Dominic Gaetani is a senior associate from DKO Architecture, who as a Tasmanian-born architect, left the sleepy Apple Isle more than 10 years ago to pursue his dream of shaping Melbourne's skyline. One of those is the old Prison Pentridge in Coburg, an Australian landmark established in 1851, that has housed some of Australia's most notorious criminals including Ned Kelly, Squizzy Taylor, Mark ‘Chopper' Read and Julian Knight. It was closed in 1997.DKO Architecture recently won a design competition for its initial masterplan and design strategy for the southern portion of the historic Pentridge Village precinct in Coburg in Melbourne's north.  Appointed by developer Salvo following a multi-stage pitch process, DKO has outlined a preliminary vision to revitalise the 19,000m2 site into a $1.2 billion mixed use redevelopment featuring a highly activated public realm, community spaces and integrated retail amenity that reflect the rich history of the site and Coburg character, along with reimagined multi-residential spaces. In this exclusive interview, Gaetani outlines how he overcame the unique challenges in master planning such an iconic site, and what cultural legacies he believes this project will leave the city of Melbourne. This podcast is brought to you in association with AWS,  proud sponsors of our 2024 Residential series of podcasts.

Tim Watson-Munro (born 1952/1953) is an Australian criminal Psychologist. His expertise has been used in some of Australia's biggest criminal trials. He has analysed some of Australia's most prolific and violent criminals, including underworld figure Alphonse Gangitano and mass murderer Julian Knight.  His work involves determining whether those charged with acts of extreme violence are legally insane. Watson-Munro is regularly called upon to provide expert evidence in court and in the media. Early Life Born 1952/1953, Watson-Munro has described being raised in a "privileged academic environment". His father was a professor of physics, and his mother was a scientist. He was initially educated at Sydney Grammar School, where he left to work in a lumber yard. Watson-Munro later returned to a different school to complete his secondary education. He then went on to study psychology at the University of Sydney. Career Watson-Munro is described by The Herald Sun as one of Australia's leading and distinguished criminal psychologists. In 1978, he began his career at Paramatta Jail. He then went into private practice. He has assessed over 30,000 people in his career, including 200 murderers. Watson-Munro's primary role when assessing criminals is to determine whether they are legally insane. Three notable individuals Watson-Munro has worked with included Julian Knight, Alphonse Gagitano, and Mr Cruel. Watson-Munro was the psychologist responsible for assessing and working with Julian Knight after he carried out the 1987 Hoddle Street massacre, killing seven people and leaving 19 injured. Watson-Munro states that the marksmanship during the massacre suggested clear thinking on the part of Knight. Watson-Munro was assigned to treat deceased Melbourne underworld figure Alphonse Gangitano shortly after his arrest for allegedly murdering petty criminal Gregory Workman. Gangitano was released after the prosecution dropped all charges relating to the arrest after a key witness left the country. Watson-Munro expected Gangitano not to pursue treatment. However, shortly after his release, Gangitano contacted him for an appointment, and treatment continued. Watson-Munro has written that Gangitano had a degree of "intellectual prowess", and that his time with Gangitano demonstrated to him that even career criminals can have "other lives that are seemingly quite normal". "Mr Cruel" is a pseudonym for the never-identified suspect of several child rapes and the murder of Karmein Chan in Melbourne during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Watson-Munro was contracted by Victoria Police during their investigation to profile the potential offender.  Views Watson-Munro is an advocate of educating and informing victims of crime about their rights to compensation and treatment. Watson-Munro in 1996 voiced concerns that the child welfare system in Victoria was in "chaos and on the brink of collapse". He noted truancy and crime being committed by children in the care of the state and called for a royal commission into the government department responsible. Watson-Munro was involved in assessing a 14-year-old boy who, while wandering around at night, murdered a taxi driver. Watson-Munro has criticised a proposal to ban songs with suicidal themes as "censorship gone mad". He considers such proposals well intentioned, but that real issues of youth suicide in Australia need addressing, such as socio-economic circumstances. Watson-Munro has stated that individuals who consume true crime media and are socially isolated, mentally ill, or young can become desensitised to violence and gore. He stated, "I think there is a nexus between that and people viewing this material and becoming desensitised to it or wanting to see what it is like". Controversy In 1999, Watson-Munro pleaded guilty to using and possessing cocaine. He was fined $1,000 and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond, a non-custodial sentence of good behaviour.  He was later that year reprimanded by the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria on two counts of unprofessional misconduct after being found to have formed a personal relationship with a female client. In June 2000, the Board refused his re-registration as a psychologist. In 2002, the Board again found it not in the public interest to allow Watson-Munro to practice. Watson-Munro has described the years preventing him from running a clinical practice as "the greatest challenge [he] ever faced". In 2003, Watson-Munro regained registration as a psychologist, on the basis he undertook supervision for a period of two years. Personal Life Watson-Munro's first wife Susan, died of cancer. He is now married to his second, Carla. He is the father of five children.

Tim Watson Munro has sat across from the worst of the worst.  Rapists. Terrorists. Mass murderers.  Tim's a psychologist, who started his career in the prison system as the resident psych at Parramatta jail, before turning to the private sector - where he mainly worked for defence lawyers defending alleged crooks. He's assessed everyone from Julian Knight, the man responsible for the Hoddle Street massacre, to members of The Family, a so-called doomsday cult. But it's a job that took its toll over the years, as he absorbed the horrors his clients had both experienced and perpetrated on others. And as he discovered over the course of his career, it's hard to get out the other side unscathed, when you've been dancing with other people's demons.  CREDITS Guest: Tim Watson-Munro You can find out more about his books Dancing With Demons and Shrink In The Clink here. Hani's widow wants Waluś parole judgment rescinded and case heard anew by Judge Zondo

Chris Hani's widow wants the Constitutional Court to rescind its decision to give murderer Janusz Waluś parole, but this will be a tall order a law expert told News24. Limpho Hani and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have applied to the Constitutional Court to rescind its decision to give Walus parole. They want the case to be heard anew at a date to be determined by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. Last week, the apex court ruled that Waluś be released from Kgosi Mampuru prison in Tshwane within 10 working days, after he had served his sentence for Hani's 1993 murder. On Tuesday, correctional services said an inmate stabbed Waluś. He is in a stable condition after receiving treatment in prison. On Wednesday, members of the ANC, SACP and Cosatu staged a protest outside the prison. Organisers said they wanted to express their anger and dissatisfaction that Waluś was set to be released. In her court papers, Hani argues that she was not "treated fairly by the court". She also says the judgment had "a patent error" because her submissions were not fully examined. She said only applications by Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola and Waluś were fully considered. She said the court "lacked independence" by not evaluating her submissions. In her affidavit, Hani said the decision by the court to grant Waluś parole by taking the power away from Lamola was an error. She said Waluś's South African citizenship was revoked in 2016, and the court should have considered this before granting the parole. "This Court denied the Minister an opportunity to deal with the most important aspect of parole in the present case, being the fact that the first respondent's citizenship has been revoked. "Given the importance, the citizenship status on parole matters, and the fact that the status of the first respondent has never been fully canvassed before this Court and less or no information is placed before this Court. The Minister is incapable of releasing the applicant on day parole and/or imposing parole conditions on him in circumstances where his release from prison to serve parole in South Africa shall itself be an offence," she said. Earlier this week, Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said Waluś had been granted citizenship so he could serve his parole here and not in his native Poland. Constitutional law expert Professor Pierre de Vos said it was hard for the judgment to be rescinded. "Right now, it will be hard to say, but it will all depend on the arguments they bring. They have to bring something that is plausible for it to be successful." Waluś's lawyer, Julian Knight declined to comment on the application.
