Their widely celebrated debut THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON was bootstrapped by grit, hard work, and a ferocious commitment to making something authentic, and that same spirit fills every frame of their follow-up film, LOS FRIKIS. Like the filmmakers themselves, the movie follows a group of lovable outsiders finding their own way to make beautiful art in a system that opposes it. In today's conversation with Jeffrey Crane Graham, they discuss how filmmaking is like building a house: pre-production is a blueprint, production is about "collecting lumber," and post-production is an act of construction. In this episode of No Film School, Jason Hellerman interviews Tyler Nielsen and Michael Schwartz, the dynamic directing duo behind the bold and provocative film Los Frikis. Known for their previous success with Peanut Butter Falcon, Tyler and Michael take listeners on a journey into the making of their latest project—a darkly comedic and deeply human tale about the Los Frikis generation in 1990s Cuba. The film explores themes of rebellion, freedom, and survival, centering on punks who willfully injected HIV to escape oppression. In this episode, No Film School's Jason Hellerman, Tyler Nielsen, and Michael Schwartz discuss: How Tyler and Michael transitioned from Peanut Butter Falcon to Los Frikis The challenge of balancing dark humor with historical and cultural authenticity Why the directors learned Spanish to ensure authenticity in directing Cuban actors Their approach to punk rock aesthetics, both musically and visually, in the film Practical advice for filmmakers tackling deeply unconventional and emotional stories Memorable Quotes: “Punk rock is choosing freedom and choosing, like, your reality, regardless of the authorities or the powers that be.” “If you task the audience with remembering 10 things, they might remember the wrong five. So we focused on the five things that mattered most.” “We really just try to set a vibe. The vibe matches the story. And then we invite people to bring themselves to it.” Resources: Microbudget Workshop with GG Hawkins Tyler Nielsen IMDb Michael Schwartz IMDb Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com Learn more about your ad choices. Presenting... Part 1 of my Filmmaker Roundtable at the Hampton International Film Festival. In this episode, we talk to the filmmaking teams of two feature narratives and one documentary. We delve into the process of creating their films and their experience at the festival. Including: Delaney Buffet (Director, Lead Actress, Writer) and Katie Corwin (Lead Actress, Writer) for Adult Best Friends. Nothing holds a mirror up to your life more than the examination of a friend from childhood. While Katie (Katie Corwin) should be celebrating her engagement to John (Mason Gooding), she can't help but fret over what her best friend, Delaney (Delaney Buffett), will think. Driftless and unambitious, her opinions and feelings matter most to Katie. In an effort to reconnect and break the news gently, she plans a girls' trip to assuage her codependent friend, setting the stage for a hilarious buddy comedy. With an attractive cast (including Zachary Quinto, Cazzie David and Alexander Hodge) and zippy dialogue, closeness and self-deprecating humor are felt through the screen. Michael Schwartz (Writer, Director - Los Frikis, Peanut Butter Falcon), Eros de la Puente (Actor), and Hector Medina (Actor) for Los Frikis. Inspired by the audacity and resilience of kindred souls facing the challenges of Special Period Cuba, the plot tells the story of youthful members of a punk rock band, who, seeking musical freedom, relief from poverty, and a sense of independence, purposely infect themselves with HIV. This allows them entry to an isolated government run sanatorium where they live life on their own terms, forging a seemingly utopian community and looking to an uncertain future with hope and resilience. Dori Berinstein (Director) for A Man with Sole: The Impact of Kenneth Cole. More than just a global fashion icon, footwear designer Kenneth Cole has put cause before commerce for 40 years, driven by heart and 'sole.' Undoubtedly a trendsetter, Cole inspired and mobilized cultural norms and perceptions for the better as a pioneer of corporate social action; he advocated for social causes—from HIV/AIDS and homelessness to LGBTQIA+ rights and mental health—through his groundbreaking advertising campaigns. Featuring a treasure trove of archival footage and interviews with fashion leaders, global scientists, and longtime collaborators, Tony and Emmy Award winner Dori Bernstein celebrates Cole's enduring legacy of combining style with social conscience. Editors - Laura Zempel and Nat Fuller The Emmy®-nominated BEEF editing team of Laura Zempel and Nat Fuller came into this project with plenty of experience crafting storylines featuring complicated characters and situations.  Nat kicked off his career with another well-known Netflix property, STRANGER THINGS, starting as an assistant before transitioning to full editorial duties on the Duffer Brothers supernatural juggernaut.  For Laura, her time in the editing suites of complex dramas began with assisting on DEXTER, to ultimately cutting on HBO's critically-acclaimed EUPHORIA. Created by Korean director Lee Sung Jin (Sunny) for Netflix, BEEF stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as Danny Cho and Amy Lau, two strangers whose involvement in a road rage incident escalates into a prolonged feud. LAURA ZEMPEL In addition to her Emmy®-nominated work on BEEF, Laura's skills as an editor can be seen in EUPHORIA (2019-22), DISPATCHES FROM ELSEWHERE (2020) and ROOM 104 (2017-19).  Prior to that, she assisted on HOUSE OF CARDS (2014), DEXTER (2011-13) and IF I CAN DREAM (2010). NAT FULLER Nat's journey to being an Emmy®-nominated editor began with assisting duties on the features MALEFICENT (2014) and THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (2015), in addition to the debut season of STRANGER THINGS (2017).  Fuller would go on to co-edit the indie THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON (2019) amidst taking on lead editing duties for Seasons 2-4 for STRANGER THINGS (2017-22). Prodigal Son was conceived by Kove and writer-producer Don Handfield — who co-writes the series. Handfield is the author of hit comic series The Dark Age, The Source and The Rift. He is also co-creator and EP of History Channel's Knightfall, and producer of The Founder, staring Michael Keaton. Actor-writer Clay Adams penned the series alongside Handfield and is a voice talent behind animated series TMNT, Yu-Gi-Oh! and writer of Scout Comics' Red X-Mas. Producer Chris LeMole (Mudbound, Peanut Butter Falcon) also shares story credit.Pre-launch Page Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1546838856/prodigal-son-1Martin Kove was born on March 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. Strong-featured, narrow-eyed actor who has portrayed a mixed bag of both good guys and bad guys. He first turned up on screen in several minor roles, and was noticed as the villainous Nero the Hero in the low-budget road race Death Race 2000 (1975), and then as Clem the sadistic rigger, breaking Jan-Michael Vincent's ribs in White Line Fever (1975). He cropped up on the television series Cagney & Lacey (1981) portraying honest Police Detective Isbecki, and then ended up on the wrong side of a rampaging Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985).Kove probably scored his greatest visibility to the public in the hugely successful The Karate Kid (1984) in which he played John Kreese, the head instructor of the Cobra Kai karate school. He reprised the role in the two sequels, The Karate Kid Part II (1986) and The Karate Kid Part III (1989). Kove has since kept consistently busy, primarily in the action-thriller film genre, and has notched up over 80 film appearances to date, as well as numerous television guest roles.

Peanut Butter Falcon is our second film for this month and this year. This 2019 film from the minds of first time film makers Tyler Nelson and Michael Schwartz is a Huck Finn style movie. In tone and story it is the tale of Zak portrayed by newcomer Zack Gottsagen and Tyler played by Shia LeBeouf on a bit of a road trip. Eleanor (Dakota Johnson) is on the search to bring Zak back to the senior living facility that he lives in because there is no other place for him in the area. The DP Nigel Bluck, known for Deadpool and The Lord of the Rings provides very artistic and stunning landscapes for this road film. The film takes place in Savannah, Georgia and has quite the cast of characters rounding out the call sheet like veteran Bruce Dean and Thomas Hayden Church.    Carl: Friends are the family you choose.   Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: Casting The bayou as a informative character A Huck Finn type story A new type of earmuffs The conversation of how we treat limited ability individuals Many Montages   To guess the theme of this month's films you can call or text us at 971-245-4148 or email to christi@dodgemediaproductions.com You can guess as many times as you would like.   Special thanks to Melissa Villagrana for our social media posts.   Next week's film will be our 100 episode: Joe vs. The Volcano (1990)   Subscribe, Rate & Share Your Favorite Episodes!
