On this occasion, Babelito interviews the director of Arquetopia in Mexico and Peru, a residency program that both him and FavyFav have attended. They discuss the Middle Eastern influences on Mexican food and Francisco explains the process of developing residency programs in sites such as Puebla, Oaxaca and Cuzco. They talk about the myth of the artist, the myth of art and the problems Arquetopia has had with residents who seek to live their Latin American fantasies through their cultural production. Find out more about why Babelito is so critical to the art of Frida Kahlo, the real meaning of micro-aggressions, visibility, the difference between white guilt and white absolution, and the ways that we can use critical theory for our own advantage. In this episode, los batos de LWL play the beloved game of La Lotería! From its colonial origins to the ways our communities engage with its iconography, this board game has been part of the Latinx imaginary for more than one hundred years. In the sprit of the ABC’s of Latinidad, FavyFav and Babelito deconstruct each and every card with criticism and lots of humor. Also, Cynthia Neri Lewis from Rio Hondo College wrote her master thesis on this popular game and she weighs in the racist history of some of its cards. Stick around 'till the end for some art podcast recommendations from FavyFav and Latinx music from Babelito. And as always, make sure to send your emails to AskLWLPod@gmail.com (mailto:AskLWLPod@gmail.com) and we might read them on a future episode. #podsincolor #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #supportlatinxbands #lwlpod
"Determining what obscene, indecent and profane mean can be difficult, depending on who you talk to." ~ The Federal Communications CommissionOn this episode, we tackle the FCC's nebulous stance on what is too obscene for network television. Following our discussion about Hallow Eve's floorshow look from episode 5 of Dragula season 3, many of our listeners reached out to remind us that the FCC prohibits the use or simulation of menstrual blood in television programs, commercials, or print ads. With that in mind, we did some research into the matter and decided to share our findings. It was no surprise to us that the "regulation" is outdated, leads to misinformation, and is rooted in misogyny.Seasonal Affective Disorder and our continued adventures with hair bleaching are on the agenda as well, and we share what we're most excited about this week: Cabronas y Chingonas' "2 Fat 2 Brave" with Favy Fav & Eva Arreguin; Safiya Nygaard's YouTube Channel; and Ta-Osh Designs' inclusive range of nude fabrics.

Viva Las Vegas! On this episode, we chat about our recent vacation to Las Vegas. Joining us is Favy Fav, co-host of "Latinos Who Lunch" and host of "The Art People Podcast." Thanks to his love and knowledge of Sin City, were able to experience it through the eyes of a local resident. With Favy as our tour guide, we visited some of the area's most fascinating hidden gems and indulged in fare from dueling taco spots, Korean-Mexican fusion, and of course, ate at The Original Lindo Michoacan on East Desert Inn!
Después de más de tres años of continuous work, FavyFav and Babelito have decided to take a much-needed break, and in this exit episode, they get into the reasons why they decided to stop for a bit, friendship expectations, and their plans for the future of the podcast. Also, Babelito gives us a recipe for his own version of huevos en cazuela and Favy sets the record straight on the difference between Spanish chorizo and Mexican chorizo. Stay tuned till the end for recommendations and much more. Its just three months raza! They’ll be back! #podsincolor #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod
FavyFav and Babelito of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast joined us to talk about the behind-the-scenes of creating a podcast, the rise of faux brujas a.k.a. cultural appropriation, if and how they embrace their inner bruja. They even opened up about why at first they chose to use nicknames instead of using their real names when launching and how liberating it's been in committing to being vulnerable on the show. This honest conversation on culture, politics, and importance of visibility in the podcast world might leave you hungry for more. Check them out at Latinos Who Lunch for more and listen to their podcast! #supportbrownpodcasts Shoutout to Pam Covarrubias from the Cafe con Pam Podcast and the FEMININE Podcast By The Modern Curandera, both available on iTunes.
En esta ocasión, we bring you an amazing live episode from LWL’s hometown of Las Vegas. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) hosted FavyFav, Babelito and Dr. Erika Abad to indulge in a conversation about Latinx queer representation in television. They focus on five shows to dissect the importance and problems behind them. From Jane the Virgin to Pose, this conversation reveals how these television shows, while they highlight the visibility of our communities, are at the same time not perfect. Listen as they talk about why we need to watch shows like Casa de las Flores and One Day at a Time and why we also need to be critical of them. Stay tuned till the end to listen to audience questions and comments on representation, visibility, the future of Latinx popular media, and some Vegas podcasts recommendations. #podsincolor #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod

This very special episode of LWL is a live recording featuring artist & curator Roberto Jackson Harrington, artist Alexandra Robinson, University of Texas' scholar Carra Martinez, and artist & educator Erin Gentry. In this dynamic panel for Fusebox, an Austin Texas performing arts festival, FavyFav, Babelito and their guests discuss their experiences as Latinx people passing as, but (some) not identifying as, white. From their upbringing, to the different forms of code-switching, the themes in this panel are necessary conversations aimed to address privileges and responsibilities within the Latinx community of Texas and the country. The colorism is real, y'all! #austinTX #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod https://www.fuseboxfestival.com/
Hello Spicy Eyes listeners! We've got some updates for you in between episodes. Thanks, as always, for your patience and for tuning in — we put a lot of work into research, field recording and producing this show, which takes time! But in the meantime, here's what's in store in this bonus episode: We got a chance to hang out with a few very cool Vegas podcasts: Alison and Jacob of Wild & Free took us to Battista's Hole in the Wall, an old school red sauce Italian classic, and we recorded some sounds at dinner (an accordion player makes an appearance) Kristy hung out with Cheftimony host Graham MacLennan and they sat down with Chef Jamie Tran at Black Sheep (find the episode preview and a mini interview with Kristy here!) We went to a Latinos Who Lunch live show at UNLV's Barrick Museum, and got a very sweet shout out (thank you to Babelito & FavyFav!). Keep your eyes peeled for that episode, featuring guest Professor Erika Abad, coming soon. We also answer a few questions from friends of Spicy Eyes: How did we meet? What's our favorite nostalgic food? What's the spiciest thing we've ever tried? (Yep, you'll have to tune in to find out!) Last but not least, we're sharing not just one, but TWO daily nuggets with you in this bonus episode! The first daily nugget features farmer Amanda Yeckel, who gave us a tour of her beautiful property at Cluck-It Farm after a farm dinner in May. FYI, they're opening up registration for the fall CSA program. Daily nugget #2 comes to us from our friend Sungjoon Koo, a photographer and bartender running the bar program at the brand-new Sushi Kame on Spring Mountain Rd. He shows us how he puts a cocktail together — lots of great shaker sounds! The outro music was composed by Jeremy Klewicki. That's all for today! Thanks everyone.
After several months of hard work and live gigs, Babelito and FavyFav are in the same room to record, not 1 but 2 Guara Guara (free-form) episodes! In this first part Favy tells us all about his experiences installing artwork around the country, his reactions to the Oprah exhibition in D.C. and the Frida show in Brooklyn. Also, they get into Favy's recent solo exhibit in Houston and the way Tex-Mex food has been co-opted as a signifier of Mexican food around the world. Stay tuned till the end to hear recommendations and as always makes sure to send your emails to AskLWLPod@gmail.com and we might read them on a future episode. #podsincolor #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #supportlatinxbands #lwlpod
This week we bring a special episode brought to you by the podcast Grizzly Kiki! ___ Your FAVY Could Never! On this episode, we KiKi with FavyFav (aka Justin Favela), a Las Vegas-based artist & co-host of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast. The inspiration for Favy's large-scale installation pieces are drawn from his own Latino roots, as well as popular culture. Employing tissue paper & cardboard as his principle media, he often takes over entire gallery spaces. His first installation in New York is entitled "Recuerdame," and will open at the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling on October 17. During our KiKi with Favy, we chatted about his Las Vegas Roots; his unique form of artistic expression; the origins of Latinos Who Lunch; the problematic nature of our theme song, "Fat Fish"; and much more!
This week FavyFav and Babelito opened the LWL vault and decided to re-air a fan fave, "Not My Monument."-You wanna talk about monuments!? Well guess what, Mimi…WE DID! This week FavyFav and Babelito discuss the terrorist attack in Charlottesville through a conversation surrounding the history of monuments and their function in society. From statues of Christopher Columbus in Puerto Rico, to university mascots around the country, monuments preserve a very selective history that must be challenged. All white supremacists monuments must fall! And as always make sure to send your questions to AskLWLPod@gmail.com and we might read them on a future episode. #podsincolor #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod

FavyFav and Babelito visit Austin, TX this week and chat with one of their favorite artists, José Villalobos. As a sculptor and performance artist working in Texas and the border, Villalobos has managed to create a body of work that tackles issues of queer identity and erasure without relying on old stereotypes nor expected old tropes. Instead, Villalobos has dismantled narratives of Latinx identity in the U.S. and has brought to the scene a new and refreshing take on queer aesthetics and politics that are bound to entertain, educate and mesmerize. Last year, as part of "Money for Our Movements, A Social Justice Fundraising Conference," organized by Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training (GIFT), Babelito and FavyFav met Edgar Villanueva, an expert on social justice philanthropy. As a keynote speaker of the conference, Edgar spoke about his book, Decolonizing Wealth: Indigenous Wisdom to Heal Divides and Restore Balance. In this episode, FavyFav calls Villanueva to talk about his new book, his career as a philanthropist for Native American communities, and the type of colonial traumas surrounding wealth accumulation in this country.
