Lindsay Klaunig (she/her) is the farmer and owner of Trouvaille Farm in Athens, Ohio. She raises grass-fed beef and goats on pasture, heirloom crops on the ridge tops, and makes artisan chocolate and other treats in their farm kitchen. She is also a seed producer, growing heirloom vegetable seeds that are sold through small regional seed companies. Previously, Lindsay worked as a specialty cheesemaker on a small-scale dairy farm in the early days of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). It was during this time that Lindsay experienced a federal site inspection.In this episode, Lindsay is interviewed by her longtime friend Isabel. The two discuss how food safety enforcement has changed over the years, specifically describing what the situation was like before FSMA and how FSMA changed things in many ways for the better. Lindsay opens up about the FDA audit that she went through, sharing powerful tips for balancing out the power dynamic with regulators and offering wise insights about how and why communication and relationship building have been critical to her resilience.As Linday says to Isabel, “growing food is the most important thing you could do for a living, but if you're paying attention you'll also see that it's fraught, it's risky, and opens you up to a world of divisive opinions, clashes in values, and constantly changing rules and changing guidance from the regulators…” and yet she keeps choosing to do it, as perhaps you keeping choosing to do as well. Récemment encore, le gouverneur de la Banque nationale, qui est censé donc être la plus haute autorité financière du pays, a reconnu que les banques belges avaient encore une marge de manœuvre pour augmenter le rendement des comptes d'épargne. Les quelques chroniques que j'ai pu consacrer aux banques belges ont parfois suscité des réactions négatives, souvent, pour estimer que les banques offrent des services encore plus lamentables que l'administration et ne méritent pas donc les propos nuancés que j'ai pu tenir à certains moments. Récemment, j'expliquais que le succès du bon État auprès des épargnants belges avait un prix et ce prix serait payé d'une manière ou d'une autre par les épargnants. Et pour appuyer cette démonstration, et celle des observateurs avisés, j'ai pointé du doigt le fait qu'il y a quelques jours à peine, la banque KBC avait décidé d'augmenter ses frais bancaires, ce qui montrait bien, selon moi, que nous étions donc dans une histoire du type arroseur arrosé. Les banques belges ont dû se résoudre à augmenter le rendement de leurs comptes d'épargne suite à la pression du ministre des Finances, sous peine de voir encore une partie de leurs épargnes partir vers un deuxième bon état. Elles se rattrapent donc sur les frais bancaires. Ce problème des frais bancaires ne joue pas seulement pour les comptes d'épargne, il joue aussi négativement sur les produits de placement. Blake Harris, CSCP, is a specialist in standards and process enhancement, digital solution development, and implementation, with more than a decade of experience in supply chain-related functions within the private sector and at non-governmental organizations (NGOs). He places high value on tackling complex issues to create efficient and uncomplicated solutions. As the Technical Director at the Institute of Food Technologists' Global Food Traceability Center (IFT's GFTC), his focus centers on enhancing data digitization in food systems, which involves collaborative efforts with a diverse range of stakeholders from industry, government, and NGO sectors. Alison Grantham, Ph.D., is a consultant who brings a rigorous, practical approach to her work with public and private sector organizations to improve the food system. Alison focuses on helping her clients develop data-driven tools and programs to define and achieve goals to enhance food and agriculture. She has worked closely with IFT's Global Food Traceability Center since 2019, developing the Global Dialogue in Seafood Traceability (GDST) standards, among other traceability initiatives. Prior to consulting, she led food systems research and development, and then food procurement, at an $800-million revenue e-commerce food company. Previously, she led Penn State Extension's beginning farmer training program and directed research at the Rodale Institute. Alison currently serves on the Rodale Institute's Board of Directors and the National Academy of Sciences' Committee to advise the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the body that oversees climate and other global change research across the 14 federal agencies. In this weeks episode of The Produce Industry Podcast w/ Patrick Kelly we chat with Liz Sertl of GS1 US. Some of the most common standards you may be familiar with is the Global Trade Item Number, the UPC barcode, the GS1 128 barcode (this is what growers/packers use when shipping cases of product) and the Global Location Number among others. Today, we here from Liz Sertl the Senior Director, Community Engagement, at GS1 US, the not-for-profit information standards organization, and has more than 20 years of experience in the CPG industry. Liz facilitates collaboration best practices and guidelines that help companies improve product traceability and supply chain visibility through the adoption of GS1 Standards. She also spent more than a decade with Anheuser-Busch in e-business solutions and packaging, where she spearheaded the company's adoption of GS1 Standards for improved supply chain efficiency and trading partner relationships.
