The Horn Signal is proudly brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. Join hosts John Snell and Preston Shepard as they interview horn players around the world. Today's episode features Robert Watt, former Assistant Principal Horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Robert Lee Watt was born in Neptune, New Jersey the 4th child of seven. His father, Edward Watt Jr. played trumpet professionally in a Jazz ensemble, “The New Jersey Squires of Rhythm.” When Robert was eight years old he got curious about his father's trumpet, kept high on a shelf. Too short to reach it, Robert conscripted his little brother Tony to help. But with Tony on his shoulders he lost his balance, causing both of them to fall to the floor, trumpet in hand. Robert then attempted to fix the dents in the instrument by using a hammer. The badly damaged trumpet was the way Robert's father discovered his interest in horns. After a serious reproach, Robert's father tried to teach him trumpet. However, it wasn't until years later that Robert discovered the instrument he really wanted to play. While helping his father clean out a room in the basement Robert discovered some old 78 recordings. The curious Robert gave the old recordings a spin. It was the “William Tell Overture” on hearing the French horns on that recording he asked his father what instrument came in after the trumpet. His father informed him that it was a “French horn” “A middle instrument that never gets to play the melody like the trumpet…why, do you like that horn?” His father asked. Robert replied, “It gives me chills when I hear it, I love it. That's what I want to play.” His father informed the young Robert that it really wasn't the instrument for him. Explaining that it was an instrument for thin-lipped white boys. “Your lips are too thick to play that small, thin, mouthpiece. You'd be better suited for the trumpet like you father.” Upon reaching high school Robert seriously pursued the French horn. Approaching the band director of his high school in Asbury Park, Robert was again told that his lips were too thick to play the French horn. After being persistent, the band director gave Robert an old French horn that barely worked. Nevertheless, Robert advanced quickly and was soon winning auditions for honor bands and orchestras throughout the state of New Jersey, bringing great honor to his high school. After high school Robert was accepted to the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he majored in music and studied French horn with Harry Shapiro of the Boston Symphony. Mr. Shapiro took great interest in Robert pushing him hard. At the end of his first year Mr. Watt was asked to perform the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, with the Boston Pops Orchestra under Arthur Fiedler. The following summer he received a fellowship to the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood. Returning to the Conservatory for his third year Mr. Watt was informed by the president's office that the Conservatory had financial problems and that all scholarships would be canceled for the coming year. At the end of his junior year at the Conservatory Mr. Watt was informed by his French horn teacher that it was time for him to audition for a position in a major symphony orchestra. On the advice of his teacher, Mr. Watt chose Los Angeles and Chicago. When Mr. Watt returned from his audition journey, he had made the finals at both auditions. Two months later The Los Angeles Philharmonic offered him the position of Assistant First Horn. Making him the first African American French horn player hired by a major symphony orchestra in the United States. Mr. Watt joined the ranks of only a handful of African Americans playing in symphony orchestras in these United States. According to the American Symphony Orchestra League, that represented less than 2% of the total, out of twenty-six top orchestras. Mr. Watt held his position until 2007, a career spanning 37 years. Mr. Watt performed several times as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta and several orchestras in the Los Angeles area as well as the Oakland Symphony performing the Richard Strauss Second Horn Concerto While a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Mr. Watt has performed with principal and guest conductors that included: Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Eric Leinsdrof, Carla Maria Giulini, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Henry Lewis, James De Priest, Michael Tilson Thomas, Herbert Blumstedt, Andre Previn, Marin Alsop, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Christoph Von Dohnányi. Included among the many world renown artists he has performed with were: Yo-Yo Ma, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Wynton Marsalias, Henry Mancini, Gladys Night, Isaac Hayes, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Barry White, Rihanna, Paula Abdul, Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin, The Carpenters, Benny Carter, Quincy Jones, Bon Jovi, Elton John and film composer, John Williams. He has played on film scores of: Spiderman II, Rush Hour, Mission Impossible, Spike Lee's “Miracle at St. Anna, Golf and many others. Mr. Watt has played the music for the Twentieth Century Fox cartoons, The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and King of the Hill for the past three years. He played on the five hour TV special “The Jacksons, an American Family” under Harold Wheeler, and played for several years for the TV program “Startrek Voyager.” In the late 80's Mr. Watt helped organize an African American Brass Quintet, “The New Brass Ensemble” which performed throughout the United States and abroad. Mr. Watt has done public speaking lecturing on music and African history in the Los Angeles area. He was hired as guest professor at Los Angele City College teaching the course, “Music of Black Americans”. Recently Mr. Watt executive produced a short film in memory of his friend Miles Davis. The film is based on the musical composition “Missing Miles” by Todd Cochran, commissioned by Mr. Watt, for French horn and piano. The short film was chosen by the Pan African Film Festival and the Garden State Film Festival. Mr. Watt is a licensed airplane pilot with an instrument rating. He is a saber fencer and he speaks German and Italian.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Music Superstar Jackie Evancho About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Jackie Evancho, is a highly popular and beloved singer-songwriter who became a worldwide sensation at the age of 10 years old when she dazzled television audiences in 2010 with her beautiful, angelic voice, on Season 5 of America's Got Talent. Since then, she's had a phenomenal multi-gold and platinum career, with 9 studio albums, 8 of which went to number 1, 3 number 1 live albums and DVDs, 30 top 20 singles, 3 highly acclaimed PBS concert specials, and 3 EPs, including her latest EP just released, entitled “Solla”. She's performed with some of the biggest names in music including David Foster, Placido Domingo, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and many more. She has had many firsts in her spectacular career. She was the youngest top-10 debut artist in US history, as well as being the youngest top-5 debut artist in the history of the UK, and she holds the record for being the youngest platinum selling solo recording artist in history. Her albums have been on the Billboard Charts for a cumulative total of more than 500 weeks. She's performed at the top concert venues in the world, and she is also the youngest person ever to give a solo concert at Lincoln Center in New York City. And now, at the age of 24, our guest has moved well beyond her life as a child prodigy, and has evolved into a mature singer-songwriter, expressing her unique brand of creativity and artistry by telling her truth musically, most recently by collaborating with Smash Mouth's founding member and principal songwriter, Greg Camp, who produced her most recent EP, “Solla”. Throughout her career, music critics from around the world have been falling over themselves searching for the appropriate superlatives to describe our guest's amazing voice, using words like “magical”, “miraculous”, “flawless”, “celestial”, “superhuman”, “angelic”, but I think Gia Tolentino of The New Yorker magazine said it best when she described our guest's voice as “supernaturally blissful”. Reflecting on a storied career that catalyzed Rowan Atkinson's rise with the unforgettable schoolmaster sketch, Sparks echoes Chekhov in celebrating the unique synergy between writer and actor. He reminisces about the golden age of British comedy, his camaraderie with Douglas Adams, and the undying quest for originality in storytelling. I loved talking portfolio careers with Tim - he's right down in the weeds of how you build a thriving life as a creator, a performer, an arts manager - how you take care of yourself both inside and out, and how you get things done when there are a million things pulling at you. Irwin Michnick, the Brooklyn-born son of a Jewish furrier from Ukraine, was a jazz musician who wrote radio commercials and advertising jingles for companies like L & M cigarettes and Ken-L Ration dog food.Bob Levenson was a copywriter at Doyle Dane Bernbach who needed a tune to go with the words, “Everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Sara Lee.” Irwin Michnick got the call. But it was a different call that led to Irwin Michnik winning a Tony Award and the Contemporary Classics Award from the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Placido Domingo, and more than 70 other superstars of music have recorded the song that Michnik wrote.Josh Groban included it on his 2020 album, Harmony.Aretha Franklin sang it at the funeral of civil rights activist Rosa Parks.Senator Edward Kennedy asked that it be sung at his funeral, as well. And it was.The song teaches us that passion does not create commitment, but that commitment creates passion. It is a song that teaches us that we can achieve the miraculous only if we are willing to attempt the ridiculous.Do you remember the Ze Frank quote I shared with you last week? The one where Ze talks about how the hero throws himself into battle against impossible odds, fiercely pushing, shoulders back, despite the knowledge that he can't win, that he will die in the end?Irwin Michnik wrote the music and Joe Darion wrote the words. It is the theme song of Wizard Academy, that school for entrepreneurs and ad writers and educators and ministers and researchers and every other agent-of-change who has become infected with an impossible dream.Do you remember the song now? Of course you do. It starts like this, “To dream the impossible dream; to fight the unbeatable foe; to bear with unbearable sorrow; to run where the brave dare not go.”You probably don't remember Irwin Michnik because he was known professionally as Mitch. Mitch Leigh.I'll bet you can guess what Indy Beagle has for you in the rabbit hole.In other news about impossible dreams, last week I bought an extremely old copy of the book Miguel de Cervantes wrote that inspired the song by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion.Perhaps I'll tell you about it after the beginning of the year.Ciao for Niao,Roy H. WilliamsGood business ideas often die on the vine because of the cost and logistics of bringing those ideas into reality. Uzair Ahmed saw all these missed opportunities, so he figured figured out how to use technology and automation to make these good business ideas come alive. Uzair tested a high-tech, low-overhead system to launch a business that provides on-site car repairs. Guess what? It succeeded wildly. Now, Uzair tells roving reporter Rotbart, he can help other businesses cut their costs up to 60% by following his model. And this also reduces the number of hours a business owner has to spend at work. We've struck the match and lit the fuse. If you want to see the fireworks, hurry over to MondayMorningRadio.com
Richard Sparks from "Merry ol' England" has experienced tremendous success in the entertainment business, having worked with such luminaries as Placido Domingo, Rowan Atkinson and the inimitable John Cleese of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers fame. Richard got his big break as a writer on "Not The Nine O'clock News", an irreverent take on the days affairs that featured anchors broadcasting from bed and the unique talents of Rowan Atkinson. One of Richard's biggest claims to fame is as the author of Atkinson's famous "Schoolmaster" routine, in which the future Mr. Beane puts a hilarious spin on attendance taking and dsicipline. As satisfying as his career was, Richard always had an itch to scratch as a fantasy fiction writer. Buoyed by his night time hobby of online gaming, his latest novel "New Rock New Role" hits the market later this year, just in time for the holidays. Who is Kirk Yano? We’re about to find out on this episode of TWiRT! Kirk Yano is a multiple Grammy-winning recording engineer with well over 30 Platinum and Gold records. He has won three Grammys including a Grammy for the last album that Miles Davis recorded. He has worked with Public Enemy, Mariah Carey, Miles Davis, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Placido Domingo and Phoebe Snow, and has toured as a musician with Snow, Savoy Brown, Scott Holt and Texas Scratch. Kirk was the recording engineer for “Fight the Power’ by Public Enemy which Billboard magazine still lists as one of the most influential recordings. He was also the engineer on Mariah Carey’s Christmas Album and her Jewel Box album and he worked on History by Michael Jackson. We'll hear about Kirk Yano's first visit to Nashville and his early association with Steve Church and Frank Foti. And even how Steve Church sometimes stayed at the "Yano Arms Hostel" (my name for it) in NYC in Steve's early phone hybrid days. Plus we'll hear about WMMS remotes that Kirk worked on with Frank in the late 1970's. Finally, we'll understand part of the reason that music started to get really processed in the early 2000's, and how Kirk worked to mitigate the craziness in the music industry, or at least turn it into something musical and useful. Also, what about the production transition from multitrack tape and mixing consoles to digital DAW production? We were also recently banned from PentagonPal as well as had podcasts removed from Spotify. Steven Mosher explains how China invented totalitarianism through the ancient school of thought known as Legalism which argues that all power ought to be concentrated in the hands of the state. After the Warring States period China was consolidated into the state of Qin (China) which sought to control important elements of the economy, form propaganda teams to control the thoughts of the people (brainwashing), and create concentration camps. China has been run in totalitarian fashion ever since. Chinese communism is just another version of ancient bureaucratic totalitarianism. Confucianism covered the iron scaffolding of totalitarianism. He doesn't consider Russia to be a threat, rather part of the West, though the West is pushing it into the arms of Beijing which can create a Eurasian superpower. His upcoming book (Politically Incorrect Guide to Pandemics) deals with his thoughts on how he thinks the coronavirus is a Chinese gain-of-function bioweapon. He believes China is perfecting a social credit system and that the pandemic was used to get us to accept such a system. He sees the CCP's lockdowns as an expression of a larger drive for total control and discusses the Taiwan situation. *Support Geopolitics & Empire: Donate https://geopoliticsandempire.com/dona...
