"I don't live well in the box because the box is not made for entrepreneurs." In a world obsessed with digital efficiency and quick fixes, the real currency of a meaningful life remains independent thought, presence, and intentional effort. In this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times, Colleen Joyce, CEO of Lawyer.com, breaks down why community is the new competition and how proactive resilience drives real growth. From starting in a green, part-time role to rising to CEO, Colleen shares key lessons from her mentor Gerry Gorman on leading with heart, leaning into an unstructured life, and surrounding yourself with people who challenge you to build something bigger than yourself. 10 Memorable Quotes: "I don't live well in the box because the box is not made for entrepreneurs." "In the world, a lot of luck matters." "Community is the new competition." "We suffer more in imagination than in reality." "You can't connect the dots looking forward, but you can only connect the dots looking backwards." "I lead with love, and it's kind of weird to say that in a business setting, but I truly care." "I'd rather have a small piece of a big pie than a big piece of a small pie." "There's no value in what's been said. There's only value in what's been unsaid." "Wisdom can't just be taught. It must be earned by getting through hard times." "Progress over perfection."   10 Key Takeaways: Betting on the Non-Linear Path: How saying "yes" to a part-time opportunity without a traditional corporate roadmap opened the door to building an eight-figure powerhouse. Inquisitive Empathy and Radical Candor: Balancing deep care for team members with the accountability needed to deliver direct, honest performance feedback. Competition as Collaboration: Embracing aspirational competitors, learning from industry adversaries, and bringing competing voices together to elevate the entire ecosystem. The "Give Maxing" Philosophy: Countering isolation and hardship by gathering people, asking thoughtful questions, and actively extending gratitude. The Trap of Jevons Paradox: Recognizing that time saved by AI tools often gets swallowed by routine busyness unless leaders intentionally reallocate it toward human connection. Unlocking Untapped Potential: Pushing past comfortable boundaries to help team members tap into their unsaid thoughts and internal genius. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Accepting that leading through rapid industry changes requires living in the present while continuously learning as technology evolves. Surrendering Control to Foster Growth: Giving up micro-management to allow team members the freedom to make mistakes, learn, and step into leadership roles. The Power of Intentional Disconnection: Practicing small daily habits—like stepping away from digital devices—to remain fully present for family and community. Abundance Mindset vs. Scarcity: Rejecting the idea that success is a zero-sum game, choosing instead to build partnerships that lift all participants faster. About our Guest: Colleen Joyce is the CEO of Lawyer.com, the #1 U.S. lawyer matching service and online legal directory. Over the past decade, she has helped transform Lawyer.com from a simple concept into an eight-figure legal powerhouse, growing the company's revenue by more than 20% in 2024 alone. She rose to the CEO seat by way of Senior Vice President of Lawyer Services and then President, and today leads the strategy, technology, and partnerships that connect consumers with qualified attorneys across every practice area and jurisdiction in the country. Colleen is also the Co-Founder of the Lawyer Growth Summit, a national conference that brings attorneys, legal technologists, and industry thought leaders together to share the strategies driving real growth in modern law firms. She is a sought-after keynote speaker, mentor, and podcast host, and her leadership has been featured in Authority Magazine's "Female Disruptors" and "Leading with Heart" series and recognized by Marquis Who's Who. Before her legal-industry career, she served as Director of Marketing and Publicity at PopStar.com (a subsidiary of World Media Group), producing celebrity content for a global audience and covering red carpets, press junkets, and awards shows. Colleen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University of Illinois, where she graduated magna cum laude. She is based in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and describes herself first and foremost as a proud mama. Her guiding mantra: progress over perfection.

Look closer, and you'll find someone who lost everything first — and built something extraordinary from that experience.Darius Alexander Ross was born on July 16, 1965 in Laurel, Mississippi, and raised in Chicago. He attended Chicago State University, Wright College, Lake Forest College, and the International Academy of Design. He started his career in banking and went on to become a certified business broker, merger and acquisition intermediary, commercial real estate broker and appraiser, and commodities trader. He has served on multiple boards — including the New York City High School of Economics and Finance Business Advisory Board — and has been listed in Marquis Who's Who as a noteworthy commodities trader and philanthropist. Then there was the period when it all came apart. Darius has spoken openly about experiencing homelessness. Not just hardship — homelessness. That kind of loss strips away every story you've been telling yourself about who you are and what you're worth. For most people, it breaks them. For Darius, it became the raw material for something that would define his life's work. From that experience, he built the TPS Blueprint — Transforming Trauma into Triumph. At its core, the framework is simple: adversity is not something to survive, it's something to use. The pain of your worst experiences contains intelligence about who you are, what you can endure, and what you're capable of building. His "guerilla strategy" teaches individuals how to extract that intelligence and convert it into fuel for personal and professional growth. His HGDR model — Hustle, Grind, Define, and Refine — gives it structure and traction. The people Darius coaches are not drifting. They are entrepreneurs who've hit a wall. Leaders who've lost their edge. High-net-worth individuals who've built wealth but haven't built meaning. They know how to work. What they need is someone who can help them understand why their past trauma keeps showing up in their present performance — and what to do about it.Today, Darius works with Fortune 500 companies and high-net-worth individuals. He has authored multiple books, including Mastering the TPS Blueprint: Transforming Trauma into Triumph and Leadership DNA: Shaping a Thriving Business Culture. He has been a guest on top podcasts, economic panels, and business conferences. He plays scratch golf. Solving science denial is a priority for you as well? Alan McGowan, selected as 2019's Top Science and Technical Expert by the International Association of Top Professionals, also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who that same year. Now a Lecturer at The New School, he served first as chair of the Science, Technology, and Society Program (now called the Interdisciplinary Science Program) then as chair of the Environmental Studies Program. After graduating Yale University with an engineering degree, and a two-year stint at American Electric Power, a public utility, Mr. McGowan left to pursue graduate work in physics, then taught science and mathematics at private schools for ten years, winning the Teacher Recognition Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers in 1968. Following that, after serving for five years as Scientific Administrator of the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, an interdisciplinary environmental research, and training program at Washington University in St. Louis, he became president of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information (SIPI), which under his leadership became a major bridge between the scientific and journalist communities. In episode 471 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why Alan decided to go to Yale, what we can do to solve science denial, initiatives that we can take to reduce climate change, why nuclear power is part of our energy transition, why we are hearing so much scientific racism in this political election, what is the connection between mental health and social media usage, whether we should control and/or regulate Artificial Intelligence, and why college students should know who Franz Boas is. He is both an operational and subject matter point person in the strategic execution, curriculum development, facilitated training, and planning of Health equity coursework.  Having recently defended his dissertation focused on higher education workplace equity, his existing work involves a critical exploration of the theories of race and gender in the context of higher education and public administration policy and practice in those labor settings. Mr. Baker has designed and deployed initiatives to advance and create community-wide opportunities for the development of skills in combating bias and promoting belonging and the development of knowledge about differences, about the importance of cultural competence, and about the needs of uniquely diverse populations.   With over two decades of dedicated experience in education, Dr. Dramaine Freeman's rich and diverse background spans a broad spectrum of roles. These include substitute teaching, classroom instruction, tutoring, counseling, and administration. His educational journey started with a Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Computer Technology from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. However, his true passion was ignited by his desire to advocate for all students' aspirations, with a particular focus on empowering Black males. Dramaine firmly upholds the enduring value of continuous learning and has directed his studies into examining the profound impact of educational structures on minority students and school leadership. This commitment moved him to pursue advanced degrees, acquiring a Master's in Education, a Master's in Administration, an Educational Specialist license, and a doctoral degree from Appalachian State University, with the research focus of exploring the social perceptions of Black males in society and how those perceptions impact Black male leaders in K-12 spaces.   Nathaniel Smith is an ordained minister and lifelong educator recognized for his leadership across New York State, and by UNCF, NAACP, Marquis Who's Who and others.
