The Madison Jazz Festival is live! The decades-long running fest brings music from one end of town to the other all this week– most of it free. Host Bianca Martin talked to the two organizers of the event, Wisconsin Union Theater artist services manager Kate Schwartz and Arts + Literature Laboratory co-director Jolynne Roorda, about their vision for the festival. Then, as a special treat, Bianca talks to multi-Grammy winning pianist Arturo O'Farrill, who closes the festival on the UW Memorial Union Terrace on Sunday, about why jazz is good for the soul. It's been just over a week since UnityPoint Health-Meriter nurses ended their strike and got back to work with a new contract in hand. Roughly 1,000 unionized nurses walked off the job May 27 to demand better safety measures, pay increases, and adequate staffing levels. To get a better picture of what conditions are like inside the hospitals and what the nurses were fighting for, executive producer Hayley Sperling spoke with Pat Raes, president of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Wisconsin and a nurse at the hospital. The discourse presented in this podcast episode centers around the critical examination of the 14th Amendment, particularly in light of recent attempts by former President Donald Trump to redefine American citizenship. As we delve into the historical context and ramifications of such efforts, we underscore the amendment's significance as a cornerstone of civil rights, which guarantees citizenship to all individuals born within the United States. The discussion elaborates on Trump's controversial executive actions aimed at altering the interpretation of birthright citizenship, igniting legal disputes and political discourse that challenge the foundational principles of equality and justice inherent in American identity. Through this analysis, we confront the potential consequences of undermining the 14th Amendment, which could precipitate a broader erosion of civil liberties and the very fabric of American society. As we navigate these complex themes, it becomes imperative for citizens to remain informed and engaged in the ongoing debates that will indelibly shape the future of our nation.Check out ZJZ Designs for all of your gift and apparel needs! **We are honored to be nominated for “Best Local Podcast” in Inside Columbia magazine's “Best of Columbia” contest! You can help us win by voting today and EVERY DAY through April 30th. Here's the link to cast your vote and thanks so much for your support!** In this episode of our “Parenting in the Weeds” series, Austin Connor and Shay Roush tackle the universal challenge of sibling conflict. Whether you're dealing with daily squabbles between young kids, quiet resentment among teens, or lingering rivalries into adulthood, this episode offers practical insights and strategies to manage conflict effectively. Conflict amongst siblings is real and spans all ages: from fights over toys and screen time with young kids to resentment over perceived favoritism among teens or adults. The goal isn't to eliminate conflict entirely but to manage it, acknowledging its presence and working toward healthier relationships. Shay and Austin discuss the 3 main causes of sibling conflict, as well as 5 practical solutions to handle it including: Connect with each child individually Delight, celebrate, and laugh together as a family Avoid comparing your children Set patterns of reconciliation, apologizing, and forgiveness Be proactive about end-of-life matters and money The biggest takeaway from this episode is that “Your children may be competitive and compete with each other, but they should never have to compete for your love.” If you want to remember what you learned in this episode, and didn't have time to take notes while listening, subscribe to our newsletter at withyouintheweeds.com to receive our weekly episode summary and to find our library of resources on all the topics we cover. **Exciting news! With You in the Weeds has been nominated for “Best Local Podcast” in Inside Columbia magazine's “Best of Columbia” contest! You can help us win by voting TODAY and EVERY DAY through April 30th. Here's the link to cast your vote and thanks so much for your support!** Welcome back to our Parenting in the Weeds series! In this episode, we dive into a common parenting trap - the temptation to control your child rather than love them for who they are. While this desire often comes from a good place, such as wanting them to be successful or safe, it can lead to unintended harm. Listen in as John, Lynn and Shay explore the ways parents try to mold their kids in their own image instead of fostering their unique God-given design. You will learn about three common parenting traps - the Perfection Trap, the Mini-Me Trap, and the Take Care of Me Trap - as well as how to break free from them by focusing on the true goal of parenting. Key Takeaways: The Goal of Parenting: Helping children develop character qualities and the skills necessary to meet the demands of life. Supporting their unique design and pointing them toward Jesus. Modeling love and guidance without trying to control their every outcome. Three Parenting Traps: The Perfection Trap: Expecting children to meet impossible standards can lead to anxiety, fear, and struggles with self-worth. The Mini-Me Trap: Trying to live out unfulfilled dreams through your child instead of embracing their individuality can lead to rebellion. The Take Care of Me Trap: Relying on children for emotional support rather than allowing them to develop independence can hinder your child's emotional maturity. How You Can Break Free of These Traps: Acknowledge that your child is not yours to control - they belong to God. Recognize when fear, ego, or personal baggage drives parenting decisions. Give children space to grow, make mistakes, and develop their own faith and identity. Trust that God is working in your child's life, even when they take unexpected paths. Be encouraged that even if you recognize yourself in any of these traps, you're not alone! Parenting is a journey of learning, adjusting, and leaning into God's grace. The typical patient/doctor experience is changing as younger generations demand holistic, convenient, and personalized care. To address these expectations, a new medical model is sweeping the nation that includes ample appointment availability, lengthier patient/physician visits, and enhanced continuity of care. In many ways, this model of care is a return to the days of personalized medicine rather than typical medical management as we know it today.Dr. Nicole Dorotik joins us today to acquaint us with the concept of direct primary care. This medical model provides care to all ages, independent of insurance carriers, Medicare, and Medicaid. Direct primary care is a patient-centered model prioritizing personalized care, accessibility, and affordability. Unlike traditional healthcare systems, Dr. Dorotik's practice does not rely on insurance reimbursement. Instead, she and her team establish a direct relationship with their patients, offering comprehensive primary care services for a flat monthly fee. Dr. Dorotik's goal is to ensure that each patient feels comfortable, heard, and empowered - the perfect prescription for patient satisfaction. Show Notes:Dr. Dorotik, earned her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed her residency at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California. She is board certified in Family Medicine and has over 20 years of clinical experience. Driven by a passion for providing comprehensive care, Dr. Dorotik is dedicated to staying up to date with the latest medical advancements, and patients can trust her expertise and compassionate approach to healthcare. When she's not working, Dr. Dorotik loves all things outdoors, hiking, biking, and skiing with her three kiddos. To find a direct primary care physician in your area, go to: https://mapper.dpcfrontier.com/To learn more about Dr. Dorotik's practice, visit her website at: https://arvadadpc.com/To vote for our podcast for Best Local Podcast in the 2025 Best of Columbia, go to:https://best-of-columbia-2025-voting--inside_columbia_magazine.contest.vote/local-favorites/best-local-podcastWill the doctor see you now? **Exciting news! With You in the Weeds has been nominated for “Best Local Podcast” in Inside Columbia magazine's “Best of Columbia” contest! You can help us win by voting TODAY and EVERY DAY through April 30th. Here's the link to cast your vote and thanks so much for your support!** Welcome to our brand-new series, Parenting in the Weeds! This series is dedicated to parents who feel tired, confused, or frustrated - because let's be honest, parenting isn't just hard; sometimes, it feels impossible. In this episode, we dive into the challenges of parenting today and explore the tension between two popular approaches: gentle parenting and tough love parenting. John, Lynn and Austin discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each and introduce a balanced framework - love and limits - that can help parents find a more effective and sustainable way to raise their children. Whether you're a parent or someone who interacts with kids in any capacity, there's something in this episode for you! Here's what we cover: Understanding the extremes: Gentle Parenting: Focuses on emotional attunement, empathy, and attachment but can sometimes lack necessary boundaries. Tough Love Parenting: Emphasizes structure, discipline, and authority but can sometimes be overly rigid and emotionally distant. A Better Way – Love and Limits: Parenting is about balancing emotional connection and boundaries. Parenting the way God parents us means we are offering love while providing guidance. Structure without relationship leads to rebellion, and unchecked emotions can create chaos. Practical Parenting Takeaways: Reflect on whether your parenting leans too heavily on love or limits and make adjustments, tailoring your approach to each child's unique needs. If you default to tough love, ask for feedback from your kids, acknowledge any past mistakes, and be willing to apologize. If you lean towards gentle parenting, start setting and enforcing boundaries - even if your child protests at first. Be prepared for the extinction burst - behavior may initially escalate when limits are introduced but will stabilize over time. The truth is that parenting is challenging, but the good news is that you're not alone! God sees and cares about where you are in your parenting journey, and he is with you in the weeds of parenting. Send us a textIt's been a while since we checked out a genuine, good ol' fashioned haunted house. What better time than Spooky Season to correct that oversight! In this episode, we'll brave the shadows to hunt down the things that go bump in the night. First, we visit the Baleroy Mansion in the affluent Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia where sits a chair with a fatal reputation. Then, we travel by broomstick to the Avenues section of Salt Lake City, Utah where a couple moves into a late 1800s Victorian dream home where the ghosts are mostly tame until one night when the couple use sage to clear the house, but the only thing they get rid of is the one thing keeping an angry spirit at bay.Follow this link to vote for us for Best Local Podcast in the Illinois Times! Education has been one of the most prominent political and social issues in recent years, including during the recent primary elections when voters had the chance to make their voices heard. Some of the issues that we hear a lot about are chronic absenteeism, underfunded schools, the battle between public schools and for-profit charters, and diversity and representation in the classroom. On this episode, I am happy to welcome the president of the Washoe County School Board of Trustees to talk about these issues and more. Beth Smith was recently re-elected with a huge margin, large enough that she has secured her seat and won't have to compete in a general election in the fall. On this episode we talk about the important issues I mentioned, as well as the recent superintendent selection process and Beth's own story of getting involved in local education politics.
