind of change needed to improve our beautiful planet earth, our standing and our place on it.”Amen.Nada Surf / Ride in the Unknown The veteran New York City alt-rock band cranks out a super-catchy and rather epic banger that had me gripped from note 1. Guitarist/vocalist Matthew Caws has a such a lyrical and emotional quality to his voice that it transforms the chorus into a memorable event. I'm reminded of The WaterBoys' "The Whole of the Moon." Bravo!Emma Garell / I Wanna See BloodGritty, sweaty, and oh so cool, is what came to mind as I clung with frenzied desperation to Emma Garrels' new track "I Wanna See Blood". Like great sex, the track is seductive and dangerous, and the ecstasy is ever heightened from one exquisite moment to the next. This steamy banger is the perfect frame for Emma's skilful vocals, and it is enhanced with a gritty and sometimes 'Waits-esque' style production. Fantastic! The Assist / I Don't Care"I Don't Care" hurled me instantly back to a sweaty mosh pit of mid-90s Brit rock, and I loved it! This sizzler was made that much more authentic courtesy of Mikey Stanton's thick Birmingham accent. We pump our fists and pogo with abandon as he spews the line "I can’t stand this relationship/Is it wrong that I just don’t care?"… but WE care! Great track!Pet Shop Boys / Will o' the Wisp. Breathtaking and fresh, the hot new Pet Shop Boys single "Will-o'-the-Wisp" is as new sounding as it is classic PSB. The opening track off their 14th studio album, HotSpot, the single is a powerful reminder of the band's "staying power"! At this point in their career, you might expect the venerable duo to rest on their creative laurels. But not so for Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. 40 years ago, they designed the quintessential 'synthpop' sound … but in 2020, they've updated their patent! I give it Number One with a bullet!Peach Pyramid / Fiction Victoria, BC's Peach Pyramid is the alter ego of Jen Severtson, who is a master of deliciously elegant vocals and searingly intimate narratives. Her new single, "Fiction", is an irresistible mid-tempo groove replete with guitars that are steeped with subtle edge, and a production that is superbly dreamy. It's already on repeat. Lovely.Walrus / Mr Insecure. Halifax's "Walrus" dishes up a powerful dose of fun with their late 60s, psych-pop inspired "Mr. Insecure". The hook-filled, Beatles-esque ditty will, no doubt, position the band as the heirs to Sloan's "Can-pop" crown. Very Nicely done!Mr Ben & the Bens / CelecongratulationsQuirky and fun, "Celecongratulations" reminds me of late-60s Kinks with a splash of "Belle and Sebastian", and it reeled me in -- hook, line, and sinker. Ben Hall's quirky vocals, imaginative melodies, and interesting key changes are reminiscent of early T-Rex. This is a stand-out track!Remington Super 60 / The Highway Again Reminiscent of late 60s FOLK-pop , "The Highway Again" by Nowegian legends "Remington Super 60" overflows with tranquil melodies and alluring vocals. It is pure retro heaven. One reviewer described the song as: "a slow morning car ride in a late 60’s film, the sun coming up, filtered through the trees, with the dusty road ahead and the promise of the unknown." Well, that sounds about right to me!
