Considerado como uno de los más importantes saxofonistas tenores de la historia del jazz, fue conocido por el sobrenombre de The Sound ("El Sonido") debido a su tono cálido y lírico apreciable en temas como su versión de Garota de Ipanema. Destacó en las corrientes del bebop el cool jazz y el bossa nova. A Stan Getz se le sigue llamando “el Sonido” y es que lo que sale de su saxofón es pura ambrosía musical João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, conocido como João Gilberto (Juazeiro, 10 de junio de 1931-Río de Janeiro, 6 de julio de 2019), fue un cantante, compositor y guitarrista brasileño, considerado junto a Antônio Carlos Jobim y Vinícius de Moraes como uno de los creadores de la bossa nova a fines de los años 1950. En el mundo era frecuentemente llamado "padre del bossa nova" y en su país de origen, Brasil, era referido como "O Mito" (El Mito) o (La Leyenda). Su vinculación con el mundo de la música comenzó cuando se casó en 1959 con uno de los primeros guitarristas de bossa nova, João Gilberto. En 1963 estaba acompañando a su esposo en Nueva York mientras grababa con el pianista y compositor Antonio Carlos Jobim y con el saxofonista estadounidense Stan Getz un disco de fusión entre el jazz y la bossa nova. A instancias de su esposo (y no de Getz según otras versiones), cantó unas estrofas y gustó tanto su voz que, a pesar de no tener experiencia previa, grabó el disco Getz/Gilberto, aunque no figuró en los créditos del disco en la primera edición. Astrud Gilberto, la voz en el disco que perdura especialmente es la de la joven y por aquél entonces mujer de João, Astrud Gilberto. Curiosamente, la estrella del exitoso single "The Girl from Ipanema" realizó su primera grabación de estudio en este disco, poniendo voz también en el genial "Corcovado". Dieser Song war für uns die Inspiration, unsere Podcast-Folge in diesem März unter das Thema "Wasser" zu stellen. Im ersten Teil unserer "Four Tops" hört ihr Prog Rock, Spiritual und Schlager (!), gleich zwei Bands aus Bremen (!!) und wie immer einiges an Geschichten zu den Songs, unter anderem über die "Underground Railroad". El quinteto suena redondo a lo largo de los ocho temas del disco, y consigue momentos de gran belleza, como ese dialogo entre saxo y piano que protagonizan Nacho y Angel Andrés en «Dragones Graciosillos«, y el extraordinario solo de Antonio Montiel en la Kanjira; destacar el excelente solo de Nacho al saxo tenor en «Sutilmente Severo», el tema que cierra el disco, el dialogo de Ángel Andrés y Antonio Montiel en «Ciudadano del mundo«, y el recuerdo a la música de los grandes Boopers con los acordes de «Peligrosamente absurdo«, con Nacho Botonero soleando con maestría al saxo tenor. Nacho Botonero, ya lo sabemos quienes seguimos su trayectoria, forma parte de esta excelente hornada de músicos de jazz contemporáneos que vienen desarrollando su trabajo en Andalucía; y lo mismo podemos decir del quinteto que le acompaña en este disco, músicos ya experimentados en decenas de proyectos con: Ángel Andrés Muñoz, uno de esos pianistas imprescindibles en cualquier contexto jazzístico; Nacho Megina, un consagrado baterista y protagonista de algunos de los mejores episodios jazzísticos en Andalucía; por su parte, el percusionista, Antonio Montiel y el contrabajista, Luis Salto, cubren con soltura e imaginación el soporte armónico del grupo, y Nacho Botonero, está brillante, su sonido es fresco, su fraseo, tanto en los saxos como en la flauta, son muy expresivos y nos brinda momentos extraordinariamente brillantes. Con “Descalzos por el barro«, Juan Ignacio Botonero y su quinteto, nos transmite su pasión por el jazz, franqueza en su discurso musical, y continúa con su firme apuesta por explorar caminos inéditos en el jazz contemporáneo huyendo de los standards como socorrida zona de confort. Brazilian songwriter Antônio Carlos Jobim (also called Tom Jobim), born January 25, 1927, is the best known and most prolific of the composers who originated the bossa nova. His compositions have captured the imaginations of jazz musicians from the outset. His lyricism and harmonic imagination have made his tunes popular worldwide, and he is so revered in Brazil, that the Rio de Janero airport is named in his honor, a singular recognition for a popular song writer.

The first one was arranged by Radamés Gnattali and was a huge hit at the turn of the 1940s to the 50s. The song is kind of a symbol of the stylistic change from live music in cassinos (closed by the government in 1948) to small clubs in Copacabana where Bossa Nova and Samba-jazz would eventually be born;Copacabana (second version) - also sung by Dick Farney, but recorded much later (couldn't find the exact date) now in complete Bossa style - I thought it could be interesting to be able to compare both versions;Chega de Saudade - João Gilberto's 1959 recording of Chega de Saudade. Considered by practically everyone interested in music at that time as sounding absolutely novel and unprecedented: the singing, the lyrics, the arrangement, the guitar playing. Kind of Bossa Nova's inaugural moment, the song has kind of a choro form and I once saw Jobim say in an interview that he had the idea when he saw his mother's housemaid singing the choro Sonoroso and he thought something like “well, it seems people can remember a long melody and all these lyrics, after all…”;Chega de Saudade - following the commentary I made about Chega de Saudade and the choro, here a 1963 version - right in the period where it was all happening - by the old-school mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim;Estamos Aí - sung here by Leny Andrade in her debut album, totally positioned as “Modern Popular Music”, as they would define it, it shows very clearly the new style that was emerging - the whole scat singing section in the middle is really pointing to jazz and the lyrics talk about Bossa Nova itself;Rapaz de Bem - Johnny Alf is one of the unsung heroes and precursor of Bossa Nova: the singing, the harmonic language, the compositional aesthetics… it was all there;Embalo - a typical example of what was called samba-jazz back then;Influência do Jazz - by one of the early Bossa Nova composers, Carlos Lyra, the song talks about how samba was influenced by jazz in a somewhat ambivalent manner and has acquired sort of a symbolic, manifesto-like status - we hear a younger Elis Regina singing it here, in the famous program/series O Fino da Bossa;Preconceito - two versions, first Orlando Silva's old school version (1941), then João Gilberto singing the same song years later (2003) and doing his thing;Aos Pés da Cruz - one of the classic João Gilberto recordings. I added it to the playlist just because it's so beautiful;Elis' first recording of Águas de Março is interesting because the guitar “levada” is sort of middle ground between the “modern samba” that will be so characteristic of her band's playing and the more subdivided earlier style of playing samba;Coisa N. 1 - Moacir Santos was also an arranger (they were called maestros, actually) at Rádio Nacional, where Jobim, Radamés, the Trio Surdina guys and many other important musicians worked. Moacir was the only black maestro of the time and had studied with classically-trained composers like Guerra-Peixe (also a maestro at Rádio Nacional) and H. J. Koellreutter (German composer who fled Germany during the rise of the Nazis and is credited as having introduced dodecaphonism in Brazil). He wrote the “Coisas” (Things) and numbered them as if they were “Opus 1”, “Opus 2” etc. Moacir is an entire chapter in itself and unfortunately one can't find the original 1966 recording of the Coisas on Spotify, which used practically all important “modern” musicians living in Rio de Janeiro at the time. This recording was made in 2001 with Moacir's approval and is true to the original arrangement, though the solos were improvised by the musicians;O Mestre Sala dos Mares - written by Elis' contemporaries João Bosco and Aldir Blanc, we first listen to Bosco's recording of this samba, more in the traditional style, with percussion, cavaquinho, 7-string guitar and all, and then Elis' version with most of the band that recorded Elis & Tom - sorry for insisting with the comparison thing, but I think it's instructive and it takes a lot of examples to start grasping some subtleties;É Com Esse Que Eu Vou - first listen to Elis' version and then the traditional one. This is carnival music, really, and they did this wonderful modern, samba-jazzy version;Como Nossos Pais - another, arguably as important, side of Elis. From 1976, this is perhaps her most famous recording and serves here to show that her repertoire was considerably wider than samba. People get really moved by this recording (understandably, at least to my Brazilian ears) and despite the stylistic differences, this is also the same core band we hear in Elis & Tom.

A obra é dividida em 5 movimentos, nos quais são discorridos diferentes temas. O primeiro movimento fala da paisagem virgem do planalto central anterior à construção. O segundo movimento conta a chegada do homem branco e o ímpeto heróico de fundar uma cidade. O terceiro movimento conta a chegada dos trabalhadores. O quarto movimento fala do processo de construção da cidade (a parte mais bela do poema na minha opnião - pois aqui ele fala da dor e das saudades do homem comum). O quinto movimento é um canto de exaltação à nova cidade (que, pra mim, é propaganda política pura). É interessante notar que Vinicius de Moraes parece caminhar em entre uma visão critica e ao mesmo tempo bajulatória de todo esse processo. O que pode parecer contraditório, mas é uma contradição metodológica. Vinicius de Moraes parece entrar em conformidade com um certo ideal de sublimação histórica das contradições do passado e do presente pelo alcance de um bem-futuro (e Brasília representava isso) - que é uma coisa muito marcante tanto no movimento marxista-leninista (especialmente estalinista) quanto no ideal dos militares positivas do nosso Exército. Na parte onde ele fala dos bandeirantes, por exemplo, Vinicius de Moraes exaltata-os como heróis ao mesmo tempo que reforça a ideia de que pelas mãos deles os índios foram massacrados. É um duplo e complexo padrão de admiração-repúdio, de “duplipensar”, que torna a chave de interpretação histórica maleável - sujeita aos interesses de quem a controla. O engraçado é que esse vício estalinista é presente até mesmo em quem seria subordinado, caso vingasse uma revolução. Em suma, Brasília: Sinfonia da Alvorada é arquitetura soviética e pensamento positivista em formato sinfônico. É muito bom, é horrivelmente bom.

Formerly, she played for Brazil's National Volleyball Team and competed in four Olympic Games. She is the two-time world champion in beach volleyball, and won the bronze in 1996 in indoor volleyball.
