In this episode of RaboTalk's Growing Our Future, Katie talks with North Canterbury farmer Ben Ensor, chair of the Hurunui District Landcare Group, about how farmer‑led catchment groups are helping rural communities make environmental change with confidence.Drawing on a decade of hands‑on experience, Ben explains the role of Catchment Communities Aotearoa in connecting more than 200 catchment groups nationwide, sharing knowledge, and giving farmers a stronger collective voice.Like what you've heard? Follow our podcast for more great content.Show Notes:In this episode, Katie speaks with North Canterbury farmer, and chair of the Hurunui District Landcare Group, Ben Ensor, about the role of catchment groups and the work of Catchment Communities Aotearoa (CCA).Ben shares insights from his experience farming in Cheviot and his involvement in catchment groups over the past decade. The conversation explores how farmer-led collaboration is helping rural communities respond to environmental expectations, build confidence, and create meaningful change on the ground.Farming in North CanterburyBen farms 1,400 hectares of hill country in Cheviot with his wife and daughter. Their sheep and beef operation runs Quarter-bred ewes and Angus cattle, with additional irrigated finishing land for livestock. While the farm is busy producing quality meat and livestock, Ben has also spent the past ten years heavily involved in catchment group initiatives that support environmental improvements and farmer collaboration. How Catchment Groups BeganBen's involvement began with the Hurunui District Landcare Group, which formed around a decade ago in response to major regulatory changes affecting local farmers. Those changes highlighted the need for farmers to have a stronger voice in environmental discussions and policy decisions.Catchment groups provided a platform for farmers to share their stories, communicate the good work already happening on farms, and better understand their environmental impacts. Over time, similar groups formed across New Zealand, leading to the creation of Catchment Communities Aotearoa to represent them nationally. What Catchment Communities Aotearoa DoesCCA acts as a national body connecting catchment groups and giving them a stronger collective voice. Today the organisation represents around 220 catchment groups covering approximately 12 million hectares across New Zealand.Rather than directing how individual groups operate, CCA focuses on supporting them through coordination, sharing resources, and helping connect communities facing similar challenges. This national platform also allows catchment groups to engage more effectively with government, regional councils, and other stakeholders.Supporting Farmers and Building ConfidenceOne of the biggest impacts of catchment groups has been improving farmer confidence. Over recent years, farmers have faced increasing environmental regulation, social pressure, and uncertainty about what changes were required on their farms.Catchment groups bring communities together to better understand environmental expectations, explore solutions, and support each other through change. This collaborative approach helps farmers take practical action such as improving riparian management, planting, fencing waterways, or establishing wetlands. While environmental improvements like water quality take time to measure, Ben says the visible progress in on-farm actions and community engagement has already been significant.Looking Ahead for Catchment GroupsCatchment groups have grown rapidly, but they are entering a new phase. Some government funding that helped establish groups during the COVID recovery period is reducing, meaning groups must adapt to operate with more sustainable funding models.Despite these challenges, Ben believes catchment groups remain in a strong position because they are built on community leadership. Their grassroots approach ensures solutions are locally relevant and widely supported.Key TakeawayFor Ben, success in the coming years will mean catchment groups being recognised as trusted partners in environmental improvement. By empowering farmers and communities to work together, catchment groups have the potential to deliver lasting environmental progress while maintaining strong, resilient farming businesses.

TAKEAWAYSPassionLife Ministries focuses on training Christian leaders worldwide to train their flock to encourage mothers to choose lifePregnancy and abortion is a complex emotional issue that PassionLife Ministries narrows down to four critical questionsThe first two questions: What does the Bible say about life in the womb? What does the Bible say about shedding innocent blood? The second two questions: How can we experience God's forgiveness? What has God called us to do to STOP abortion?
There's a lot of unanswered questions relating to allegations against a former Prime Minister staffer. Michael Forbes has quit as acting deputy press secretary over allegations he took compromising recordings of sex workers - and photos of women he didn't know. The Government's pushed their new pay equity changes through - and it's prompted some noticeable backlash. The Bill, halting pay equity claims and raising the threshold to lodge a claim based on gender discrimination, passed this week under urgency. Hundreds of protestors turned up outside Ministerial offices around the country in opposition. NZ Herald political reporter Jamie Ensor says these changes left Kiwis feeling 'blindsided' - and it felt like a 'perfect storm' making these changes so close to the Budget. I truly loved this conversation with my long time internet friend, Elizabeth Ensor. Elizabeth is so inspiring to me. She is intentional in her role as a wife, mother, home educator, a creative and as a woman. She wants to make the most and the best with what she has, and she is doing it! In this episode Elizabeth shares with us about the guide she created to glean wisdom from mothers farther along the path than we are. After Elizabeth's mom passed away, Elizabeth missed being able to talk to her mom with questions and really she had a yearning for godly wisdom from seasoned mothers. So she made what she was looking for! Learn all about this resource she made. She tells us more in today's episode. Where to find Elizabeth: Find her website here Find her Seasoned Moms guide here Find her on Instagram here Resources mentioned in this episode: Find the Seasoned Moms Interview Guide here Some favorite quotes from this episode: “My mom was always right there and very intentional about what we did.” Elizabeth Ensor “Her approach to motherhood and life has inspired me and every good part of me is from her!” Elizabeth Ensor “There is this idea in the business world, this 3 percent rule that if you invest back into yourself, you set money aside, then you are going to grow as a person and a leader. So even as a mom and home educator, we may not be bringing in a lot, but our emotional health and wisdom runs the home.” Elizabeth Ensor “Every seasoned mom just tells me to enjoy it. Enjoy your kids.” Elizabeth Ensor “Wisdom is mentioned in the Bible over 200 times and we are commanded to seek it.” Elizabeth Ensor “We need to have the humility to say, ‘I don't have this all figured out and I need some help and wisdom from someone farther along than me and someone whose children I admire. Those are the people I want to learn from.” Greta Eskridge “The investment you make, not just in your children but in yourself as a mom, to raise your children well is valuable.” Greta Eskridge “Whatever season I am in, I want to fully enjoy it.” Greta Eskridge “We need to be heard in the moments when it's hard and then we need to be reminded to really celebrate, even when it's hard, because the seasons don't last forever.” Greta Eskridge
As these things happen when we are on the road, we met a Canadian in Ostend, Belgium. Radio Juxtapoz was on the road for the annual Crystal Ship and as we love with the mural festivals we get to see the process, the ideas and the creation of so many works from so many different practices. Katie Green creates masks, what she calls "intimate watercolour personas that are eerie and ethereal." On a mural level, this requires participation and something quite unique. Her project, as she notes on her IG, "is a community driven process which uses handmade masks as a way to build community, find healing, and explore aspects of self. By designing and wearing a mask, invited participants are given the opportunity to present society with an internal, alternate, or imagined part of themselves. The mask creates a safe space—both expressive and anonymous—to share oneself with the outside world."Like Ostends' beloved James Ensor, "Katie uses masks as a symbol for intrigue. Masks are a passageway between what we perceive on the outside and the mystery of what lies beyond. In Ensor's work, his masks are unpredictable and we are invited to befriend our own imaginations as we ponder the hidden subjects. In this project masks become an extension of self, where each participant is guided through a curated process that brings them closer to their internal landscape." So for Crystal Ship, Green worked with the community to create masks, and chose this particular mask as an ode to the city and Ensor's work. And we have her on this episode of Radio Juxtapoz. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 137 was recorded by Gillen in Ostend in April 2024 during Crystal Ship. Some producers, like New Zealand sheep farmer Paul Ensor, are seizing the opportunity to capture more of that value. "A lot of farmers don't know where their produce goes once it leaves the farm gate, but we're very well connected and we know what standards they require for us to grow the wool under. And so it's all about adding value and the best way to do that is be better connected to our end customer, farm to fashion."Paul is capitalizing on this farm to fashion opportunity in a number of ways, including his own natural fiber brand called Hemprino, which is a blend of 80% fine merino wool and 20% hemp. "There's a lot of wool blended with synthetic fibers to give it various attributes, whether to make the yarn stronger or more durable or give it some stretch. So we thought, well, why can't we do that with another natural fiber?"Hemprino has been successful and Paul says he's having a lot of fun, but running a consumer focused business on top of a farming operation, is not an easy challenge to take on. "The supply chain is very challenging. So like when the wool leaves the farm, it's almost at times up to 18 months before we can have a garment to sell. So just all that managing that time from leaving the farm gate to hitting the store, if you like, has been quite challenging."Paul Ensor of Hemprino talks to guest host Janette Barnard on today's Future of Agriculture podcast.
