Ladder leading to heaven, dreamed by Jacob

“At sundown he arrived at a good place to set up camp and stopped there for the night. Jacob found a stone to rest his head against and lay down to sleep. As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway.” (Genesis 28:11–12 NLT) God promised Abraham that He would make a great nation from Abraham’s descendants. Step one of the promised nation-building was giving Abraham and his wife Sarah a son, which God did when Abraham was one hundred years old. The son’s name was Isaac. When Isaac was a young man, he married a woman named Rebekah. When Isaac was sixty years old, Rebekah gave birth to twin boys. They named them Esau and Jacob. Esau was born first. In the culture of that day, the firstborn son was given special privileges, known as the birthright. The birthright included a leadership role in the family, the right to make judicial decisions, a double portion of the father’s inheritance, and a special blessing from the father. One day Esau returned from hunting, famished. Jacob was cooking a bean stew. He offered to give his brother a bowl of stew in exchange for Esau’s birthright. Esau agreed, which showed how little he cared about his birthright. Later, Jacob posed as his brother to trick his nearly blind father into giving Jacob his special blessing. The blessing gave Jacob divine protection. Whoever cursed him would be cursed by God, and whoever blessed him would receive God’s blessings. Esau was devastated—and furious—when he learned what his brother had done. He plotted to kill Jacob after their father died. To protect Jacob, Rebekah sent him away until Esau cooled off. While Jacob was on the run, he spent a night in a land named Luz. There, he had a dream in which he saw a stairway that extended from the earth all the way to Heaven. He saw angels going up and down the stairway. God spoke to him from the top of the stairway. He reaffirmed His covenant with Abraham and reminded Jacob that the land where he slept belonged to him and his descendants. What Jacob didn’t realize is that God had given him a glimpse of Jesus’ future work. Sin separated humans from God. There was no passageway between earth and Heaven, no hope for eternal life. But Jesus’ sacrifice changed that. He became the stairway to Heaven, the only way to eternal life. Jesus identified Himself with Jacob’s dream when He said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth” (John 1:51 NLT). In Genesis 32:9–16, Jacob prayed as he was on his way to make amends with Esau. He acknowledged the God of Abraham and Isaac as the true God. He confessed his own unworthiness. He brought his petition to the Lord. But it would have been better if he had said, “Lord, what should I do now?” Instead, he prayed and made his plans. In other words, he decided what he was going to do and then asked God to bless it. Is that not like us? We make our plan and then ask God to bless it. But that is not really praying about a matter. Instead, we should pray along the lines of “Lord, give me wisdom from Your Word and from godly people who will guide me scripturally. Help me do the right thing.” But Jacob did not do that. He wanted what was right, but he went about it in the wrong way. God helps those who can’t help themselves. This is what Jacob needed to realize. Let’s learn to seek out God’s will rather than bypass it. Reflection question: How do you feel about the claim that there are many different paths that lead to God? The Christian life is a journey. The way of the Lord is set before. Real spiritual enemies are on every side. And you are called to come and know Christ, and to mature in Him. Jacob gives us a glimpse of this journey. When he comes back in later chapters, he's a new man. Still stumbling, but transformed by the presence of God. By the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives us the presence of God. And with that presence, we are to mature in our Christian journey—still stumbling, but transformed.

Explore the story of Jacob's dream at Bethel. In Genesis 28 reveals God's incredible promises and unwavering faithfulness. We're reminded that even when we feel anxious or 'on the run' like Jacob, God meets us where we are. The vision of the stairway to heaven serves as a beautiful metaphor, encouraging us to set our minds on eternal things amidst life's challenges. As we reflect on God's promises to Jacob - land, descendants, and blessing for all families - we're challenged to consider how these promises extend to us through Christ. This message urges us to expand our faith, seeing beyond our immediate circumstances to the grand tapestry of God's plan for our lives and families across generations.

Jacob's dream.

In these four chapters, we cover 20 difficult years in Jacob's life where he is refined by pain that God allows in his life. It all starts with God's promise to be with Jacob through it all. This is the right perspective for Christians today to have about their pain, trials, and discipline from God.

Genesis 28 - Following God's Word, and honoring your parents
Passage: 10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” 18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Sometimes we have to make a change which means we will feel alone, like when we leave home, start something new, or experience loss. Jacobs journey in Genesis 28 reminds us that even when we feel alone, God is with us. These are the times we must find assurance in Gods presence, promises, and purposes. How should we respond spiritually when we need to step out on our own?

In this podcast I urged all to listen to lessons 26 & 27. They deal with scripture that testifies of Yeshua, they testify of the Messiah, just like Jesus teaches us in John 5:39. Link to lesson 26 - https://lightofmenorah.podbean.com/e/genesis-26-gen-124-6-avram-and-sarai-travel-to-canaan-scripture-testifies-of-jesus/?token=7b18a182c5ac60c64ffb923a5c8b09c3 Link to lesson 27 - https://lightofmenorah.podbean.com/e/genesis-27-gen-121-9-dating-the-bible-abram-enters-canaan-2091-bc/?token=5027c2566f44fa01e45abf9300d201a0 In the Ten Commandments we say God commanded us not to lie. Sorry. He never said that in the Ten Commandments. He said ... לא תענה ברעך עד שׁקר Lo Ta'ahneh VayReckaka Ed Shaker Not Testify to Your Neighbor Falsely This is legal stuff meaning in court or in any legal proceeding you are not to testify with false statements against your neighbor. This a commandment as related to legal proceedings. (See the "Jerusalem Publication Society Torah Commentary Exodus," by Nahum Sarna, 1991). The actual commandment of God not to lie is found in Lev. 19:11 - "You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another." So, we need to revise things gang! We need 11 commandments to cover all the bases! So, do not lie. Some teach that no matter what you must not lie. In a TV program there were three religious men, an orthodox rabbi, a protestant pastor and the priest. The moderator, Dennis Prager, set up a situation to have the rabbi and pastor and priest comment on. The situation was that a woman was being chased by a sadistic rapist in a lonely park. She runs past you and asks you to help her. She hides and thus you have a choice when the evil rapist finally reaches you. You can lie and not tell him where she is hiding or you can not lie and thus put her in danger and perhaps serious injury and death. The pastor and priest said you can not lie and must tell the truth. They said you can tell the truth in such a way that perhaps will not give up her hiding place. The rabbi, however, said he'd lie through his teeth to save her and protect this innocent women. ("Torah Commentary Exodus," MP3 file, Dennis Prager, Part 14 of 57. This is part of Dennis Prager's teaching series on the Torah available at the website store at https://pragerstore.com/product-category/the-torah/complete-torah). So, we see a dilemma. What would you do? We are not to lie. But, in this lesson we find that Abraham lies. Sarah lies. And yet God does not discipline them. Moreover Abraham and Sarah do it twice! What's going on? Who is right? The rabbi says he'd lie to save her. The Christians say no, we can't lie. On top of that the Catholic priest and the Protestant pastor are only teaching their opinion and not fact from the Bible. One has to be very careful that one does not teach their own opinion as Bible truth. The TORAH is the inspired word of God and it deals with real people in real life. Abraham and Sarah find themselves in a situation where they are caught between a rock and a hard place. This is just another example that God's TORAH is as applicable today as it was in 2091 B.C. In Genesis 28 we are told that Isaac in response to Rebekah's entreaty sends Jacob to Haran to seek for a wife who is of the Abrahamic faith. The Abrahamic promises are given to Jacob in verses 3-4. Jacob took his journey in haste still worrying over Esau's intention of killing his twin. Verses 6 to 9 tell us that Esau has not the faintest idea of what being a faithful believer means. He takes two more wives, who have descended from Ishmael. In verse 10 we are told of Jacob's arrival at Bethel (“the house of God”); although referred to earlier in the record, it was most likely so named because of the incidents in this chapter. Jacob must have been wearied from his journey as he took a stone for a pillow; and dreamed of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven. There were angels on the ladder; and, we are told that they were first ascending, and secondly descending upon the ladder. Word order is critical to observe and carefully read in the Bible, as Hebrews 5 explains. If they ascend first that means they are already with Jacob to help him(see Hebrews 1:14). They go to heaven and return after having been instructed in what further aid is needed (Revelation 3:5). Verse 13 tells us that Yahweh (most likely Michael – the angel who bore the Name of his God) stood, as a caring supervisor of those providing the help, at the top of the ladder. All things associated with the salvation of His children are of God and from Him. Some people have mistakenly used this chapter to suggest that the text teaches “we go to heaven when we die”. In fact, it teaches the very opposite. The angels were with Jacob on earth providing him aid. Notice also in the words that immediately follow Jacob is promised the Land covenanted to Abraham and that through the seed of Jacob (the Lord Jesus Christ) blessing will come to all nations of this earth (the NT says the same, Romans verse 13). Next the Almighty offers to Jacob daily care and protection throughout his sojourn; until he returns to the Promised Land (verse 15). On awakening Jacob felt the awesomeness of the place, where he had slept; and reverentially names it “the House of God” (Bethel). He set up the stone upon which he had slept, and “anointed (Hebrew Massiah – i.e Christed it) the stone and declaring it to be the pillar of the house (Matthew 16 verses 16 to18 and 1 Corinthians 3 verses 11, 16 and 17 Ephesians 2 verses 11to 22, please read them slowly and consider carefully. This is the first use of “anointing” in the Bible. In acknowledgment of the overshadowing care of the Almighty and the promise of inheritance and providence of the LORD Jacob promises to give a tenth of all (a tithe) back to his Sovereign to show that all we receive is a blessing, of which we are unworthy, from the Father.

On today's episode, Pastor Cameron discusses how Jacob named the city where he had his vision Bethel, meaning "the house of God." As believers, we need to remember that everywhere we go should become a home for God's presence!
Another aspect of Jacob's transformation was that he had visions from God - when God spoke to Him it gave Jacob confidence that God would be working through the trials that lay ahead. Join Pastor Cameron as he considers Jacob's vision on today's episode.

This is the famous dream: “Jacob's Ladder.” As he was on the way to his Uncle Laban's place, he spent the night. He had a dream in which he saw a ladder with divine messengers (i.e. angels) moving up and down the ladder. God then spoke, reiterating the promise of numerous descendants and the gift of the land. Jacob commemorated the occasion by converting a stone which he had used as a pillow into a pillar, upon which he poured oil. He also responded to the dream by acknowledging God's presence. He called the place “the house of God” (=Bethel). He also made a vow to God. That was the good news. The bad news was that he prefaced the vow with a disturbing “if.”
“God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.” Genesis 28:3
Pastor Kevin continues our Wednesday night study through the book of Genesis.
Jesus came to show us what God is like. But the coming of Jesus, in his lowly incarnation & birth at Christmastime, was the fulfillment of what the Scriptures had been saying for centuries. At key moments in the OT, God revealed to his people what he was like. “But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2). In this series, we want to explore three OT stories where God reveals his character and purposes, and then see how these moments help us understand the revelation of God in Jesus.Advent stands at the beginning of the church calendar as a season of waiting and anticipation for the coming of Christ. To begin Advent, we explore Genesis 28, a story that reminds us that God is more present than we think, and invites us to see and recognize that "surely God is in this place."
In this episode, Ronn and Mike discuss Genesis 28 and the story of Jacob's ladder. They understand the staircase to symbolize the access that divine messengers had between heaven and earth, a “divine portal” of sorts, reminiscent of Genesis 11 and the Tower of Babel. Is it possible that certain locations on earth may serve as gateways or portals to the spiritual realm? The biblical significance of such places as Bethel and Jerusalem seem to point in that direction. The episode concludes with the story of Jacob's marriage to Leah and Rachel, highlighting Leah's loyalty to Yahweh and her role in the formation of the twelve tribes of Israel.

And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”
