In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I sat down with entrepreneur and Former Elite Gymnast, Carl Paoli, as we spoke about a range of fitness topics and their impact on longevity. We discussed aesthetic vs functional gymnastics and working through progressions. Carl also detailed his take on emotional fitness as the foundation for developing health and longevity. Carl Paoli is a Swedish-American Life Teacher who grew up in Spain as an Elite gymnast, where even as a kid, his passion for physical activity led him to delve into action sports such as snowboarding and wakeboarding. It was gymnastics, however, that shaped his discipline for hard work, determination, and now his professional career. Throughout his career, he trained and competed on the national circuit for over fifteen years as an Elite Gymnast and achieved various honors, including a National Gold Medal for Vault. After retiring from gymnastics, Carl graduated with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche specializing in Genetic Engineering and Coral Reef Ecology. Afterward, he pursued a career in Marine Biology. Even though he found work relevant to his studies, his mind was never far from sports and fitness. It was Carl's entrepreneurial spirit that brought him back to the US in 2004 where he pursued his passion for coaching, led him to find CrossFit, and launched GymnasticsWOD in 2010. Together with Jami Tikkanen, he assisted in coaching Annie Thorisdottir to win back-to-back CrossFit Games titles in 2011 and 2012. Carl also became a member of the Ownership Group of STRIKE MVMNT, a footwear and apparel brand where he currently serves as their Global Ambassador. Shortly thereafter, he used his background in gymnastics and fitness to write his New York Times Bestselling book “Free+Style”. Since the launch of GymnasticsWOD, Carl has virtually and physically coached thousands of athletes around the world through the website and by way of his Freestyle Connection seminars. He is also the founder of Freestyle Connection - a Media and Digital Learning company based in San Francisco, California established in 2012 dedicated to helping people design a life worth living through fitness and personal development. You can check out more about Carl through his website and his bestselling book here. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

Hey there and welcome to the we move podcast. This week we are catching up with Carl Paoli, who was the first person we had lined up to see when we started weMove. For those of you who haven't heard of Carl, I heard of Carl as a result of his bestselling book Freestyle Connection, What I then found out was that he was coaching gymnastics movements to various action sports athletes and also at the time some of the fittest people on the planet in the CrossFit realm. So he came with a professional pedigree that interested me back in 2015/16 when I was exploring movement over sport. So Chris and I met with Carl in San Francisco that began the start of a connection as we were unknowingly on a similar trajectory for challenging what we had become for we can be.Carle was definitely experiencing, and explaining movement in that way. To move by feel, to understand the foundations, and when, when you understand the foundations, you can go and explore for yourself, and that makes the movement the practice whatever you're doing so much richer.Last year I noticed a turning down of the volume on social media, as many of us did. And I was curious to speak to him then but it didn't feel the right time so we just let him do his thing. And then this year he posted a few posts that caught my eye and he was talking about this idea of what's beyond the training, why are we training, why are we moving. And that's very much, where Chris and I are with our thoughts, films and directions of conversation so it felt like it could be an interesting conversation to hear his story and perspective of the last year, and moving away from the very things that lit him up in the first place. The movement itself, instead of the nice to have benefits of; success and acclaim. He is always very eloquent in what he's going through, very open and incredibly sincere. And I think that there are some points made that might be would be interesting for people who are questioning where they fit in the world at a moment and how to ignite the spark for movement and training. This is not how to guide, or a telling of anyone that they should do a certain thing. Rather, this is a personal account of Carls experience. Rediscovering His love of movement, and the power and stability of a dedicated daily practice.Carl has always been a very vocal about how the body is our way of experiencing the world around us. And as he says, our bodies are the instrument we use to interface with the external world. So when your instrument i.e. your body is clean and clear (your own definition) how you experience the world around you changes. That's what I take from this conversation anywayEnjoy the podcastAnd if you enjoy it, and you find some value in it, may I make a suggestion that you support the podcast by buying us a coffee, there is a link on our app on our website, and also the link in the bio of our instant, enjoy, and peace.

Carl Paoli has been at the forefront of the movement scene for decades. His career started as an accomplished gymnast in Spain, then transitioned to California where he started GymnasticsWod, and finally moved to Freestyle Connection and Lifestyle Design. Ready to take a deep dive us us? This week you're in for a treat as we share the interview we had as guests on the Freestyle Connection podcast with our good friend Carl Paoli. We've come to know Carl well over the last 18 months, having followed his coaching career for years and got to spend some time with him in London late last year. This interview was quite different and more like a 'therapy session' as Carl did a great job of both digging deeper and drawing out of us what the school of calisthenics really means to us both and we had a blast doing it!Ready to take a deep dive with us...? Carl also published his book, The Freestyle Connection in 2014, which went on to become a NY Times Best Seller. In this episode, we chatted with Carl over a cup of coffee about where he's been, and what he's been up to since releasing his NY Times Best-Selling book, The Freestyle Connection. What are you chasing? How far are you willing to push yourself? What if this is your last chance? We explore these and many other questions with movement coach and teacher, as well as former magician, barista, martial artist and soccer player Daniel Severin Petersen of the Freestyle Connection. We unravel his craving to learn and experiment, how he took uncertain leaps, facing the and following his fears, trying to fit in, and failing over and over and learning from the process. What do you get out of the conversation? The "secret sauce". The connection and skill transfer between movement, discipline, training, curiosity and following your passion.

In episode 36 of Black Flag Radio, we take you on an adventure that transcends movement with Carl Paoli of the Freestyle Connection. We uncover the reasons for why we do what we do at the gym, going beyond movement, and presenting how we can see the world differently; to see clearly the beauty of the world and how beautiful it can be. We also explore our needs, and how we can use meeting our needs to the benefit of others to bring out the best in them, and how taking responsibility for our movement practices can allow us to let go and become better, more free, ourselves.
Carl Paoli is a movement professional, coach and author, whose passion lies in sharing the language and beauty of basic human movement with others. After years of competitive gymnastics, Carl's studies took him across the globe introducing him to new sports, communities and career callings in the fitness industry, becoming a household name in Cross-Fit circles. Carl found a gap in the way movement was being taught and what he had experienced via his own practices, seizing the opportunity to create unique programming, methodologies and philosophies that are now sought out by coaches and professionals around the world. This is a really honest and inspiring conversation between Kathryn and Carl, two young movement creatives with well rounded practices, open minds, rootings in scientific teachings and philosophical ideals, who are not afraid to ask questions, chat about controversial issues and call upon others in the industry to explore and expand the conversations and language being used to communicate progression, adaptation, intent, interoception, and more. They talk about cultural holds and ideas, what problems need to be solved and how to cultivate awareness around the common thread that what people really need in life and in fitness, most of all, is themselves. Carl and Kathryn manage all of this, while holding great respect for all styles and disciplines in an effort to spark growth and change in individuals and the industry. Carl's book Freestyle, is a best seller, and his subsequent work has spawned an online community of thinkers and doers with resources and training programs dedicated to inform, encourage and connect.
