The editors of Reason Magazine recently joined a conversation about whether Libertarians have been mostly right about the big issues of the past twenty years. Since 9/11, Libertarians have opposed the war in Iraq; opposed the occupation of Afghanistan; opposed torture; supported same-sex marriage; supported marijuana legalization; and supported aggressive access to COVID vaccines, even before trials were complete. Why, they wonder, have the Libertarian party and movement had trouble attracting more people... if they've been on the right side of history so often? Critics would argue that Libertarians have been wrong more often than they'll admit. We find out with our guests: Kevin Wilson , host of the "A Free Solution" radio program and former Congressional candidate Lauren Hall , professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at RIT Phil Ricci , former senior advisor for Sharpe for Governor in 2015, media director for the Johnson-Weld campaign in 2016, and former vice chair

On this episode of The Open Mind, we're delighted to welcome Ed Lopez-Reyes to continue our discussion of the national popular vote movement with one of its most important grassroots advocates on the eastern seaboard. A Connecticut-based Republican strategist Lopez is chief consultant of Wolf and King Strategies and served on the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Europe Analytics Center in imagery and counterterrorism from 2002 through 2010. He also served on Utah Governor Jon Huntsman's 2012 New Hampshire presidential primary campaign steering committee and was National Cochairman of Republicans for Johnson-Weld in 2016. A member of the National Guard in Connecticut, Lopez also returned from a month long training in Louisiana.
Alex Merced, Libertarian Party vice chair, takes questions submitted by my private Supporting Listeners group, the Tom Woods Show Elite (https://www.supportinglisteners.com) on topics including the Johnson/Weld ticket, whether the LP should avoid presidential politics altogether, whether there's ever a case for not fielding an LP candidate in a particular election, and a lot more.
Show Summary: So just what is the Mises Caucus, and what is their mission here on earth? Well, this week we talk to a fellow defender of liberty, economic time traveler and vice chair of the Mises Caucus, Luke Ensor! Luke wants to promote Austrian economics into the party and to advocate applying the science of human action—praxeology—in Libertarian Party efforts to counter modern-day Statism, and bring justice to the galaxy! Well, so listen to one of the Defenders of Capitalism, Luke Ensor! About The Guest: Luke Ensor grew up in a Republican household, he saw politics as being important to what happens in life as opposed to sports. Luke had read Heritage and National Review for years; he was also a Romney primary voter in 2012 in PA when the only two choices were Romney and Ron Paul because (among other reasons) he was scared of Iran. Luke had his paradigm shattered with a YouTube trilogy called "Law Without Government", Ensor then stumbled around before finding Larken Rose and the Mises Institute, and he became an anti-political anarchist for a few years, and then he rethought his positions but was not impressed with Johnson/Weld, got more heavily involved in the party after the 2016 election. Luke met Michael Heise through this freedom-oriented club Luke runs, and hit it off pretty well with him and found that they very similar ideologically when he formed the LPMC he texted him asking if I'd help him out and he said: “I'd be honored.” About The Host: Johnny “Rocket” Adams was the creator and host of “The Johnny Rocket Launch Pad – Libertarian Rock n’ Roll Experience” and now “BLAST OFF with Johnny Rocket!” He’s also a musician, graphic artist, author, and former Chief Warrant Officer. Johnny spent his early days earning his stripes as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. Back stateside, Johnny immersed himself in the classic works of Murray Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, and Ludwig von Mises. From there the AnCap known as “Johnny Rocket” was born. Speaking truth to power from your cell phone tower, Johnny digests the philosophy of liberty and brings them to the man on the street on a weekly basis. Johnny Rocket was also the front-man of the rockabilly group “Hot Roddin’ Romeos” and puts pencil to paper with the critically acclaimed comic series “The Liberty Force.” New York Times best-selling author and podcast host Tom Woods calls Johnny Rocket “one of the most entertaining figures in the liberty movement.” About the Co-Host: Raylene Lightheart is an activist in the libertarian movement. She is a dedicated wife and homeschool mom of five. She is passionate about self-ownership, free association community, and unfettered liberty. Raylene is the director of marketing and sales of Launchpad Media Group. She is the assistant communications director for Libertarian Party of Washington State and also serves as Region 3 alternate. She also is on the board of Libertarian Party of Kitsap County and was awarded the 2018 Porcupine Award for LPWA. As a child, Raylene dreamed of being in broadcasting. When Johnny asked her to be the co-host for his new show, Blast Off! With Johnny Rocket she was thrilled to have the opportunity to advance liberty through education, outreach, and entertainment. About Ground Control: Benjamin Wiegold is a fellow Libertarian, from the corrupt state of Illinois. Ben is the new producer, sound engineer, and editor of the Blast Off! With Johnny Rocket. Ben has also done work for the Mises Institute and numerous other publications. Ben is a musician, hardcore anarchist, and just an all-around cool dude! Johnson Weld was the most successful Libertarian presidential campaign in history.. but where do we go from here? What will take it to get people to question their long-held political beliefs, and how can we dismantle the duopoly along the way? In this special behind-the-scenes glimpse of the first-look screening of “I Am Gary Johnson” during the Sundance Film Festival, Jenn charts a course forward with three of the Johnson Weld campaign’s most effective strategists — Field Director Carlos Sierra, Communications Director Joe Hunter, and Northeastern Regional Director Dan Fishman —- and sets the record straight on her controversial decision to attend the event. Stay tuned, and in just one episode, you’ll have the knowledge you need to start advancing Liberty full-time. But that’s not all. Raising money is hard. Raising money for Libertarians is even harder. So how can we use the resources we have today to build a stronger base tomorrow? We should never start asking for money if we can’t explain why we need it, how we’re going to spend it, and how much the things we need are going to cost… but once we’ve got that foundation, where do we go from there? As Development Coordinator for the Libertarian National Committee (and Johnson Weld 2016’s Director of Digital Events), Jess Mears has raised a *lot* of money for Libertarian candidates and affiliates, and in this episode of Leading Liberty, she’s condensed over a dozen campaigns worth of experience into 30 minutes of actionable fundraising strategies for her fellow freedom fighters. So here’s what you’ll learn in this episode of Leading Liberty: 3 insider secrets to help determine how much to ask for before you pick up the phone Where to get the data you need to start the fundraising process 4 elements of a successful, memorable event What roles and skills you need on your campaign fundraising team How to respond when people say they’re not interested The key differences in how to raise money for candidates vs. local affiliates And lots more! Then he made things worse by admitting he needs to "get smarter." It's rare that I find myself running the Gary Johnsons defense. Most of the time I find myself criticizing him, his comments and positions but this morning on Morning Joe, Gary was caught by Mike Barnicle in a gotcha question designed to trip him up. The question succeeded and Gary came off looking foolish. It could have happened to anyone and Gary could have done several things to mitigate the damage. Instead, he made the issue worse by opening his mouth again to reporters. I've got all the clips, and I'll go through all of it with you. This could be the nail that puts the Johnson/Weld coffin on the ground. *** I got an interesting link from a listener about a book claiming algorithms that determine sentencing and mortgage rates are racist. On its face this seems ridiculous but under close inspection, you discover that it is, in fact, ridiculous. I'll give you the whole story today. JasonSupport the show.

Last night Johnson/Weld made their second appearance at a CNN town hall and kudos to CNN for giving them some airtime to present some different views. I don't have much to say about the town hall. There were no standout moments but no big gaffes either. But one thing, in particular, did stand out to me. When asked about the state of the country, Johnson America is doing great, and there's never been a better time to be an American. Now, I understand what he's doing. He wants to be the Ani-Trump and run a positive campaign. I'll also concede the fact that we have a higher standard of living than at any time in our history. But it gets tough to make a case for your candidacy if things are perfect already. In reality, things are far from perfect. There's a major economic storm just over the horizon, and you need to be preparing for it. Today We're going to look a series of concerning economic data that should have you questioning just how great things are. In the end, I just want you to be informed so you can make the best decisions for you and your family. JasonSupport the show.
Yeah, it's crazy election season, and a new poll shows that Harambe, the gorilla shot dead at the Cincinnati Zoo, received 5% of the vote in a three-way matchup against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. With some polls showing the Johnson/Weld ticket polling at 8-10%, the campaign finally has some good news they can spin. Perhaps the headline should read, "Johnson/Weld lead Harambe by 5 Points!" EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it. Mr. Bean and Wild Bill have a commanding lead over a dead monkey. Meanwhile, in the world of what matters, this diabolical duo has failed to make a dent in the campaigns of two of the most unlikable candidates in American history. This, despite a lot of big talk and even an attempt to show Johnson gaining momentum by promoting the polling results from a single district. Libertarians were never going to win this election, but we had a chance of laying the groundwork for years to come. Then we elected two of the most un-inspiring, un-libertarian candidates we could find. Johnson compounded his problems by propping up Weld as his co-president rather than his Vice President. It gives the appearance that neither man could stand as president on his own but together, they just might make one good candidate. People are looking for third options. The LP didn't give them one. It's a shame really. I don't know if we'll get another chance like this in my lifetime. JasonSupport the show.

Today four guests of varying perspectives -- Jeff Deist, Dr. Mary Ruwart, Tom Mullen, and Jason Rink -- join me to discuss the Libertarian Party and the prospects for the Johnson/Weld ticket.
Donald Trump just flipped on gun control. He's now advocating for the restriction of your second amendment rights for merely being under investigation by the government. Listen to me libertarians. A lot of you have been asking me why I can't just get behind "our" candidate. You sue the same silly logic Republicans use. You say things like "He's much closer to your views than Trump or Clinton. Why can't you help the party gain ground?" Why? Because I don't care about party! I care about principle. I have seen too often what happens when we nominate and support candidates who do not hold our fundamental principles sacred. The Right is learning this truth yet again this week as Donald betrays their support by advocation for controls and restriction on our constitutionally protected liberties. http://thelibertarianrepublic.com/donald-trump-just-flipped-on-gun-control/ This is why I don't support a Johnson/Weld presidency. I won't put party above principle. We're in a major fight right now. Not from radical middle eastern terrorism but rather from radical fundamentalists in our own government. Yesterday in Rolling Stone, Drexel University Law Professor David Cohen (who teaches constitutional law by the way) wrote and article calling for the repeal of the second amendment as if removing the rights of lawful citizens to keep and bear arms would somehow prevent bad people from getting guns. FANTASTIC IDEA DAVID! While you're at it why don't you outlaw human trafficking and heroin as well? Moron. But don't think for a second that this is something you need not concern yourself with. This is very serious. Homeland Security Director Jeh Johnson now says gun control is a matter of homeland security. The army is approaching. They are large, heavily armed and if they can disarm you they will. Today on the show I'm going to take apart Cohen and Johson, publicly shaming them for their ignorance and cowardice. You're going to want to hear this. JasonSupport the show.

In today's episode, host Marc Clair welcomes a true “Libertarian Lion”, Michael Pickens!
