This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we are celebrating our passion for plants in honor of Valentine's Day with the profoundly knowledgeable educator, author, “herbal matchmaker”, and Director of the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine, CoreyPine Shane (RH). Tune in as Thomas and CoreyPine explore how herbalist practitioners utilize matchmaking tools to recommend botanicals that align with a patient's unique health goals, as well as how nervines and adaptogens can help us adapt to external stressors we experience throughout our ever-changing and evolving world. Leaning on our plant partners through stressful events, such as the recent devastation and displacement caused by Hurricane Helene, is something CoreyPine is no stranger to. As a member of the Appalachian Herb Collective—a grassroots effort providing on-the-ground assistance to those directly affected by the catastrophe, CoreyPine understands the impact behind establishing connections with plants to help heal a community from the inside out. As always, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure and are honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Let's raise awareness for hormonal fluctuations in the lives of women that make us cyclical beings, but let's not normalize period pain and PMS, because for those we have effective and safe herbal remedies! Let's talk about Vitex (Agnus Castus), Shatavari, and Dong Quai as hormonal regulators, but also liver herbs to reduce the effects of toxic estrogen metabolites like milk thistle seeds and supplements like DIM and sulforaphane, and also really important, our gut microbiome/estrobolome, which we can improve by eating a fiber-rich diet and taking probiotics if necessary. For period cramps we have herbs to regulate blood and circulation, and to lower inflammation, like hawthorn berries and rosehips! And of course, calming herbs and nervines like chamomile, hops, valerian, and adaptogens to support our mood and stress response like Rhodiola and Ashwagandha. I enjoy making my own skin moisturizer out of tropical butters like shea butter, cacao and cupuaçu butter, melting those, and adding luxurious plant oils like Argan, Jojoba, and Seabuckthornfruit Oil for a creamy consistency. I don't have to add any preservatives or emulsifiers because I don't add water to those creams. Instead, I spray my face with Rose Water or Witch Hazel Hydrolate before applying the face balm for added moisture and a toning, pore-refining effect. Lavender and Cistus grow abundantly around me, so I use them to make my own herbal-infused oils, which I use directly as a body oil, or in my creams. Some oils have strong medicinal properties, you don't even have to infuse herbs into them, like Andiroba and Copaiba Oil from Brazil, and many others. Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982. He studied botany at the University of Minnesota, receiving his Master of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine. An international lecturer, he has authored ten books on herbal medicine, including The Book of Herbal Medicine (North Atlantic Books, 2017) and The Earthwise Herbal Repertory (North Atlantic Books, 2016). In this episode Matthew shares with us early insights regarding the natural world and his realization that "nature is alive". An expert herbalist, he walks us through how he works with clients from intake through diagnostic approach and herbal remedy. Matthew shares how as his practice has matured over the decades he has learned to simply “follow the energy”. We discuss the homeopathic principle of treating like with like and what the extracellular matrix is and its role in whole organism communication. He describes the role of constitution in holistic health and gives examples from Ayurveda's dosha system, Native American animal likenesses, and the modern “body types” idea of endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph. We examine the healing mechanism of adaptogenic mushrooms like Reishi and Chaga and how they fit into a herbalist framework. He also recommends certain sustainable tonic herbs that can have long term benefits and explains the concept of “the green power” of Viriditas, espoused by the middle-age mystic Saint Hildegard. Matthew discusses the growing challenges in people's wellness in a complex era of experimentation, sharing his vision of our relationship with the planet and Mother Nature in which our hearts are aligned with the love of the Earth. Matthew has helped tens of thousands of clients over the years, many with difficult health problems, and has maintained a practice of traditional Western herbalism during a period when many others have turned to the exotic traditions of India or China. While Matthew believes in the virtue of other healing modalities, he has always been inspired to learn, preserve, and practice the tradition of herbal medicine descending to us from our European, Anglo-American, and Native American heritage. He is a registered member of the American Herbalists Guild and teaches online through the Matthew Wood Institute of Herbalism.www.matthewwoodinstituteofherbalism.comLiked what you heard? The herbs I take every day vary with time and the seasons but these are some of the herbs that I'm currently taking every day: medicinal Mushrooms like Cordyceps, Reishi and Lion's Mane, Dong Quai and He Shou Wu, two pretty amazing herbs from Traditional Chinese Medicine, Guggul, Aloe gel, Ashwagandha and Nutmeg (widely used in Ayurveda), and now in summer for its refreshing properties: Hibiscus cold-infusions with green Stevia leaf! Not to forget my digestive herbs, Fennel, Anise, Flaxseed, and Triphala or Haritaki! I will explain why and how I take these herbs and hopefully inspire you to take your herbs on a daily basis! Herbs can help resolve the underlying issue of a health condition and work towards a sustainable, long-term improvement of health. But they can also control symptoms for short-term relief in effective ways and with way fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals. Using herbs to manage symptoms can help to stop the downward spiral of health problems, but it should ideally be combined with herbs that address the actual root cause of the problem for a long-term cure. For example, a person with high blood pressure could use herbal diuretics to lower blood pressure, but this would just suppress a symptom, similar to a drug (but with fewer side effects). Ideally, this approach would be combined with herbs and foods that actually repair and strengthen the cardiovascular system, for example, hawthorn berries and garlic. Listen to the episode for more examples, and how I treated my intense neck pain last week with Lobelia tincture! For more detailed info about the root cause of many chronic ailments and how herbs can help address them, you might consider joining my classes!
