In this second episode with Emmanuel Ortega (Babelito from Latinos Who Lunch) a researcher, curator, podcaster, and recent YouTuber (Unsettling Journeys) dedicated to uncovering the histories behind Mexican, Latin American, and Latinx identities by examining the arts (as well as the visual and material cultures and built environment) created before the invasion of Tenochtitlán, during the colonial period, around the waves of Independence from Europe, and into our contemporary world. We continue talking about the journey of a Mexican scholar into American academia, we discuss the conflicts between de-colonial history and anti-colonial practices in history. We talk about the work of Ramón Grosfuguel and the Epistemicides of the 16th century in order to understand anti-colonial gestures, and revisionist history practices. Finally, we get to architecture or the built environment by discussing the Casta paintings, their depictions of race, gender, and class (tools of hate - Kirsten Pai Buick) Reccomendations Silencing the Past by Michael-Rolph Trouillot Unsettling Journeys - Youtube Channel Imagining Identity in New Spain by Magali Carrera

In this episode, I talk to Emmanuel Ortega (Babelito from Latinos Who Lunch) a researcher, curator, podcaster, and recent YouTuber whose work looks to deconstruct the politics of colorism in colonial and contemporary Latin America by analyzing the visual culture of the colonial period and the politics of class and race classification behind the caste system. Springing from his research interests, Ortega has curated in México and the United States. Babelito is one half of one of the podcast that inspired the creation of this podcast, Latinos Who Lunch, and currently is working on a youtube channel titled Unsettling Journeys, dedicated to uncovering the histories behind Mexican, Latin American, and Latinx identities by examining the arts (as well as the visual and material cultures and built environment) created before the invasion of Tenochtitlán, during the colonial period, around the waves of Independence from Europe, and into our contemporary world; that he discusses further in our conversation. We talk about the journey of a Mexican scholar into American academia, and the role that the "newly discovered" need for diversity in the Ivory Tower has affected Black and Brown voices. We also talk about modernity and mobility, the role of new media in the creation of academic portfolios, and the accessibility of knowledge. How podcasts, youtube channels, and others are helping to reach larger audiences, but also how these are not yet fully accepted in traditional academic circles as accomplishments through "tenure track" i.e. For lack of time, and because what happens when two Juarenses are left to talk about their life experiences in the U.S.?, we didn't get to talk about architecture and space. But the promise for a future recording of an episode where such topics are going to be discussed was made. From colonial architecture and its systems of oppression. Where does it come from? (not just Spain) and, What of it has prevailed in modern and contemporary architecture in Mexico?... and much more to come in a future episode. Hey everyone. Thanks for tuning in to round 2 of the special two-year anniversary edition where I revisit three past guest of the show. Last week, I talked with Tereneh Idia, an internationally based fashion designer, which if you haven't listened to yet, go check it out. But for this week, I am chatting with Justin Favela, an artist known for his colorful large-scale installations and sculptures that manifest his interactions with American pop culture and the Latinx experience. In 2018, Justin won the Alan Turing LGTBIQ Award. He also hosts two culture-oriented podcasts, "Latinos Who Lunch" and "The Art People Podcast." I met Justin 3 years ago and have maintained a close long-distance friendship with him since. Hopefully you can hear our familiarity with each other in our banter as we chat about José María Velasco, performance art, working for Hollywood, and finding a ranch for the future. Justin also inspired me to create this podcast, so visiting him again on the two year anniversary seemed important as we reflect on both the past and present. I have got one last special guest for next weeks episode. Until then, I hope you enjoy this.Links Mentioned:Latinos Who LunchThe Art People PodcastMy first interview with JustinRoxanne GayThe Ajumma ShowJade+XD FodcastWe Love Trash PodcastThe Read PodcastAnother Round PodcastFor Colored Nerds PodcastJosé María Velasco GómezMarjorie Barrik Museum - Future RelicsLou Diamond PhillipsLa Bamba Ritchie ValensSelenaSeven Magic TiresJustin's Show at Mass MocaJustin's Show at the Amon Carter MuseumFollow Seeing Color:Seeing Color WebsiteSubscribe on Apple PodcastsFacebookTwitterInstagram

Viva Las Vegas! On this episode, we chat about our recent vacation to Las Vegas. Joining us is Favy Fav, co-host of "Latinos Who Lunch" and host of "The Art People Podcast." Thanks to his love and knowledge of Sin City, were able to experience it through the eyes of a local resident. With Favy as our tour guide, we visited some of the area's most fascinating hidden gems and indulged in fare from dueling taco spots, Korean-Mexican fusion, and of course, ate at The Original Lindo Michoacan on East Desert Inn!
FavyFav and Babelito of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast joined us to talk about the behind-the-scenes of creating a podcast, the rise of faux brujas a.k.a. cultural appropriation, if and how they embrace their inner bruja. They even opened up about why at first they chose to use nicknames instead of using their real names when launching and how liberating it's been in committing to being vulnerable on the show. This honest conversation on culture, politics, and importance of visibility in the podcast world might leave you hungry for more. Check them out at Latinos Who Lunch for more and listen to their podcast! #supportbrownpodcasts Shoutout to Pam Covarrubias from the Cafe con Pam Podcast and the FEMININE Podcast By The Modern Curandera, both available on iTunes.
Hello Spicy Eyes listeners! We've got some updates for you in between episodes. Thanks, as always, for your patience and for tuning in — we put a lot of work into research, field recording and producing this show, which takes time! But in the meantime, here's what's in store in this bonus episode: We got a chance to hang out with a few very cool Vegas podcasts: Alison and Jacob of Wild & Free took us to Battista's Hole in the Wall, an old school red sauce Italian classic, and we recorded some sounds at dinner (an accordion player makes an appearance) Kristy hung out with Cheftimony host Graham MacLennan and they sat down with Chef Jamie Tran at Black Sheep (find the episode preview and a mini interview with Kristy here!) We went to a Latinos Who Lunch live show at UNLV's Barrick Museum, and got a very sweet shout out (thank you to Babelito & FavyFav!). Keep your eyes peeled for that episode, featuring guest Professor Erika Abad, coming soon. We also answer a few questions from friends of Spicy Eyes: How did we meet? What's our favorite nostalgic food? What's the spiciest thing we've ever tried? (Yep, you'll have to tune in to find out!) Last but not least, we're sharing not just one, but TWO daily nuggets with you in this bonus episode! The first daily nugget features farmer Amanda Yeckel, who gave us a tour of her beautiful property at Cluck-It Farm after a farm dinner in May. FYI, they're opening up registration for the fall CSA program. Daily nugget #2 comes to us from our friend Sungjoon Koo, a photographer and bartender running the bar program at the brand-new Sushi Kame on Spring Mountain Rd. He shows us how he puts a cocktail together — lots of great shaker sounds! The outro music was composed by Jeremy Klewicki. That's all for today! Thanks everyone.

On this episode, we KiKi with FavyFav (aka Justin Favela), a Las Vegas-based artist & co-host of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast. Employing tissue paper & cardboard as his principle media, he often takes over entire gallery spaces. His first installation in New York is entitled "Recuerdame," and will open at the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling on October 17. During our KiKi with Favy, we chatted about his Las Vegas Roots; his unique form of artistic expression; the origins of Latinos Who Lunch; the problematic nature of our theme song, "Fat Fish"; and much more!

This week we are honoring a dear compadre que se nos fue. Ed Fuentes was a cultural journalist and one of the biggest Latinos Who Lunch supporters. Fuentes was a writer and an advocate for Latinx artists on the West Coast and his absence will be felt for a long long time… Rest in power amigo. Our friend and colleague Ed Fuentes talked to us about his career as an advocate for Chicanx arts. Through his blog, Paint this Desert, he was able to highlight the artistic diversity of our communities in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Ed also discusses the perils of being the only Chicano MFA student in a department dominated by white male artists, and the importance that public murals have in the fight for resistance against oppression and gentrification. #podin #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod Photo: Leila Navidi
It's finally here! In this episode los chicos de Latinos Who Lunch break down Alfonso Cuaron's Roma. Before getting down to business, Babelito gives you his recipe for pozole and FavyFav continues to make us salivate over all his Guate foods. Within the first few minutes of the film, both Favy and Babelito felt uneasy with the way Cleo (Yalitzia Aparicio's character) was portrayed and the power dynamics between a privileged white director and the memories of his indigenous maid. They address the recent success of three Mexican film directors in Hollywood and the politics of representation that have placed Roma on a pedestal. Latinos Who Lunch are back this week to celebrate la patrona de las Americas, la Virgen de Guadalupe. The tilma, or cloth on which the image of the Virgin appeared is housed in the Basilica of Mexico City and it is believed to have been a creation from God, appearing miraculously to Juan Diego 500 years ago. Babelito dissects this highly venerated image to better understand its place in Latinx popular imaginary. FavyFav relates the ways in which he has engaged with the image given his religious upbringing and the way contemporary artists have used what is perhaps the most important painting ever created in the Americas. Listen as they both dissect history and dismantle some popular myths behind this important art work. And as always remember to send your questions to AskLWLPod@gmail.com and we might read them on a future episode. #podin #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod

Your FAVY Could Never! On this episode, we KiKi with Favy Fav (aka Justin Favela), a Las Vegas-based artist & co-host of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast. The inspiration for Favy's large-scale installation pieces are drawn from his own Latino roots, as well as popular culture. Employing tissue paper & cardboard as his principle media, he often takes over entire gallery spaces. His first installation in New York is entitled "Recuerdame," and will open at the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art & Storytelling on October 17.During our KiKi with Favy, we chatted about his Las Vegas Roots; his unique form of artistic expression; the origins of Latinos Who Lunch; the problematic nature of our theme song, "Fat Fish"; and much more!
On episode five of the fourth season of Latinos Out Loud, Rachel and Juan Bago discuss judging sketch comedy at the People’s Improv Theatre for its “Bragging Rights” competition, Frank tells us about the lack of WiFi during his trip to the Dominican Republic, and special guest host, Gabe Gonzalez fills in for Jaime and reminisces on guest hosting on LOL’s very first season! On “Bochinche Bites”, Bago steps in and tells us about drunk birds in Minnesota, the brawl the ensued after the McGregor and Khabib match and the creative way Bansky shredded his own artwork. Fresh off the plane from DR, “Frank-spiracy News” coves how the United States artificially shakes the Earth. The crew interviews Favy Fav and Babelito of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast and discusses the strides LatinX podcasters have made, their interesting art careers, travels and more. Hosted by Rachel, the crew plays the “His Panic Trivia Challenge” in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, where Favy Fav and Babelito went up against Gabe and Bago on behalf of two members of our live studio audience, to see who knows more about being Latino! Hello hello helloooo (que show que show que show)! We're changing things un poquito today in honor of our podcast amigos Latinos Who Lunch, whose Radio Lonchea homages to our format inspired us to return the favor. This one's definitely a different one for us! We're ditching the música (just for this week!) to have a long-form convo about our podcast, the rationale choices that we've made behind the scenes, sexism and misogyny in podcasting, name and gender anxiety, and a little bit about our lives outside of Radio Menea. Go follow Latinos Who Lunch, #SupportLatinxPodcasts, y hasta la próxima (w lots of música, no se preocupen)! Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2018/02/09/episode-46-latinas-who-brunch

The process of healing can be a lifelong process and it's good to have friends like Pérez to help you along the way! #DoctoraCorazón #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod
Latinos Who Lunch visited D.C. and recorded an episode with the guys from Caught Up Podcast! This topical and conversational podcast digs into the politics and issues that affect POC communities around the United State. Before that, FavyFav and Babelito experiment with long distance recording, catch up with all their activities and talk about future events. #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod

Qué show?! As we mentioned in our 50th episode thankstravaganza, from here on out we're going weekly, so who better to kick off this new age of mess than the one and only Babelito of Latinos Who Lunch! A badass of Latinx art history and one half of the LWL podcast, Babelito is a barrel of laughs and a huge sweetheart. While in NYC on some art-related biz, Babelito was gracious enough to pass through the studio and discuss one of his favorite topics: Café Tacvba. And boy do we go in! With the exception of a cover by Gepe, this episode is wall to wall Cafeta and discussions on how the band helped shape Mexico's modern musical identity. On top of that we talk podcast shop, and Beverly's and Babelito's forgotten Vegas history, all of course, with a healthy side of mess. Enjoy, y nos vemos en el mosh pit!
