"GPYR" I'm admittedly a bit fixated on a 16 year old Josh Joplin getting in the van and driving away from his family, his friends and high school in order to blaze his own musical trail out there in the American wild, but I think I'm mostly fixated on that for both its ambition and its bravery. For starters, it's cool that Josh had the belief the world would find him--and it did. But to know that or believe that at 16 is remarkable--when I was 16 I was staying up late watching Letterman and making mix tapes for girls and had no ambition that would get me in a van by myself and head down the highway peddling my wares. But Josh Joplin did. And we talk about that a great deal because I'm in awe of him doing something most 16 year olds couldn't have done. All these years later, the DC born Joplin has almost fifteen albums under his belt, and each one further proves his uncanny genius. From his first album A Present For Hitler--which is maybe one of the best debut album titles ever--to his new one GPYR, Joplin has demonstrated he's a songwriter of tremendous poeticism and unreasonable melodic smarts. I'll get to GPYR in a second--but before I do, let me give you a few biographical bits; he's toured all over the U.S. as well as Europe and Australia, been on Conan and Letterman, had his albums produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads and the Modern Lovers, had his music appear in shows like Scrubs, Dawsons Creek, Party of Five and Roswell, was neighbors with Dan Zanes of the Del Fuegos, he's put out several fabulous albums with Garrison Starr under the name Among The Oak And Ash and In 2015, Joplin founded the award-winning film production company NarrowMoat. Reuniting with his trusty pals in the Josh Joplin Group, GPYR finds Joplin sounding better than ever. Bringing to mind Reckoning-era R.E.M. and the later work of Tommy Keene, GPYR is a thoughtful blend of jangling indie rock and stirring folk both of which are augmented by sweeping musical architecture that heightens the emotional quality of this powerful, dramatic and altogether thrilling album. www.joshjoplingroup.com (http://www.joshjoplingroup.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooksonline.com Instagram + Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Soy my fan. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Paul Chastain co-founded Velvet Crush rock group. Signed by Alan McGee to his mythic British indie label Creation Records who gave the band's first and second albums, the latter, the seminal “Teenage Symphonies To God”, worldwide release. Paul's musical arc also includes path crossings with a handful of top-notch talent. He has been playing and singing alongside pal Matthew Sweet from the pre-”Girlfriend” days onward. Run-ins along the way with such pop music icons and ne'er-do-wells as Roger McGuinn, Mitch Easter, Susanna Hoffs, Stephen Duffy, Tommy Keene, Ami Onuki (Puffy Ami/Yumi). Drummer/producer John Louis Richardson has similar roots, brushes with greatness and dubious associations. Among them, Joey Molland's Badfinger, Tommy Keene, Gin Blossoms, Keene Brothers, Jay Bennett, Will Hoge. He still plays live and records with DIY power pop pioneers and long time friends, Shoes. John runs his Drum Farm Studio in Menomonie, Wisconsin. A major through-line for the album Ours & amp; Life-events shaped others due to the passing of longtime mutual friend and bandmate Tommy Keene. As an inspirational figure who opened for The Matthew Sweet band, toured with Velvet Crush, and played in Richardson's band, the impact of his loss was significant. This led to the inclusion of Keene's song “Baby Face” on the album, as well as aiding in the completion of the track “Can't Let Go (Oh Tommy)”. Today's guest makes me want to be more international. I'm joined by Paul Chastain. You may know him from his band The Small Square. Or you may remember him from Velvet Crush. Either way, he drops in while traveling to Wisconsin to talk about his early fascination with harmony, when and why he started singing, and meeting Ric Menck to form Velvet Crush. He reveals why the band moved from the midwest to Rhode Island, how they decided on the name Velvet Crush, and their long-term relationship with Matthew Sweet. Paul tells me why Japan is so important to him and the band and what ultimately made him decide to move there. Paul's latest band, The Small Square, have recently released their second album, Ours & Others. He talks about playing tag team piano in the studio, recording music that he wrote for someone else and how it doesn't really feel like it's his, and his connection and ghostly tribute to Tommy Keene. It was around 1998 when I first saw Dave Holmes on my television for MTV's 'Wanna Be a VJ,' competition, and I could instantly see that his love of music ran as deep as mine. Fast forward 25 years later where Dave Holmes is an accomplished writer, actor, tv host, podcaster, and Editor-at-large for Esquire. Recently I connected with Dave, so I invited him on the podcast to talk about where his love of music first began, stories from his career at MTV, and why he chose Tommy Keene's 'Songs From The Film' as his Waterproof Record. It’s always shocking when you stumble upon tweets or articles noting the anniversary of beloved albums. You can’t help but wonder how something that seems like it came out yesterday is actually…well, old! That’s the case with tonight’s show. Every single song you hear is 25 years old. It’s just insane to me that some of my favorite Americana (Son Volt, Golden Smog, Drive-By Truckers), power pop (Sloan, Tommy Keene, Nada Surf), singer/songwriter (Elliott Smith, Silver Jews), and punk (Fugazi, Screeching Weasel, Bad Religion) records have hit this milestone. It just doesn’t feel like nostalgia As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” entry, I’ve got a fabulous rarity. 1998 saw the release of Scandal Controvery and Romance, the classic debut record by The Prissteens. To celebrate the 45th birthday of their A&R rep, Howard Thompson, the pressed up 45 copies of a tribute song called “Oh Howard!”. The b-side of this single was their Undertones cover that featured a few lyrical changes and retitled “Teenage Dicks”. (Both of these tracks were eventually reissued on 2020’s The Hound collection of rarities and demos.) Once again, I’m always actively looking for new covers of “Teenage Kicks”. Please don’t hesitate to create your own personal […]

The decision to do an all-covers show was decided sometime on Wednesday when my good friends High On Stress announced that they would be releasing a Tommy Keene cover on Friday. This was shortly followed by emails containing new cover tracks by Kid Gulliver and The Dirty Denims. Always having a folder full of such tracks ready for air, it was an easy decision that this was the week to do such a show. I also had an intriguing idea to put a new spin on such a show. Searching through my archives, I discovered that I had enough Replacements covers to recreate side one of the “Pleased To Meet Me” album. Although my broadcast program decided to suddenly play two tracks out of order, all of the songs from that group of tracks did make the air. There are also country-tinged coves of old alt-rock tracks by a fabulous British band called Independent Country (including a great ‘mats remake), Richard Thompson and Dead Moon tributes by Country Westerns, Brad Marino doing a lovely Ramones’ track, and many, many other similarly fantastic tunes. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of […]

For a lot of people, the rock music subgenre known as "power pop" is one of those "you know it when you hear it" situations. However, over the years many have tried to describe and dissect what makes power pop unique from musical cousins such as pop rock or jangle pop. Like the 70s and 80s before them, 90s power pop bands put their own spin on the sound, adding a little more guitar crunch while incorporating the hallmark harmonies, British Invasion influenced melodies and arrangements, and other key elements, thanks bands like Sloan, Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub, Superdrag, Fountains Of Wayne and The Posies, and artists like Matthew Sweet, Tommy Keene and Jason Falkner. With our panel, we dig into the sounds, the songs, the albums and the artists of 90s power pop. Songs in this episode: Intro - Sick Of Myself by Matthew Sweet 32:14 - Buddy Holly by Weezer 37:05 - Bottle Of Fur by Urge Overkill 46:17 - Money City Maniacs by Sloan 52:41 - What You Do To Me by Teenage Fanclub Outro - Red Dragon Tattoo by Fountains of Wayne To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. In Episode 47, Tom chats with the wonderful Chris Slusarenko of the Portland-based band Eyelids! Eyelids is coming off a big 2017 that saw the group embark on their first headlining tour of the east coast and release their second full length, “Or.” Tune in to hear all about Chris’s start as a young musician in the Portland scene, his various experiences working with Bob Pollard and Peter Buck, playing with the late, great Tommy Keene, and tons more great stories! Eyelids has some great projects in store for 2018 - including a new full length and a special project including some unpublished works of the late Tim Buckley, so keep your EYES glued to all things Eyelids because you don’t want to miss this incredible stuff!Since Chris couldn’t physically be in my apartment to make some picks from my record collection, we instead talked at length about a letter that Pete Buck sent to Chris in the mid-1980s. In this letter, Peter provided Chris with several recommendations of bands to check out, including Mission of Burma, The Neats, The dB’s, and the Minutemen. The show closes with some tracks from those legendary acts!
Tommy Keene was a gifted songwriter and guitarist who unexpectedly passed away in November of 2017 at the age of 59. His melodic, hook-filled songs, made him a staple of college radio during the 1980's, and influenced many musicians that came after.Keene was a guest on the Icon Fetch podcast on five separate occasions. These interviews reveal a musician who was dedicated to his art, but was also a passionate music fan himself (with a great sense of humor). We've culled the best moments of these interviews, where Keene talks about the many twists and turns of his career, plus he reflects on many of his influences. We've also recorded new tributes to Tommy from R.E.M's Peter Buck, Guy Picciotto of Fugazi, Ted Niceley (who played in Tommy's early band), and Dwight Twilley. Plus, we talked with Josh Grier, who signed Tommy to Dolphin Records in the early days, and Stephen Judge, where Tommy put out a string of fantastic albums during the last years of his life.
Gorman Bechard sits in once again to discuss the DVD release of Who Is Lydia Loveless?, along with the Record Store Day vinyl release of music from the flick.
Tommy Keene first gained national attention with his 1983 EP Places That Are Gone, which was a college radio hit, and earned him accolades from the Village Voice, among others. Since then, Tommy has churned out a catalog of excellent albums, collaborated with Rob Pollard of Guided By Voices, and toured with Paul Westerberg, but one thing has remained constant, his gift of melody. Tommy’s just released his 12th full-length is Laugh in the Dark. He definitely wears his influences a little more confidently on his sleeves this time around. He also discusses the great payola scandal of 1986.
With his drumming, comedy, and IMMENSE punk knowledge; this week’s guest is the definition of a Turned Out A Punk triple threat. This week Damian sits down with the great Jon Wurster to talk about his incredible journey through punk and music. Also covered (but not at all limited to) -The naturalness of the phone line -The Sex Pistols on the nightly news: exciting and scary -Growing up in the mennonite farmlands outside Philadelphia -Hearing the Ramones for the first time -Rock World -Hearing Train In Vain on the radio -Trying to buy London Calling but it had a “Parental Warning” sticker -The awesomeness of Soul Asylum -The Carpenters live -The Osmonds go rock -Randy Johnston: The world’s most famous white Jimi Hendrix impersonator. -Seeing the Ramones live -The A’s and The Reds: Philly LOVES sports in music -Robert Hazard and Girls Just Want To Have Fun -Hooters: Live Aid’s darkest story -Going to see the Dead Kennedys -Autistic Behaviour -Toxic Reasons -Love Hall -DREAM BILL: Superchunk playing with RKL and The Zero Boys -Seeing the Circle Jerks live -Leaving before Minor Threat played and regretting forever -YDI -Long March Jazz Academy -The Obsessed -Iron Cross: amazing live -Learning to play the drums at ten -Meeting Gram Parker years later -Meeting the Dead Milkmen and their importance -Forming Psychotic Norman -Joining The Right Profile -A Freakonomics author’s rock past -Hootie And Blowfish -The amazingness of Tommy Keene -Seeing Mac pre-Superchunk in NJ -The WORST tour across America -Good news, bad news. The good news: you get to see Dread Zeppelin -Washing Mac’s windows -AntiSeen -The greatest breakdown of the Ramones’ drummers ever -Lou Barlow and Evan Dando sing Glue -Matt Watt like the effort -and TONS more!!!!!
Tommy Keene has been a regular guest on our show, but his new album is something different – Excitement at Your Feet is eleven songs that Tommy didn’t write, giving him a chance to show off some of his influences. And he digs pretty deep – most people won’t recognize the covers he does of the Who and Stones. We talk to Keene about the inspiration behind the record, choosing the songs (including a rare one from the Bee Gees), and how soon we could expect a new studio album.
With the recent passing of Reg Presley of the Troggs, Icon Fetch has put together an hour-long tribute to the band and their influential lead singer. We’ll hear the story of “Wild Thing” from the man who wrote the legendary song, Chip Taylor. From Larry Page, the band’s manager & producer, who wouldn’t give up on the song, even though everyone hated it, Mike Mills of R.E.M., who played with the band on a collaboration called Athens Andover, and Graeme Clark of Wet Wet Wet, who took the Troggs’ “Love is All Around” back to the top of the charts in the Nineties. Also contributing are Richard Barone, Peter Zaremba of the Fleshtones, Tommy Keene, producer Mitch Easter, Debora Iyall of Romeo Void, pianist David Lanz, Jon Weiss of the Vipers, Peter Holsapple of the dB’s, and filmmaker Grant Wakefield, who talked with Presley about his obsession with crop circles.
Recorded 09/22/11. We talk last week's Tommy Keene show at the Turf Club and James Vincent McMorrow at the Cedar. Michelle interviews James Vincent McMorrow. And we talk upcoming shows.
–For 30 years, he’s created radio ready music that never gets played on the radio–Melodic rock, power pop, or just plain good music – whatever you call it, Tommy Keene has been making it for the last 30 years. Hot on the heels of 2010’s 2-CD anthology, we sit down again with Keene to talk about his brand-new studio album Behind the Parade. Unique to this project, he recorded most of the instruments himself at his home studio. Yet, the signature Tommy Keene sound, with chiming guitars, memorable hooks, and big drums (courtesy of session-ace Rob Brill), are all intact. We also touch on the crazy video he made for the first single, “Deep Six Saturday.”
Recorded 09/01/11. Happy B-day Michelle! We talk Frightened Rabbit & Death Cab at Roy Wilkins and Peter Wolf Crier & Twilight Hours at the Minnesota State Fair. We chat with power-pop king Tommy Keene! Previews of the week ahead and our concert wishlists.
ommy Keene has been making his brand of melodic rock for almost 30 years now. His early independent releases garnered high praise from critics, and when he jumped to a major label, big things were expected. Through a series of industry blunders and bad luck, Keene’s rock star ship never came in. Despite the numerous setbacks, the excellent quality of his songs has never wavered. He’s just released his first-ever career spanning collection called Tommy Keene You Hear Me: A Retrospective 1983-2009. Icon Fetch talks to the influential songwriter about his many pitfalls, as well as how he assembled his new collection, and teamed up with Bob Pollard of Guided By Voices.
