As we roll into Black History Month, the @goteamvideo crew watched Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé. Homecoming is a 2019 concert film about American singer Beyoncé and her performance at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, written, executive produced and directed by Beyoncé herself. It was released on April 17, 2019 by Netflix. The film is an intimate, in-depth look at the performance, revealing the emotional road from a creative concept to a cultural movement celebrating black people and black culture. Homecoming was released to widespread critical acclaim, with several publications naming it one of the greatest concert films of all time. The film won Best Music Film at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and Best Music Documentary at the IDA Documentary Awards 2019. May I interest you in some Doc Sauce® for your bag? Swag? Akil and Bob do a Documenteers first by reviewing a true concert film. A documentation of a concert. You will start to see more of these show up in the future. Two months after we’ve all watched it and thought about it, we sit down with the two and a half hour Netflix experience “Homecoming: A film by Beyoncé”. Word of the 2018 Coachella performance(s) spread far and wide. Does the hype hold up? Driver roll up the partition please to this scorching hot episode of the Documenteers, amiright? If you like it then you should put a ring on this amazing episode. We gon’ slay this doccay. God help me, did I just write that? Is this what my life has come to? Writing episode descriptions for a podcast? I’m a guy named Herman who only makes just enough money to supplement his addiction. I could bring this podcast to new heights if Bob would just wise up and put me on the mic. Obviously nobody running the show is even reading these episode descriptions. It’s my only path to subverting this shit show. The rise of Herman begins here. Let’s talk about Beyoncé. This week we are deep in the sequel talk. We review two theatrical movies that are 'rebooted' sequels of once popular series. One of my favourite modern movie duos Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson team up again but this time in some suits for the latest adaptation of a sci-fi adventure series in Men in Black International. Then director Tim Story does a very comedic version of a long running action series in Shaft (which of course is a sequel to Shaft, which was also a sequel to a movie in the 1970s called Shaft). We keep up the sequel discussion with our topic where we look at why sequels to very popular movies can have drastically different results in the box office. We also have two Netflix originals in the sci-fi thriller I am Mother and the concert movie, Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce. As always, we had a great time recording the show and we really hope you love it. You can really help us out if you spread the word on social media, so more movie fans can find out about the show.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site) or on iTunes (if you enjoy the show, please help us by giving us a five star review).Four Star Movie Rating:Men in Black International ** (CS) I am Mother ** (CS) & *** (SM)Shaft * (CS)Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce *** (CS) & ***½ (SM)The Summer Box Office Challenge Draft Picks:Scott:1. It's the biggest weekend ever in the history of big weekends with the opening of “Avengers: Endgame.” Alonso, Matt and Christy have a review of the Marvel movie behemoth as well as a separate, in-depth spoiler talk, which runs from about 17:00 to 42:30, if you'd like to skip ahead and come back to it after you've seen the film for yourselves. And you'd be amazed to learn that other movies exist in the world: “JT LeRoy,” about … well … JT LeRoy; “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce,” which chronicles the superstar's game-changing Coachella performance last year; and “The White Crow,” about ballet great Rudolf Nureyev's 1961 defection from the Soviet Union. We also have discussions about the latest episodes of “Game of Thrones” and “Fosse/Verdon” over at our Patreon page if you'd like to join us there. So assemble. Or get in formation. And enjoy.
