Have you ever wondered why despite doing all the “right” things, your body still feels like it's stuck? You might have made every effort to detox, eat clean, and even manage your stress, yet your body seems to be working against you. You're not alone in this. It could be that your nervous system is playing a significant role in keeping your body in this cycle. In this episode, we explore the profound connection between nervous system dysregulation, trauma, and chronic illness—particularly in relation to [Insert Keyword]. Together, we'll break down what this means for your healing journey and how understanding this link could be the breakthrough you've been searching for. Our guest today is Alex Howard, a leading expert in trauma education and chronic illness recovery. We dive deep into how trauma can show up in subtle ways and how it leads to a dysregulated nervous system, impacting everything from immune function to your overall ability to heal. If you're ready to uncover the hidden pieces of the puzzle that might be holding you back, you're in the right place. Key Points: What is trauma and how does it impact the nervous system? Alex defines trauma beyond the typical big events we think of. Trauma can be small, repeated experiences from childhood that leave echoes in our nervous system, which later affects our health.  The four stages of trauma impact: ECHO We break down the ECHO model—Events, Context, Homeostasis, and Outcomes—and how each stage influences the nervous system's ability to regulate and heal.  Why nervous system dysregulation can block your recovery If you're stuck despite multiple treatments, it might be because your nervous system is constantly in a fight-or-flight mode. This dysregulation keeps your body from healing as it should.  The importance of being the “captain of your own recovery ship” Taking charge of your healing process is essential. Alex emphasizes that while practitioners offer vital pieces of the puzzle, you are the one who navigates and brings everything together for true healing.  How resetting the nervous system can transform your health Alex shares his RESET framework for nervous system regulation, detailing how each step—Recognize, Examine, Stop, Emotions, and Transform—helps to shift your body out of survival mode.  The link between trauma and immune system function A dysregulated nervous system not only affects your emotional and mental well-being but also leads to an overreactive or underactive immune system, making conditions like [Insert Keyword] even harder to manage.  The journey to healing isn't just about treating physical symptoms; it's about addressing the root causes buried within the nervous system and the echoes of past trauma. As we've discussed, many people stuck in their recovery journey are unknowingly battling a dysregulated nervous system that keeps them in a state of stress and imbalance. By taking control and learning to reset your system, you can unlock a new level of healing and vitality. Remember, the work isn't always easy, but it's worth it. Your nervous system holds the key to not just surviving, but thriving. It's not just about meditation and mindfulness; it's about recognizing, examining, stopping, dealing with emotions, and transforming your relationship with yourself and the world.  Chronic Stress and Detox Chronic stress can hinder the body's detoxification processes, leading to fatigue and other chronic conditions. Understanding how stress impacts detox can help you identify areas for improvement in your health and well-being. Addressing chronic stress is essential for optimizing your body's detox capacity and overall health. Mitochondria and Stress Management The body's mitochondria play a crucial role in energy production but also have a major role to play in danger signaling under stress, affecting the detox processes. Managing stress effectively can help improve and maintain the mitochondria's optimal function for detoxification. Strategies for Natural Detoxification Developing awareness of triggers and actively addressing patterns can enhance your body's ability to naturally detoxify. Meditation, mindfulness, and emotional trauma work are powerful tools for calming the nervous system and supporting detox processes. Implementing accessible resources like Tai Chi and Qigong can aid in self-regulation to improve your detox capacity and emotional well-being. Listen now and start to detox once and for all! While Duke wasn't given much credit for its 5-0 start, failing to crack the Top 25, the team still has a chance to snap the program's always-beaten streak against Florida State. Diaz has brought his signature defensive aggressiveness, with Duke's defense recording 18 sacks, 13 of which come from a deep defensive line led by Vincent Anthony Jr. and defensive tackles Aaron Hall and Kendy Charles. At quarterback, Texas transfer Maalik Murphy has logged thrown for multiple touchdowns in five of six games, while Star Thomas, a transfer from New Mexico State, has emerged as the lead back in a room capable of putting up yards against an FSU defense still trying to find consistency. Both women are family mediators who are leading experts in this area and are all about alternative dispute resolution and using the tools of communication, active listening, and probing questions to allow parties to explore their grievances and decide upon an agreement together. Separation can be a most difficult and confusing time for an individual and their families, and these two hope to alleviate some of that stress through their roles as Family Mediators. In this hour, Tavis is joined by Alex Howard, author of the new book It's Not Your Fault: Why Childhood Trauma Shapes You and How to Break Free (just out yesterday, September 12) for a conversation on the intricate interplay between our past and present selves and how we can break free from the chains of childhood trauma.

Congenital heart defects are one of the most common kinds of birth defects. They can alter the way a child's heart works and depending on how mild or serious they can make a big impact on day-to-day lives of the child and their family. The non-profit organization Intermountain Healing Hearts provides support, resources, events, and help to families of children and adults with congenital heart defects and childhood onset heart disease.  In this episode of Utah Weekly Forum, FM100.3 Host Rebecca Cressman is joined by Melissa Andrew, Executive Director of Intermountain Healing Hearts, and Alex Howard, IHH President, who share more about how families can get support from Intermountain Healing Hearts and the details on the upcoming Walk for Healing Hearts on the morning of September 9th in Sandy, Utah. Healing isn't linear, although the world is designed to embody this masculine way of living and being, Nature and Source is cyclical. Meaning, the path to getting unstuck and healing is in cycles and seasons and taking it in small steps and doses at a time. We are primed to adapt to change. It's only the ego mind that keeps us stuck in spirals and staying the same, as it fears disruption of the current stress patterns and cycles. In this episode, I share with you a myriad of ways on how to get UNSTUCK now, and create a practice of the "miracle" of healing in microdoses. You will learn how to unravel the covert traumas (as my guest Alex Howard spoke about in Ep. 71)  + collective wounds that created the childhood and ancestral wounds you experience today.  What was created as "chronic" pain and traumas can be UNDONE through a life of shifting from the Newtonian to the Quantum, or from the limited and logical mind to the infinite 99.999999% quantum reality of consciousness. Trauma is often described as a catastrophic event that leaves resonance, but the concept of micro-traumas or “covert trauma” as Alex Howard defines, often goes understated and ignored in the  healing world. In this powerful episode with Alex Howard, I had the divine pleasure of connecting with a mentor of mine in the trauma field that finally helped me feel seen for what I have experienced most of my life, a series of covert traumas that collectively become catastrophic to your psyche and nervous system over time. If you've ever felt sad, or anxious and don't know why, this could be you. In fact, it was when I heard Trevor Hall on a podcast say these words that I finally felt seen for what I carried with me all my life. What you carry over time becomes trauma in the body, and most chronic conditions or fatigue result from carrying past trauma, both from childhood or ancestral wounds. Alex will “decode your fatigue” in this episode as he's done in his book and teach you how to listen to your body so the signs don't continue to become symptoms you carry for life. A must listen episode for anyone experiencing physical symptoms from trauma! Today on Biology of Trauma, Alex Howard joins us for part two of our discussion on addressing stored trauma. I learned quickly through my clinical work that before you can address the biological aspect of trauma, you must stabilize the nervous system.    In this episode, Margaret tells her story of how she came to recognize her defense mechanisms that stemmed from childhood trauma that prevented her from experiencing life in the moment. She used the 21-Day Journey to reclaim her life and her nervous system. Once she understood that her sense of safety was in her own control, Margaret's trajectory shifted into a life of infinite possibilities.   By creating a sense of felt safety internally, you can increase your capacity to withstand external stress. The 21-Day Journey teaches you the tools to stabilize, support, and remain in the parasynthetic state so you can end the cycle of dissociation. When you strengthen your ability to withstand stress, you gain control over your nervous system and develop the ability to choose how you react rather than being trapped by your triggers.  Key Takeaways: [1:45] Where to begin with stored trauma? [2:40] Reaching the parasympathetic state before addressing the data points of your trauma [3:18] Stabilize, support, and then build the skills to remain in a parasympathetic state  [5:25] Building the nervous system's ability to withstand stress before addressing the biology [7:20] Without clinical experience, theoretical approaches can actually hurt patients   [20:30] Doing the work with your nervous system  allows you to choose how you react  [22:00] Creating your own sense of felt safety internally before focusing on external trauma work [23:50] Margaret's story of stabilizing her own nervous system [25:00] Living life at a distance: going through the motions in full dissociation  [29:00] Coming to terms with the fact that she did not feel safe in the world [31:00] Self-sabotaging her own opportunities in health and beauty to avoid conflict in life [33:00] Learning to be present and experience life without dissociating  Find More From Alex Howard: The Optimum Clinic   How do you know if you have trauma? Today on Biology of Trauma, Alex Howard, The founder of the Optimum Health Clinic, joins me for a Fireside chat. In this episode, I share my story of how I transitioned from working as a general surgeon to a trauma practitioner. My hope is that my journey will provide some hope and show you that there is a clear path forward through overwhelm to being your best self.    Overwhelm is synonymous with trauma, and I certainly was living in a severe pattern of overwhelm without even knowing it. I struggled to help my adopted son overcome his own trauma because, at that point, I did not have the tools I teach others today. Until I was bedridden and forced to pause, I had never taken the time to reflect on my mental or physical well-being. During that time, I learned so much about myself, healing and trauma. Everyone experiences trauma, and everyone can heal;  that is why I do this work.    In every medical discipline, trauma is rampant, but so few practitioners are equipped with the  knowledge to properly address stored trauma in the body. Some unknowingly worsen the nervous system by introducing tools too fast or at the wrong time. It is hard to accept that healing is a journey with no shortcuts, but there is always hope. Your journey can start today by building awareness and taking even the smallest step toward healing. Key Takeaways: [2:05] What do we even mean when we say trauma? [4:00] Trauma is not just mental but is stored in the physical body [5:00] Anything that overwhelms the system is trauma [7:29] The vagus nerve rules digestion, so digestive issues are a common pattern of overwhelm [10:11] Dr.Aimie's journey from general surgeon to trauma practitioner [11:08] Learning to heal her son and accepting when it was time to let go [13:00] Releasing control and, for the first time, addressing her own stored trauma  [14:45] Bedridden and reaching the tipping point  [18:30] What common mistakes do people make on their healing journey? [19:50] Detoxing too much and too fast is dangerous when dealing with stored trauma [20:20] Healing is often years of consistent, incremental, and slow healing [22:20] During overwhelm, your body doesn't have the energy to make good decisions   Find More From Alex Howard: The Optimum Clinic    How do you know if you have trauma?
