Designer Spotlight: Jenette Bras | EP 168

Fashion Crimes Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 3, 2023 28:57

We are SO EXCITED to introduce our Very Special Guest this week - The Master of Bra-Fitting - Jenette Goldstein of Jenette Bras.    Jenette is a former award-winning actor (Aliens) and founder of Jenette Bras, a bra-fitting boutique specializing in sizes D-K, with locations in L.A. and Atlanta. Her tagline: "The alphabet starts at "D"."   As we all know - this is Holly's favorite subject. But for a twist, Holly is the one learning new lessons - and her MIND WAS BLOWN after a session with Jenette at her boutique in Atlanta.   Join us this week as Jenette shares her amazing story of how she went from Hollywood movie sets to creating a niche business from scratch - with no business experience - and has found great create success by serving woman in a category that has mostly been ignored.    LISTEN TO EPISODE 169 here!   ABOUT JENETTE: Jenette Goldstein is the co-founder and CEO of Jenette Bras, the nation's premier bra-fitting boutique for full-busted women. The company was founded in East Hollywood in 2009 and has grown to include four shops in Southern California and two in Atlanta.   She is also known for starring as Private Vasquez in the sci-fi horror film Aliens (1986), which won her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.   But what are here this week to celebrate her journey from successful actress to female entrepreneur – and the mountains she has climbed in-between.    HOW IT STARTED: For Jenette, this whole story may have started at age 12, when she visited the local “bra lady” with her mother, near a kosher butcher.    This was mortifying, but her visits to mall stores were even worse. The fits were abysmal; either the cups were too small, or the band slipped down to her waist. The problem continued plaguing her throughout her life.    With a 32 G bra size, describing herself as “small framed” yet “busty,” she grew increasingly frustrated.   But then, purely by divine intervention, she was in London and found a store servicing “girls that have a small ribcage and a fuller bust.” This experience literally changed her life, because this type of service and women's undergarments in untypical sizes did not exist in the United States.    Fastforward to somewhere around the time in her 40s, when she found acting jobs becoming scarce, because Hollywood sucks for women.    So, with no business experience, she and her artist husband decided to fill the missing gap in women's bra sizes and options by opening their first Jenette Bras boutique in LA.    She has since gone from launching a new career, a new company, expanding her brick-and-mortar stores, weathering the shutdown of COVID in the retail sector - and defying ageism – to become THE EXPERT in women's foundation wear.    HOW TO BUY A BRA THAT FITS: The Importance of Bra Comfort & Self-Acceptance   A bra is the most technical piece of clothing to produce. You can compare it to a men's tailored suit and or a finely made pair of shoes.   A bra must do the work. For instance, a skirt doesn't have to lift you, it can just look beautiful. The arch of a shoe must do the work: if it does support your arch, your whole body is affected.   The job of a bra is incredibly complicated. It must give comfort, support, and create a beautiful profile. Therefore, the research and development of making this item of clothing is intense.  “The price is not luxury pricing, it's quality pricing.” A bra is intimate. It is a beautiful piece of clothing. It's what you put on the first thing in the morning, and it should make you feel beautiful (as well as fit well, be comfortable and create a gorgeous silhouette).   That is your secret power. This is your blueprint for getting dressed. This is the foundation of building a great outfit.    Creating an outfit and feeling beautiful takes practice. And you really must start with the undergarments that support your body and give you the confidence that you need to feel fabulous in your clothes.   Everyone has what they call “problem areas,” or parts of the body they are self-conscious about. But this should not bring shame or embarrassment.    You have the power to reshape or support those areas so that you have the kind of confidence that makes you shine from within. Confidence is key. Holly and Jenette discuss their favorite undergarment brands, the benefits of a professional bra-fitting, and how bras are constructed so you can become an educated consumer!   We had SO MUCH FUN meeting Jenette, and we are grateful for the wealth of knowledge she has imparted on us this week!   Get Episode 168 wherever you get your podcasts - and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel to see this full interview.  HAVE YOU JOINED THE BOOK CLUB?   In case you missed the WORLDWIDE RELEASE PARTY for Holly's new book…. Did you know that a person's style and fashion sense (or lack thereof) can be linked to their emotional well-being?   In this episode, Your Favorite Personal Stylist, Holly Katz, shares a simple outline of what it means to have a sense of style, why it is important for everyone to have one, and how to develop your own style so you will have the CONFIDENCE to tackle just about anything your job, your social life or your personal life may throw at you.   Get EPISODE 163 now here, or wherever you get your podcasts!   Next time you're out in public somewhere, just stop and look around. Take a moment to notice how people are dressed and what they are wearing. You'll see who looks dressed and put-together. And who doesn't. You'll see people who are dressed with intention. And people who are not dressed with any thought at all.   Not that people who are dressed well magically have their life together. But what they do have is the knowledge of the importance of style.    Person A is aware of the world around them, and how they are perceived by others. Person B is someone who does not have the confidence or enough knowledge to know the impact their image has on their daily life. And it is not their fault.  “Your self-esteem is linked to how you feel about yourself, which totally dictates your style.” BE A FASHION HERO!  If you listen to this podcast, you know it is Holly's life passion to help people use fashion and style as a tool to get you ahead in life, not leave you behind. Style is subjective and different for every person.    And if you listen to this podcast, or have purchased Holly's book, you know she has some VERY SIMPLE steps to avoiding common Fashion Mistakes.    Now that you have this very important information, and perhaps while you are waking up to your own sense of style, help a fashion bestie out if you can! Since you look fabulous already, and are getting fashion help every week, wouldn't it be nice for you to help somebody else look fabulous?   This is how fashion karma works. It is universal law. You can't just be sitting here listening, getting all this fashion knowledge, and keeping it all for yourself and let your friends walk around looking like a hot mess. Not. Okay.   if you love someone and you want to be the bestest friend that you can, then you want what is best for them. You're going to help them in any capacity you possibly can. And this includes giving fashion advice to those you love.   Send them this podcast! Buy them Holly's new book! Help a fashion friend out if you can.   HOW TO DEVELOP A STYLE:   Get out of your comfort zone. Or as we like to call it, your “Lazy style zone.” Identify your body type. This is critical. Real people are not supermodels. Find your shape and embrace it.  Get fitted and purchase the correct undergarments. You need the proper foundation for every single outfit. Period. Have a shopping plan. Don't do all your shopping online. Go INTO A STORE and try things on! Once you get of sense of how things fit your body type, then you can shop online. Slowly build your wardrobe with the items you NEED. Follow brands and people on social media and follow or make Pinterest boards of the styles you like. (Follow Holly on IG and Pinterest for her easy style guides!) Talk to friends and family about you fashion interests. You can learn a lot from people who know you best.  Clean your damn closet out. Get rid of all the negative energy old clothes hold when they don't fit well and remind you of that on a daily basis. KEEP EVOLVING: By following these easy steps, you will soon learn more about what you like, and want you don't like! After a while you will find that you are starting to like most your clothes. Then, people are going to start noticing something different about you.    And finally, you will have more confidence about yourself, and feel good about yourself. Because you look good!   Now you are dressing with intention. This is not about money or designer labels. This is about understanding how having a sense of style – through clothing and accessories – can make a positive impact in your life.    And this will become your new superpower. JOIN THE BOOK CLUB! How To Style Boots | EP 115

Fashion Crimes Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2022 22:12

If you've been following this podcast at all, you will know by now that Holly loves to talk about boots. All sorts of boots – all styles, all heel heights, all brands.  Holly Loves Boots...and you should too. She has reported seeing them everywhere at NY Fashion Week in the Fall of 2022, she owns a bunch herself and she almost never gets through a styling conversation without mentioning them at least 10 times. HOW. EV. ER. What we have not yet discussed is “How to Style Boots,” which is different from “designers are showing boots right now,” and “everyone is wearing boots this season.” #FACTS   Example:  If you are a woman of a certain age, and you think you want to wear boots that go up to the top of your knees or even to the middle of your thighs, you need to try them on first.    If you have crepey skin that falls over your boot tops, these are not the boots for you.  (You know what we are talking about, don't act like you don't!) Get EPISODE 115 here! There is absolutely no reason you cannot wear any style of boot you love. Cowboy boots, vintage boots, the new lug-sole boot. Boots are timeless (if not practical and just fab). What matters is HOW you wear them. (Pro Tip: As always, Holly has curated an episode-specific Pinterest board with all the style suggestions mentioned in this episode. It is always fun to follow along while you listen!) So, let's start with the differences. Boots are usually determined by the height of the shaft, or the amount of leather or material that covers the lower part of your leg.   Booties:  The shortest shaft, stops at your ankle. Make sure the ankle opening is comfortable, and not rubbing your tender ankle bone skin off. Booties are a great way to get a boot look under jeans without a large shaft that's going to look bulky. Booties are dressy if they have a high or stiletto heel, and can be sexy.   Mid-Height: The shaft stops in the middle or top of your calf.  This is typically a cowboy boot and is a style that will never die. Wear them with shorts, pants, skirts, maxi dresses, or jeans. They are not, however, considered dressy. This is a great way to bring something dressy down a notch to make it more casual. This is a very important fashion fact. #takenotes   Below the Knee:  This is the most common, comfortable, and popular style of boot. They look great on people of any height, and can be worn with dresses, skirts, slacks, jeans, and even shorts and tights in the winter! You can wear them season after season. They might go in and out depending on a hot trend, but they really don't go out of style. These are keepers.   Thigh-High: These go over the knee or up onto your thigh. These have the highest shaft. If you are 7 feet tall, you will love these boots and can wear them with short skirts, short shorts or over jeans – anything to show off your 6-foot legs!! If you are not 7 feet tall, well then, wear them under a dress that hits you at the knee to show a little boot when you sit. This is an excellent idea.   From there, you will find any heel height in combination with any shaft height. And, as with all shoes, a higher-heeled boot tends to be dressier, with mid-to-low heels being more versatile.    So how do you choose? Well, with some major caveats.   In the exact words of Holly, if you are going to wear a tall boot, especially ones up to your thighs, make sure it is super cold outside. If you're a hot natured person who is schvitzing all the time, an over-the-knee boot is not a good idea for you.   Another thing to think about if you are purchasing a new boot style is: Do you have the personal style to support this? If you are super conservative, or if this is a risky purchase for you, make sure you have something that you can actually wear with them - instead of just blindly purchasing something.    This is called a style plan, people. If you want an over-the-knee boot, you need to have the outfit to support this.    Cowboy boots: If you want a cowboy-style boot that's not real cowboy boot, but has the look of a cowboy boot, there are millions of good options. You can shop on Freebird to see different price points and quality, or you can go with a more authentic company like Luchesse,  Tecovas, Ariat or Dingo to get the real deal.  Fashion Facts: If you buy cowboy boots, you might want to go up a half- or full size because you're probably going to need a thicker sock. Also, if you're going to buy new boots, try to find a store to try them on first. You must see what the most comfortable and wearable fit is for you.  Ankle Boots/Booties: These are not necessarily a cowboy style. They can be plain or fancy, and are definitely worn for fashion. Fashion Fact: Low boots that are made for snow or rain are not booties, and you only wear them for inclement weather. Holly is watching. Don't do it.  Fashion Crime Alert! Do not wear Hunter rubber boots up to your knees if it is not pouring rain or a hurricane. And do not wear Ugg (we call them Uggggggly) boots if it is not 20 degrees outside. Period. You can walk the dog in them, fine. But these must be worn in. the. cold. Holly does not care what the weather was when you left your house. If it stops raining or it warms up, you better have a change of shoes in your trunk!    And finally, the Care and Maintenance of Boots.   If you're already taking great care of your shoes, most boot companies want you to use a leather conditioner or a non-silicone, waterproof stain protector.    For someone who's new to the boot trend, the care of leather is a learned art. Instead, get to know your local cobbler or find a shoe person.  Have your boots waterproofed, regularly cleaned, re-soled if needed, and fix those stiletto heels you keep ruining by stepping into the middle of cracks. Try not to do that, please.  In summary, anyone can pull off the boot trend! Just don't go too far out of your reality zone, try boots on before you buy them - and learn to take care of them so you can enjoy this timeless fashion trend forever.    FASHION CRIMES PODCAST “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed!”   Hosted by your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz.   www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

The result is a look is both sophisticated and sexy, with the drape and cut of gorgeous fabrics that always look fresh.    In this episode, she tells our Holly that her creations stem from art, her travels, and popular culture combine in unique prints and imaginative uses of color throughout her designs.    Innovation, too, finds its way into her work; she has often been the first to popularize a new technique or fabric, including sustainable fabrics such as denim made from recycled bottle caps and plant-based materials.    Nicole attended the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Apparel Design. For a year, she studied at L'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.    There she learned the art of fabric drapery and classical method of dressmaking. She has previously described the training sessions as “intense,” but the course gave much help in fabric manipulation, which soon became her signature style in her designs. Her outfits have been worn by Beyoncé Knowles, Angelica Huston, LeAnn Rimes, Jennifer Stone, Eva Longoria, Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Hutton, Cindi Lauper and Sheryl Crow, among others.   “Nicole's vision is to create sustainable, accessible luxury and premium fashion and lifestyle products for eco-conscious, empowered women and their families who want to look their best, feel good about their consumer choices, and participate in making the world a better place.”   THE BRAND: The Nicole Miller brand is a global fashion and lifestyle brand headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1982, the iconic brand has grown to be one of the premier names in American fashion.    “With an emphasis on signature graphic prints, luxe fabrics and innovative silhouettes, the womenswear collection cultivates a look of elegance with a hint of rebellion while bringing accessible luxury to the modern woman. Known for her skillful draping and unique detailing, Nicole Miller designs every piece for the woman who wants to look and feel her best.”   In addition to its contemporary womenswear lines, the company has partnered with leading licensees in numerous lifestyle categories including handbags, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, denim, activewear, sleepwear, kids, fragrance and beauty, and home, among others, and can now be found online and in over 1500 specialty and department stores worldwide.   The Interview: Fresh off Hamptons Fashion Week 2022, where she was celebrated and honored as one of America's most highly regarded fashion icons for 40 years, Nicole Miller graces our podcast with her wit and wisdom regarding all things fashion!   From her deep American roots, to earning her degree at the Rhode Island Institute of Design and studying design in Paris, Holly uncovers all sorts of fascinating facts and insights about Nicole that most people would never know – all of which have blended to be Nicole's secret to fashion design success.   She is a force to be reckoned with; her signature style has traditionally been bold colors or black – with interesting cuts on clothes.    Her key concern has always been necklines, curves and proportion, with designs that are considered classic and sexy at the same time.    She creates cocktail dresses, lounge wear, wedding clothes and form-flattering gowns. She draws inspiration from a number of sources including contemporary art, cinema, 20th century cultures and architecture.   Nicole is first and foremost an artist and designer; she is also a skiier both on snow and the water. This outdoorsy and slightly competitive element is perhaps just one of the millions of layers that feed her enormous creativity. She also loves to cook and, of course, travel.   Listen to this episode to learn more:   From her start in the fashion industry to today, how has she been able to successfully manage and evolve her brand for 40 years?  What is Nicole Miller working on now? What does she see trending now? What fashion trend does she enjoy? What annoys her?  From owning brick-and-mortar stores all over the country to conducting online sales, how has she navigated running her company and kept up with sales trends? How was she able to expand to her brand into eyewear, jewelry, shoes, makeup, perfume, home goods - and now - a Rose'?  What is her favorite thing to wear? What does she do for fun? Laying The Smackdown With Brad and Nick!

Episode 2 has now been uploaded and should be avaliable soon. This is my first solo show as the audio in Episode 1 with Nick wasn't all that great, and him and i were never wanting to do it at the same time, so I did it alone, and he has given me a lot of grief over it...but that's another story for another time...anyway this episode features last weeks Smackdown, this week's RAW, this week's Smackdown, TNA and some news, and plugs for my favorite podcasts and a couple of games.
