What’s In This Episode: Do you have a mentor in your life? Maybe it’s an advisor, a colleague, or a friend. If you do, you’re ahead of the curve. For most entrepreneurs, we have a hard time finding folks that can support us. That’s why Jill rehashes her experience working with a mentor. She never ever ever thought she’d be the person who’d have anything to say about mentors, and she wants you to know how she learned that mindful collaborations with supportive people are invaluable to anyone building a business. Jill Salzman turns the mundane into inspiration and transforms the impossible into the achievable. Through defying expectations and breaking the rules, she succeeds in inspiring entrepreneurs to figure out what works for them by using meaningful action to create positive results. Jill is the author of The Best Business Book In The World* (according to my mom) and the Amazon best-seller, Found It: A Field Guide for Mom Entrepreneurs. She’s shared the speaker stage with Richard Branson, Sheryl Sandberg, Daymond John, Marilu Henner, and Desmond Tutu among others, and professed her love of Eddie Vedder in her TEDx talk on 11/11/11. She hosts the top-rated entertaining business podcast, Why Are We Shouting?, a question she asks herself daily. CNNMoney calls her a “mommy mogul.” MSN Live says she’s a “Cool Mom Entrepreneur We Love.” Forbes rated her a Top 100 Champion Small Business Influencer and voted The Founding Moms one of the Top 10 Websites For Entrepreneurs. When she's not speaking to audiences in patterned leggings or podcasting from her basement, she fruitlessly tries to convince her daughters that cassette tapes actually existed.

Heads up: We normally don’t censor ourselves on the show, but we do talk about a very mature podcast a bit in the beginning. If you want to skip all that, we finish talking about it by the 18:00-minute mark. It’s a Pearl-Clutcher! We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the CDC website guidelines for information or any questions you may have. Even though John and Emily are both naturally homebodies, even they are getting a little restless when it comes to being told to Stay Home. And that leads to some stress eating, unfortunately. But we’re figuring things out as we go along, as per usual. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can talk to us and other Weighters while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook. We record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 We are not doctors. Please talk to your doctor before trying any new diet or exercise routine. We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email hatetoweight@gmail.com. In This Episode: Do you also sing along to our theme song? We do today! What do you think? Do you like the humor and the memes about Quarantine and COVID-19? John finds himself very undisciplined right now and running amok, but at least he’s aware! Our food planning skills are being tested heavily! Especially when it comes to buying enough to eat and also store. We’re all going to forgive John for not stepping on the scale this week because the batteries were dead. Who’s the mean person in your life? Is it you? But John has decided to get some sunshine and fresh air. (Psst: I talked to him later that day and it was a good experience.) Have you heard about Dying for Sex? What do you think? We’re also looking for distractions — something that has nothing to do with current events. Everyone! Big news! Julie Andrews is OK! (There was nothing wrong with her, but Emily worries if she doesn’t get a Julie Andrews update every so often.) Emily is pulling back and taking a look at her business and how it fits into what’s going on. She also is turning off the phone during the day or putting Do Not Disturb on her phone. Be aware of the Scarcity Mentality that many of us are in. This raises our stress and many of us hold onto weight when our stress is up. Thank goodness for yoga, mindfulness and making plans you look forward to. Want to lure Emily out of her house? Offer her food! If you’re not in the mood for a downer, skip ahead to John (at about 18:55) Emily gets some heavy news about her family and it’s a big eating trigger. Is it so much to ask that people wait to give us bad news when we’re in our eating windows? Sorry dog people, Emily is not a fan of the yip-yips. Emily realizes she doesn’t have any of her old coping mechanisms she used to use — overeating, smoking, and drinking. Emily is reading a new book about learning to be mindful of emotions and how they affect you. Emotions can make us feel heavier than the scale lets on. John absolutely lightens the mood! IN THIS EPISODE: Do you feel stuck in your life professionally or personally? Would you like to get “unstuck”? On the show today my guest is Laura Gassner Otting, the author of Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life. Laura believes that “consonance” is the key to living a limitless life and on the show we discuss what that means, how to use her unique framework to get “unstuck” and live life on your terms, the value of owning your ambition as a woman, and much more! Laura is a a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold a successful international executive search firm and served as a Presidential Appointee in Bill Clinton's White House, helping shape AmeriCorps. In the context of the book, Limitless is the concept of moving away from a “singular” definition of success and to create your own which is something we discuss often on this podcast. Laura and I agree that if you spend time worrying about someone else's definition of success you lose your way and what's possible for you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: People get stuck because of faux humility. The best anecdote to being stuck is movement but we've lost our ability to be ambitious. It is important to ask “What do I really want?” She asks women “Would being in a position of power allow you do to more for the people you love? Can you say, ‘I can own that big dream. I can dare to think of myself as the person that belongs in that place.' Own that for yourself. Do what do you need to do first. Feel like you deserve it. Demand that shot.” When you demonstrate more competence you gain more confidence. Laura takes us through the 4 C's that make up “consonance”. The 4 Cs: Calling – she helped people find work in non-profit for 25 years but for many people their purpose is buying a beach house and having a sports car. In the book, she says “that's okay”. The only person who should get a vote is you. Whatever drives is you is all that matters. Contribution. Ask yourself, “What do I want my life to look? Does this allow me to manifest the life that I want?” Connection – Ask – “if I didn't get out of bed – would anyone notice? Why do I matter?” We get busy, but is what you are doing quality time and focused on what matters to you? Control – does my work allow me to have control over the amount of connection and contribution with others. Laura's 3 Best Tips: “Write your plans in pencil. There is no part of your life that is directional forever. If you want to change – change.” “No is a complete sentence. I'm sorry but I can't…” is a phrase you should feel comfortable saying.” “Let's stop leaning in with one definition of success and define it on our own terms and lean in to that.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Laura Gassner Otting – Laura's website Laura's Limitless Quiz On all social @heylgo Michele on Instagram This episode was sponsored by Design a Life You Love, A Woman's Guide to Living a Happier and More Fulfilled Life. Buy Jill's book! "I just want to remind everybody that social media is social." - Jill Author and esthetician Samantha Dench calls in because she has a ton of followers on social media, but has a hard time converting sales. Brad says she needs to think about the value that she's offering. Jill also reminds her that she needs to be social on social media - more like you're sitting and meeting a friend for coffee, and less like you're trying to sell. "Inviting people to community on a one-on-one basis is really powerful." - Brad As the year draws to a close there’s one thing that’s nearly certain. Brad's to-do list is overflowing! Maybe you’ve been hustling to get ready for the holidays, or maybe your clients have a lot of end of year requests that they want you to finish before their budget goes away. But the end of the year can be overwhelming for many. Brad's father once said, “Brad, when you find you are at the bottom of a hole, stop digging!” How do we get out of that hole when our to-do’s are overwhelming? Stop and do three things: Say No -- Stop Doing List: there are probably some things you don't need to do. Delegate: What can I hand off to others? Declare Bankruptcy: Start over in the new year. How do you deal with overwhelm and your to-do list? Guest: Samantha Denchhas been a licensed esthetician since 2003 and owner of Skin Deep since 2010. Baker Labs does online marketing for those in the healthcare space. His problem is that his team is remote, and he's trying to figure out a way to bring them together in a way that's more meaningful and has better communication. They use tools like Slack and Zoom to communicate. Brad says maybe they should have a daily check-in on Slack. Or on Zoom, build in some chit-chat to the agenda. Jill suggests leaving Zoom open for a bit to have more of a real-time feel (or using Daily, like she does!) and there's no agenda. You can do the same type of things that they do in an office, like cake for someone's birthday, Brad says - just do it on screen. Or just get together once a year in a physical space, he says. If you think you can't afford it, try to plan it around an event that some of the team members are already going to, says Jill. "You have to do what's best for your business." - Brad Listener Rebecca writes in, "What loyalty do I owe to my suppliers?" Brad suggests that Rebecca goes back to her supplier and tells them that she's more impressed with the other supplier she's found. She's not necessarily doing it for negotiation with her current supplier, and it will be easier if she sticks to facts. Jill and Brad once again delve into the murky area concerning loyalty. When circumstances dominate us it is easier to notice how the things we think manifest in our lives. Let's talk about balance and how we can turn the negative outcomes into positive ones! Camron is back from the city that never sleeps, so he and Brian dive right into another fantastic Superhero Friday installment of The Real Brian Show. In This Episode Do you like Autumn? Hopefully more than the Nightfox... Guinness and Gouda Bread, courtesy of Great Harvest Will Smith's motivational sky diving speech What we think about ourselves and about our situations manifest Happiness is a choice Alien: Isolation and Overwatch comments Manifests “What you sow in thought, either useful or useless, manifests itself sooner or later in your circumstances.” Cogito ergo sum. I think, therefore I am. It's a phrase people toss around like candy at an Independence Day parade, thinking there is so much pride in thinking and, thus, being. The phrase, originally penned by Rene Descartes (philosopher from the 1600s), was fascinated by the idea that in order to contemplate doubt our existence, we also must have the capability of doubting (thinking), which thereby negates any doubt we can have over our existence. In the centuries since Descartes' day, many people have taken his words in many directions, have argued semantics and have been skeptical of proper definitions... but if we strip all that away for a moment and just meditate on the basic premise, we're left with a stunning realization that we're only capable of questioning the things we have enough knowledge on to know any different way of being. Follow? It's kind of interesting. I had the issue as a kid of being well-read, but lacking formal instruction around pronunciation. I read a lot of stories and inferred many words from context, but the building blocks of language were only beginning to come together for me and, as a result, I didn't know how to pronounce a lot of the words I was reading. The one that I always remember most vividly is the word facade. Properly pronounced, it sounds like fuh-sawd. The way I pronounced it was more like fah-cayd. But I never questioned the word, or pronunciations in general, up until I said the word in public and was lovingly chided. I didn't know enough to question the pronunciation, but after I did... it became quite consuming and is still something I work on getting correct to this day. Brian and Camron talk a lot about how our situations perpetuate our thought process, and vice versa. What we think about ourselves and our situations begins to manifest. Like biting the same spot on the inside of your mouth repeatedly, we inadvertently point ourselves to the things we think even when it stuff we don't want. Inversely, as Brian points out, we are fully capable of producing positive effects from this tendency! When we can be confident about decisions, about who we are and why we know what we know, we can think about things that point us to what we want and achieve those goals. Having the capacity to question ourselves is a great tool, but it should be a tool we wield in order to grow and better ourselves and our circumstances instead of it becoming a road block.
