Greetings, cave dwellers and retro gaming enthusiasts! Prepare to be transported back to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and pixelated graphics were cutting-edge technology. This episode of Play Comics is about to take you on a wild ride through the prehistoric world of BC's Quest for Tires and its bone-rattling sequel, BC II: Grog's Revenge. These ColecoVision gems, inspired by Johnny Hart's iconic newspaper strip BC, will have you pedaling your stone-wheeled unicycle faster than a Brontosaurus can say “Bronto-burger!” But wait, don't touch that dial (or scroll away from that podcast app)! We've got a special guest joining us on this Paleolithic adventure. It's none other than DC Dave from The Monitor Tapes, who's temporarily abandoned his own era to help us navigate through these Stone Age sidescrollers. Will we uncover the secrets of fire? Invent the wheel? Or just end up with calluses from furiously mashing those ColecoVision controller buttons? From dodging lava pits to outsmarting saber-toothed tigers, we'll explore every crevice and cave of these classic games. We might even answer burning questions like: “How does one steer a unicycle with square wheels?” and “Is collecting clams really the best use of a caveman's time?” So grab your club, don your finest animal print, and join us for an episode that's guaranteed to rock your world more than the invention of sliced mammoth! Learn such things as: Do newspaper comics still exist? How long can a single person continuously make a comic strip? Could be eventually get these old games released again but for phones? And so much more! You can find DC Dave on BlueSky @dcdavepodcast, and of course under his new podcast The Monitor Tapes on BlueSky @themonitortapes. This week's guests, Johnny Hart and Kooks, from Johnny Hart and the Mess, celebrate the history of rock n roll while paving the way for a new era. With influences from across the board, the band has its roots soaked in rock, but wanders off the beaten bath and delves into various veins of music and sound. Most fittingly is the "Alt Rock" nomenclature because it is so broadly defined. At any given point, the band can sound like a pop band, a blues band, a country band, a jam band or a funk band.  Suppose it depends on the day, the night and the crowd. They have shared the stage with Fitz and the Tantrums, Shaed, Grace Potter, The Sheepdogs, Andy Frasco, Neal Francis, Joey Harkum and many more.

You all know the Wizard of Id, right? It's that classic comic by Johnny Hart and Brant Parker that definitely takes up space in the newspaper. Since everyone loves it so much, it might surprise you to know that there were not one but TWO attempted adaptions of this comic, one in cartoon form by Abe Levitow and one in puppet form by Jim Henson. We look at them both.

I read a poem on Facebook on August 9, 2017. I love it and wrote a song using the words. Then I decided to find out from the friend who posted it where she got it since she hadn't given an author's name. Did she write it? Did some famous poet pen the words? The answer she gave blew me away. The words were from Johnny Hart's B.C. comic strip. Wiley, that prehistoric philosopher, spoke them in a strip published on Sunday, September 29, 2002. Fifteen years later, posted on Facebook anonymously, they inspired praise to God. He Is There When no one seems to love you and trouble's everywhere; When skies turn dark above you and joy turns to despair; When everything just falls apart and no one seems to care; Just look down deep inside your heart and know your God is there…He is there! He is there and he loves you when trouble's everywhere. He is there and he loves you in darkness and despair. He is there and he loves you when no one seems to care. Just look down deep inside your heart and know your God is there. 2017 Mike Neifert (Adapted from Johnny Hart's B.C. Comic – Sunday, September 29, 2002)

It's the podcast where Mike (@bitterkarella) and Ethan (@Gtron) discuss animated specials based on newspaper comic strips. This week, we're looking Johnny Hart's BC specials, because, believe it or not, there was a point in time when BC had enough cultural cache that people were willing to watch not just one but TWO terrible specials based on that property. But wait, how can there be a Christmas special when the title explains that it takes place in the BC era? WHAT THE?!?!? I hope someone got fired for that blunder! Music courtesy of @morbiomatic!
