Vahn Black is a vocalist based in Atlanta, and in this episode we focused on her project celebrating Gladys Bentley, including Vahn's fantastic  album Petrichor. Born and raised in Detroit, Vahn  grew up in a melting pot of music and this aided her in cultivating her soul-charged, jazz infused sound, marrying her reverence for vocalists like Sarah Vaughn with her love of producers like J Dilla. We talked about her musical education, her career path,  her research into Black history and culture, her joy of collecting vinyl and some of her other creative outlets. It was interesting to hear about her contrasting experiences with work, life and music in Detroit, New York and Atlanta.  As a composer Black has lent her artistry to various art mediums from short films to interactive performance art. In 2023 she was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta, and for those listeners who are fans of Vahn Black and those who are discovering her, I hope you'll enjoy this conversation which is punctuated with her music. In Epi 9, world class jazz musician John Clayton and podcast host E.B. Moss reminisce about a friendship launched with a prank, before seriously discussing the Grammy-winning arranger/composer/bassist's techniques, and experiences across a life in the music industry. From his serendipitous introduction to the bass, mentorship under Ray Brown, journey with musicians from Dee Dee Bridgewater to Diana Krall, Oscar Peterson to Monty Alexander. it's quite a living. Learn how John approaches composing and performing... his passion for blending flavors in music arrangements, to how drummer Jeff Hamilton, with whom he co-founded the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, introduced him to the blends of fine wine! It's like fly-on-the-wall eavesdropping on a close friendship -- filled with laughter...and a master class in both music and living quite the life.Clayton's early fascination with the bass, initiated at age 13 and cemented by a Ray Brown solo he heard, led him to a fruitful career, from playing in the Count Basie Orchestra, to collaborating with or composing for icons such as Paul McCartney, Nancy Wilson, Queen Latifah. Regina Carter, and even a recent release with 89-year-old sax legend, Houston Person, and scores more. (John even composed the theme song for "Insider Interviews with E.B. Moss!) Clayton shares anecdotes from his life his philosophies on jazz, and the role of an artist in presenting their work to an audience. He stresses the importance of expression over performing for audience expectations, citing experiences and insights from his expansive career in the music industry. Through this spontaneous and engaging chat, Clayton's passion for jazz and his respect for its power to connect and communicate shine brightly, offering listeners a unique glimpse into the life of a truly remarkable musician. If you catch this on YouTube, watch for archival images, and don't miss the little  reaction at the end from a gobsmacked studio engineer capturing a solo from John's session with Houston....  Find/Follow "It's Quite a Living" everywhere including YouTube Twitter @QuiteALiving Instagram: @QuiteALivingPodcast Find Moss Appeal on LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/MossAppeal And if you want to support the arts and keep this free podcast — and Insider Interviews Podcast — going, please consider “buying me a coffee” of ANY size!: https://buymeacoffee.com/mossappeal

His Awesome  LITTLE ANTHONY & THE MUSIC — AN ANTHOLOGY includes New Music & Classic Tunes. He Tours in concert in 2023My Grand Folks & Family always had the Rock n Roll/Soul Classics playing  when I went to Reunions & around the House during my Childhood. I consider this a GIFT!!  I ALSO get the gift of Interviewing one of my Favorites: Little Anthony!!Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee “Little Anthony” Gourdine is without question one of the most celebrated vocalists in the annals of popular music. His tender yet explosive delivery of a musical phrase leaves audiences spellbound with an impression so indelible that casual listeners never forget the ‘voice' or the tunes he immortalized. These songs consistently emanate from airwaves and are often lauded in music journals worldwide. Songs such as “Goin' Out Of My Head,” “I'm On The Outside Looking In,” “Hurt So Bad,” and “Take Me Back,” are simply four of a compendium of platinum hits performed by the extraordinarily gifted performer on national television and heard on classic and Top-40 radio spanning numerous decades. His latest blockbuster release is no will-o'-the-wisp, stab in the dark recording; it is a well-thought-out and substantive diary of songs, including many covers bearing his unmistakable vocal imprint. Producer Michael Miller spared no effort in tirelessly orchestrating a project that promises an enduring shelf-life titled LITTLE ANTHONY & THE MUSIC — AN ANTHOLOGY. Songs include the classics “A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening, ”Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” “What A Difference A Day Makes,” and “Who's Sorry Now.” Forty memorable selections should keep you and your significant other reminiscing for some time to come. Despite many of the songs being standards, you'll notice his articulate style blessing each track. Consider the infusive single and premier release "New York State of Mind." While some scratch their heads in wonderment upon hearing this cover for the first time, thinking: "That voice is familiar." And after a slight pause, like a ton of bricks it hits them: "That's Little Anthony!" For sure. And then they go on praising his vocal acumen, deservedly so. His R&B-laced rendering of "New York State of Mind" is a divergence from the perennial recording and sports an infectious 42nd Street vibe. It's performed so well that composer Billy Joel is likely to tip his hat. A popular legend recently said: "The Man's still got it!" “Little Anthony” Gourdine has brightened many a day for aficionados of ‘God's musical gift to mankind' everywhere with indescribably beautiful music that fills our hearts with Joy! .............. https://www.harmonystreet.biz/                                                           Phil C. Growing up in a Harlem tenement perched above a record store, the Anel Sisters spent their Saturday “cleaning days” listening to albums and 45's bought from their chore allowance. Barbara and Lili developed an early love of music from their mother, who exposed them to eclectic playlists' ranging from Afro-Cuban jazz, Sarah Vaughn, Tchaikovsky, to Dizzy Gillespie. A trip to see “The Sound of Music”, inspired Barbara to transpose music from the film on the piano. The twins were encouraged by their grandparents to follow their own artistic paths, Barbara was gifted her first piano, from her grandmother. Lili's grandfather gave her a white toy guitar; dressed to the nines he with would sneak into Mass to hear her sing in choir, a voice he could hear above the others. The sisters took divergent paths. After studying at the Eddie Simon Guitar school and the Shelia Jordan workshop, Lili jumped headfirst into the Greenwich Village music scene and went on to record the first of her nine albums. Barbara graduated with honors from C.C.N.Y with a degree in music and , after seeing the devastating realities from her sisters struggles in the music industry, she chose a career in law enforcement allowing her to compose and create music on her own terms.  Join these master composers, songwriters, and performers as they share their lives, adversities, and challenges overcome, with heart, laughter, and graceful honesty. In the bleak aftermath of unspeakable tragedy, it is faith that dawns as our beacon of survival and healing. Faith, by its very nature, is about trust, hope, and a belief that God is in control. It allows us to seek solace and strength in something greater than ourselves, and it provides a comforting balm for our wounded hearts. Both of our guests this week faced heartbreaking circumstances that could have shaken their faith beyond repair, but each of them chose to wait and see what God would do in their lives as they healed from their scars and faced a new way of living through their pain.   Nicole Avant is an author and film producer who grew up around the music business. Her father, Clarence Avant, was known as the Godfather of Black Music, and as an executive in the music business, he furthered the careers of jazz legends like Sarah Vaughn and Jimmy Smith, and was a sought after mentor for artists like Jamie Foxx, David Geffen, Whitney Houston, and others. Nicole's family life was steeped in music and in faith. It was the faith she would cling to when tragedy struck twice—first, the devastating loss of her mother to the hands of a gunman who invaded their home, and then, the loss of her father shortly after. Author and speaker Gary Miracle unexpectedly found himself on his deathbed in the emergency room, with a 1.7% chance to survive the night. A series of small miracles lined up, and though he ultimately lost all four limbs, Gary's life was spared, inspiring MercyMe's hit song, “Say I Won't.”    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: The Beathard family Upcoming interview: Rachael Lampa Operation Christmas Child   Nicole Avant Clarence Avant Sarah Vaughn  Jimmy Smith Jamie Foxx David Geffen Whitney Houston Bill Withers “Lean On Me” Philippians 1:11 NIV Think You'll Be Happy: Moving Through Grief with Grit, Grace, and Gratitude   Gary Miracle  “Say I Won't” septic shock  ECMO machine Depression www.garymiracle.com No More Bad Days   Interview Quotes: “If I need to understand myself, I always go to a song.” - Nicole Avant  “I always go back to the music because you don't feel alone. You never feel alone.” - Nicole Avant  “The first scripture that my mom made me memorize was Philippians 1:11, ‘May you always be doing those good, kind things which show that you are a child of God, for this will bring much praise and glory to the Lord.' And that was kind of my mantra.” - Nicole Avant “My faith was everything to me during the experience [of losing my mother]. It does not take the pain away, but it does help you move through the pain. I was taking it day by day, and then it became, ‘Oh, Lord, minute by minute, minute by minute, give me today.'” - Nicole Avant “Something that took me years to learn, but I'm grateful that I learned it before this [tragedy], is forgiveness really has nothing to do with condonement.” - Nicole Avant  “What a beautiful thing that you could change your thinking and you could use your imagination. And if you use it wisely and ask for help from the divine, you're going to be okay.” - Nicole Avant “I want to spend my whole life telling people that God is good and begging people to believe that God is good and convincing people of that, and then when something traumatic happens to me, still living my life like He is really, really good.” - Gary Miracle  “I want to fight for life. I want to learn what it means to live and not just be alive.” - Gary Miracle “I'm still here and I'm still alive and I'm still present, and now I get to gladly say that I am in prosthetic legs and God's grace has been so sufficient and so good for me through this season.” - Gary Miracle  “I get to say that there were only setbacks in my life because I thought they were setbacks in that moment, but looking back, they weren't setbacks at all. Christ was still working out my story and I just wanted it to be a lot faster and happen sooner than He wanted it to. So I had what I call setbacks, but Christ calls them next steps.“ - Gary Miracle “Be vulnerable enough to tell just one person who you really are, because what I've learned right now in my life is through the sharing of my struggles, both visible and invisible, I've never been more loved in my entire life when I thought I would be judged for all of that.” - Gary Miracle “I believe that there is going to be a day that I am going to be running down the streets of gold with my brand new legs, with my son Ellis, side by side, and I can't wait to meet him and I can't wait to be there. And I can't wait to meet all of you all there as well. So join me in chasing Jesus.” - Gary Miracle  ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
