At 3 a.m. in the lambing shed on his farm in the Irish midlands, John Connell speaks gently to a ewe in labor. “The wave of willful force doesn't work,” he says. “It's about calm and serene and speaking gently, and that's generally how the thing gets accomplished, certainly on our farm.” An award-winning author, investigative journalist, and organic farmer, John has spent over a decade working with sheep. “They're very caring, look after each other, and are more intelligent than we think,” he says. “But they can be vulnerable. If they get sick, they don't have as big of a fight in them as, say, a cow would.” And yet, John has come to admire their quiet bravery. “I think if people would spend a little time getting to know sheep, they'd realize there's more to them than they might first comprehend.”   For the Fourth Sunday of Easter in Year C, John reflects on the Gospel's message of Jesus as a shepherd, who knows his sheep intimately and cares for them with great love. We invited him to Preach as part of our Culture of Encounter series, inspired by Pope Francis' call to engage with people today—the real people we hear about in the Scriptures—rather than simply engaging with ideas. “He was the pope that spoke to me most directly,” John says. “And I feel lucky that I got to become aware of his work while learning about farming.” Ricardo asks John what he hears Jesus saying to him when he reads, “My sheep hear my voice.” For John, Jesus is saying: “I totally understand who you are, and I want you in this flock.” That intimacy shapes his writing—and how he invites preachers to write: with heart, clarity, and “one true sentence” at a time. John's new book, The Lambing Season, explores the rhythms and realities of raising livestock, as well as the profound spiritual guidance John gleaned from a simple flock of sheep.  Zac, Ashley and John discuss:  - How John's spiritual awakening on a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain led to his transformation from journalist and world traveler to shepherd on his family's farm  - John's discovery of the spiritual and therapeutic power of lambing season in Ireland - The contrast and balance between rural and urban life, and the need for citydwellers to “make appointments with nature” In Signs of the Times, Zac and Ashley discuss the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after a fire in 2019, Pope Francis' latest consistory that created 21 new cardinals on Saturday, Dec. 7, and how the Loyola Chicago Ramblers recovered after (seemingly) snubbing their very own Sister Jean from a celebratory fist bump after their win against Eastern Michigan.  Links for further reading:  The Lambing Season: Stories of Life on an Irish Family Farm The Cow Book: A Story of Life on an Irish Family Farm Pomp and presidents at the reopening of Notre Dame in Paris Podcast: Pope Francis creates 21 cardinals, calls for an end to U.S. death penalty Read: Pope Francis' homily and message to new cardinals A busy weekend for Pope Francis: The Immaculate Conception, a consistory and prayers for death row inmates in the United States You can follow us on X and on Instagram @jesuiticalshow.   You can find us on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/jesuitical.  Please consider supporting Jesuitical by becoming a digital subscriber to America Media at americamagazine.org/subscribe Learn more about your ad choices. John Connell traveled far from Ireland in his 20s, and early in his career, his work yielded accolades in journalism and filmmaking. Yet happiness and contentment proved to be elusive. Returning to the family farm in Longford, one of Ireland's heartland counties, provided a restorative space to pursue a career as an author. Three books followed, notably The Cow Book, which achieved critical acclaim; despite those successes, the way forward became unclear until an extended trip on the Camino de Santiago revealed the possibilities of another project that added deeper meaning to his life.Join cohosts John Lee and Martin Nutty as they talk with John Connell about his latest book, The Lambing Season, and how life as a shepherd revealed new truths and understanding of what it takes to live well.LinksSocial MediaFacebookInstagramLinkedInTwitter/XBooksThe Lambing SeasonThe Cow Book (The Farmer's Son)The Running BookThe Stream of EverythingSeamus PlugConor Hammersley

Host: Duo Dickinson Wednesday October 16, 2024, 12 Noon WPKN 89.5FM www.wpkn.org A century of top-down architectural determination is over. Regimes of conferring worth via station and prestige have been replaced with the number of “likes” and “followers” accruing as if the entire world is one polling station. We have reached intellectual democratization, where popularity trumps insights (good or bad) – our world is becoming unending popularity contests and beauty pageants, where everyone is the judge and the contestant – “the most eyeballs wins”. So much so that the remaining organizations are trying to ban Tik Tok, control Artificial Intelligence and social media and limit access based on age. But the cow has left the barn. As a result, in architecture, the Starchitect, the image of the Power of Style has left the building. All media is losing its editorial guardrails as the internet's overwhelming universal, free and open access to exposing every and any aspect of everyone's life becomes the basis of cultural evolution. The elitist sensibility of anointing “important work” in controlled, highly exclusive journalistic exposure of architecture is collapsing. Popular culture critic Kate Wagner voiced the power of democratic revolution in media: “We all live in the world. We all deserve to participate in it. We all also deserve to see our own lives reflected in architectural media, not just the spaces of the rich and famous. That requires reshaping everything, even vernacular or popular design media culture.” Today we have two people who know the past, present and perhaps can see a future for architecture. Martin Pedersen is a New Orleans based writer, critic and editor, and is the executive director of the Common Edge Collaborative. John Connell is the co – founder of Yestermorrow, an Architect and Urbanist.

I was joined by John Connell, Bill Roach, James Lindsay, Jon Benzinger, and Andy Woodard as we delved into an intriguing discussion. Their focus was on understanding the mechanisms behind the rise of reflexive movements within the church, such as the Neo-Marxist Woke Church movement on the fringe left (Marcusians) and the reactionary Christian Nationalism movement on the cringe right (Schmittians). These movements, they argued, possess the ability to gain momentum and insidiously seize control of the church, acting as parasitic forces that disrupt and dismantle previously united groups. In both situations, entryism was the primary strategy employed by both external and internal agitating forces. -Michael O'Fallon https://sovereignnations.com Support Sovereign Nations: https://paypal.me/sovnations https://patreon.com/sovnations Follow Sovereign Nations: https://sovereignnations.com/subscribe/ © 2023 Sovereign Nations. With Liberty & Justice For All, Session 11 In the founding of this nation, deists and Christians came together on one issue in particular: Religious faith is not an issue that the state has any business dictating. I believe that with all my heart. Let me tell you something else I believe – no man or prince or church or any form of centralized power has any business telling anyone what they can and can't believe. Whether deists or Christians, the founders of this nation had the wisdom to put it in writing that the government had to steer clear of telling Christians and/or the church what they can or cannot do or what they can or cannot believe. Unbelievably, there are now those who actually want to establish the United States as a Christian nation with power concentrated in one person. Are you kidding me? Never mind the logistical nightmare with a monster of that size; consider the history of such attempts. I am compelled to ask the Christian nationalists this question: Are you trying to run my life? This stunning book is a meditation on the simple beauty of nature and a celebration of the slow pace of rural living especially in counties like Longford.John published the bestseller The Cow Book in 2018 which is a memoir of his return to his family's farm in Longford after many years in Australia. Then he wrote The Running Book about his love of running but also the rich colonial history of Longford.Longford recently made national attention in the tourism industry when Center Parcs set up Ireland's largest tourist attraction with over 100 activities on offer for up to 2,500 guests in luxurious guest lodges on-site at Newcastle woods. But there are many more attractions and activities in the county for tourists including the Royal Canal Greenway from Clondra to Dublin, which is the longest linear greenway in Ireland. The National Famine Way from Strokestown is also a great trail in Longford for walkers. For history buffs there is the Corlea Trackway Visitors Centre in Kenagh, which is home to an ancient Iron Age bog road which dates back to 148BC. Then there is also the Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre in Granard which is a Norman Ireland interactive visitors centre adjacent to Ireland's tallest motte. Another great place to visit is the Maria Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown which located in the old schoolhouse in the town. The centre tells the story of one of Ireland's leading female writers and is home to many original artifacts from the 18th century Longford is part of the Hidden Heartland brand and for more information on what makes Longford so special please click on https://www.longford.ie/en/see-do. John Connell's book, tells the story of his journey as he attempts to canoe down his local river during lockdown and let all of his regrets float out to sea. Both books suck you in from the first page. Both books couldn't be more different. Both books are my recommendations for this month. In the extended cut I get to ask them both about the work that went into creating these books, the reaction they have received and we even get an exclusive extract reading from John.  To access the full interview visit Patreon.com/irishmanabroad - for a small monthly fee you can support the creation of the podcast and gain access to every Irishman Abroad podcast created since 2013.   Want to submit a question or suggest a guest?  1. Part memoir, part essay, John Connell's latest memoir The Running Book explores what it is to be alive and what movement can do for a person. It is deeply intimate and wide-ranging, local and global: Connell is as likely to write about colonialism and the effect of British imperialism in Ireland and its former colonies as he is about life on his family farm in Ballinalee, County Longford. Told in 42 chapters, each another kilometre in the 42.2k race, the whole book is 42,000 words long and it captures what it is to undertake a marathon moment by moment, in body and mind. Above all, The Running Book is a book about the nature of happiness and how for one man it came through the feet. (Pan Macmillan)John spoke to Jack Aldane from his farm in Birchview, County Longford. He is looking forward to sushi at Yamamori in Dublin when lockdown ends in Ireland (https://yamamori.ie/). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's our very first Longford special, and it won't be our last. John Connell is, amongst other things, an author and he's also from Longford and I'm from Longford. So we had a bit of a Longford love in. Not really but I did love chatting to him about his new book The Running Book. We touched on quite a few topics including running, therapy, stress, Hitler, Moby and much much more. I could have chatted to John all day and I think you'll really enjoy this one!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-keith-walsh-podcast. Hosted on Acast.
