Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark. Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. I samarbete med Moviezine & TellusStory. Skådespelaren Djimon Hounsou ansluter senare under avsnittet.
So many times we hear those mythical stories of a filmmaker who makes a short film and uploads it to YouTube in hopes of a big-time film producer sees it and comes down from Mount Hollywood and offers him or her a deal to turn that short into a studio feature. Today's guest had that happen to him and then some. On the show is writer/director David F. Sandberg.David's story is the "lottery ticket" moment I speak about so often on the show. His journey in Hollywood is remarkable, inspiring, and scary all at the same time. He created a short film called Lights Out. That short was seen by famed filmmaker and producer James Wan (Furious 7, Aquaman, The Conjuring) who offered to produce a feature film version at New Line Cinema. The feature version of the film was made for $5 million and grossed $150 million at the box office. Here's what the film is about. When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn't real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out.The film stars Teresa Palmer (“Triple 9”) as Rebecca; Gabriel Bateman (“Annabelle”) as Martin; Billy Burke (the “Twilight” franchise) as Martin's father, Paul; Alexander DiPersia (“Forever”) as Rebecca's boyfriend, Bret; and Maria Bello (“Prisoners”) as Sophie. After the success of Lights Out he tackled the horror prequel Annabelle Creation. That film went on to make over $300 million at the box office with a $15 million budget.Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker's possessed creation, Annabelle. The studio Gods were pleased with David because he was offered New Line Cinema's Shazam!, the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV's “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV's “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Shazam! was a box office smash.David and I discuss his days making short films, which he still makes on the side, working in the studio system, his filmmaking philosophy, how he could afford a place to stay in Los Angeles while he was in pre-production on Lights Out and what it takes to make it as a filmmaker in today's world.Enjoy my conversation with David F. Sandberg.

This might be consecutive weeks with Pete, but more importantly, Andrew is back. He was absent last week for SOME reason (who's a sleepy boy), but he's back now, as you will see right out of the gate. This week kicks off quickly, after Andrew plugs some future shows, with his defense of Velma. Admittedly Kevin has not watched much of it, but the debate over what makes this show any kind of good is solid banter. Kevin Takes over in an attempt to be quick. He talks about the new release of the Dead Space remake. Short story short there, it's badass and everyone should play it. In what should have been an even shorter story, Kevin also brings up the new game, Hogwart's Legacy. This turns into a philosophical tangent that is definitely worth listening to. Finally they get into their Conjuring watchlist and discover Annabelle Creation and The Nun. Both of these films are decent horror films but are slowly slipping down the list in the franchise. They seem to suffer from the diminishing returns that all horror franchises have over time. They also discuss the film The Taking of Deborah Logan, a semi-found footage film that has some very problematic issues, but isn't the worst film ever either. Finally, we get to the part you are paying for (you are paying, right??) which is The Last of Us. Andrew gets a chance to throw in his 2 cents around episode 3 before everyone jumps into episodes 4 and 5. As one might guess, the guys love the show. That being said, Kevin does have one complaint to share about this show and game he loves. As always, thank you for watching. We had a lot of fun this week and we hope it's evident. Next week should bring a heavy discussion about the new Ant Man film, which should be fun. Don't forget to like and subscribe and set up notifications.
