In this episode we speak with Callum Linnane, a principal dancer with The Australian Ballet. Linnane, 29, has been dancing since he enrolled in tap classes as a seven year old in regional Victoria. Now he’s a star of the show - the kind of person who does magazine spreads and launches spring fashion campaigns. (His social media followers have described him as everything from Australia’s answer to Rudolf Nureyev, to a young David Bowie.) Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall talks to this son of a bricklayer about growing up in Ballarat, surviving (and thriving) on the grandest stage, and his upcoming titular role in Nijinsky, the latest offering from The Australian Ballet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Amantes? "I'm a Trailblazer As a student and teacher, I am educating others on the dangerous impact of shame guilt upon each of us. My” I'm Good” Docu-series further illustrates how changing the shame guilt system solves our mental health crisis. In 1964 as a registered nurse, I joined the University of Maryland open-heart surgical and nursing team. I modified my traditional nursing skills to meet the challenges of the new field of open-heart surgery. In 1966 I was a Nurse Entrepreneur. I helped establish one of the first kidney hemodialysis units in the United States at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. I assisted with research, teaching, and consulting to support other dialysis centers. Before the availability of the hepatitis vaccine, I contained a hepatitis epidemic at Thomas Jefferson Dialysis Unit and developed protocols for hepatitis management in hemodialysis to other units. I co-founded the AANNT American Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians in 1971 to standardize procedures for hemodialysis nursing. With sadness and the resistance of colleagues, I left traditional medicine in 1980 for holistic health to save my daughters' life and my own. I know firsthand the importance of healing and the spirit of living. I am blessed for extra years by overcoming heart disease, kidney dysfunction, brain traumas, rib fractures, and 30 years of migraine headaches. I had three miscarriages, but God gave me three beautiful daughters. Why I chose shame guilt for study? Shame and guilt reinforce each other to produce negative emotions such as anger, depression, addictions, etc. Shame guilt harms our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states. Lack of knowledge and their secrecy gives them power." "Fun Facts About Lois: I was a Registered Nurse at the Indy 500 in 1967 when Mario Andretti won. I saw the Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev leap from one side of the stage to the other at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. The audience stood in silent shock. Seconds later, the sound of thunder swept the theater with clapping. What a moment! At the airline's expense in 1970, I was helicoptered onto a yacht touring the Greek Islands because my flight was delayed reaching the boat loading dock. I doubt the airlines can have this type of customer service now. It was fun! In the second act of Jonny's chat with Dame Harriet Walter the conversation ranges over: age in the theatre; Harriet's extraordinary encounter with her childhood hero, Rudolf Nureyev; being rejected by drama schools and what made her carry on; what she does and doesn't want from a director; being robbed of time and power by other actors onstage; her search for a great comedy - and how the world expects too much from its mothers. In 1970, Natalia Makarova became the first female ballet star to defect to the West from Russia. The dancer claimed asylum during a UK tour, nine years after another Russian dancer, Rudolf Nureyev, had defected. Natalia later joined the American Ballet Theatre in New York. She wouldn't return to her home country for almost 20 years. Jane Wilkinson has been looking through the archive to discover the reasons behind her defection.(Photo: Natalia Makarova in New York, 1980. Credit: Brownie Harris/Corbis via Getty Images)
From 1956 through 1966, during which time he moved from London to Tokyo to New York, Ivan was married to the ballerina Ogawa Ayako, known in the society papers—by analogy with Jackie (Kennedy)—as Yakkie. In the realm of ballet, where other important Cold War battles were fought such as securing the defection of the Tatar dancer Rudolf Nureyev from the Soviet Union, Ayako became one of the first Japanese to work at the highest levels, then returned to Japan to spread her knowledge to a new generation here. Ultimately she played her part in proving Japan's ‘eligibility' for the honorary white status it ‘achieved' in the postwar, as well as the supposedly unlimited translation powers of Anglo-American capitalism. Wayne Sleep tells Michael Berkeley about the music that has inspired his career of nearly 60 years. Wayne Sleep is one of the most celebrated dancers of all time. He's performed more than fifty leading roles for the Royal Ballet, and had roles created for him by choreographers including Frederick Ashton, Ninette de Valois and Rudolf Nureyev. Equally at home on the stage of the Royal Opera house, performing musical theatre in the West End, choreographing, directing or teaching, he's known for his versatility, flawless technique, dramatic flair and humour. He made headlines around in the world in 1985 when he danced – to the total surprise of everyone there - with Diana, Princess of Wales, on the stage of the Royal Opera House. He tells Michael about the secrecy surrounding their rehearsals and the friendship between them that followed their performance. Wayne chooses the music that has shaped his long career including pieces by Mahler, Britten and Andrew Lloyd Webber. And, in a highly emotional moment, he hears for the first time since his childhood the voice of his adored mother on a record specially restored for this programme. Pete and Ben discuss the legacy, potency, and popularity of the Soviet Union's premiere cultural defector, and consider how he's objectified by the episode, whether Statler and Waldorf should sing along to the theme song, and how big Robin's hat should be. Hey Jam Fam! We are excited to share today's episode with you, featuring Phil LaDuca! We know you know the name for being the shoe maker to the stars, but there is so much more to his story. Thank you Phil for honesty and carving out time for us! Most recognize the name LaDuca as the pinnacle of dance shoes, but before shoes, there was Phil LaDuca, the performer, who went from classical ballet and contemporary dance, onto Broadway as a song and dance man, to ‘hoofing' with the biggest stars onstage, offstage and the big screen. Phil began his early stage career singing in rock bands in Chicago before switching gears to a dance career studying classical ballet with the premier ballet masters, Bentley Stone and Walter Camryn (actually performing in the ballet Romeo and Juliet with the legendary Rudolf Nureyev). jazz with Lou Conte founder of Hubbard Street Dance Company, and contemporary with the Joel Hall Dancers. On Broadway he appeared in “Brigadoon” for Agnes DeMille (alongside Jerry Mitchell), the “Pirates of Penzance” , and was the original understudy for the Gene Kelly role in “Singin' In the Rain” for Twyla Tharp. Phil toured in “Camelot” along with staring on tour in the lead role, of Bill Snipson in “Me and My Girl”. While in New York Phil first performed with American Dance Machine under the legendary Lee Theodore, working with such greats as Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Ona White, Danny Daniels, Patricia Birch, Anne Reinking, Wayne Cilento and Chita Rivera.Fulfilling another creative side, Phil created the international acclaimed LaDuca Shoes, crowned the “Shoemaker to the Shoes”; designing shoes for the likes of Katy Perry, Meryl Streep, Taylor Swift, Emma Thompson, Hugh Jackman, Catherine Zeta Jones, Lea Salonga, Pink, Shania Twain, Penelope Cruz, Selena Gomez , Christina Aguilera, Harry Connick Jr. and most of the shows on Broadway and tour; Moulin Rouge, The Music Man, Wicked, Book of Mormon, Frozen, Some Like It Hot, The Cher Musical, Bandstand, An American in Paris, Kinky Boots, Matilda, Pippin, Sister Act, Annie, Anastasia, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Aladdin; TV – Fosse/Verdon, Hairspray Live, So You Think You Can Dance, SMASH; Movies – The Eternals, The Prom, The Greatest Showman, La La Land, Chicago, Burlesque, NINE, Mamma Mia, Julie/Julia, Hail Caesar, working with such stars as Meryl Streep, Catherine Zeta Jones, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Arianna Grande, Antonio Banderas, Bette Midler, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Hudson, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Judith Dench, Glen Close, Reba McIntire, Sarah Paulson and Tatum Channing to name a few.Along with being the first, “Shoe commentator' for Miss America in 2015, Phil is most proud of being bestowed a Drama Desk Award 2017 for, “Proving that character comes from the ground up, the designer's innovative flexible dance ensures that hoofers on any stage remain on point”.Mr. LaDuca continues to design but still finds time to teach Master Theatre Jazz Dance classes. “I believe in not only giving back to this great community of dance, but I also feel obligated to ‘pass the baton' to future generations, all the knowledge I was gifted by the greats who taught and influenced me to achieve my goals and dreams”.Thank you for listening Jam Fam!

A couple of heavy hitters this week: ballet great Rudolf Nureyev and "the greatest talent in the history of the universe," (according to Scooter) Sir Elton John! Piggy gets inappropriate, The Chef gets homicidal, and, man, Sam the Eagle really hates hippies. Raise your hand if you are actually shocked by that. It's my absolute pleasure to bring the Balanced Ballerinas community a beautiful story rich in Australian culture and ballet royalty today! Mary Li was raised in Rockhampton, Queensland amongst the chaos of seven other siblings. Her parents sounded phenomenal, loving and down-to-earth. The perfect recipe for supportive parents of a budding young ballerina. From the humble beginnings of a little ballet studio run by Ms Hansen in Rocky to the Royal Ballet School in London and Christmas's spent at Covent Garden, Mary went on to tour all around the world world with London Festival Ballet before taking a position with Houston Ballet, that subsequently led to meeting the love of her life. Many of us know the story of Li Cunxin (current Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet), author of Mao's Last Dancer. But few of us know the story of Mary and the incredible sacrifice she made for love, for family and for their daughter Sophie. Mary's Last Dance is the title of this very story and hit bookshelves last week. Mary's memoir is an insight into her wonderful Australian childhood, dazzling career as a Principal dancer performing every lead role imaginable, touring with Rudolf Nureyev and being coached by Margot Fonteyn. As you'll hear, I was incredibly nervous going into this interview. I was interviewing Mary the day after her book came out and her publisher had sent me a digital copy a week prior. Amidst the concert season I currently find myself, I hurriedly consumed the pages to prepare for our interview. Whilst inhaling the pages of her book, I learned just how incredible Mary's career was. This made me nervous. I was about to interview ballet royalty. Then on the day of our interview Mary was watching me set up my podcast equipment when I asked if she'd done many interview yet for the book release to which she replied, "Yes! I've just finished an interview with Sarah Kanowski for ABC's Conversations!" I almost died. I was interviewing Mary right after one of Australia's top interviewers... no pressure! Nerves aside, I have to be honest. I absolutely LOVED this book. I knew I'd enjoy it, but I was expecting to absolutely love it. I didn't expect to feel as emotionally swept up by the pages as I did. Whilst the glitz and glamour of Mary's life as a professional ballerina is fascinating, I actually loved the whole heartedness of her Dad waking her up for rehearsals as a young girl, her Mum helping her purchase a Winter coat in preparation for a life in London and the references to 'tallie' beers, Hills Hoists and barbecued prawns shone through for me. Maybe it's the fact I turned thirty this year. Maybe it's the state of the world we currently live in. Maybe it's the trauma we're collectively feeling as a result of this world pandemic that's making me so nostalgic and sentimental for the small things in life. But Mary's story is another reminder about what's really important in life; family, friendship and love. A beautiful story. A beautiful reminder about how incredible this country I live in is. An extraordinary woman. After our interview I half expected Mary to quickly get up and go about her busy day, but instead she instantly turned the tables on me - asking questions about my own ballet journey, the podcast, our community and my ambitions. I'm sure you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you. It's the biggest weekend ever in the history of big weekends with the opening of “Avengers: Endgame.” Alonso, Matt and Christy have a review of the Marvel movie behemoth as well as a separate, in-depth spoiler talk, which runs from about 17:00 to 42:30, if you'd like to skip ahead and come back to it after you've seen the film for yourselves. And you'd be amazed to learn that other movies exist in the world: “JT LeRoy,” about … well … JT LeRoy; “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce,” which chronicles the superstar's game-changing Coachella performance last year; and “The White Crow,” about ballet great Rudolf Nureyev's 1961 defection from the Soviet Union.
