Would you say that the US is in war-time or peace-time? How do you know? The truth is, the nature of warfare has changed so fundamentally, that we're currently in a war we don't even recognize. It's the war that Russia, China, and other hostile foreign actors are fighting against us — weaponizing social media to undermine our faith in each other, our government, and democracy itself. World War III is here, it's in cyberspace, and the US is unprepared — and largely unaware. This week on Your Undivided Attention, we're fortunate to be speaking with Lieutenant General H. R. McMaster. General McMaster was the United States National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018. He has examined the most critical foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States, and is devoted to preserving America's standing and security.
"We need confidence in our republic, confidence in our ability to strengthen our republic, and we need to apply correctives to the problems we're encountering below the threshold of revolution." General H.R. McMaster, one of the most distinguished military figures in the United States, joins the podcast. In his role post-government and post-military, he has become a commentator on national trends and international issues, with a particular focus on democracy and the health of our democratic system. A student of history and passionate advocate for the aspirational ideals of the constitution, his remains a voice of reason and a calming presence in a sea of increasing fanaticism and extremism. Using history as our guide ("this country has been through many trials and tribulations”), General McMaster offers sage guidance for how American citizens can help one another collectively through these times. General McMaster and Daniel also take deep dives into music and into the history of America's longest war— Afghanistan. Support Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk. H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He was the 26th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018. From 2014 to 2017 McMaster designed the future army as the director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center and the deputy commanding general of the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). As commanding general of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, he oversaw all training and education for the army's infantry, armor, and cavalry force. His has extensive experience leading soldiers and organizations in wartime including Commander, Combined Joint Inter-Agency Task Force—Shafafiyat in Kabul, Afghanistan from 2010 to 2012; Commander, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Iraq from 2005 to 2006; and Commander, Eagle Troop, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Operation Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. The worst case scenario just got even worse. Today, ISIS-K struck the area outside the airport in Kabul twice. Two bombings, one a suicide attack. The events resulted in casualties for both Americans and Afghans, something President Biden said was inevitable in a situation like this. There's finger pointing from all sides, but in the end the deaths ring loud and true. The first loss of American life in Afghanistan since February of 2020. Biden condemned today's attack by responding, "We will hunt you down and make you pay" Does this mean that the endless war won't be coming to and end after all?August 31st is just days away and intelligence tells us that there are more potential attacks. Revisiting our interview from last year with General H.R. McMaster where we asked the question: what does America gain by maintaining a military presence in Afghanistan? General McMaster brings decades of experience on the geopolitical stage to answer this question along with how we should address the escalating tensions with Russia and China. General McMaster is a retired Army Lieutenant General and former National Security Advisor. He is the author of "Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World." He served in Cold War Europe and led the Eagle Troop of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the first Gulf War. In 2004, he led the 3rd Armored Calvary in Tal Afar, Iraq, where he pioneered a new counter insurgency strategy. From February 2017 to April 2018, General McMaster served as National Security Advisor to the President. Follow him on Twitter at @LTGHRMcMaster. This episode originally premiered on September 27, 2020.
After serving many years in Afghanistan and Iraq, General McMaster was on the receiving end of policies and strategies disconnected from the reality on the ground. The tendency to view strategy only through one's own lens can be described as “strategic narcissism,” where we don't consider the influence other players have on an outcome. This calls for a shift towards “strategic empathy.” “Empathy is really our ability to consider, in particular, the ideology, the emotions, and the aspirations that drive and constrain the other.” ————————————————————————— To learn more about this episode, including podcast transcripts and show notes, visit *salt.org/talks* ( http://salt.org/talks ) Moderated by Anthony Scaramucci.

US propaganda and antagonistic attacks toward China have intensified in the age of the Trump administration. The US has started an economic war, closed a Chinese consulate, threatened Chinese academics on student visas, and more. Lee Camp looks at the impacts of this propaganda war and where they’re getting their ammo from. US citizens have reached new highs of animosity directed at China due to a lot of factors in the last few years. But the information is coming from a small number of ideologically biased groups. The new Cold War is just another push to preserve the crumbling US empire. Camp dissects the concern that General H.R. McMaster has for the prospect that the US could decrease the amount of horrific violence it spreads around the world in ‘Taking The News From Behind.’ Naomi Karavani and Camp discuss Google’s newest way of using your date to enhance the police state. “Reverse warrants” are used by law enforcement when they ask Google to reveal which users have searched for certain terms or been in certain places in a specific time frame. The existence of this type of intelligence gathering raises serious questions about privacy and technology in the modern world. The situation is so out of control that Google employees have helped raise the alarm. Natalie McGill reports on a push from the Department of Homeland Security to scrub complaints about their activities, Facebook spreading climate disinformation ads funded by right-wing organizations, and more.
The untold story of the past four years may be the level of consensus surrounding the Trump Administration's 2017 National Security Strategy, which argues great power competition with China, and to a lesser extent Russia, is our nation's central challenge. In the face of this competition, Democrats and Republicans alike have worked together on a whole host of issues to address this threat, whether it be securing America's 5G network or condemning the egregious human rights violations in Hong Kong or Xinjiang. The question is: will this agreement continue into the future, or fall prey to partisanship in a future administration? On this episode, the author of this national security strategy and former National Security Advisor, Lt. General H.R. McMaster, U.S. Army (Ret.) joins Rep. Gallagher to discuss these threats and ways the United States can better protect its interests abroad. Lt. General McMaster also discusses his new book, Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World, which outlines the critical role he played in reassessing our country's security challenges and shifting its priorities to address them, and his video series that goes in-depth on these issues. While they don't have the same optimism for the Eagles football season, they do share hope that the fundamental priorities outlined by the National Security Strategy will remain bipartisan into the future.

Recently an Iranian drone came within 100 yards of an American F-18 in the Persian Gulf. After a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shot, an Iran Navy patrol boat charged our ship before veering away. Recently I asked National Security Advisor General H. R. McMaster if the rules of engagement for U.S. forces operating in close proximity to the increasingly reckless Iranian forces were clear. General McMaster gave an emphatic “yes”—and also noted that President Trump would stand behind any American commander taking steps to protect his soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. This was a great message to hear from National Security Advisor McMaster—especially given the many dangers our forces are facing down around the planet. He made it clear that he is—and the President is—backing up American troops in harm's way. It's been too many years since such a policy was explicitly stated and backed by the Commander in Chief. Good for McMaster. Good for President Trump. And good for our military.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
