In today's show I am interviewing my friend Jill McCormick as we talk about grace for the try-hard girl, especially when we sense we are in a season of change.   Anyone feel like a try-hard girl? You know, the one who loves Jesus and her people so she tries hard to get it all done, to not disappoint, to do everything well, to always be there, to help fix the problems and right the wrongs? That try-hard girl lives in me and I don't know about you but the idea of living in the freedom of God's grace is something I desperately need. And I believe you will find so many things you can personally relate to and take away from my conversation with Jill that will fill your soul with grace.   Some Things We Covered Who is the try-hard girl? Understanding how we can extend grace to ourselves. Accepting we are human beings, not productivity machines. Why it is so hard to admit that something needs to change? Ideas about how to create space to be with Jesus in the midst of the chaos. How false beliefs and a distortion of the truth of who God is and what He says has reinforced the "try-harder" within us. The biggest shift to be aware of as we become a little less of the try-hard girl.   Resources Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund The Rest of God by Mark Buchanan Steffany Gretzinger's song, “Come out of Hiding” and Pete Scazzero's books, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality & Emotionally Healthy Leader.   About Jill McCormick Jill McCormick is the host of the Grace In Real Life podcast and the writer behind jillemccormick.com, spaces where she shares common-sense grace with the try-hard girl who wants her faith to intersect with her real and full life.  Jill lives in South Texas with her high-school-sweetheart-now-husband Ryan, their two daughters, and one Vizsla puppy. Most days you'll find her with a book about the Enneagram in her hand or a podcast playing in her earbuds.  She's been featured in RELEVANT magazine, Joyful Life magazine, ForEveryMom.com, and the Christian Woman Leadership Podcast. Do you ever struggle to identify, embrace, or use your gifts with confidence? You’re not alone, and this episode will help you reframe your thoughts about embracing your gifts. As Christian women leaders, it’s important for us to embrace our gifts--but how exactly do we do this? In the first of our Summer Throwback Series episodes, we’re sharing clips from several of our past guests around the topic of embracing your gifts.  You’ll hear encouraging and challenging words to help you remember some powerful truths about acknowledging, understanding, and using your gifts with confidence. After you listen, make sure to head back and listen to the full episodes with these guests, as these clips are just a small glimpse into the incredible conversations.   Featured Guests on this episode: Abby Rike Rockenbaugh, Episode 3 Breshana Miller, Episode 45 Lilah Higgins, Episode 5 Patrice Washington, Episode 51 Rachael Gilbert, Episode 14 Jill McCormick, Episode 7   Key Quotes from this throwback episode:   “Whenever I say, ‘Oh I’m not a leader, oh I’m not good enough to do that’, then I’m basically calling God a liar.” - Abby Rike Rockenbaugh   “If God has called you to this, and you know this is what you can do--this is how God has blessed you in order to serve other women--there are women who need it.” - Breshana Miller   “When you’re trying to build a business off of your skills, and you’re trying to walk in what God has for you, it’s something you don’t really notice, cause it’s super easy for you, and it doesn’t feel like work.” - Lilah Higgins   “Even as I was building confidence, there was still that seed of doubt that tried to come in.” - Patrice Washington   “The more time I hang out with God… I don’t have the words to express how He shifts something in my heart.” - Rachael Gilbert   “When we confuse confidence and competence with pride, that’s a problem. Because God has gifted you with competence, and He’s gifted you with gifts to use and acknowledge. And you don’t do the world any favors when you deny your gifting for the sake of not wanting to be boastful.” - Jill E. Quinn McCormick, yes, the daughter of Jill McCormick, shares her story with us today! We cover a lot of topics in our conversation: transition from high school to college, loneliness, open doors for ministry, spiritual questioning, sexual harassment, and even the death of a friend. Quinn candidly talks from the perspective of a senior in college about her first two years as a college student, and how they were not what she expected them to be. There were many headaches and difficulties that she dealt with. Quinn shares about trusting God through the pain she went through. Jill relates the challenge of being a parent, watching her child go through circumstances which were extremely painful, and taking the position of being present, praying for her, and accepting the fact that mom couldn't "fix" it. Jill honestly shares that sometimes there are things in your child's journey that she has to walk through, and the parent's job is to provide support and prayer, and that's all. Jill McCormick talks with me about learning to work with from our giftings and our strengths, instead of working at a job or doing something we "should" do. We deep dive into how to avoid burn out and using our energy and our time on things that we leave and what we're gifted in so we can move into what God has for us to do. By using what God's given us, we are doing his good works and glorifying him. Busyness brings pressure and that pressure comes from external expectations and internal expectations of what we should be doing. We also have a very strong monologue ticker that has negative critique which is exhausting. When we don't taken into account what God's asked us to do, we end up trying to do everything and we can't live that way. We are not designed to live that way. As I've studied rest, when we do the things that light us up, we actually get refreshed. We try to fill every void through busyness. And we wear ourselves out. Some ways that we can figure out how we're wired:  Asking Jesus how he wired us and bring the struggles that we're feeling to him. Jill has done this numerous times. Unlike our inner critic, the voice of God is kind, convicting and gracious. When we hear negative things, that is our inner critic trying to kill and destroy what God's done. The Enneagram is a personality system which breaks down the good and bad things but also shows you your motivation behind what you do what you do. When you start living out of your strengths, it's 1,000 times better and there's freedom. When we live out of what we should do, we feel heavy. On the flipside, operating out of our strengths, there's a lightness and we can walk in freedom. When we talk with Jesus authentically and honestly, and with the real things, we see better results. We can't make forward progress, which is looking more and more like Jesus. He knows it already and he loves us and his grace never runs out. So it's better to do it with Jesus, through his strength and his power. He meets us where we are. One thing that God has taught Jill through parenting is that she's responsible for obedience and He's responsible for the outcomes. That's hard for many of us to accept, especially business owners. We want to control everything. She says, I'm going to do what I can do and I can obey with his help. As a public speaker, Jill speaks on stepping away from doing more and trying harder and walking in grace. We easily extend grace to others but we have a hard time accepting that for ourselves. She's working on a talk about idols are for us as an American mom and what happens when we let go of them. She also talks about Luke 10 as a foundation for self-care and breaking down loving the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind.  One of the things that I, Danielle, am writing on in my book is radical self-care. Not just the pedicure, but the healthy habits that we create. Jesus wants us to take care of ourselves. To find out more about Jill, you can visit her website, Facebook page or her Instagram. Jill McCormick is the writer behind jillemccormick.com, a blog where she shares common-sense grace with the try-hard girl. What happens to a people when the river no longer flows to them? Or it flows, but no longer supports the associated plant and animal communities so important to their culture? What do they do about it? Today’s podcast features Nora McDowell, former Fort Mohave Indian Tribe Tribal Councilwoman and Jill McCormick, Historic Preservation Officer for the Quechan Tribe and the former Cultural Resources Manager and Archaeologist for the Cocopah Indian Tribe for 12 years. They talk about their collaborative efforts with other tribes in both the US and Mexico towards environmental, cultural, and spiritual restoration of the Lower Colorado River. We also talk about natural resources as cultural resources, improving tribal consultation and representation, and how to manage competing interests from various groups, as well as within a tribe.
