Synopsis The world's most popular classical guitar concerto, the “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Joaquin Rodrigo, had its first performance on today's date in 1940, in Barcelona. Joaquin Rodrigo was born in Spain in 1901 and lost his sight at the age of three. He wrote all of his music on a Braille music typewriter. The “Concierto de Aranjuez,” inspired by a small town of that name thirty miles south of Madrid, remains his signature piece, though he wrote a number of other successful works. Rodrigo died on July 6th, 1999, at the age of 97. In 1959, a friend had played a recording of Rodrigo's concerto for the American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Miles Davis said, “After listening to it for a couple of weeks, I couldn't get it out of my mind.” So, Miles Davis played it for his friend, jazz composer and arranger Gil Evans, and in short order the two collaborated on their own 16-minute version of Rodrigo's score. Their collaboration was included on their classic 1960 Columbia LP entitled “Sketches of Spain.” At the recording session, Miles paid Rodrigo this compliment: “That melody is so strong that the softer you play it, the stronger it gets…” Music Played in Today's Program Joaquin Rodrigo (1902-1999) Concierto de Aranjuez Manuel Barrueco, guitar; Philharmonic Orchestra; Placido Domingo, conductor. Classical music has so much to offer. It can get you hyped (think Philip Glass' Glassworks IV: Rubric). It can give you those memorable melodies (think Gustav Holst's Jupiter.) It can even give you your pop music fix (think Tolga Kashif's “The Queen Symphony,” which is based on the music of the band Queen). Yes, it can be hard to get into sometimes, but if you are able to take the time to explore classical music, it has much more to offer than you think. On today's pod we'll help shine a light on a few composers to start your classical music journey. So, hangout with us for a bit as we give you our favorite classical composers.
This week, we meet villagers in India who fear the government is trying to strip them of their citizenship, and Iraqis who are at the forefront of a cultural renaissance in Anbar province. In her conversation with WRCJ’s Peter Whorf, Sharon Isbin talks about her admiration for the Indiana University quartet-in-residence…

Episode 17 - Ballon d'Or, Super Sunday Preview, Racism in football feat. James Makanjuola, Rume Wunieh & Joaquin Rodrigo
Written by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939, the Concierto de Aranjuez is a guitar classic. It was written amid the chaos of the Spanish Civil War, and in circumstances of poverty and personal tragedy. Soul Music explores how the piece touches and changes people's lives. The composer's daughter Cecilia Rodrigo explains how the blind composer was inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez. Nelício Faria de Sales recounts an unforgettable performance deep inside one of Brazil's largest caves, while David B Katague remembers how the piece got him through a difficult period of separation from his family in the Philippines. Guitarist Craig Ogden explains the magic of the piece for a performer, and actor Simon Callow recalls how hearing the piece was a formative experience for him during his schooldays, when it turned rural Berkshire into a piece of Spain.
