The Business Elevation Show with Chris Cooper - Be More. Achieve More
Be it coaching an executive, coaching a manager, or coaching a team, there's no mistaking that coaching is an essential path to human and leadership growth. But not all coaching is equal, and not all coaches are alike. Whether someone is being coached for development or for performance, the need for good and diverse styles of coaching is more vital than ever. The discipline of coaching revels in its complexity. It resides at the confluence of many streams of enquiry—mindfulness, psychology, leadership theory, peak performance research, to name a few. One field of human endeavor largely ignored in the teaching of coaching is that of the Arts and the Humanities. Owen Ó Súilleabháin is an artist who works in the world of organizational leadership and has recently teamed up with a great elder of the coaching community John Schuster to provide a virtual sandbox for coaches to come and play – an experience designed to foster, encourage and share – coaches with coaches – how the Arts have influenced them as people and professionals – how they use the arts to renew themselves and to enrich the client experience.

On today's episode we had the pleasure of having Gold Medal Olympian and American Curler John Landsteiner on the show with us. John jokingly talks about how he slowly transitioned from religion classes to full time Curling at the age of 8. And how he became known as "The Ringer" on his fathers Curling Club Team as a young kid. How when he got to college in Duluth he hit an age where he had to go Pro. And then his amazing ride to two olympics, One Gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Bronze Medal at Basel, and 4 US Men's Championships. The interesting story about how John's teammate John Schuster was dropped from the United States Curling Association High Performance Program and decided to create his own team "The Rejects" which included fellow HPP cut Matt Hamilton, John Landsteiner who they convinced to come out of retirement and Tyler George who couldn't attend the HPP combine due to work. The cool part of this story is The Rejects dusted both HPP teams in the 2015 National Championships and then were added to the High Performance Program in 2016. Then 2018 Winter Olympics when they brought USA home the first ever Gold Medal in the sport of Curling. John discusses what the olympics experience was like and he could see why single athletes would love it. As well as being on talk shows and touring the USA, kissing babies and shaking hands. Oh and that time he lost his Ring (the one that goes with his Gold Medal) on the beach in California when he went on a late night swim with the boys. And how a man on the beach randomly found it and returned it back to him 2 weeks later. Very cool story. A must listen!

Our past… what’s it got to do with our wellbeing and life success? For some… not much, According to Eckhart Tolle, “If you delve into the past, it becomes a bottomless pit.”While the Buddha preached, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”What about the ways we handle our own past? Do we ignore, numb, romanticize or demonize our pasts? As much as there is power in the present, would it be helpful to reflect deeply into the rich landscapes of our past? In the opinion of John Schuster, business coach, the past is rich in possibility to find out who we are while activating our valuable and unique untapped potential. With those in hand, we can chart our own life-fulfilling course through the highly suggestible waters of our world’s influences. To me, this is crucial to an empowered, fulfilling and healthy life.Come join John and I as we discuss his very useful guide into Repossibilitizing (John’s word, that I looooove) yourself through your past.

Rev. Kevin Ross is joined by John Schuster, "The Leaders' Mentor" and author of The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling, Recasting, and Reclaiming. Listen as John helps us consider new ways to grow and become our best selves by understanding our past. "We all have pasts, and one of life‘s secret commands is for each of us to use our individual set of yesterdays well. Using our pasts creatively and well is a secret because no one tells us how important this life task is for our futures—no one ever told me anyway, and I suspect not you." Join us for what is surely to be an intriguing hour on Design Your Life! You won't want to miss it!
John Schuster's new book, The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling, Reclaiming and Recasting, is in sharp contrast to “nowness” philosophers who argue that our past has little value. It has great value, but we don't use it well. Schuster shows the many ways we ignore, distort or become captive to our pasts, and explains how we can tap into this treasure trove of wisdom by revisiting and reframing our experiences.
