Imagine the tropical grooves of Colombia and Mexico in an avant-garde setting. That's the ethos of Ruido Tovar; the new collaborative project between Eblis Alvarez of Meridian Brothers and Camilo Lara of the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Before releasing their debut self-titled record together, both Alvarez and Lara were known to experiment with electronics, fusing modern sounds with music styles that are typically considered traditional. Alvarez put a spin on cumbia and salsa with his band Meridian Brothers, while Lara pushed the electronica movement in Mexico forward with his project, the Mexican Institute of Sound.  Coming together as Ruido Tovar, the duo joins the Soundcheck host, John Schaefer, with their pocket-sized effects pedals and compact synthesizers to perform some new songs from their new record and discuss their journey in music thus far.  (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1. Oktober 2023 konnte man den Eindruck gewinnen, dass die einzigen politischen Strömungen, die die Monströsität des vernichtungsantisemitischen Angriffs auf ein hippieeskes Musikfestival und auf den jüdischen Staat seriös einzuschätzen wussten, rechte Kreise waren. Nachdem sich die globale Linke in der übergroßen Mehrheit von jeglichem kritischen Denken in dieser Sache verabschiedet hat, schien das rechte politische Spektrum das einzige, das diesbezüglich nicht den Verstand verloren hatte. Das schmerzt umso mehr, als dass man viele gesellschaftliche Vorstellungen dieser politischen Richtungen nicht teilt und deren dahinterstehende Grundannahmen weitgehend ablehnt. Dass auch das rechte und insbesondere neurechte politische Spektrum in der Frage des Verhältnisses zum jüdischen Staat und zum Judentum an sich äußerst ambivalent denkt und agiert, wollen wir in der heutigen Sendung darlegen. Bzw. darlegen tut das Dr. Matheus Hagedorny in seinem Beitrag „Ambivalente Projektionen – Neurechte Israel- und Islamdebatten vor dem 7. Meridian Brothers, founded by musician Eblis Álvarez, fuses a love of classic salsa with cumbia, vallenato, spacey psychedelia, and wacky samples for a playful dance party. With a body of songs containing some poignant social commentary about our obsession with technology, fear of war, police brutality, and other issues, the music hearkens to the salsa dura era (think Fania All-Stars); even the legendary Ansonia label took note and invited Meridian Brothers to be their first new signing in more than 30 years. Jetzt präsentiert er sein fünftes Album – und hat sich dafür viel Unterstützung aus Kolumbien geholt. Denn neben dem kanadisch-kolumbianischen Shooting Star Lido Pimienta sind auf «La Estrella» auch die Stimmen des Schwesternduos Las Añez, sowie jene der Meridian Brothers aus Bogotá zu hören. Auf die instrumentalen Interludes mit Vogelgezwitscher hätte Chancha Vía Circuito aber gut und gerne verzichten können.

Meridian Brothers - Metamorfosis (feat. Grupo El Renacimiento) from the 2022 album Meridian Brothers & El Grupo Renacimiento on Ansonia Records. For Eblis Álvarez, frontman and figurehead behind Bogotá band Meridian Brothers, the imaginary is a primary source of inspiration. His latest record, and 11th since the band's inception in 1998, is a collaboration with a fictional band called Grupo El Renacimiento. Creating an entire backstory for the band, Álvarez claims them to be a 1970s salsa group from a small village in Colombia who had a small amount of fame but then were forgotten after the band delved further into drugs and partying. But that's not the only story on Meridian Brothers & El Grupo Renacimiento. There's also a Kafka-esque storyline on today's Song of the Day “Metamorfosis,” in which the formerly-human protagonist wakes up to find themselves transformed into a robot. “Memory is dying,” reads the English translation of the lyrics. “They've already connected the internet to my lung /To my heart.” “Salsa singers in the '70s, they used to sing about, you know, like, actual problems,” Álvarez told NPR in an interview. “Social problems, political problems, human problems of emotional problems. So I decide to imitate that attitude - ‘Metamorfosis' - that tells about this dystopian world where technology takes over the human brain, takes over the human body, takes over the human societies and control it.” This record is also important because it marks the first release in 30 years from long-standing label Ansonia Records. Created in 1949 by Puerto Rican immigrant Rafael ‘Ralph' Pérez, the New York-based label was the home for a surprisingly large, diverse, and important catalog of seminal recordings featuring traditional and popular Latin rhythms and sounds. Genres such as música jíbara, plena, bomba, danza, son, guajira, bolero, danzón and merengue are well represented, as are guaracha, mambo, cha-cha-cha, pachanga and boogaloo. Formed in 1998,The group identifies as “B-class” salsa whose music explores human struggles in the urban city landscape, with themes such as police brutality, social marginalization, and addiction. Composer/ multi-instrumentalist Eblis Álvarez writes, plays, arranges, and records Meridian Brothers' albums solo, and performs live with a band. The irreverent music melds electronic and organic instrumentation, South American, Caribbean, and Mexican rhythms and folk traditions.
