In this week's episode, we delve into a thought-provoking discussion with three pivotal personalities from the Missouri Equity Education Partnership, or MoEEP. We address the pressing need for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within Missouri's educational system. You may wonder, isn't educational equity a reality already? Our guests paint a contrasting picture. They share how students are alienated due to their minority, LGBTQ status, religious affiliation, and more. The ongoing trend of school privatization, compounded by the rise of government-funded vouchers, seems to be siphoning resources away from public schools, thereby deepening the issue. Interestingly, DEI, Critical Race Theory (CRT), and anti-trans fears are utilized by lawmakers in Missouri and across the nation to stir up a climate that undermines public schools. With billions of dollars earmarked for education in every state, private education companies are incentivized to fuel this animosity towards public education, with the ultimate goal of boosting their profits. Join us as we chat with Heather Fleming, MoEEP's founder and director, Amber Benge, the Co-Director, and Ken Susman, the special project team leader. Together, we'll dissect the current state of our public schools and the pivotal role that MoEEP plays in repairing the system. We'll delve into the pressing urgency to prevent a potential collapse of public education that could cause the U.S. to lag increasingly behind on the global stage.

Heather Fleming, founder of the Missouri Equity Education Partnership, or “MoEEP,” drops by to talk about topics related to equity in education. She started MoEEP as a grassroots non-profit organization that promotes an equitable community by supporting anti-bias and anti-racist approaches to education. MoEEP believes that diversity and equity education belong in our schools as much as math, science and language arts. MoEEP seeks to engage all students in active listening, belonging, cooperation and critical thinking. They believe in empowering teachers to teach - and students to learn - accurate history as well as gain skills needed to engage with people from different experiences and backgrounds. MoEEP pushes back on the narrative that conflates equity with Critical Race Theory. They point out that Critical Race Theory is not the same thing as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. They fight back against the opponents who attack any lessons and ideas they disagree with and instead push the notion of “school choice.” They fight back against any legislation that censors curriculum, threatens teacher and student free speech and removes local control. In short, they fight back against vilification of the teachers that attempt to include the concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion in their lessons.

Today I am joined by Heather Dawn (and no, we are not related), a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and the founder of Conscious Nutrition. Her mission is to help provide a solid foundation to teach others how to nourish themselves with their food. Heather is a recovering Type-A nutritionist seeking perfection, only to realize the body is brilliant, and we just have to learn how to listen. Our relationship with food can be quite complicated. Like any relationship, it can contain limiting beliefs, judgments, and habits that can hold us back from being the healthiest version of ourselves. Many of us have an emotional attachment to food, making it so difficult to restrict ourselves or follow deprivation diets. Taking a deeper look at our food habits can serve as a gateway into looking deeper within ourselves. Are we using food to numb out? Are we using food to fill a void? Are we using food because we have a scarcity mindset? Are we using food to avoid unresolved emotions? In order to use food to feel good about ourselves, we need to take a closer look at our eating habits, not just what we are putting in our bodies but also why. Heather and I shared a great conversation on food, nutrition, habits, tips, mindset, strategies, and so much more to help you redefine your relationship with food and inspire a healthier and happier you. This one is jam-packed with value, I promise!

Season 3, episode 9 Meet the founders of WY Lit, Heather Fleming and Kari Roden, who are passionate about helping kids with dyslexia. Heather says, “What we advocate for at WY Lit are practices that are really best to solidify foundational reading skills for all children but particularly important for children who struggle with reading.” She went on to say, “The bulk of teachers are willing to learn more and we need those teachers to be brave enough to say, 'I didn't learn this, and I would like to know more.' We need them to be vocal about that within their districts. We've had some fantastic administrators who have been very supportive of us. So, administrators can also be the voice of change." Heather and Kari were instrumental in the passing of Wyoming House Bill 297 related to K-3 reading screening and intervention. They have been contracted by the Wyoming Department of Education on several literacy projects and are excited to continue partnering with literacy stakeholders in Wyoming. What to say and what to ask for and to really demand because that's what it has come down to. You need to demand what these kids need. - Kari Roden

In 2014, Heather Fleming, Jessica Stago, and Natasha Hale launched a one-day event on the Navajo reservation to help the community learn about entrepreneurship. With the hope that at least five people would show up, the team was shocked to see more than 80 people attend their first event. Of course, they knew they were on to something. One of their funders encouraged them to transition from a one-day event to a full-scale organization that would help create a space for Native entrepreneurs and community members to access the infrastructure, expertise, and support they need to build small businesses, and thus, Change Labs was born. On this episode, Fleming walks us through how she moved from a one-day event to a full organization, how she's navigated feeling like an outsider, and why business is so critical to sparking social change.

In this week's podcast QCon chair Wesley Reisz talks to Heather Fleming, who is the VP of product and program management at GILT, where she is responsible for not only the customer-facing website, but also back office things from distribution to order processing. Why listen to this podcast: - GILT treats every person as an individual, with a skillset that is outside their responsibilities. - You should be able to be your authentic self wherever you are. - Google found creating a psychologically safe work environment was key to high performing teams. - You can kill a great team by taking away their autonomy and empowerment. - Great engineers that want to be managers are fearful of losing their skill, and great engineers that don't want to be managers are put in those roles and are terrible managers. Notes and links can be found on InfoQ: http://bit.ly/1U2Wgq9 1m 49s - One of the things that makes the culture at GILT so special is the "ingredients framework" that considers every person an individual, with a skillset that is outside what their title might say and what their role and responsibilities might be. 3m 29s - One of the team ingredients is called "motivator" - the ability to make sure that the team understands what they're working on, and more importantly the "why" and how it's driving business or customer value. 4m 35s - The relationship you have with your co-workers should be deeper than many of us are allowing them to be, because they are like your second family.
