In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, award-winning biographer Dr Bernadette Brennan chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about her choices while crafting Leaping into Waterfalls: The Enigmatic Gillian Mears, a literary biography that explores the rich, tumultuous life of Gillian Mears, one of Australia's most celebrated writers.   Here's what you'll discover in this episode:  Gillian Mears's lived and imaginative lives were rich with adventure, risk and often transgressive passion. Her sensuality and sexuality were the driving forces of her life and writing, and her personal and fictional worlds coalesce Why Bernadette Brennan chose the title, Leaping into Waterfalls Why she explored the meaning of the metaphors in Gillian's writing, suggesting what they reveal about Gillian's character How Bernadette took control of the narrative despite Gillian's valiant attempts to curate her image through her annotated archives of 123 boxes of letters, diaries' manuscripts and other traces of her life How Bernadette retraced Gillian's footsteps to create an authentic sense of place How Bernadette balanced Gillian's life story with literary criticism of her oeuvre How Bernadette kept the focus on Gillian while also portraying the historical, social and cultural context of her times, which included prominent authors such as Helen Garner, Tim Winton and Kate Grenville Ethical decisions about what evidence to include, emphasise and suppress given that Gillian's sensuality and sexuality were at the core of her identity and informed her writing.

For the finale of Season 3 I've swapped roles with Dr James Brown of the ADHD Adults Podcast and ADHDadultUK Charity - the 1st ever ADHDAF guest - to answer the questions I've been asking for 2.5 years to conclude the season which almost didn't get released & ADHD Awareness Month 2024. Whilst we explore the themes of Internalised misogyny, ableism and RSD, this lengthy, side-questy and VERY sweary (sorry Mum) chinwag is a celebration of launching stage one of ADHDAF+ Charity and  ADHDAF Emporium and all that's been overcome to continue ADHDAF solo for a whole year. And it is an ENORMOUS THANK YOU to all who have supported this podcast, the socials, the online peer support community, the live events, the retreat and ADHDAF Day.  I can't say thank you enough to you all!- As explained in the episode(!!!) this cover photo is by the incredible @summonfirehotography- Editing and jingle by @sessionzservices - The playlist for all season 3 guests 'ADHD Song', including my ADHDAF Anthem is available to listen to HEREI must admit I was cringing at the amount of times I swear in this episode - likely because it turned into a relaxed conversation between two friends. HOWEVER, I realised that if I edited the swearing out, I would only be doing so to appease my own internalised misogyny! So I've kept the swears in for that reason, and because it is symbolic of all that I've put into ADHDAF since April '22 - every single 'eff' I have to give! :)THANKS SO MUCH to James for interviewing me and for all of his support from day dot - a man who has done DOUBLE the ammont of live shows I have at  70 in the same period!! Trigger warning: Alongside swearing we discuss some heavy topics such as: bullying, ableism, trolling, sexism, internalised misogyny, addiction, accidental injury, premature death, suicidal ideation, suicide, self harm, divorce, family and relationship struggles, bereavement, abusive relationships, self loathing, depression and anxiety. If you are in need of support YOU ARE NOT ALONE! One thing is certain about fishermen and fisherwomen, we all enjoy fishing for a cause and getting the competitive juices flowing. This week we had the fortune of supporting and participating in the 2nd Annual No BS Inshore Slam tourney out of Georgetown, S.C. The crew put three teams together to fish and we decided to record our radio show on site at the captains meeting. The Mears family founded this event to raise funds to help with research and treatments for Hydrocephalus. Also known as water on the brain, this is a condition in which there is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain. Funds from this event will go to help with research as well as helping provide treatment for patients that will not include braind surgery(BS). Our guests this week included some of our normal hosts as well as a few surprise guests. What's up, dudes? Its one of the best vampire movies out there! Yes, I've got Bob Baker from Festive Foreign Film Fans,  Santa Ambassador Matt Spaulding from  North Pole Radio, and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa with me to talk Salem's Lot! It's a 1979 made for tv movie adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel, and it's dope! When Ben Mears comes back to Jerusalem's Lot, he intends to research and write about the old Marsten House. He befriends a young college girl named Susan, and begins a relationship with her. Meanwhile, the house is bought by antiquities dealers Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker. Spoiler alert: Barlow's a master vampire and Straker's his familiar. The town's denizens slowly begin disappearing, falling ill, and dying. As it turns out, Barlow's been transforming the Glick boys and others into vampires. Mears, Susan, and a few others, including a doctor, a teacher, and young boy named Danny, begin to fight back. After Fr. Callahan fails his crisis of faith and leaves, and after Susan is transformed and slain, the rest eventually kill Barlow and Straker. They set the town on fire, too.Creepy old haunted house? Check. Creepy old antique shop? Uh huh. Creepy old blue skinned vampire with rat teeth? Only if it's a poor makeup job! So grab your stakes, fill up vials with holy water, and hunt during the daylight with this episode on "Salem's Lot!" Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe look back at a rough week for the Brewers, and the 2-4 record was just the start of it. The team added another pitcher at the deadline with some iffy stats, and the team's draft signings in 2024 didn't go the way they hoped. Is Aaron Civale's rotation spot in trouble now that he's struggled through five starts? Was Frankie Montas the right call to add to the roster? Should the Brewers have done more? Can this team, struggling on offense and on the mound for a prolonged period of time, hold onto its still-healthy lead in the National League Central, and if they do, do they have the hammers to get deep into a postseason? Three Up Three Down makes mention of a big-time prospect climbing the ladder and a hometown product coming back to burn the Brewers. Remembrew When looks back at a fruitful trade deadline, and Curt Blanche has a playoff Game 1 vision. He and his wife, a small-animal internal medicine specialist practicing in Denver, have more than $400,000 in veterinary-school debt that they manage using federal income-driven repayment plans. By necessity (and now obsession), his professional activities include researching and speaking on veterinary-student debt, providing guidance to colleagues on loan-repayment strategies and contributing to VIN Foundation resources. Beyond debt, his professional interests include small- and exotic-animal practice. Dr. Rebecca Mears Rebecca Mears, DVM is from Lexington, KY, and a graduate of University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine. Rebecca started her career as an equine general practitioner and is an active AAEP member, currently serving as a member of the AAEP DEI Committee. Her interest in student debt education began with keeping her own education costs lower and grew from there. This was supported by her involvement in the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA), which she now gives back to as a National Advisor. In her time away from veterinary medicine, she can be found obsessing over plants and hosting impromptu dance parties.
