In the latest Talking Strange, host Aaron Sagers (28 Days Haunted, Paranormal Caught on Camera) talks with executive producers Mark Duplass and Joshua Rofé about their new true crime/paranormal series Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal, debuting on Hulu with eight episodes on Sept. 24, 2024. More About Out There: Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal takes you inside eight true crime cases with shocking encounters with the paranormal world - through eyewitness accounts, expert interviews, and all-new investigations. In each case, amidst an agonizing search for answers, one rumor emerges from the pack: something inhuman is afoot. These in-depth investigations transport us to towns and cities across North America where we speak to individuals with eyewitness accounts and first-person details about the extraordinary, supernatural events that changed their lives forever. A six-year-old boy in the Smoky Mountains disappears forever after being snatched by a mysterious ape-like beast. A UFO crash in Long Island sparks an assassination attempt and illuminates a massive political conspiracy. An occult coven of Satanic witches is implicated in a decades-old New Jersey murder. Lonely ghosts in San Francisco's Chinatown threaten to steal the lives of the unmarried. In these stories and more, “Out There” tracks down fresh leads and uncovers new evidence amid a labyrinth of twists and turns. At the end of the road, the investigations unearth new truths – about the power of mythology, the allure of the paranormal, and the monsters among us. About the Guests: Joshua Rofé directed and executive produced the acclaimed Hulu series SASQUATCH, which premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Previously, he directed and executive produced the four-part Amazon Prime documentary series LORENA, which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and the Netflix Original Documentary BOB ROSS: Happy Accidents, Betrayal, and Greed. Mark Duplass is an award-winning actor, filmmaker and producer. As an actor, Mark has appeared in a wide range of film and television projects including the Apple+ series THE MORNING SHOW for which he received two Emmy nominations and a 2022 Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Mark was also one of the stars of the acclaimed HBO show TOGETHERNESS, a series he co-created with his brother Jay. Mark's many on-screen feature film credits include: THE PUFFY CHAIR, which he also co-wrote and co-directed, the indie-sensation HUMPDAY, the Gotham award-winning YOUR SISTER'S SISTER, the Oscar-winning ZERO DARK THIRTY, the contemporary classic sci-fi films THE ONE I LOVE and SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, BOMBSHELL opposite Charlize Theron, PADDLETON with Ray Romano and the CREEP horror franchise. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture podcast featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained. With his new drama Acidman now available on VOD in North America, filmmaker Alex Lehmann (Blue Jay, Paddleton, Meet Cute) salutes Nine Days, Edson Oda's metaphysical masterwork starring Winston Duke as a man who spends his afterlife auditioning souls to be born into the world. It sounds heavy, but it's light as air ... and just as essential. Your genial host Norm Wilner is all in on this one.
Maggie (Dianna Agron) arrives at a small, run-down house in the middle of nowhere to find it defaced by big orange letters reading ACIDMAN and learns that this is the locals' nickname for her reclusive father (Thomas Haden Church). After a decade apart, Maggie's offhand explanation for her visit is that she just wanted to check in on him, but this doesn't ring true considering how difficult he was to find. The two awkwardly want to get to know one another (Dad seems more comfortable talking through his dog Migo, or through Bobby, Maggie's childhood sock puppet friend), but are at the same time scared about what increasing familiarity will bring. After Dad reluctantly brings her on one of his nighttime outings, Maggie realizes that his obsession with UFOs and communicating with extraterrestrial beings has only intensified over the years. She struggles to understand him, his single-mindedness and deteriorating mental health, all the while with her own life-changing news to share. Letting their relationship ebb and flow through anger, silly jokes, tender gestures, and sadness, ACIDMAN is a beautiful meditation on the cyclical nature of parenthood and the longing for connection. Director Alex Lehman (Asperger's Are Us, Paddleton, Blue Jay) drops by to talk about his follow up to Blue Jay, how working with gifted actors Dianna Agron and Thomas Haden Church opened up the filmmaking into a more creative and character driven story. After Noirvember, we decided to lighten things up a bit with this week's theme: cancer comedies. In "Other People" (2016) Jesse Plemons kills it as a man who returns home to be with his dying mother. The film is worth a look because it has just the right mix of comedy and sadness. "Paddleton" (2019") is the story about two odd friends and how they cope after one of them becomes terminally ill. Ray Romano steals the show with his performance as a man who has to help his only friend to die. Both of these films are better than they should be.Next up, we celebrate our 100th show with the biggest movies the other guy hasn't seen. Adam (living in a hole?) has never seen "The Godfather" (1972) and Matt (communist?) has never watched "Rocky IV" (1985).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? 12/5/2021 This week, we discussed Under Siege (Andrew Davis, 1992), Inside Llewyn Davis (Joel & Ethan Coen, 2013), and Paddleton (Alex Lehmann, 2019). This week is about being willing to be pummeled and to accept regret. Then we go off menu for a little eye patch talk. We end Noir-vember with a couple good ones. Sam Fuller's classic noir, "Pick Up on South Street" (1953) stars Richard Widmark as a pick pocket who sticks his fingers in the wrong women's purse and ends up being pursued by NYC cops, feds and commies. The opening scene was as good as it gets and both loved the dialog Fuller seemingly created for the film. Show favorite Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Arrival) once again does not disappoint with "Prisoners" (2013). It's a brutal story about the kidnapping of two young girls and the aftermath. Not for everyone, but Villeneuve is one of the best directors working today and it's definitely worth viewing.Next, we lighten up after the darkness of Noir with a couple Netflix cancer comedies, Other People (2016) and Paddleton (2019).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? Film and TV writer, producer, director, musician, and actor Mark Duplass has made a name for himself in super-low-budget, naturalistic, independent projects, and forged a path for others to do the same. In this podcast’s 100th interview, he outlines many of the obstacles facing aspiring filmmakers and his techniques to overcome them: “I am very encouraging of embracing limits—and if you don’t have that many limits, self-imposing them.” Mark and Jay Duplass’ production company, Duplass Brothers Productions, has brought such critically acclaimed indies to the screen as “The Puffy Chair,” “Baghead,” “Safety Not Guaranteed,” “The One I Love,” “Creep,” and more recently, HBO’s “Room 104” and Netflix’s “Paddleton” and “Horse Girl.” Mark has also starred on “The League,” “Togetherness,” “Goliath,” and now, AppleTV+’s hit drama “The Morning Show” as Chip Black.
