Does being a parent to twins simply mean two of everything? There are certainly twice as many diapers to change, two bladders to potty train, and double the tears during teething. But to twin parents, the emotional impact and physical toll often feels more than double… it feels exponential. In this episode, Adam and Marc welcome Shaw Flick, a fellow dad of twins, to examine the unique challenges that twin parents endure. Also, Marc and his wife try not to bust a gut when their three-year-old son puts them in their place, in an installment of So That’s a Thing Now. Adam and Marc open the show by catching up on Marc’s new Disney+ subscription, and Marc shares an update to one of his recent Confessions regarding a bouncy ball from hell which made a brief comeback recently, before being permanently banned from the Checket household. The guys welcome creative copywriter and father of twin daughters, Shaw Flick, into the conversation. Shaw is a co-worker of Marc’s, though living in Portland, Oregon, they have only meet and collaborated virtually. As fathers of three-year-old twins, Marc and Shaw have plenty of twin-dad experiences to compare and contrast. Topics of the conversation include:• The annoying things that people call out when they see twins• Shaw’s history as the front man of the band Ra Ra Riot• The unique set of challenges that twin parents are faced with• The chaos of newborn multiples• Encouraging individuality• How to address when one twin takes on an alpha role• Twin parent camaraderie• And morePost-interview, Marc shares a So That’s a Thing Now which finds him getting scolded by one of his boys (and trying not to laugh when it happens). We had the pleasure of interviewing Cayucas over Zoom! This indie-pop band is formerly known as Oregon Bike Trails. Cayucas lays its roots in Santa Monica in California started in 2012 when they signed to Secretly Canadian. This band is composed of an iconic duo which includes Zach Yudin with his twin brother, Ben Yudin. It was the year 2011 when the musician first released their debut single under the name of Oregon Bike Trails associated with the recording company Father/Daughter Records. A year later, from going solo, Yudin decided to change the name of the group, switching it to Cayucas eventually signing with Secretly Canadian record label. As they flourish, they have decided to release a single entitled Swimsuit and scheduled a tour in collaboration with Ra Ra Riot in 2013. Cayucas left their fans hooked to their music creating a bright and melodic environment. These rhythmic jams expose the structure of the lyrics that define the opportunity to make a change and be the change. The collaboration of the brothers introduced a type of music that is fresh to the ears of listeners of all ages. https://www.cayucas.com/https://www.facebook.com/Cayucas/https://twitter.com/cayucasband?lang=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/7LLcRttKjV6PeJOlCNCYonWe want to hear from you! A new theatrical version of To Kill a Mockingbird is opening on Broadway next month, adapted for the stage by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch. So in anticipation of this Broadway debut, we’ve put together some of our favorite segments about America’s most beloved novel. First, we check in with the residents of Monroeville, Alabama — Lee’s hometown and the real-life "Maycomb" — to see how public opinion about the book has changed since its initial chilly reception in 1960. Psychologist Mufid James Hannush weighs in on Atticus Finch’s parenting methods. And indie rocker Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot explains how the band found inspiration in the novel. Lastly, Kurt talks to book critic David Ulin about the controversy surrounding the publication of Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman in 2015. This podcast was produced by Studio 360’s Zoe Saunders, along with Anna Boiko-Weyrauch, Jenny Lawton, Becky Sullivan, and Lynn Levy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Working Class Audio #193 with Drew Vandenberg !!! Drew Vandenberg is an engineer, producer and label owner based out of Athens, Georgia. He got his start working at legendary Chase Park Transductions studios when he was just 16, learning the finer points of the craft from studio founder David Barbe. He left his homebase for a time to get a degree in the recording arts from Indiana University, returning to Athens to work on pivotal records for Ra Ra Riot, Toro y Moi, of Montreal, Kishi Bashi, Tall Tall Trees, Fred Thomas, Mothers, Faye Webster, Futurebirds and dozens more. Though centralized in Athens where he lives with wife Catherine, Vandenberg often travels to engineer special projects, as well as producing and mixing remotely. In 2018, he formed True Blue Records, a label he closely supervised, working directly with new artists The High Divers, Partials, and Curt Castle on the creation and release of their albums. The label also recently began a series of specially recorded 7" singles, inviting bands into the studio to record exclusive material live to 1/2" tape, pressing the results to limited edition vinyl singles and donating all of the proceeds to local charities Nuci's Space and the Athens Boys & Girls Club Music Makers program. About this Interview: Drew joins me for a chat about his rise from teenage assistant to his current role as producer and engineer. We talk money, work/life balance, earthquakes vs tornados and being mindful in the studio. May 2017 was supposed to be the start of the next stage in the career of queercore band PWR BTTM. They were set to release their next record Pageant--the follow up to the well-received 2015 full length debut Ugly Cherries. But then Jezebel.com posted accusations of sexual assault against PWR BTTM member Ben Hopkins by an anonymous accuser. Before the end of May 2017, the band found themselves dropped by their label and management team and a touring member of the band quit. The band have issued a statement on their Facebook page denying the accusations, but all this has left many PWR BTTM fans not knowing what to think. I first saw PWR BTTM a few years ago when they opened at the Biltmore for Ra Ra Riot. While I interviewed Wes from Ra Ra Riot, he proudly wore a neon-pink PWR BTTM sweat shirt. Next time I saw the band, they were headlining at 333 on a bill with Bellows and Lisa Prank. It was a great night, a fun crowd. (Each act on the bill stayed to watch the others perform at the back of the room--which is a rare thing.) My leather jacket straight music snob friends (there to see Bellows) could mix with tank top, glitter and cotton candy colored hair queer folk there to see PWR BTTM. Two very different crowds who don't mingle enough got to enjoy a great show together and everyone felt safe. While at the PWR BTTM show, I met Maguire (who goes by the pronouns them/they), a young PWR BTTM super fan--such a fan they had come to Vancouver from a remote community just to see the band. I wanted to get their take on this horrible situation. "The space that PWR BTTM created was like no other. I've been to punk shows, rap shows, and rock shows of all sorts, but PWR BTTM stood out because of the way they didn't just use the space, but transformed it. For a few short hours, I felt safer at a show than I'd ever felt previously. Both band members constantly stressed the importance of their "No Mosh" policy and what consent means to them between quips about appetizer bread from the nearby Ethiopian restaurant and being berated by hot Canadian border guards. They spoke and the people listened, danced, and respected their wishes and the people around them. As someone who has woken up with bruises from errant moshers the day after a show the feeling of being able to really let go and not worry about what other people are doing in the space surrounding me, allowed me to enjoy the music more than you ever could at a regular show where people are pushing you mercilessly, unconcerned with any other person's idea of enjoying a concert. The idea that each person entered into this space purely to enjoy the music without impeding others elevated the experience. This band has meant more to me than any other ever has. Hands down. And it still does, I can't change the way this band changed me and the effect their music has had on me. I am who I am today because of things I have learned from their records. I am sincerely devastated more than anything by the accusations laid against them." This is my chat with Ben and Liv from PWR BTTM as we hung out in the band's tour van parked outside 333 while it rained outside on a Friday night in November 2016. Tracks played on the show… 1) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “I Wanna Boi” 2) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “Ugly Cherries” 3) PWR BTTM, Ugly Cherries (2015) “Dairy Queen” 4) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Carbs” mp3 5) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Gendr” 6) PWR BTTM, Cinderella Beauty Shop (2014) “Trade” NO songs CANCON

Ra Ra Riot started out as a baroque pop or orchestral pop band fronted by singer Wes Miles amazing voice. In 2013, the band released Beta Love, a record which left the baroque pop sound behind and went in a new direction, towards something more electro pop. As you can imagine, Beta Love was polarizing and not popular with a small but vocal segment of the band's fanbase. I enjoyed Beta Love and was very interested to hear what the next step in the band's evolution would sound like. In early 2016, the band released Need Your Light. I hung out with the band's singer Wes in Ra Ra Riot's busy tour van and we talked. What is the unlikely secret from Wes' past in school? What was it like working with Rostam Batmanglij (from Vampire Weekend) on the new record? How did the band navigate the rocky waters of change and growth? Which is Wes' favorite track on Ra Ra Riot's first record The Rhumb Line? How much does Wes love U2's 1991 album Achtung Baby? You have to listen to find out! (I even get him to sing a bit.) Tracks played on the show... 1) Ra Ra Riot, Need Your Light (2016) "Water" 2) Ra Ra Riot, Need Your Light (2016) "Absolutely" 3) Ra Ra Riot, The Rhumb Line (2008) "St Peter's Day Festival" (mp3) 4) Ra Ra Riot, Beta Love (2013) "Beta Love" (background) 5) Ra Ra Riot, Need Your Light (2016) "I Need Your Light" (mp3) NO songs CANCON
On today's episode I talk to Wes Miles of the indie rock band Ra Ra Riot. Originally from New Jersey, Wes has been playing music for most of his life. Ra Ra Riot formed in January 2006, playing at houses and venues around the Syracuse University campus. After recording a demo, they started to attract attention, eventually getting signed to Barsuk Records, who's released all four of their albums The Rhumb Line, The Orchard, Beta Love, and their latest Need Your Light (all are very worth your time!). On the side, Wes has released an album with former-Vampire Weekend-er Rostam Batmanglij under the name Discovery. It is also awesome! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Ra Ra Riot, I Draw Slow, Walter Martin, Overcoats and Ona on Mountain Stage. Episode 864, recorded live in Charleston, West Virginia.
Episode 2: Matt Santos from Ra Ra Riot
Speaking of the Arts welcomes Marc Plotkin! In 2011, Bloomberg Business Week listed Marc and his co-founders in their list of top 25 entrepreneurs for their company CitizenGroove, an online social networking site for pro musicians. The company was subsequently renamed DecisionDesk and now helps hundreds of universities with the application process for music and non-music students alike. In 2013, Marc founded a new company called Wifi Music School, which connects musicians with students through Skype. As a musician, Marc has appeared on albums for major acts such as Ra Ra Riot and Panama Wedding.
Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles chats with Alt In Our Stars host Chris Payne about the band's new album "Need Your Light": collaborating with Rostam Batmanglij, pushing his voice to the limit, and how childhood friendships still affect his art today. Also, he explains what it's like to sing the National Anthem at an NFL game. It's kind of surreal. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Ra Ra Riot is a NY university party-born band known for mixing indie pop with lush string arrangements. They invaded iPods around the same time as band besties Vampire Weekend. Ra Ra Riot's latest release, Beta Love, dives headfirst into the highly processed world of synthetic electro-pop. The reception to this career move can be charitably described as mixed, with most long-term fans wondering what the hell happened. As a fan, I can understand the concern over this change, but you can't blame a band for wanting to grow. Eager to talk about all of this, I managed to lure Mat from the band away from the catering at the club. I get him to talk about the direction change in depth and much more. Tracks played on the show... 1) Ra Ra Riot, Beta Love “Beta Love” 2) Ra Ra Riot, The Orchard “Boy” 3) Ra Ra Riot, The Orchard “Too Dramatic” 4) Ra Ra Riot, Beta Love “Dance With Me” NO songs CANCON
