Today's guest on the ADHD-ish podcast is my client, Anne Levine, a professional coach whose unique approach is centered around creating change that sticks. With a passion for integrating past successes into new ventures, Anne Levine specializes in guiding clients through the complexities of ADHD and personal growth challenges. For a number of reasons, many individuals with ADHD struggle with substance abuse, and achieving long term sobriety requires a deep understanding of not only how to change our beliefs and behaviors, but how to sustain them. With 30 years in recovery, Anne brings a profound understanding about achieving lasting change to her coaching practice. Because her background is so varied and her experience is rich, Anne was struggling to hone in on her specific niche and unique coaching framework. As a former therapist with several careers under my belt, who also has ADHD, I understood her challenge and knew exactly how to help her. And, I knew she was ready, when she said:"I want to deliver something so clear so that my client can say, 'This is what I did. If you want to do this, talk to her.'" Anne Levine

This week on the podcast, we're doing something a little bit different. A pod takeover. I invited my friend, Michelle Warner to take over my podcast feed. Her podcast Sequence Over Strategy is the only business podcast that I religiously listen to. Michelle and I are incredibly aligned with how we approach business (and she's also the opening speaker for the Make Marketing Suck Less virtual event). Aligning Marketing and GrowthDo you struggle to decide your marketing strategy? Do you know if you want to reach as many people as possible or just your target audience? Michelle Warner, a business designer and strategist, discusses a shift in her marketing strategy. Previously focused on one-on-one work and relationship marketing, she's now transitioning to teaching more bootcamps, which requires a higher volume of leads. This shift means she needs to balance her marketing strategies, incorporating more traffic marketing alongside relationship marketing to align with her new product mix.Michelle explains the difference between relationship marketing (deep, authentic connections) and traffic marketing (mass outreach) and stresses the importance of aligning marketing strategies with your business model. She also highlights her involvement in Michelle Mazur's summit, "Make Marketing Suck Less," which aims to help businesses find suitable marketing strategies. For more details and to join the summit visit: https://drmichellemazur.com/event

In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Michelle Mazur, a communications coach and consultant. Her slogain is, "Make marketing suck less." Let's face it: Most of us didn't go into business to be marketers. But it's something we have to do. It will always suck for a lot of people...but she helps make marketing easier and more fun. Storytelling is one of the ways to make marketing more fun. For Michelle, that's am unusual way. to deal with the client's pain. Instead of magnifying the pain, she suggests we name a villain that the client can fight. You will learn: Why having a villain in your story makes you a better marketer Some especially evil villains in online marketing (including mine, Michelle's and some others) Why you should give your villain a name (like "web slubs" or "overlord") Why internal blocks cannot be true villains Where storytelling has gone off track You can find Michelle at her website: Dr. Michelle Mazur Resources mentioned: bookshop.org Christina Hills - Website Creation Workshop Course: A Story That Sells

Is marketing unethical? What about tactics like scarcity or significance? Should copywriters be using these persuasive elements in their copy? If not, why not? And when is it acceptable? Our guests for the 385th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast are Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur, hosts of their own podcast called Duped where they talk about the misuse of persuasion in marketing. Between the four of us, we figured out the answers to these questions and more (almost). Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Duped Podcast Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: At some point in your writing career, most copywriters bump up against a persuasion tactic that just feels off. Or worse, they're asked to do something they don't feel good about. Maybe it's as simple as adding a deadline timer to an offer with no real deadline. Or it might be something worse… like selling programs to people who can't afford them, or who will never get the promised results. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, Kira Hug and I had a chance to speak with the dynamic duo behind the Duped Podcast, Maggie Patterson and Michelle Mazur. We talked about those dubious marketing tactics, when it's okay to use them, and when you need to be the adult in the room who says, this is going to far. If you've ever wondered where the line is when it comes to marketing ethics, this episode will give you something to think about. But first, I want to tell you abou The Copywriter Underground. You've heard about the library of training that will help you build a profitable business. You've heard about the monthly coaching, and the almost weekly copy critiques and the helpful group of members ready with support and even the occasional lead. Last week we recorded an exclusive training for Underground members on the diagnostic scorecard that helps you close just about any prospect or project on a sales call. It's the kind of business secret you don't read about in free facebook groups or even on most email lists. But right now, you can watch that training and get the diagnostic scorecard to help you close more projects when you go to thecopywriterclub.com/tcu and join as a member. But hurry, that training disappears in a few days. Now, let's hear what Michelle and Maggie had to say… Kira Hug: All right, welcome, Michelle, Maggie. So good to have both of you here. Let's kick off with the catalyst. What was the catalyst for Duped and that partnership between the two of you? Michelle Mazur: Well, I believe it started with me. Maggie and I vox a lot about things we're seeing and chatting about it. I sent her a Voxer message and said, hey, I think we should do a limited series podcast episode where we dive into some of these topics. And that was the catalyst. We were already creating the content in our Voxer conversations. And we're like, well, what if we just open that up to a wider audience? And we intended just to do, I think, eight episodes and maybe a second season. And then we realized, oh, wow, we have a lot to talk about here. Rob Marsh: So for anybody who's not already heard duped or aware of duped or even met you, Maggie and Michelle, tell us a little bit about, let's just lay that groundwork. What is Duped and why should people be listening to it? Maggie Patterson: So Duped is a consumer advocacy podcast that is really designed to help consumers in the online business space make more critical, nuanced decisions. Because what we tend to see is a lot of stories of, I bought XYZ, or I signed up with this coach, and I had a really negative experience. And from my perspective as a business owner, there's two ways we can approach this. We can try to get every business owner to reform their practices, which we're never all going to agree.

Market your business without social media and improve your mental health. It is possible to grow your business without social media. You can market your business without social media and build a successful, sustainable business. Is investing in social media worth it? At first, Meg used a Facebook group to market her business, get clients, and serve her community. But then she realized that because of the algorithm she was losing money on the Facebook group. When she evaluated the metrics, she was losing money. So you let her social media manager go and forgot to post. Maybe not the best strategy, to just walk away without an announcement, but when she did, nothing changed in her business. She continued to attract clients and make money. The bottom line, Meg created content for people who already knew her instead of for an algorithm. From there Meg did an experiment, which is what marketing is, experimenting to see what works to attract clients. Meg mentioned that Robyn and Meg were introduced by Michelle Mazur. Learn more from Michelle by listening to episode 119. There is more to digital marketing than social media You can market your business without social media. There are many other ways to market your business whether you are an online business or brick-and-mortar business. And if you decide to leave social media, invite your followers to join your email list to stay connected and continue to learn from you. The effect of social media on mental health When you are bombarded with bro marketing and the glamorous life of success so many people post about, you can become intimidated. Comparison and imposter syndrome can result in fear, doubt, anxiety, and depression. Keep in mind also, that when you spend a lot of time on social media and give a lot to your audience, when they become a paying customer, they will expect much more from you. Set boundaries so that followers will recognize your expertise and respect your time. Boundaries are key for time management and maintaining a healthy mind and positive mindset. The more followers you have, the more demand on you and your time. Keep that in perspective as you set goals to grow your follower counts. Expertise is often undervalued in today's online culture, especially when the coaching industry deems anyone an expert who is "two steps ahead" of their client, but Dr. Michelle Mazur is determined to change that. With a Ph.D. in communication, and a brilliant framework called "The Three Word Rebellion", author, speaker, podcaster, and messaging consultant, Michelle Mazur has a lot to say about expertise, the anti-expert bias that is flooding the internet with cookie-cutter programs, short-sighted advice and leaving people feeling duped. I can't believe 2022 is almost over! During the Creative Freedom Retreat last week, we began planning for 2023, and I think this particular episode is a perfect way to end Season 7 of the Creative Freedom Show and segway into the new year. I've been in the online world for almost 30 years (zoinks!). I've been a business coach for almost 20 years. I've seen a lot, done a lot, and worked with many different clients in that time: direct sellers, solopreneurs, and now creative entrepreneurs. Over time, I put A LOT of content out there. Some of it resonates, some of it doesn't, and in the process, you're left carrying this sort of hodgepodge of “stuff.” At the end of 2021, I got really clear that my message wasn't landing with my right audience. Being in the online space for so long, I felt challenged to find someone I could trust. Someone who got ME. And most importantly, someone who wasn't going to snow me (if you know, you know!) but would help me figure out exactly what I wanted my new messaging to be. For the final episode of Season 7 and 2022, I'm sharing my interview with Dr. Michelle Mazur - where we demystify the process of rolling out and/or pivoting your message to reach YOUR right audience. Bonus: I'm also sharing the messaging guide we created for my business, so you can see how this works.
94: How To Communicate The Impact You're Here To Make. Our guest today is Michelle Mazur a messaging expert who works with brilliant business owners and changemakers who are shaking things up but having trouble talking about it. She combines the tools of successful social movements with the qualitative research skills she earned in her Communications Ph.D. to help them craft their powerful, captivating message. She is the author of the 3 Word Rebellion & host of the Rebel Uprising podcast. Today Michelle shares how the seeds of the work she is doing today were planted back in High School, in the speaking and debating society and how this fostered her interest in communication leading to graduate school and a Ph.D. in Communication studies. You will hear her take a stand against “bro marketing” and unnecessary hype as she is on a mission to help the many experts who are doing really great work, yet they get overlooked and ignored in favor of people with less experience & expertise. Why? Because they don't know how to communicate their value and promote their expertise. It's clear she wants to put an end to that. Listen in as we talk through what it means to create your 3-Word Rebellion and why that is so important for your business, especially if you want to create a movement and not just a transactional business. Michelle's energy is infectious, she has such enthusiasm for her work, and more than that she shares simple and actionable ideas to help you communicate the value of what you do. I left the conversation feeling so inspired by her vision of a marketplace filled with changemakers who can Cleary articulate exactly what they do in ways that helps them stand out and get hired. If you want to make more of an impact, you need clarity in your messaging and a 3-Word Rebellion can help. I think you're going to get a lot of value by listening to Michelle and her unique approach to helping you stand out with authenticity and power. Michelle Mazur is a messaging expert who helps brands of all shapes and sizes craft their own unique and powerful messages. This isn't as easy as it sounds. But with her “3-Word Rebellion” approach—drawing on social movements and her background in market research—Michelle helps brand builders simplify and clarify. She shares how this week on the On Brand podcast. About Michelle Mazur Dr. Michelle Mazur is a messaging expert who works with brilliant business owners who are shaking things up but having trouble talking about it. She combines the tools of successful social movements with the qualitative research skills she earned in her Communications Ph.D. to help them craft their powerful, captivating message. The author of the 3 Word Rebellion, host of the Rebel Uprising podcast and featured in Fast Company, Entrepreneur, and Inc., she knows that speaking about what you do in a clear and captivating way is the key to reaching the people you could help the most and making more money in your business. Episode Highlights “We are terrible at describing what we do!” Michelle exclaimed as we began our conversation. Why is this? Part of it is the Curse of Knowledge but she also cited the work of Lee Lefever noting that our level of knowledge on our business or area of expertise is often Level 10. The mistake we make is addressing our audience at Level 6 when they're actually at a Level 2. The Russian nesting dolls of messaging. The metaphor was mine but Michelle's definitions for these concepts imply this hierarchy. “What is messaging? It's what you want to say. Copywriting is how you turn that into words. And marketing amplifies this—but you have to have the messaging first.” Just three words? How does this work?!? As Michelle explained, 3-Word Rebellions are everywhere. “Look at Simon Sinek and Start with Why and Tim Ferris with the Four-Hour Work Week. This has its roots in social movements such as Black Lives Matter, Make America Great Again, and Me Too. You want to create curiosity around the change you want to see in customers or your industry.” What's one thing listeners can do to get started? If you're excited about crafting your 3-Word Rebellion but don't know where to start, consider this advice from Michelle: “Listen to your clients—they're constantly talking about you. Plus, it's great when you can pull from customer language.” What brand has made Michelle smile recently? Funko Pops! I couldn't agree more—with over 20 of the fun figurines adorning my desk and the walls of the On Brand podcast recording studio. How are you doing? So if you are new around here, I'm Teresa welcome. It's great to have you here. And if you've been a long term listener. I am so grateful that you have stuck around. I appreciate it so much, or I literally would just be talking to myself in a room, uh, for no good reason. So this week I wanted to talk to you about how you have a value driven business and how you have a heart centered business. And what I mean by all that. And how do you even know if you are doing that? How do you change if you're not? So a lot of this has come down to the fact of, I think I've always had, I've always aligned my business with my values unbeknowingly really I've just happened to have done it. And then when I've done this exercise and various things, I've realized that actually it sits pretty well. But not all aspects of my business aligned with the values and who I am and what I'm about. And when we talk about heart centered, what I mean by that is that it lines up with my passion and my purpose and it lines up with me and who I am. And it makes me feel good. Like when I think of something being heart centered, it's like you're coming from a great place and it feels nice. And if you've been listening for a while, you know that I've gone through a bit of a, you know, a bit of an interesting time in terms of all of this in terms of realizing that actually some things in my business didn't make me feel nice. Particularly how it comes down to selling in the online space and what some people are like. And, and how it can be a little bit underhand and a bit, little bit sleazy and a little bit bro marketing. And if you're not sure, you know what I mean by all that go back and listen to the episode with Dr. Michelle. I'll make sure we link up to that in the show notes. But yeah. So for me, I've been trying to bring more in line with who I am. Now. The products that I sold, the service that I give were always very much in line with me. I, uh, you know, want to do things very credibly. I listen to people. I see people. My community matter to me and I've never taken anybody or anything I do for granted. I'm also not too big for my boots that I won't do anything and everything that people ask me to, if I can fit it in. And if I've got time. I care about my community. So I will respond to everybody who DMs...

Michelle Mazur wants to know what makes you angry. Working with brilliant business owners who are shaking things up (but having trouble talking about it), she combines the tools of successful social movements with the qualitative research skills she earned in her communications PhD. By getting clear on both what they stand for and what they're rebelling against, she helps her clients craft a powerful, captivating message that has audiences flocking to hire them and are desperate to spread the word. The author of 3 books (including the newly-released 3 Word Rebellion) and the host of the Rebel Uprising podcast & the co-host of Duped: The Dark Side of Online Business, Michelle has been featured in Fast Company, Entrepreneur and Inc. She knows that having a clear and captivating message is the key to reaching the people you could help the most, in a way that is powerful and feels effortless.
