It's back-to-school month on The Blind Rage Podcast! Kicking things off is MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH, an experiment in ‘70s exploitation notorious for waiting until the last scene to show any adults (teachers, parents) and for being an undeniable inspiration for the 1989 cult classic HEATHERS. When David (Derrel Maury) transfers to Central High at the insistence of an old friend (Andrew Stevens), he discovers that the school is under a dictatorship led by the three richest, most popular students. Bored of seeing his fellow classmates ordered around and tormented, David decides to take matters into his own hands, dispatching of the school's leaders in grisly fashion. Almost immediately, those once considered underlings begin acting out in ways similar, if not worse, than those they've escaped. David decides there is only one thing he can do to finally set things right…

The fact that he has show business in his blood comes as no surprise, given that he's the son of screen legend Stella Stevens. On the big screen, you've seen him in “The Boys in Company C”, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Male Newcomer, and he also received the Star of Tomorrow award from the National Association of Theatre Owners. On TV he appeared in dozens of shows and movies including “Once an Eagle”, “Topper”, “Code Red”, “Hollywood Wives”, “Hotel”, “Dallas”, and many more. He's also written many screenplays and composed numerous songs for movies and TV shows. He's directed over a dozen feature films, including world premieres on HBO and SHOWTIME, as well as multiple episodes of popular TV series. But beyond all of that, our guest is one of the most prolific and successful producers in Hollywood. He has co-founded and run numerous film production companies, and is currently President and CEO of Andrew Stevens Entertainment and Stevens Entertainment Group. He's produced hundreds of enormously successful feature films including “The Whole Nine Yards”, “Angel Eyes”, “The Pledge”, “City by the Sea”, “The Big Kahuna”, “Green Dragon”, “Get Carter”, “The Marksman”, “Black Dawn”, and dozens more. As an educator, he created a fully accredited Associate of Applied Arts college degree program in Motion Picture Production, which formed the basis of an online certificate program called “Foolproof Film School”, based on his best selling 2014 book entitled, “Foolproof Filmmaking: Make a Movie That Makes a Profit”. His other books are “Producing for Profit: A Practical Guide to Making Independent and Studio Films”, and “Screenwriting for Profit: Writing for the Global Marketplace.” And if all of that weren't enough, our guest also serves on the board of directors of the International Film and Television Alliance, and until recently served as Chairman of the Independent Producers Association. Shoot us a Text.Happy Independence Day! We're giving you a quick hit of BBQ prices, drones v fireworks, and some substantial travel numbers. Grab some mac salad and join us. It will be an expensive Fourth of July for most consumers as BBQ prices hit an all-time high. As BBQ essentials have significantly increased in price, up 5% from last year and 30% from five years ago.The survey checked prices for a complete cookout including cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, and more. Feeding 10 people will cost $71.22, up 5% from last year and 30% from five years ago. The grocery list included: cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, potato chips, pork and beans, fresh strawberries, homemade potato salad, fresh-squeezed lemonade, chocolate chip cookies, and ice creamFewer cattle are being placed on feed, leading to higher beef prices.“Yes, food prices are increasing, but they're not increasing as much as they have in recent years, and they're even a little below the long-run average,” said economics professor Andrew Stevens.“The consumer is waving the white flag on food inflation,” said Tom Bailey, senior consumer foods analyst at Rabobank as the cost disparity between dining out and cooking at home at its widest margin in history, we're seeing heightened fatigue and frugality according to PR NewswireMore cities and organizations are throwing out the fireworks shows and instead incorporating drone shows into their July 4th events.Los Angeles replaced the traditional downtown July Fourth fireworks with a drone show, aiming for innovation and wildfire safety. The move paid off as the crowd responded positively to the new experience.Nashville and the Kansas City Royals are combining drones with fireworks, while Napa and Tahoe City are using drones exclusively.Safety and environmental concerns drive the shift, as drones do not leave debris or risk fires.Drones offer creative storytelling synced to music but come at a higher cost than traditional fireworks, and shows often don't last as long due to battery life.Despite some initial resistance, the innovative approach is gaining acceptance and evolving rapidly.AAA projects a record-breaking 70.9 million travelers will journey 50 miles or more for Independence Day, marking a 5% increase from last year. This year's holiday travel period spans nine days (Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7), the longest ever observed.60.6 million people will travel by car, surpassing the 2019 record of 55.3 million.Gas prices are lower than last year's $3.53 per gallon average.Air travel will see 5.74 million passengers, a 7% rise from last year.Bob Pishue from INRIX warns of heavy traffic on July 3rd and 7th, with potential delays up to 67%.Top domestic city: Seattle; Top International city: Vancouver, BC, CanadaHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Bwyd Abertawe is Swansea's local food partnership, and is collaborating with 4theRegion and Castell Howell Foods to support an increase in the volume of veg grown on the Gower Peninsular and generally across the Swansea Bay area. This project is part of a wide range of activities across South West Wales which seek to strengthen our local food supply chains and our regional horticultural sector. This conversation brought together: Dawn Lyle, 4theRegion Edward Morgan, Castell Howell Foods Lucy Hole, Secret Hospitality Group Ian Chriswick, Gower College Sarah Gould, Lantra Richard Bond, Food & Drink Wales Supporting Local Producers: Lucy Hole emphasised Secret Hospitality's commitment to support local producers across Swansea Bay, highlighting their collaboration with Castell Howell. However, they acknowledged that the volume of produce this year has presented challenges, preventing them from fully supporting local producers. Richard Bond from the Food & Drink Wales project, brought a broader perspective to the discussion. The Food & Drink Wales project is responsible for promoting Welsh food and drink in Wales, the UK and internationally. Their vision is to create a strong and vibrant Welsh food and drink sector with a global reputation for excellence, having one of the most environmentally and socially responsible supply chains in the world. Ian Chriswick from Gower College shared insights from the GCS Green Hwb project. The Green Hwb project delivers qualifications in horticulture. Produce from the project will be used to go to local causes, with the first crop of the year supporting projects such as the Phoenix Centre and The Nelson Trust. This project demonstrates the potential of food production as a means of support for local initiatives. Sarah Gould, of Lantra (who run the Farming Connect project) added to the discussion with her industry expertise. The Farming Connect project supports Welsh farmers with business support and training. Andrew Stevens, a livestock farmer and the Champion for Rural Economy at Swansea Council, shared insights from a farming perspective. Challenges and Obstacles: Ed Morgan from Castell Howell led a discussion on the challenges faced by local producers and the wider food industry. He emphasised the globalisation of the food supply chain in recent decades, leaving communities vulnerable to supply disruptions. Food security has become a concern, particularly in light of recent environmental factors impacting food production and supply chains. Ed highlighted the need for a template or framework for engaging with growers and supporting them financially and operationally. The challenge, as identified, includes the timing of produce availability, weather disruptions, and land acquisition by renewable energy industries. The group discussed various strategies to address these obstacles, including: Engaging with Growers: Collaboratively engaging with growers to understand their capacity and requirements, and committing to support on factors like seed costs, staff expenses and machinery. Educational Engagement: Focusing on the educational sector by working with schools and colleges to bridge the gap and introduce young people to farming. Exploring the potential link between education and the industry to support catering students and foster a stronger connection between educational institutions, restaurants and local producers. Competing with Global Markets: Developing strategies to compete with growers in England and abroad by focusing on quality, value, and experience. Logistics and Distribution: Recognising the importance of logistics and distribution for small growers, and exploring partnerships with distributors like Castell Howell. The meeting concluded with a recognition of the complex challenges facing local producers in Swansea Bay. However, there was an optimistic outlook on the potential for collaboration and support from various sectors to overcome these challenges. The group committed to further discussions and action plans to enhance the support for local producers and strengthen the regional food supply chain. 4theRegion is keen to hear from anyone who would like to be involved in this project, please contact zoe@4theRegion.org.uk Project updates will be published here: https://www.4theregion.org.uk/projects/gower-grown/

Together, they explore the theme of creativity and their takeaways for brand marketers and communicators who want to keep their creativity sparking in a post-pandemic, purpose-driven and highly polarized marketplace. “Creativity is about using ideas to solve problems,” says Andrew, kicking off our conversation. “That's where we can add real value for clients. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is my idea new, novel, unexpected or surprising in some way?' And crucially, ‘Is it aligned to what's happening in culture?'” “Creativity really brings purpose to life,” says Aaron. “It boils down to the purpose of what we're trying to solve, whether it's a business solution or awareness play.” Next, our guests talk about how creativity can help bridge the divide between brands and consumers. “People need to fall in love with brands,” says Aaron. “The top brands in the world, like Nike or Apple, don't reach that point overnight; they have been years in the making. Consistency is the key to establishing authenticity for your brand.” “You need to stand for something, otherwise you stand for nothing,” says Andrew. “It's one thing for a brand to say it's doing something with purpose, but creativity allows you to show what that purpose looks like and why it matters to your audience. Some brands don't want to take a position on anything because they fear they'll alienate certain audiences. This has led to creative outputs that are overly earnest or bland, which is disheartening because creativity should excite, inspire and illicit an emotional response.” The conversation then shifts to how both of our guests stay inspired and keep their creativity flowing. "I approach the world with open eyes," says Aaron. "The world can be jaded and dark sometimes, but I keep a sense of innocence, optimism and acceptance, which creates cool creative opportunities for me and excites me to wake up every day. It also helps to hear about what others are doing in the creative space and how it can inspire my own work." “I try to expose myself to as many different things as possible,” says Andrew. “In order to be creative, I need to be able to view things in new ways and from different perspectives, which requires setting up points and counterpoints. It's all about creating new contexts for your brain to do its work and reach that ‘eureka' moment.” Our discussion closes with advice for how brand marketers and communicators can elevate creativity in their campaigns and communications in 2023. “You need to be honest and empathetic,” says Aaron. “As creatives, we must be able to put ourselves in other people's shoes to understand and talk to them in a way they connect with. You also need to be provocative, whether it's being fun and whimsical or triggering an emotional response. Brands can't play it safe.” "Brands need to be radical and daring," says Andrew. "The world is in a state of radical disarray, and we have everything to lose and everything to gain with the solutions we put forward in response. We all need laughter and positivity right now. Start putting bold ideas in front of your clients that may not have been approved or well-received just a few years ago." We're beginning to see businesses return to normality – but it appears part of getting back to normal is ramping up the volume of irritating customer communications advises Andrew Stevens, Principal, Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance, Quadient. "The number of complaints accelerated towards the end of 2020, but now we're in a worse position than before the pandemic. The sheer volume of spam calls and texts will take a toll on worried customers, who are already grappling with the energy crisis and soaring costs of living. So businesses need to pull the handbrake on annoying customer calls and texts, or they could hit record levels of complaints this year, which would hit revenues when customers decide to leave." With the cost-of-living crisis at the top of everyone's minds, consumers are more worried than ever about their finances. Banks must provide helpful and personalized communication to demonstrate they are on the customers' side. By bombarding customers with irrelevant content, banks are only exacerbating what is already a stressful time. Instead, they don't need to be sent innumerable offers or reminders, instead functions like spending tracking tools and searchable statements. Communications that highlight these valuable functions and how to use them, or give other ways to reduce costs, will be much more welcome. These are just a few topics we explore in today's episode of Tech Talks Daily.

49: Chapter 47. The Sky Suspended This episode is scripted by John Ruths, Andrew Stevens and Newell Fisher The pre-chapter quote is from Lark Rise to Candleford, by Flora Thompson. It seems to clearly reference Bigwig and what's going on between him and General Woundwort. The chapter begins where we left off at the end of Chapter 45 at Nuthanger Farm and starts with Dandelion's leap when Hazel stamped his alarm. Leaving Hazel's fate behind us, we commence the rapid return to the Down. Dandelion is not only the fastest rabbit on WD, but he is also not inclined to panic and go tharn. Soon this rabbit and dog pair get up to where Blackberry is waiting, who attempts to draw the dog. Swift and driven Dandelion has now caught up! The two intrepid rabbits work as a team to continue to draw the dog. We're now back in the warren on Watership Down where we find a wounded but determined Bigwig who is unwilling to let Holly take his place. Woundwort is attempting to bargain with Bigwig and he actually offers him the Efrafan Mark of his choice. DoesWoundwort truly mean this? Bigwig's response is surely the best line in lapine in the entire book. Woundwort leaps forward towards Bigwig again, using his seemingly relentless strength and weight as they bite at one another. Slipping further back, nearly into the burrow he is defending, Bigwig lets loose of his hold on Woundwort, lowers his head, and pushes as hard as he can. Woundwort bites Bigwig's back but the blood that has been filling his nostrils from Bigwig's earlier blows means that he cannot breathe properly while holding a bite so he has to let go. In his delerium Bigwig thinks he hears Fiver speaking to him as he did at the Warren of the Snares. Bigwig then actually squeals "The wire!" aloud before springing back to life only to find that Woundwort has gone. Woundwort has backed out of his fight with Bigwig and attempts to send Vervain in to "finish" off Bigwig. Vervain shows up again from dealing with Bigwig. But it's not to report that Bigwig has been killed. Woundwort calls him a coward. Then he and Woundwort realise that Bigwig is up once again, has moved up within the run he is defending, and is immediately below them. He is in an awful state, his fur-cap matted with blood and one ear half-severed and hanging limply...but he is ready to fight again. When Bigwig says “My Chief Rabbit has told me to defend this run and until he says otherwise I shall stay here” it only worsens things for Woundwort and Vervain. They had thought that Bigwig was, surely, the chief. And with this new information they both assume that Bigwig's Chief must be even bigger and stronger. And now Fiver wakes up from the seeming trance he was in. Woundwort sarcastically orders Vervain to kill him and leaves. But then Fiver states that he is sorry for the deaths of the Efrafans. This is too much for even a sadist like Vervain to take, who is usually comfortable mocking those he is about to kill. He is mesmerised by Fiver's demeanour and flees above ground in terror. As Woundwort loses control over his rabbits they are also shocked by his appearance. And then the dog appears. Only Woundwort stands his ground. Woundwort's stand against the dog is a truly fitting climax for this monstrous, remorseless, magnificent rabbit. Woundwort bellows the last words that anyone hears him say. A "raging, squealing cry": “Come back, you fools! Dogs aren't dangerous! Come back and fight!” This chapter contains three climactic moments, any of which would be a crowning glory for the novel: The strongest rabbit Bigwig's declaration of loyalty to his chief, weak yet wise Fiver's calm expression of sadness for the deaths of the Efrafans and the horrific fulfillment of Hazel's calm, yet deadly effective, leadership, make up a trio of truly mythic moments that are a perfect reflection of the rule of three. The novel has truly reached its denouement. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/watershipdown/message

41: Part Four: Hazel-rah Chapter 39. The Bridges Scripted by John Ruths and Newell Fisher An additional thought from John Ruths, following last weeks episode: "Do you think that maybe rabbits could 'feel' the moon? As in could they possibly feel the electromagnetic effects?... If so, an Adams' rabbit could seemingly speak about the moon with more knowledge. Although, the real purpose of having a visible moon in the sky would be light to see by at least in my opinion." An interesting thought... I have also had a follow up from Andrew Stevens, who got in touch at the end of September, about classical references in WD. Andrew makes many interesting points that will feature in future episodes. Just one more thing to add: I am officially announcing the founding of the WD Podcast Owsla, membership of which will be awarded to anyone who materially assists in the making of the podcast. The inaugural membership is as follows: Will Fuller Ric Morris Maxine Tubb Sergal Ahad Jeremy Downing Amber Rizzi Rebecca Porter Andrew Stevens An anonymous listener who got in touch about their relationship with the book after an abusive childhood. And finally, obviously, John Ruths, who is hereby appointed Captain of Owsla. Introduction to Part 4 The opening events of Part 4 of WD are entirely skirted over in the 1978 film, after the punt breaks free on the River Test. So, if that is your main experience of the story, what follows will be new to you as these events do not appear in any film portrayal of the story. Once our heroes are back on the Down, we will come on to the very familiar climax of the book. We have reached the final act of WD. Chapter 41. The Bridges The opening quotation, from an american folk-song, is simply about a boatman celebrating while going home "with the girls" It kind of speaks for itself. We learn right away that The Test is a pretty fast-moving small river. Most of the rabbits don't really know what is going on but Woundwort and the host of Efrafans are gone so it doesn't really matter very much. Rather than just waiting for the little punt to beach itself, or whatever else, Hazel and Blackberry are talking about what will come next. It also shows that the getaway is as far as their plan took them. This indicates that they had not considered what would come afterward. Kehaar's warning about the upcoming "pridge" is important as we shall soon sadly see. This is a low bridge, in fact it is the same one they crossed when they first arrived at the Test, and the punt may not be able to pass underneath. The boat bumps and skids its way under the bridge. Acorn is knocked into the lower part of the boat by the bridge, but is okay. However, one of the newly arrived Efrafan does, Thrayonlosa, seems to have been hurt and Hyzenthlay is with her. Kehaar warns of another 'pridge' and it seems this one will stop the little punt. It does and Adams gives us a time-and-distance check. The boat has traveled just under a half mile in a bit more than 15 minutes, which also backs up the timings around the inappropriate use of the phrase Fu inlé from last weeks episode. With the boat stopped, Hazel, Blackberry, Silver, and Kehaar discuss what to do. Kehaar thinks the rabbits need to simply get out of the boat and swim under the bridge. Just as he quietly offers to go first things change and some men pass over the bridge. This frightening, indeed for Hazel almost unbearable, moment passes and Hazel comes to himself, telling everyone to disembark and swim under the bridge. They will just have to trust Kehaar. Moving back upstream, to the other side of the bridge, Hazel reassures those still in the boat that it is okay and says the does must swim through first, with the injured doe Thrayonlosa being escorted by Blackberry and Thethuthinnang. The group makes its way into the trough, or space, beneath a fallen tree. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/watershipdown/message

Tread Perilously celebrates its 300th podcast with an unusual choice -- an episode of Night Man called "Manimal." Discovering how to travel in time, Manimal tries to stop Jack the Ripper's murder spree. Instead, the notorious Whitechapel killer makes his way across time to "present day" San Francisco. There, he terrorizes Manimal's daughter and plots yet more murder. Will Manimal team up with saxophonist-turned-costumed-hero Johnny Domino to stop the Ripper or will the secrets of transmutation be lost for all time? Also, where's Police Woman and Black Partner? We promise, this is an episode of Night Man and not Manimal. Erik tries to determine the premise of Night Man. Justin decries the failure of storytelling on display. Erik notes the similarities between Night Man and Manimal. Justin tunes to WEVL 97.3FM. Both recall the place Malibu Comics held in the early-to-mid 1990s. Erik accidentally creates "Bloodpool" the long missing 1990s comics character. A discussion of the film Time After Time breaks out. Justin doubts the abilities of Night Man star Matt McColm. The daughter of Manimal leads to split decision and in one of the least likely digressions in Tread Perilously history, Erik and Justin discuss the filmography of Andrew Stevens.

Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 46 of your guide to the truly astonishing world of softcore films, and the world’s number one podcast on that subject! This week, Anthony from fantastic looking erotic thriller documentary We Kill for Love is our special guest once again, and we check out 1993’s erotic revenge thriller masterpiece, Scorned - starring and directed by the legendary Andrew Stevens. Fun fact: Scorned is the only DTV erotic thriller available on blu-ray at this time. Granted, it’s only available as a very limited release (2 covers with 250 copies each), and only in Germany, but it looks stunning, and as a bonus comes with a 20 page booklet which is entirely in German (so could honestly say anything). The plot is bananas - wife of suicided man tries to take revenge on the guy who got a promotion ahead of him by seducing him, his son and wife - but it’s enormous fun, and stars iconic queen of ‘90s softcore Shannon Tweed! How have we made it 46 episodes without doing either an Andrew Stevens or Shannon Tweed movie?! Naturally, instead of talking about the careers of either of those two legends, we talk about the life and times of its writer, Barry Avrich. This was Avrich’s one dip into the erotic thriller genre, but he’s a big name in the world of Canadian advertising, and also a big name in the world of biographical documentaries (particularly Canadian-focused ones). He also wrote a 400 page autobiography, although weirdly he doesn’t mention Scorned once in it. Hey, why not call us on our hotline? (724)2GO-GO69 or (724) 246-4669!

Breaking up can be soul-crushing. But for Alex Cohen writing, and singing, about it one way to help ease the pain. The frontwoman of four-year-old Brooklyn-via-Austin indie rock band Alex Napping channeled the hurt, confusion and distress of a painful romantic split into the band’s excellent second album, "Mise En Place," which came out on the Father/Daughter Records label in May. Speaking to Paste Magazine earlier this year, Cohen explained the inspiration behind the album’s nine emotionally rich songs. "While I was writing the songs on this record, and what a lot of the songs are about this time in my life where I was really unhappy; I was in a relationship that I was making a lot of personal sacrifices to be in, and I felt like I had lived my whole life on this idea that if I do things a proper way then things will turn out the way that I want them to,” she said. "I feel like while writing this record I slowly began to realize that things are way more chaotic and unpredictable than that.” So she did what so many young, creative seekers do with her broken heart: she wrote a song about it. A whole album, really, some of which she shared during her visit to the WCPO Digital Lounge for the latest Lounge Acts session. The emotionally fraught collection from the four-piece — which also includes guitarist Adrian Haynes, bassist Tomas Garcia-Olano and drummer Andrew Stevens — is anchored by Cohen’s feathery voice and clear-eyed, direct lyrics. One of the finest examples is from “Fault,” where she sings the laceratingly direct couplet, “There’s a pause in your breath, I know it/ There’s a fault in your step, I can tell/ If nothing is wrong then you’re lying/ The water’s all gone from your well.” With a mix of alt rock sway and spare, sometimes icy arrangements that lift Cohen’s voice over the Haynes’ fuzzy guitar lines, the songs on "Mise" put her story front and center, bringing to mind the expansive sound of such beloved ‘90s shoegazer bands as Slowdive and Lush. From the subtle bubble of “Tender” to the loud-quiet-loud guitar rock of “You’ve Got Me” and the blistering “Temperamental Bed,” Alex Napping will feed your head and your heart. Andrew Stevens has had a long, prolific and successful career in the entertainment industry, as an actor, writer, director and producer. A self-proclaimed "dealmaker," Andrew produced and/or financed over 170 films, was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in The Boys of Company C, auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker, had a 2-year stint on the TV show Dallas, and was once married to actress Kate Jackson from Charlie's Angels fame. Andrew talks in-depth about how he was first introduced to acting, the role of a producer in making a movie, the time he worked with Charles Bronson, showing films at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals, and his battle with cancer.
Quinoa -- that darling of the health-conscious western consumer -- came in for a lot of flack a few years ago. Skyrocketing prices caused some food activists to claim that the poor quinoa farmers of the high Andean plains in Bolivia and Peru were no longer able to afford their staple food. Every mouthful we ate was taken direct from a hungry peasant. Some people even gave up eating the stuff. Other writers retaliated by saying that high prices were the best thing that ever happened to those poor farmers. And agricultural economists saw an opportunity to prove their worth. The results are in. High prices are indeed good for farmers. And they had no impact on nutrition among either quinoa farmers or those who merely buy it from time to time. If you gave up on quinoa, you can take it up again with a clean conscience. But that's not to say all is perfect. In this episode, the impact of high prices on quinoa farmers, the problems to come and how western consumers can be part of the solution. Notes There’s quite a lot about quinoa’s various ups and downs over at the other place. This is a good place to start. Bellemare, Fajardo-Gonzalez and Gitter’s paper is Foods and Fads: The Welfare Impacts of Rising Quinoa Prices in Peru. Andrew Stevens’ paper is Quinoa Quandary: Cultural Tastes and Nutrition in Peru. Bioversity International has lots of information about Payments for agrobiodiversity conservation services. Lots more from Andean Naturals at their website. Oh, jeez, here I am. Marc Hershon, your host and artificial sweetener for Epi131 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. This is another edition of Succotash Clips, and we have a whole passel of comedy podcast clippage for you. When I say “we” I mostly mean me because I’m the only one typing up this blog entry. But I also include our booth announcer Bill Heywatt, whom you heard at the top of the show, our Engineer/Producer Joe Paulino, our booth assistant Kenny Durgis, and our delightful Associate Producer Tyson Saner, who discovered and harvested several of the selections you’ll be hearing. And I also include those comedy podcasters who got their clips to us themselves. Yes, that’s right. If you want to get a clip of your show on our show, and you’re tired of waiting around for either Tyson or me to find you, you can upload a 3-5 minute MP3 clip directly to Succotash by going to http://hightail.com/u/Succotash and following the simple instructions. Fifth Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival I got my super early bird 3-day pass for this year’s 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. It’s toward the end of September – the 23rd thru the 25th. That pass was just 99 bucks and I just checked – ALL the early bird passes are sold out so if you’re going to go, you’re going to be paying full freight. You can get a one day pass or got for all three days. Check out the ticket sitch at http://LAPodfest.com. I’m trying to see if they’ll let me run a panel or be a guest on a panel or even do a live Succotash episode from the festival. We’ll see. At the very least, I’ll go prepared to hold down my usual corner of the Podcast Lab. In This Episode Most of clips we have loaded up for this show are from podcasts we’ve not featured before, but there are a couple of familiar faces…or voices, rather. We have snippets from the Cue Plot Device podcast, The Language of Bromance, the Mt. Rushmore podcast, Poop Culture, the SeeSo SeeShow, the ShePod podcast, Sup Doc, This Freakin’ Show, This Is A Podcast and The Unoriginal Podcast. In addition to the clips, we have a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. Plus another musical piece by Tyson made up by cobbling together audio from the How Did This Get Made? podcast called “Dance Mr. Boogaloo.” (Other selection by Tyson can be found on his SoundCloud page.)There is a pile of things to read in the ol’ TweetSack. And, in honor of Elon Musk’s most recent Space X private rocket launch and landing, this episode of Succotash Clips is brought to you by Henderson’s Space Pants. Clips ShepodI think Succotash is beginning to collapse under the sheer weight of podcasts. It’s crazy how many new shows are flocking out of Podcastland. And not so old shows. I’ve recently become acquainted with a show called The Shepod: Brunch with Rachel and Sara (not the bible ones) and it just passed it Epi50 mark without me noticing it until now. The show features two women who aren’t comedians per se, but they are funny as hell – Rachel King and Sara Tenenbein. The latter is some kind of marketing consultant and the former works as a writer and some other kind of consultant. Sup DocTyson snipped us from Sup Doc, a podcast about documentaries and the documentarians who make them. From Epi26, which I mentioned a few weeks back on Splitsider.com and the Huffington Post, we have part of a conversation with Sup Doc co-host Paco Romane and guest Todd Glass, a very funny comedian and podcaster whom I interviewed during last year’s LA Podfest. The subject of the episode was Bill Maher’s Religulous doc from 2008, all about the craziness of the worlds’ religions. Cue Plot DeviceNext up is a podcast which I never knew about until they were kind enough to start retweeting some of our stuff a few months back. Often times that’s enough to get our attention so I went to check out Cue Plot Device. It’s hosted by four guys: Dr. G, Yosh the Scientist, The Captain, and Chief — not their real names, I assume. This show falls into the Nerd category, I think, because they cover such things as “cartoons, comics, video games, movies, tv-shows, card games, board games, and much, much more”, according to their homesite. But one of their segments focuses on their title’s subject: Plot devices. Here they delve into Season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil series. SeeSo SeeShowWe’re going to go a little meta here. We have clipped and talked about the SeeSo SeeShow podcast a few times previously, hosted by Andrew Stevens. It’s an independent podcast that cleaves very closely, nonetheless, to the relatively new SeeSo streaming comedy channel. In his fourth episode, Steven himself clips an interview with Community creator Dan Harmon which was done on the 100th episode of the Innovation Crush podcast last October. So we're clipping a clip that was clipped for another show. In that episode, Harmon talked at length about the “story circle” technique of story writing. Mt. RushmoreWe stick with the musical theme for a bit, by way of a clip uploaded directly to us by the guys over at the Mt. Rushmore podcast. According to their homesite, the show features Michael Winfield and Richard Manfredi who argue a lot. Their arguments revolve around what they call the "Mt. Rushmores of Life" — the four things that best represent any particular category. Such as the Mt. Rushmores of Kids’ Cereals. Or the Mt. Rushmores of Fictional Presidents. They then present those arguments to Jeff Hopkins, a comedian, judge and jury, who then passes judgement. The clip that they uploaded to us is from their Epi4: The Mt. Rushmores of One and Done Albums. Then here is where I started to get a tad "ranty"… The Language of BromanceThere’s a whole swath of podcasts out there in Podcastland helmed by people that really aren’t looking for personal fame, which you can tell because they don’t use their last names. Of course, it could just be because they don’t want anyone at work — or their parents — to find out. I’m not sure what the case is for Richard and Bruce, the hosts of a show called The Language of Bromance, but they have 93 episodes out there on the podwaves so it’s obviously a serious enough endeavor. (Come on, guys! What are your last names? Drop me an email or a direct message on Twitter and we’ll reveal the information in the next Tweetsack segment.) I’ve got a chunk from their Epi92, entitled "Bros At The Zoo". In this clip they’ve been ruminating about what it would be like if animals came to look at people in what they’re calling a human zoo. Then I got even rantier… This Freakin’ Show Our next show, scooped up by Tyson, is ANOTHER show featuring semi-anonymous hosts. I don’t know why I’ve got a thing aobut this so much this week. People can do what they want. But to me it smacks of the Millenial thing of being anonymous on the internet. Saying shit but not being visible enough for anyone to knock you down for it. That’s not saying that the hosts of This Freakin’ Show are talking shit about anyone. That’s just the name of their podcast. Awesome. By way of thei homesite, the hosts are Travis-T, a Divinity student; Awkward Colin, a Navy veteran; and Geek Show Joe, a podcaster and graduate student. Their thing is the usual territories of chatfest shows: current events, pop culture and then, in the miscellaneous column, “shenanigans that tickle our fancies.” (That must have been written by the graduate student.) And they put their own spin on the commentary which, in this clip, revolves around which — in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — has them asking each other which DC Comics characters would they like to see made into a movie. But then I finally give up… Poop Culture PodcastOkay, okay. I’m going to give up obsessing on this “no one wants to use their own name” thing. It’s kind of like radio back in the day, when all the on-air personalities had made-up names like Wolfman Jack, Jocko Henderson, and Kid Leo. I guess this is the podcast trend, at least for hosts that aren’t famous comedians or whatever. So let the slack-cutting begin with the Poop Culture Podcast! The hosts are the Boobie Brothers and Mancrush. Clearly their pseudonyms haven’t kept them from getting decent guests on the show. A few episodes back they talked at length to Lloyd Kaufman, the man, the myth and the legend behind Troma Films. This Is A PodcastAnother selection from Tyson Saner’s bushel basket full of clips comes from a show with the blatant title, This Is A Podcast. Interestingly, there is a second show called This Is A Podcast show listed on iTunes but don’t be fooled – the last episode for THAT show was in September of last year. (Another few months without a fresh installment and that show will be eligible for the Podcast Graveyard segment…) But THIS version of This Is A Podcast, hosted by Thomas Allie and Kristi Diaz, who are described as “20-something young lovers” on the Stitcher website, say that they poke fun at the of the world in a way that most wouldn’t. The Unoriginal PodcastThe next clip comes from a show that’s begun passing the Succotash, meaning retweeting our Succotash tweets on Twitter and we love that. It’s called the Unoriginal Podcast, which is very honest but not very original, as it turns out, because there’s The Original Unoriginal Podcast, as it’s called but which stopped putting out new ‘sodes back in 2012. (A definite candidate for the Podcast Graveyard. If we only had the time this week we’d do it. Next time…) Anyway, THIS Unoriginal Podcast hails from Ireland and features Ciara, Dayo, and Fredi. They’re only five episodes in and don’t seem to have a proper homesite yet. This slice is from their Epi4, entitled, “The One with The Shenanigans?" There’s that word again. What’s the deal with “shenanigans”? Before I sign off, I wanted to kindly suggest you visit our homesite at http://SuccotashShow.com and help to keep us in business by clicking on the Donate button there and tossing us a few bones. Or use the Amazon banner at the top of that same page next tim eyou want to buy something from Amazon – we get a li’l taste of that. Or buy some of our merch from the Succotashery. Other than those things, I got nuthin’. Except this: Please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

Art Camacho's gritty story of redemption Half Past Dead 2, which stars professional wrestler Bill Goldberg and rapper Kurupt, hit stores last Tuesday. He joins us on this edition of the Your Video Store Shelf Podcast to talk about an assortment of topics. Like so many guests on this show, Camacho's journey into the world of filmmaking was not a typical one. Camacho began to learn martial arts as a teenager as a way of defending himself against the gangs of South East Los Angeles. He continued training into his adult years. Like so many accomplished martial artists in 1990's Los Angeles, Camacho was eventually asked to get the crap kicked out of him on film. He quickly learned the tricks of the trade of stunt work, and his workload increased. Soon enough he found himself being asked by PM Entertainment to not just do stunts, but choreograph the fight scenes in many of their movies. He has choreographed well over a hundred action scenes since then, and it was thanks to his success in that field that he found his way into directing. Half Past Dead 2 is Camacho's 14th film, with his earlier efforts including Gary Daniels' Recoil, Gangland, Sci-Fighter, and Point Doom. Topics include how he got attached to Half Past Dead 2, working with Andrew Stevens, the rhythm involved with fake fighting, his experience being PM Entertainment's fight choreographer, assembling almost a thousand extras in less than ten hours, the simple story of how he got into directing, his nervousness on his first day, his friendship with Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, bad kickboxing movies, blowing up cars, weak scripts, how long it takes him to appreciate his movies, how Andrew Dice Clay and Richard Grieco saved Point Doom, the eagerness of Angie Everhart, how great James Russo is, his very dangerous original plans for Confessions of a Pit Fighter, how he almost broke a gang truce, why we haven't seen that film, working with Flava Flav, getting his beat up in both Half Past Deads, and to close the show off, Art leaves me speechless. Fine show people. Get to listening!
When Steve Latshaw moved out to Los Angeles in the mid-90s at the age of 35 it was at a time when the ultra low budget market was virtually dead. Being able to make a movie in twelve days for $50,000 is a talent that men like Steve have, but unfortunately for him, no one was interested. He was told by those close to him that if he didn't make it in the business within two years, it may be time to head back to Florida. Luckily for Steve, his friendships with men like Fred Olen Ray paid off, and as a result he was hired to write the low budget family flick Invisible Dad for Andrew Stevens' Royal Oaks Entertainment. Steve didn't realize it at the time, but that wacky little film would lead him down a path that saw him become one of Andrew Stevens' go-to-guys for low budget scripts. Invisible Dad was made in 1997, and ten years later he has twenty-six writing credits to his name. The last time Steve was on the show, which you can check out in the podcast archives under show six, we covered his career directing low budget films like Jack-O and Vampire Trailer Park in Florida. This edition focuses on Steve's move to Los Angeles and his subsequent success in the low budget market. Topics discussed include a man named Hugh Janus, the kindness of Fred Olen Ray, reasons for rewrites, getting flack for his military movies, how long it takes him to write a script, tough collaborations, the budgets of his films, the dangers of agents, lots and lots of fantastic talk about stock footage, how Jim Wynorski made an action film without shooting action scenes, the absurdity of using footage from Terminator 2, a thank you to Renny Harlin, pseudonyms, the importance of reliability, and his upcoming films Xenophobia and Planet Raptor, the retitled sequel to Raptor Island.
