Alexis Normand is the Co-founder & CEO of Greenly, a carbon accounting and management platform enabling companies to measure and reduce their emissionsCarbon accounting has grown from a niche practice only a few years ago to a widely adopted business practice with 18,700 public companies now disclosing their emissionsBy measuring their emissions, companies can then define climate targets with ~2,200 companies having set a net zero science-based target to date, a number that has grown exponentially over the last yearsYet, much remains to be done with 17,000 public companies still failing to disclose their emissions and - while science-based target set a high bar for climate ambition - greenwashing and dubious climate claims remain rampant in the corporate worldLaunched less than 4 years ago in Paris, Greenly aims to democratize carbon measurement to enable companies of all size to measure their impact and take climate action. Greenly has already convinced 1,000 customers across Europe and the US, from one-person shops to large companies such as banking giant BNP Paribas. In this episode, we talk with Alexis about:how Alexis' interest in technology and tracking health data brought him to carbon accountinghow can we measure carbon emissions from company's datawhich climate commitments can corporates take and what is the difference between carbon neutrality and net zero science-based targetshow can Greenly software platform scale to companies of all sizes globally and become a standard like any financial accounting system but for carbonEnjoy the show!To learn more about carbon accounting and emission reduction:The Net-Zero standard for Corporates (report, ~65 pages)Energy: A beginner's guide, Vaclav Smil (book)How to avoid a climate disaster, Bill Gates (book)Speed & Scale, an action plan for solving our climate crisis, John Doer (book)Drawdown: the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming, Paul Hawken (book)World without end, Jean-Marc Jancovici (comics)

These 5 Questions

Just recently listened to a book written by Silicon Valley icon John Doer. The book is filled with incredible nuggets of wisdom that are applicable to anybody who happens to be in the business world, part of a team or really just breathing... In a section of the book, he talks about an internal study of 180 teams that Google used to measure performance. Very simply, there was a direct correlation between overall team success and the number of affirmative responses to these 5 questions: Structure & Clarity - Are goals, roles & execution plans on our team clear? Psychological Safety - Can we take risks without feeling insecure or embarrassed? What's the meaning of our work - Are we working on something that's personally important to each of us? Dependability - Can we count on each other to do high quality work on time? Impact - Do we fundamentally believe that we are doing work that matters?  Ironically, the name of the study was “Project Aristotle” that I assume was named after the famed ancient Greek philosopher we gave love to in Friday's Daily Hustle… Of course it was Aristotle that once said, “The whole is more than the sum of the parts.” All we got to do to figure out if that is true in our lives and on our team is answer these 5 questions... Good luck

Jason Jay is a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and Director of the Sustainability Initiative at MIT Sloan.   He teaches courses on leadership, strategy, and innovation for sustainable business. Jason engages students and alumni in hands-on projects with leading companies and organizations. These efforts help build a community of innovators for sustainability that includes MIT students and alumni, faculty and researchers, with partners in business, government, NGOs, and hybrid organizations.  Jason’s research focuses on how people navigate the tensions inherent in the quest for sustainability, as they simultaneously pursue their own self-interest and the flourishing of human and other life. This work includes deep case studies of cross-sectoral collaboration and hybrid organizations that combine social and business goals. These case studies have been published in the Academy of Management Journal and California Management Review. He also contributes to the MIT Sloan Management Review, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and Greenbiz on the topic of sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI). A key finding of his research is that social innovation occurs through authentic conversations that hold the tension between divergent values and perspectives. With Gabriel Grant, he is the author of Breaking Through Gridlock: The Power of Conversation in a Polarized World. In this episode, the following topics are discussed: S-Lab — MBA students learn about sustainable business practice Research and teaching initiative — MIT Sloan now teaches sustainability and has up to 95% engagement from business students Challenges from the past decade as a satiability advocate Some people dismiss environmental and social challenges Are there tradeoffs to align with sustainability? From there, he started the industry's first crossover fund with John Doer, investing in both late-stage venture capital and public market securities. In March of 2000, he co-founded private equity firm Silver Lake Partners in anticipation of the tech bust and, in 2004, founded Elevation Partners where he would become one of the first investors in Facebook and other nascent tech stars.
