Almost every herbalist I've interviewed seems to mention it, right back to my very first episode interviewing Missy Rohs of the Arctos School of Herbal & Botanical Studies. Missy loves dandelions! This conversation starts with a central theme that is close to both Stephen and Jai Dev's heart...the mystic legacy of the Grateful Dead! From there, the conversation winds its way through the Costa Rican jungle to the interrelatedness of all things.    You may have seen Stephen's groundbreaking work featured in the popular new Netflix Original, 'Down To Earth with Zac Efron'. Stephen's passion for life, and for his work is totally infectious, and you'll feel that in this episode. Seeking more sustainable ways to live our daily lives without compromising quality of life, he has brought his visions to fruition.  With over decades of experience working on the creation of thriving ecological communities, beginning with The Punta Mona Center for Regenerative Design and Botanical Studies in Costa Rica, Stephen has become a world leader in tropical permaculture. Host Kash Khan interviews ethnobotanist Stephen Brooks, the co-founder and co-producer of the annual Envision Festival in Costa Rica. He’s also founder of Punta Mona Center for Regenerative Design and Botanical Studies. He has started several ecological communities in Costa Rica and is launching the Ecoversity.   In this podcast, Stephen talks about the influence the design of his childhood neighborhood had on him at a young age, the importance of permaculture on his life's work, and the ecological neighborhoods he is creating in Costa Rica. The Educate Inspire Change Takeaway:   “How can we be able to sleep at night knowing that we’re supporting industries that are so destructive and sad?”   “Permaculture really is the empowerment and the confidence and the toolkit to realize wait a minute, we have a say. We can do things differently. We can become resilient.”   2:40: Stephen talks about his childhood and how the physical design of his neighborhood fostered community.   4:30: Stephen shares the memory of the first time he visited Costa Rica and witnessing a playground full of indegenous children get sprayed by Chiquita Banana crop duster, and how this experience “jolted” him awake on an environmental and social level.   12:28: Stephen says that Punta Mona taught the first permaculture classes in Costa Rica and expands on the meaning of the word, and that it’s not an agricultural system but an ecological design philosophy.   16:20: Kash asks Stephen if he sees what he is doing happening anywhere else in the world, and Stephen shares an “epic story” that a friend told him that gives him faith that this is happening all over.    19:50: Stephen describes his experience with psychedelics and how they have helped him grow and engage with the world around him, and his worry that people can overuse psychedelics before processing their experiences.   25:40: Stephen explains the ecological neighborhoods he has been building in Costa Rica and his efforts to merge agriculture, education, community design, and events into 1,000 hectares of space at a time through radically reforesting and regenerating the land.   33:31: Stephen talks about the importance of training people to recreate communities and break free from current societal structures, and how permaculture teaches us to become intentional and efficient, which helps individuals redesign aspects of reality.  List of Resources -https://www.puntamona.org - Punta Mona -https://www.ecoversity.org - Ecoversity  -https://www.envisionfestival.com - Envision Festival -https://maps.org - Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) -https://www.instagram.com/puntamona/ - Punta Mona Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/envisionfestival/ - Envision Festival Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/alegriavillage/  - Alegria Village Instagram Guest Contact Info -https://www.facebook.com/Puntamona - Facebook -https://www.instagram.com/stephenrbrooks/?hl=en - Instagram  Sponsors: EcoLife Supplements  This podcast is proudly supported by EcoLife Supplements, Rythmia Life Advancement Center and our very own Psychedelic Documentary series PANTERA   Whilst in Costa Rica last year I came across a guy by the name of Anthony Walsh who handed me a bottle of hemp extract CBD oil and after just taking a few drops I was sold. Welcome to our first episode of The Herbalist's Path where we're on a mission to inspire a movement where there's an herbalist in every home, again! In today's episode we have a chat with Missy Rohs, herbalist, activist, teacher, and Cofounder of The Arctos School of Botanical of Herbal & Botanicals Studies. We take a deep dive into her Herbalist's Path where she first got introduced to herbalism through reading Punk Scenes. She joined the Black Cross Health Collective where she first started learning about how to administer first aid in activism situations. She found that she was surrounded by a group of ER nurses, massage therapists, herbalists, nurse practitioners and other health care practitioners, and she needed to learn more about health. She began taking some classes from some of the other Black Cross Health Collective members such as Colette Gardiner, and Krista Olson.A bit later a new partner got her interested in gardening and took her on weekly hikes. She learned about how you can walk down a path in the forest, and get to know the plants, and how to use them. These plants quickly became her friends! She later took the leap to learn more and went down south to learn from Michael Moore and Donna Chesner. She talks about how you become an herbalist when You use plants for their medicinal properties. Even if it means you're just using ginger when you're sick, or peppermint for an upset stomach.Lately she's been loving listening to Julie James of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, and her Monday morning classes that are available live on Facebook, 9 am PST. One of my teachers Lydia Barthalow, and now at her own school Arctos School of Botanical Studies, she has been able to add her own guest teachers to the list. Her first tincture she ever made was an echinacea tincture she made in college. Garth Caul taught a class on how to make a tincture with fresh echinacea tincture, and she was lucky enough to be in the dorm where the tincture was steeping. She ended up with a ½ gallon jar of echinacea tincture in the end! Bonus! She talks about how echinacea can boost your immunity and help your white blood cells fight off illness. If you're a beginning herbalist, Missy recommend trying to work with one herb at a time so you can get to know and feel that plant and how it works for you personally.  She talks about trying a nettles infused vinegar, a hawthorn tincture, or even a plantain poultice. She fell in love with her Pojar & McKinnon Plant ID book, and Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Virabtan Health, or The Family Herbal,  Also she loves the Rosale De La Foret's Alchemy for Herbs. The one herb Missy wishes everyone knew about would be dandelion because it grows almost everywhere on this continent. Laura utilises plants as an integral part of her healing touch and empowers her clients to make their own medicine. The ladies explore the intuitive nature of claiming one's health and the wisdom of plants and their healing properties. During this deeply gentle and spiritual chat, Tahnee and Laura explore what it is to tune into yourself, nourish and nurture your body and care for your mind. You might even hear cameo roles from both ladies children ;P!   The ladies dive deep into: How instinct and intuition need to be trusted when working with tonic herbs and life, in general How we often can lose our way a little, but essentially, this is just a transition period into becoming more strong in your own self - we call it sovereignty Who are the ancient Strega (the traditional Italian healer) The commonalities between healing practices across the globe, including the Mayans, the Chinese How nature and animals can provide the most amazing cues for us to follow via observation and intuition The dynamic dance of a herbs constituents is where the magic is - not the individual constituents How powerful the act of prayer is to come in to a state of receiving How connected uterine massage is to a spiritual clearing How the womb has the tendency to store great emotions How vaginal steaming can be very beneficial for women, the volatile oils of the plant will be drawn and absorbed straight into the tissue The 101 on vaginal steaming  Some tips to balance motherhood and self-care Why self-love can be tricky! Sharing your women's business with your kids and family can provide great support and connection Men too, have their own cycles; self care is just as important for blokes too How we each are in charge of our own body, let go of any fear    Who Is Laura Clemmons? Laura Elvira Clemmons is a certified herbalist and graduate of the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies. She studied under Dr. Gu Ding in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Shen Nong Center in Philadelphia, PA, and Mayan Traditional Healing Practices and Uterine Care with Ms. Beatrice Waight, Belize, Ann Drucker, Boulder, CO and Rosita Arvigo, Belize. She held an apprenticeship with Linda White Dove in herbal medicine; an apprenticeship with Claudia Rosewolf in traditional North American indigenous healing practices; and an apprenticeship with Pei Fen Yan in Chinese Medicine in Boulder, Colorado.  She believes that all medical modalities are lifelong learning processes and that the more education one has increases the tools in one’s tool box. Along with a finely tuned sense of intuition she combines these healing techniques to create a healing protocol for her clients. Laura comes from a lineage of Italian stregas, or healers, and strives to maintain her ties to that tradition in her practice. She named her business, Strega Gardens, after that lineage as a way in which to honor and embody the work of her ancestors. She has practiced for over 15 years and prefers to grow or wildcraft most of the herbs used, as well as make her own tinctures, tea blends, glycerites, oils, and any other concoctions that are needed. Laura concentrates on female reproductive health.  Her work attends to physical, psychological and spiritual issues, being that these systems are integrated and inseparable.  Laura believes that caring for the reproductive system is one of the most important things that we can do, being that it is literally the gateway through which spirits are drawn from the ethers into this world.  She feels that learning to accept and love oneself is a critical aspect of the healing path, and that paying attention to the subtle messages the body sends is a crucial part of supporting the body's natural dance back into balance.  To do this, she feels we must take responsibility for our bodies and our health, and as a result we will find the healing we seek by bringing consciousness to our everyday thoughts, words and actions. Ultimately, she feels her work is to help women to discover the medicine within and does so through her practice as well as the classes and workshops she teaches. Today we'll hear from herbalist Nicole Gagliano as she discusses the herbal CSA directory that she is creating. What an amazing resource!   When she started her herbal CSA in 2013 there weren't many of them available. Now there are so many! She feels like this directory will be helpful to folks trying to find an herbal CSA in their area. And hopefully this will also encourage the use of locally grown herbs in communities.  Please share this episode with anyone you think would like to be on the list! If you would like to be included please contact her with these details: 1. Your name 2. Your CSA's name 3. your CSA website 4. your state  5. If you would like to write a brief description of your herbal CSA's offerings she would be happy to include this info with your listing and link to your website! Nicole Gagliano is a clinical herbalist, who studied at The Northwest School for Botanical Studies with Christa Sinadinos. On today's episode I narrate Mel Kasting's devil's club monograph.  Here's a sampling from her monograph which you can find here: www.herbrally.com/monographs/devils-club If we parse this striking plant’s latin name into three segments, we find ‘opolo’ meaning armored, ‘panax’ meaning heal-all, and ‘horridus’ meaning to stand on end, fiercely. So this plant literally means fiercely armored heal-all; an apt description. The first time I saw Devil’s club, I was on a field trip with the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. We had been hiking along an incline and down below, in the moist bellows where two hills met, stood a large patch quietly looming over the smaller ground cover plants. I remember feeling awed by its prehistoric appearance. And a little timid, like I was about to meet someone I have looked up to for years. Talk about presence. For more monographs: www.herbrally.com/monographs You can visit Mel online at: eclecticschoolofherbalmedicine.com/mel-kasting Let us know what you thought of the episode! We discuss her book "Beyond the War on Invasive Species" and what a new paradigm of land management for novel ecosystems in a changing climate looks like. Novel ecosystems are defined as "human-built, modified, or engineered niches of the Anthropocene. They exist in places that have been altered in structure and function by human agency." This means ecosystems that are functioning and have structure, but include non-native species and new combinations of species not seen before. This is especially relevant in a world of climate change and species dislocation, migration, and extinction. Tao has a vision of where we are and where we're headed, which she outlines in this podcast. Tao's Links: www.resiliencepermaculture.com http://www.chelseagreen.com/beyond-the-war-on-invasive-species http://www.aprovecho.net/ Tao Orion biography: Tao Orion is a permaculture designer, teacher, homesteader, and mother living in the southern Willamette Valley of Oregon. She teaches permaculture design at Oregon State University and at Aprovecho, a 40-acre nonprofit sustainable-living educational organization. Tao consults on holistic farm, forest, and restoration planning through Resilience Permaculture Design, LLC. She holds a degree in agroecology and sustainable agriculture from UC Santa Cruz, and her interest in restoration was piqued when studying botany, wildcrafting, and herbalism at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies in Eugene, Oregon. She has a keen interest in integrating the disciplines of organic agriculture, sustainable land-use planning, ethnobotany, and ecosystem restoration in order to create beneficial social, economic, and ecological outcomes.
