Welcome Back to the Record Report! As 2024 wraps up, join Ahmad and Vance as they dive into the most significant moments in hip-hop this year. From the explosive return of regional rap to unforgettable feuds and the rise of women in rap, this episode is your ultimate year-end recap. 2024 saw a powerful resurgence of regional rap. Atlanta stayed on top, with Latto and Future leading the charge, while LA's Kendrick Lamar and G Perico proved the West was still a force. New York artists like Cash Cobain brought fresh energy, Detroit continued its rise, and Florida artists like Bossman D Low and Lul Tyler added their unique flair. Texas saw Megan Thee Stallion dominate alongside breakout star Mexican OT, while Memphis' GloRilla carried the torch for Southern rap. TDE had a standout 2024, with Kendrick Lamar delivering another masterpiece and Doechii cementing her superstar status. SZA's chart dominance continued while Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul dropped highly anticipated albums. The celebration of Isaiah Rashad's Cilvia Demo anniversary added to TDE's impressive year. This year, women in rap set the standard. GloRilla and Rapsody delivered potential album-of-the-year contenders, while Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Flo Milli, and Latto kept the genre buzzing. Women in hip-hop shattered ceilings proved their staying power and redefined the game. 2024 will forever be remembered for the historic feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. This wasn't just a battle of diss tracks; it became a defining cultural moment that shifted the hip-hop landscape and sparked endless conversations. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at https://betterhelp.com/rorymal and get on your way to being your best self! It's 7 am FRIDAY, it's 95 degrees! Mal gets immediately to pressing Demaris about romantic rules, and he starts working through some more boundaries any woman of his can't cross. On a further well-deserved attack on women, Rory accuses Latto of gaslighting on her latest single, so we get into a lyric breakdown of toxic songs, including some of Rory's (18:11). We address Big Sean's alleged leak and the current state of his career, as well as whether awe believe Kanye is actually responsible for the leak (27:19). Speaking of Kanye, his wife is making the headlines again with her nudity (35:00). Schoolboy Q's Toronto show was cancelled, so the crew puts Mal's feet to the fire (40:00), which progresses into a (fair and peaceful, I promise) disagreement about whether Kendrick and Drake will go to each others cities on tour next year (44:37). Ariana Grande got Brandy and Monica to reunite for the remix to her Boy Is Mine track, and this leads to a debate regarding the three, + Mariah Carey - who is the better vocalist (56:47)? Speaking of nostalgia, Mal tries to tell us we are interpreting 'Love and Basketball' wrong (1:06:30). Trump's ear gauze trend ran through the RNC like Nelly's band-aid (1:12:12), and Amber Rose proves her dedication to the never return to Philly (can't relate, we'll be there next week - tickets available now) . We have voicemails! The first one is from a young man who just wanted to flex his sexual prowess under the guise of needing advice (1:25:44). We let him get his shit off, but became curious about his endeavors and get into a conversation about sex swings that leaves the entire team in tears (1:30:49). The second voicemail is from a dewd from Baltimore who had to chewwse between his current thing and his friend (1:39:16).For MORE Rory & Mal, make sure you subscribe to our Patreon community, for exclusive episodes, first access to tickets and merch sales, private live chats with the team, + more! https://www.patreon.com/newrorynmalFollow Rory: @ThisIsRoryFollow MAL: @MAL_ByTheWayFollow Demaris: @DemarisAGiscombeFollow Julian: @Julian__nicholas To watch the podcast on YouTube: https://bit.ly/NewRoryAndMALYouTube Don't forget to follow the podcast for free wherever you're listening or by using this link: https://bit.ly/NewRoryAndMAL Learn more about your ad choices. We begin the podcast talking about another podcast. Kelsey guest appeared on a show offering no new information on the Megan Thee Stallion fallout (2:30). This leads us to our own personal beef. Turns out Julian has to square up with an NBA player (12:45). This scenario leads to an interesting “podcast multiverse” where we see how we'd react if our peers were intimate with our significant other (21:15). As usual, the room is split on how to handle these hypotheticals. Demaris shares that men can't even get drunk anymore (add it to the list) (45:55) Then we expand our multiverse and bring in Vin Diesel & The Rock (48:38). We briefly talk about The Rock & Mark Whalberg running for President and the recent Supreme Court overturn (55:56). Meanwhile, outside of the country Usher dipped to Bali seemingly to clear his head / avoid the smoke (1:03:30). We give Schoolboy Q's album and review and discuss a couple other artists we're looking forward to hearing from (1:07:00). This leads to a larger conversation about the pressure Cardi B is under (1:11:16). It's time for voicemails . This triggers Rory into hating on Jason Kelce's love for his wife (1:25:40) and a childhood story of young Rory getting banned from a restaurant (1:39:39).
