As some of you know, I attended the Columbines School of Botanical Studies back in 2011, so I am incredibly honored and excited to welcome the whole crew on the show this time around. We are joined by Howie Brounstein, Leah Kays, Alex Payne and Steven Yeager. And this year marks the 40th year of Howie teaching and creating the school. Quite the milestone, I'd say. Today's episode is Howie Brounstein's keynote from the 2019 Breitenbush Herbal Conference. I'm so grateful Howie recorded this and allowed HerbRally to publish this on the podcast. However, this was recorded on Howie's phone. So the audio quality isn't the greatest. Howie did take some time to clean up the sound a bit. It's definitely listenable and there are many gems and takeaways! I had the honor of being co-organizer of this event and was so thrilled that Howie gave the first keynote to kick off the weekend. This was right before Rising Appalachia took the stage! Howie was my first herbal mentor (along with Steven Yeager). He is the owner and lead instructor at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. If you're looking for an herbalism apprenticeship with a heavy focus on botany, wildcrafting, herbalism and anatomy and physiology, I can't recommend his school enough. Learn more about the Columbines School of Botanical Studies at BotanicalStudies.net Also be sure to give Howie a follow on Instagram @howiebrounstein and @columbinesschoolofbs He's always posting great herbal content! We were honored to have our good friend and owner of Sage Country Herbs, Shana Lipner Grover, join us in person last week for some filming. One of the videos we recorded was on an enchanting yet practical topic – working with smoke as medicine. With decades of experience, Shana illuminates this traditional art, inspiring us on the many ways smoke has been historically used as medicine and ultimately to consider making our own herbal smokes. This educational talk is packed with information from the history of smoking herbs to wellness benefits and precautions to choosing ingredients and formulating. Shana leaves us feeling empowered to explore and create our own herbal smokes and when to use alternatives. The corresponding video to this week's podcast will be released on our YouTube channel at a later date, please stay tuned. This podcast is a combination of two separate talks from a pre-recorded plant walk led by Shana Lipner Grover at Mount Pisgah in Eugene, Oregon. A talented clinical herbalist, field botanist, and nutrition educator, Shana introduces us to two plants abundant throughout the Pacific Northwest, stinging nettle and poison oak. Engaging and informative, Shana reviews the botany, habitat, safety, and uses of nettle and poison oak and teaches us that by paying close attention to these plants we can be in relationship with them and learn from them. Listen in as herbalist Dana Aronson talks all about the beautiful motherwort! Motherwort’s latin name, Leonurus cardiaca, is depicted from the Greek word leon (lion), ouros (tail), and cardiaca, giving meaning to the heart. This sheds light to the common name, Lion’s Heart. In Europe, the name “motherwort,” has a literal meaning of “mother-herb.” With both of these names, this gives a small peek into the medical properties of this plant we know as Motherwort. An herbal smoking blend may not sound like your cup of tea – and it isn’t! – but it’s still an effective method of working with medicinal plants. When smoked, herbs have rapid effects on the lungs and the central nervous system, including antimicrobial, astringent, relaxant, and nervine or anxiety-reducing activities. This traditional practice is still relevant today. But of course, some people need help to quit smoking, not reasons to start! And herbs can help here as well, by reducing cravings and addressing the original reasons one started smoking in the first place. They can also help one cut down on smoking tobacco or cannabis by enhancing the desirable effects of those plants and reducing their undesirable ones.In this episode we’ll talk about all these aspects of smoking, share some of our favorite plants to include in herbal smoking mixtures, and guide you through some practical considerations when trying this on your own.Herbs discussed include: mullein, lobelia, skullcap, evening primrose, vanilla, uva ursi, tobacco, cannabis, pedicularis, catnip, damiana, tulsi, mugwort, bittergrass.Mentioned in this episode:Medicinal smoke reduces airborne bacteria. The field of herbalism has changed considerably over the past thirty years. Once, aspiring herbalists had few mentors and essentially had to create the path into the herbal lifestyle on their own. Those hardy souls have become the teachers and guides modern herbalists have to thank for reclaiming herbalism as a real medicine for the people. Today, we’re talking with one of herbalism’s elders, Howie Brounstein, co-owner and primary instructor of Columbines School of Botanical Studies, about his path into herbalism and the changes he’s seen.
