Jay McElroy was born and raised on a small farm in Cuba, AL, where he spent his childhood roaming the fields and woods surrounding his home. He attended Bass Memorial Academy in Lumberton, MS, graduating in 1984, and then pursued higher education at Southern Adventist University, where he earned his degree and married Stefanie in 1987. After college, he worked for two years before enrolling at the University of Alabama with Stefanie, where he earned an MBA alongside her. Following graduation, he moved back to Cuba, AL, with Stefanie, joining the family trucking business, where he remains today. Jay and Stefanie have two married sons, four grandchildren, and a fifth grandchild due soon. Growing up in the rural South laid the foundation for his love of the outdoors, which evolved into a passion for ultra-distance endurance events. He has completed three Ironman races, seven 100-mile races, and two 200-mile events, in addition to dozens of shorter-distance competitions. His passion for endurance sports began with a desire to improve his health and redirect the path he was on. In this conversation, Marty and Jay explore physical fitness as a core male strength. Jay emphasizes mental toughness over physical limits, sharing tales of frostbite and hallucinations, yet finding God's awe in nature. Despite a spinal fusion at 40, intestinal surgery, and melanoma, he thrives by staying active. Rest—8-8.5 hours nightly—and Sabbath renewal are vital, rooted in scriptures like Ecclesiastes 9 (“do it with all your might”). With a supportive wife, Jay urges men to set goals, push limits, and embrace trail running's spiritual rewards. His message: take the first step—whether a 5K or beyond—to unlock God-given potential, blending physical endurance with faith and resilience. Happy Valentine's Day Everyone! Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I have a new DiscoverIndieFilm Podcast for you! Nick Livanos wrote and directed the feature film “All the Wrong Ingredients” that was an official selection at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024, taking home the Grand Jury Award for Best Feature Film - Comedy. Nick is based in Tennessee and this podcast was our second Zoom, as we also did a Zoom for his FILA 2024 Q&A. Nick took a very interesting path into filmmaking and hones his skills as both a filmmaker and an Associate Professor at Southern Adventist University. I'm pretty sure that we offered each other guest rooms if either of us is ever in the other's home town. It might be from the fact that we all went through lockdown together, but at this point I think that I'm a good Zoom or two away from considering someone a friend! Ep 17 Founder Series Pt 2: A 20-Year Journey to Make Motion Preservation the New Standard in Spine, Scott Hodges, DO In Part 2 of our Founder Series, co-hosts Courtney Schutze and Brady Riesgraf sit down with fellowship-trained, orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Scott Hodges. Well known by several titles, including Medical Director at 3Spine, co-inventor of MOTUS, and leading advocate for motion preservation in spine surgery, Dr. Hodges shares his behind-the-scenes journey to bringing motion preservation to the forefront of spine care. His enthralling story includes the more than 20-year process of bringing a novel spine implant to market- from initial sketch drawings and early prototypes to clinical trials in South Africa and the U.S. Dr. Hodges' journey began at Southern Adventist University in his current hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, followed by medical school at Kansas City University, residency at Ohio University, and his fellowship in spine surgery at Loyola University Chicago School of Medicine. He went on to build a thriving surgical practice in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and it was here that the idea to improve upon the current standard of care for spine patients was formed and flourished. Dissatisfied with the available technologies and long-term patient outcomes in spine, Dr. Hodges dedicated his career to creating a solution. With an aim for creating a better treatment for spine surgery patients, Dr. Hodges partnered with Dr. Craig Humphreys to co-develop MOTUS, the first total joint replacement for the lumbar spine. Their goal was to create an implant that restored function in the lumbar spine and the entire kinetic chain, without sacrificing the body's natural motion. With this new endeavor, Dr. Hodges shifted his focus entirely to bringing these solutions to patients, navigating the complex world of medical device development, and leading surgeon education for this novel approach to spine care. In this episode, you'll learn: The road to innovation: What it takes to develop, refine, and clinically validate a motion-preserving device. What's next for spine surgery: How motion preservation, total joint replacement, facet replacements, and endoscopic techniques are shaping the future of spine care for patients struggling with chronic leg and/or back pain. The origins of MOTUS: How a simple concept became the first lumbar total joint replacement. Patient demand as a driver of care: How patient demand is driving new technologies to the forefront of surgical care. The importance of the kinetic chain: Why motion in all areas of the body is important and how the different joints in the body - knees, hips, ankles, and spine - work together to allow the body to properly function. Why training & education matter: How surgeon training and patient education play a pivotal role in the adoption and access of new technologies for spine care. This episode, recorded between the 3Spine headquarters in Chattanooga, TN and the world-renowned MERI Lab in Memphis, takes you inside the decades-long journey of bringing a new spine device to market, from the first clinical cases in South Africa to FDA trials in the U.S. As a pioneer, innovator, teacher, and leader, Dr. Hodges shares his compelling story of how data, surgeon training, and patient demand for motion preserving devices are driving the future of spine surgery. This episode is a must-watch for spine surgeons, medical innovators, and anyone interested in the future of spine surgery and the journey of bringing a new device to the market. Missed Part 1? Watch our interview with Dr. Craig Humphreys for the full Founder Series! This begins a three-episode conversation about the history, theology, and personal impact of purity culture. Although rooted in socioreligious mores that pre-date the term, purity culture emerged in the 1990s as an evangelical Christian cultural movement. It continues to influence Seventh-day Adventist understandings of dating and marriage, sexual expression and gender identity as well as female modesty and male headship. This limited series, “Sex, Love, and Purity Culture,” introduces our next-gen video podcast called Youth Group which seeks “to look without prejudice at all sides of a subject, to evaluate the merits of diverse views, and to foster intellectual and cultural growth.” That is also a quote from the founding mission statement written on the opening page of the inaugural issue of a journal named Spectrum over fifty years ago. That commitment to creating community through conversation continues today with:Kendra Arsenault, who studied International Development & African American Studies at UCLA and earned an MDiv in Professional Chaplaincy from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. She has created several popular podcasts and works at Stanford University Medical Center.Ari Bates studied film at Southern Adventist University and is the Creative Director of Aberration Film Studios in Portland, Oregon.Sofia Lindgren graduated in 2023 with a BA in Business Administration from Pacific Union College. Summary: Jonathan DeWeber has felt called many times over his life — the calling to ministry, to Southern Adventist University, to student mission work. But from a young age, Jonathan struggled with fear. He tried to follow the call but his confidence was attacked. Jonathan's double-mindedness and depression translated into a mental fogginess. The threat of burnout was REAL. Finally, in the middle of the pandemic, he found hope in the message of the Love Reality ministry. Jonathan received God's goodness in pieces but the last thing to click? You don't have to be afraid. God's promises are now the cornerstones of Jonathan's life — and he lives unafraid, fully trusting in what God says about him. Keywords: Calling / Fear / Identity Crisis / Student Missionary / Depression / Seminary / Idaho / Secret Place / FaithfulnessExternal Resources:Facebook Group: Love Reality | Gospel Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/3768526659826520

Sarah Cole joins me to discuss conflict and how we can make dealing with conflict a little less difficult. In Episode 16, I shared strategies for approaching and managing conflict based off the Thomas-Kilmann Model of Conflict Management. After listening to this episode, Sarah reached out to me and asked me several questions including, how can someone who is a hardcore accommodator learn to be more assertive? And what are the differences between a peacekeeper and a peace maker?Sarah and I exchanged a few messages and then I said, Hey! Would you come on the podcast and we can have a conversation about all this?!?She said a quick yes, before she “chickened out” and here we are!Sarah is studying Social Work at Southern Adventist University in Tennessee. My guest today is Dr. Lisa Clark Diller. Lisa is an historian of the early modern world and the chair of the History Department at Southern Adventist University. Lisa is passionate about teaching because she believes that education expands the heart and mind and helps people better become who they were created to be. It gives them the tools and perspectives and dispositions to be agents of change in their spheres of influence.Lisa is active in her community, a leader in her church, and enjoys traveling and many other outdoor activities.Lisa & first met in college, but got to know each other much better later in life when we lived in the same city. I have long quote Lisa when I talk about taking risks, pushing back against perfection, giving ourselves space to explore and be beginners. Lisa's encouragement of, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing poorly," has deeply impacted me and helped move me away from the paralyzing fear of perfection (or rather imperfection!). During our conversation, I also discover my word for 2022: Imperfect! May we each go forth boldly into the world with love, kindness, and with the embrace of imperfection!Connect with Lisa on LinkedIn.www.makelifelessdifficult.com

In our last episode, A Better Way - Part 1, we learned of the strong connection between Adventism and the Abolitionist movement. So it's no surprise that after the American Civil War, Adventist churches were some of the very first to integrate. But by the 1920s, the landscape of the Adventist church was extremely segregated. The General Conference had separate cafeterias for white and black employees; Black Adventist leadership was regularly denied seats at the table where important decisions were being made; and it wasn't until 1965 that Southern Adventist University officially desegregated - ten years after Brown vs. Board of Education, and five years after six-year-old Ruby Bridges marched with police protection into an all-white school, signaling the beginning of desegregation in public schools. How did we get from abolition to segregation? Guests: Dr. Calvin B. Rock, Claudia Allen, Pedrito Maynard-Reid, Kevin Burton, and Michael Campbell

Last season I (Pastor Vinnie) focused on mostly stand-alone topics. I had occasional guests yet, I was the main presenter. This season we are changing things up. Our focus for this full season is the historical Jesus; including his culture, people, political situation, and geographical footprint. I am joined by Jonathan Martin who is my new co-host for the season! It is all about seeking Jesus on deeper theological levels.
