You can't deny that sumo is made up of dynamic athletcism, hilarious falls, and sex appeal. This basho has it all! And so does this episode - pugs, dragonflies, the Mupper Movie, Dirty Dancing, and wishful injury recovery. Hey, there! For this month's guest interview, I am joined by one of my most admirable friends: Laura Gutiérrez. We share our respective tea talks (for Lala: red Hatsu tea in an "L" mug, and for me: Jasmine Blossom tea in a pink I love NY mug), and then I introduce my special guest. We discuss memories, habits, priorities, and philosophies in the rapid-fire questions. Firstly, we dive into leadership: what it means, advice, inspiring teams, and setting boundaries. Secondly, we go into doing things well: how Lau masters new activities, deals with laziness, adds "spice" to everything she does, and goes the extra mile. Thirdly, we get to understand Laura's general life views regarding peer pressure, limits, overwhelm, maintaining relationships, what people around her are doing wrong, and her life compass. Finally, Lau asks me her question, recommends a podcast and YouTube channel, and says goodbye. In Japan, the first dream you have in the New Year is called 初夢 "Hatsu-mu" and is said to predict the year ahead. There are certain things that are said to bring good luck when dreamed in the first dream, the most famous of which are 富士山 Fuji, 鷹 a hawk, and 茄子 an eggplant. Why is it good luck to dream of such things? Fuji and hawks seem to be good luck somehow, but why eggplants, you may wonder. There are many theories. Fuji appears in our dreams, we will have a prosperous year. Some people believe that Fuji is a symbol of "safety" and "immortality. The next two hawks are said to represent freedom of action as they soar high in the sky, and hawks are connected to "high" to suggest a year of high aspirations and high potential. The image of a hawk grasping its prey with its sharp talons also has the meaning of "seizing an opportunity. Finally, the three eggplants. Eggplants are said to be a specialty of 駿河 Suruga, the territory of I徳川家康 Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of the Edo period, and were an expensive vegetable in those days. It is said to be a valuable and fruitful year. Listen to the episode for details. And don't forget to follow this podcast. #Japanese #Nihongo #JapaneseStudy
Our conversation continues with Dr. Irene Hatsu, a professor and researcher at Ohio State in the field of human nutrition. Growing up in Ghana in West Africa, Dr. Hatsu's journey to being a professor at OSU is far from typical. Her experiences seeing impoverished children in orphanages in Ghana set her on a journey, not to climb the academic ladder for her own sake, but to use her intellectual giftedness to benefit those in need. A colleague in her department had this to say about her:“Dr. Hatsu radiates a strength that gives comfort and confidence to all who have the privilege of operating under her leadership. She helps others to achieve their goals, while humbly dismissing any credit she might receive for the vital role she plays. Most of all, she cares for those she works with on all levels - academic, emotional, social, and spiritual.”In part 2 of our interview with Dr. Hatsu, we ask her about what it's like to be a Christian working as a scientist, and we ask if there's been anything that has caused her to question her faith.-----A fellow faculty member in Human Nutrition said this about Dr. Hatsu:“Dr. Irene Hatsu is a Christian faculty who has a strong desire to see Christ glorified in her life and in her work. She truly cares about her students and her colleagues. She is a gifted mentor who has the ability to identify and cultivate her students' strengths and assist them in reaching their full potential. Irene's research focuses on improving the nutritional status of individuals in our society who are most vulnerable to food insecurity. In her research and in her relationships, Irene is a person who pursues truth and demonstrates love as she follows Jesus Christ.”A great resource for someone interested in the intersection of science and faith is Monopolizing Knowledge by Dr. Ian Hutchinson.-----The Walk is a production of The Thompson Institute, a program of Cru at Ohio StateProduced by Aaron Badenhop & Jordan BrowningEdited by Seth Costello & Lukas MorelandMusic by Jordan BrowningSpecial thanks to Dr. Irene Hatsu
