Why Is Widening Peña Boulevard So Controversial?

City Cast Denver

What's the best way to get to DIA? The A Line is not the most accessible option for everyone, and Peña Boulevard always seems to be slammed with traffic. With the airport already crazy crowded, and plans in the works for even more growth, city and airport leaders have been talking a lot over the past few years about expanding the highway. But then last week, the expansion proposal hit a roadblock, with City Council postponing a vote on a key contract. So today, we're sharing a conversation we had back in August 2023 with Denver Post reporter Jon Murray about why this highway expansion is so controversial.  DIA celebrated its 30th anniversary last week, with airport officials announcing plans for $12.8 billion worth of improvements and expansions over the next 12 years, including a seventh runway.  What do you think should be done about the airport commute problem? It was nice to chat with jon. His story sounded like the start of others I had heard, but jon is unique which in turn, so is his story. It was staggering to hear his moment when he put his foot in the ground and became an individual who would live without alcohol. I'm inspired by what he's done, how he talks to himself, and the values that find their way into his business. Thanks for the honesty, jon. Born and raised in the South, but a traveler at heart, Jon Murray is changing the hospitality industry for the better with the opening of his first concept, Noko, an Asian-inspired, wood-fired restaurant in East Nashville. With almost 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Murray and his Noko partners aim to create a more sustainable work environment for their employees, while offering guests a taste of the restaurants Asian-inspired comfort foods.  Founded in 2016, the mission of Ben's Friends is to offer hope, fellowship, and a path forward to anyone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction. By coming together, starting a dialogue, and acknowledging that substance abuse cannot be overcome by isolation and willpower alone, Ben's Friends hopes to write a new chapter in the lives of food and beverage professionals across the country. Well, it's happening again. Complaints about traffic have driven the powers that be to make the same old proposal: What if we just added an extra lane to that troublesome highway? This time it's the main road out to Denver International Airport — Peña Boulevard. The transit experts say it won't help. But what about our new Mayor Mike Johnston? And what about all the new neighbors set to move into the area soon — AKA, more than 35,000 families, Pepsi's new bottling plant, and maybe even Elitch Gardens? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi speak with Denver Post reporter Jon Murray about why he thinks this highway widening seems “inevitable,” even though the A Line is right there.  If you have input on the planning process for Peña Boulevard, you can make your voice heard at the community event in Green Valley Ranch tonight from 5-8 p.m. There's another one scheduled for next Wednesday at the same time.  Paul mentioned the DIA train's new voice and Suncor's latest legal settlement.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. The Great Hall renovation project has been a headache for more than four years now, but it's supposed to make the travel experience… better? Somehow? Denver Post reporter Jon Murray has been covering the project since the beginning, and he's back on the show with guest host Avery Lill to explain why the project has taken so long, where all that money is supposed to come from, and who all of this hoopla is really for.  For more details on next steps for the Great Hall project, here's Murray's latest for the Denver Post: https://www.denverpost.com/2021/12/10/denver-airport-terminal-project-completion/ Wanna know what's on Peyton's Plate this week? When longtime CEO of Denver International Airport Kim Day announced her retirement back in May, Mayor Michael Hancock called up an old friend and colleague to see if he wanted the job. That friend, former RTD CEO Phil Washington, jumped at the chance to move back from Los Angeles — can you blame him? But now that some pretty serious allegations about his time with LA Metro have come to light, Phil has got some explaining to do. Axios Denver's Alayna Alvarez has been covering the allegations, and she chats with City Cast Denver producer Paul Karolyi to break it down. Plus, producer Xandra McMahon was there yesterday when City Council members questioned Phil Washington on his record, the allegations, and his plans for the future of the airport.  For more on Phil Washington's record with RTD and LA Metro, past and future City Cast Denver guest Jon Murray has the story for the Denver Post. In a year that has seen critical acclaim for the coming-of-age film The Peanut Butter Falcon, starring former Special Olympics athlete Zack Gottsagen, Hollywood is learning that there is a place in the industry for people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This hasn't always been the case – although the CDC estimates that more than 250,000 Americans have Down Syndrome, only 1.6 percent of all speaking characters in 2018's top 100 movies evinced any sort of disability. Tropic Thunder parodied the practice of actors "going full R-word," an unfortunate Hollywood tradition that has included several Oscar winners. The Rebeccas trace the industry's history of portraying characters with IDD (which, to be fair, does include highlights such as Chris Burke's authentic Golden Globe-nominated performance in the early '90s family drama Life Goes On) and sit down with Rachel Osterbach and her mother Laurie, two of the stars of A&E's Emmy-winning docuseries Born This Way, which follows seven adults with Down Syndrome, and the show's executive producer Jon Murray.”Hollywood Remixed” is a topical, diversity-focused podcast from The Hollywood Reporter, hosted by Rebecca Sun and Rebecca Ford.
