Welcome Back! Enrique Mendoza and Ren Olivieri came to record this podcast together in person… we just had to wait for Ren to visit Los Angeles from Toronto.                                                                                                                                                                                                       But this All-American trio you're about to hear – Ren from Canada, Enrique from Guatemala, and yours truly from the USA – represent pretty much every region North of South America! These two came by to discus their award winning film “Rob Roy,” an Official Selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2025 that tookhome three awards; the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Action-Thriller, the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Director – Short Film – Action/Thriller to Enrique A. Mendoza, and the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Screenplay – Short Film – Action/Thriller to Ren Olivieri.                                                                                                                                                                                                                    No wonder they like me! Each had been on the podcast before solo, Enrique on Episode 527. Enrique A. Mendoza “Fervor” and Ren on Episode 559. Ren Olivieri “The Trade” . Besides talking about how these two met at SOFF 2024, hit it off, watched each other's screenings and collaborated in time to submit “Rob Roy” for the next year's festival, they also wanted to talk about their new project, Fifty. Happy Monday! Dojin Kim’s animated short film “Where the Rain Stops” was an Official Selection at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival on 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Originality – Short Film – Animation. This is unusual, but I think it is appropriate to share Dojin's post-podcast recording with everyone. He wanted to express himself more clearly after our struggles with live translation. Here are Dojin's own words: Thank you very much for your kindness and patience during the podcast recording. I know the language barrier must have made things less smooth at times, and I truly appreciate how thoughtful and generous you were throughout the conversation. In particular, when I did not fully understand the nuance of a short question and asked again, you kindly took the time to explain it in more detail, which made it much easier for me to understand. I am very grateful for that. It is always a wonderful thing to share something I have made with other people. Because of my full-time job and financial limitations, I was not able to visit Los Angeles in person, but having my film screened at SOFF was still a very meaningful experience for me. It was something truly special, and I would like to thank you again for making that opportunity possible.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                As with the themes in Where the Rain Stops, I feel that our world is living under dark clouds. From the climate crisis to the existential questions about humanity raised by AI, this is a dark and turbulent time.                  And yet, in the middle of that, the fact that human beings can communicate through creative work, and that people across the ocean, from different countries and different backgrounds, can share the emotions of the age with one another, reminds me of the value of art. More than that, it seems to offer us an answer, even if not a perfectly clear one, to the question of what it means to be human.                                                                      I want to express my respect for the work and dedication it takes to run a film festival and create a space where this kind of communication can happen.                                                                                                  Through today's podcast conversation, I was reminded once again of the value of art and communication. Thank you again for making that possible. A Marvelous Monday to all you Listeners! John Schlag brought his film “Panes Taking” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2025 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film - Dance.                                                                                                      Little did I know that this beautifully artistic piece brings together the diverse interests of a throughly creative and technically proficient person.                                                                                                                    John has a long, distinguished career in visual effect that began with Terminator 2: Judgment Day and continued through films like Forrest Gump, The Matrix Reloaded and Watchmen.                                                  John also learned a love for dance while studying at Carnegie Mellon University that continues to this day, and that love inspires him to sit on the board of the Smuin Contemporary Ballet in San Francisco (https://www.smuinballet.org/) and to combine his artistic pursuits by making dance films. I do not have words for how much I respect a person such as John, who has accomplished much in his careers and yet never stops seeking to create new and original works.                                                                  Even the name of his production company, Infinovation Film, clearly states his personal desire to be infinitely innovative. Many do not know this, but I adore dance and dance films and even sit on the jury of a EDIFF, the Exeter Dance International Film Festival in the UK.                                                                                                    Between us, I am always envious of the beautiful dance films that EDIFF receives and John Schlag's “Panes Taking” is the rare Official Selection at SOFF or FI-LA that eases my jealousy of EDIFF. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Rob Neilson's film “The Word” was an official selection at both Film Invasion Los Angeles as well as Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024, which you might know is a rare feat. I should also mention that at FI- LA “The Word” took home the Grand Jury Awards for Best Short Film, Comedy and Best Cast Performance, while at SOFF it took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Short Film - Comedy. Clearly I'm a fan of Rob's work and I couldn't wait to see what type of films inspired him. Happy Monday, Folks! Previous to this podcast, my only interaction with Parker Croft was via email.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 He was super busy when his film “As Easy As Closing Your Eyes” screened at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024, leaving it up to writer and producer Aaron Golden to represent the film.                             It was great to have Aaron at the festival and he gave an excellent Q&A, but if you know me then you know that I was delighted that this podcast granted an opportunity to get to know Aaron's creative partner in that film, director, co-writer and producer Parker Croft. By the way, “As Easy As Closing Your Eyes” won several awards at SOFF 2024, but I will just mention this one, Best in Fest - Featurette.                                                                                                            Sure, I could list the rest, but who has time? This chat with Parker is a truly enjoyable one. I hope listening to it is half as fun as it was to have this conversation. Happy Friday, Everyone! Filmmaker Clarke Wolfe brought her short film “A Shining Example” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards; the Filmmakers Award, chosen by our jury that is entirely made up of alumni, gave Clarke and co-writer Dylan Guerra the award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and a jury of one gave the film what we call, “Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Don't come at me too hard for saying this, but this darkly comic tribute to The Shining is, for me, better than the original book or film because the perspective is fresh and authentic. Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Much to my chagrin, “A Shining Example” played in the theater where I was not moderating Q&A's, an unfortunate fact that kept me from praising Clarke's work in front of an audience.                                 Happily Clarke is among the first to hop onto the Discover Indie Film podcast after SOFF 2024, which made e feel a lot better that I was in the theater next door during her Q&A. A beautiful March Monday to you all! What I am about to type is the absolute truth. The first time I watched “Down Town,” the crime-comedy-adventure feature film from writer director Gavin Gaitan,                                                                                I said out loud, alone in front of the TV, “Holy f***ing sh*t.” And I probably said it three to four times in a row, because Gavin's film simply blew me away.                                                                                                                                                                     I wasn't alone! The selection jury for the Sherman Oaks Film Festival gave “Down Town” the Best In Fest award! In fact, at SOFF 2024, Gavin's film took home four awards: Best in Fest - Feature Film Grand Jury Award - Best Feature Film - Comedy Grand Jury Award - Best Director - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan Grand Jury Award - Best Screenplay - Feature Film - Gavin Gaitan By the way, I was extra excited that Gavin was among the first of the SOFF 2024 alumni to jump onto the podcast.                                                                                                                                                         I was moderating the Q&A's in theater 7 when “Down Town” was playing in theater 8, so that I was not able to moderate Gavin's Q&A and tell him all of the things that I admire about his film. That's what I love about the Discover Indie Film podcast; it gives me a second chance to have a conversation the filmmakers whose Q&A's I did not get to moderate. A Wonderful Wednesday to you all! Filmmaker Adam Linkenhelt should have been on this podcast a loooooong time ago. Why do I say that? Because not only did Adam have two films in the festivals that I run in 2024, way back in 2016 a film that he co-directed was in the first ever festival that our team presented when Film Invasion Los Angeles (FILA) debuted. Time for the list? In 2016, Adam's film “Passports” was at FILA. Then in 2024 his film “The Unreliables” was at FILA 2024, earning Adam and his co- writer Jen Robyn Jacobs the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Screenplay - Drama. And get this. Adam directed two films that were submitted to FILA's sister-festival, Sherman Oaks Film Festival, also in 2024. We had to pick one, even though both were great, but right now I will just give a shoutout to both “Rattled” and “A Close Encounter.” Not only does Adam always do great work, but he told me at FILA 2024 that he had accepted the role of festival runner at the Anchorage Film Festival in Alaska! I was delighted that he wanted to pick my brain a little bit for it and I could not have been happier to see the great things happening up in Anchorage while I was busy at SOFF. Needless to say, we spent more than a little time talking “festival running” in this podcast. Consider this a chance to see behind the festival curtain a little! @AdamLinkenhelt anchoragefilmfestival.org _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. If you listened to Tuesday's episode, you heard my excitement that I got to chat with accomplished filmmaker John Gray, once again. John is a very prolific filmmaker and to date I have seen no fewer than eight of his short films, including Household Demons, Exit Package, Extra Innings, The Third Defector, The Desecrated, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Overlook. We've had the privilege of presenting John's films in numerous festivals over the years, most recently The Unquiet Dead, which was featured at SOFF 2023.
