It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

If you’re not a musician, you might occasionally think how great it would be to be a musician. If you are a musician, you might occasionally think how great it must have been to be in The Beatles. New Orleanian Bruce Spizer is not a musician. He’s a lawyer and an accountant. But, not only has he occasionally thought how great it must have been to be in The Beatles, he’s written 16 books about them. Bruce is a world-renowned Beatles expert. He’s been a guest on practically every major American TV news show. He’s made countless TV appearances around the world. He’s a Beatles consultant for Universal Music Group, Capital Records, and Apple Corps – the Beatles’ own label – and he wrote the questions and answers for The Beatles edition of Trivial Pursuit. In case you’re wondering why any of this would make Bruce Spizer a guest on a business show, his book sales alone have earned over $3m. One of his books is selling on Amazon for over $4,000, and there are more books in the works. If you live in New Orleans and you like festivals and live music – and if you don’t, you’re probably planning on leaving – you’ll be familiar with the work of Stephen St. Cyr. If you’re trying to place his name and wondering what band he’s in, or whether he’s maybe a celebrity chef, nope, it’s none of that. Stephen is President of a company called Vivid Ink. Vivid Ink makes visual artwork for festivals and events – like stage banners, sponsor signage, practically everything that’s not food or music, at events like Jazz Fest, Sugar Bowl, Hogs For The Cause, Tales of the Cocktail and a long list of others. There are two branches of Stephen’s company – a Baton Rouge office that works with corporate clients, and the more fun New Orleans division - a big building on Poydras Street where a staff of 29 creates all the live event stuff. It’s kind of nice at this point in their respective careers to talk with Stephen and Bruce about the extraordinary successes they’ve both accomplished. But none of this success was handed to either of them. Their own creativity and hard work has made all of this happen. And it doesn’t look either of them are taking their foot off the gas any time soon. Their future achievments may turn out to be as notable as their histories. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Beatles author Bruce Spizer wrote the liner notes for the new vinyl box The Beatles U.S. 1964 Albums in Mono, and here he digs into the history of these reconfigured U.S. Capitol albums, from Meet the Beatles! through Beatles '65 and The Early Beatles. Spizer is a New Orleans tax lawyer and CPA, and that expertise has helped him untangle the Beatles' early dealings with labels such as Chicago's Vee-Jay. Capitol executive Dave Dexter passed on the Beatles four times before being put in charge of their U.S. releases, and Spizer details how Dexter added singles and cut out other songs to create the albums that introduced millions of listeners to the Beatles. Then there's the sound of this all-analog-from-the-original-masters collection, with Spizer discussing how the U.S. mixes were different and sometimes more exciting than their U.K. counterparts. Furthermore, the viewpoints of noted Beatles authors such as Bruce Spizer, Jim Berkenstadt, Kit O'Toole, Charles Rosenay, Terry Crain, and Jude Southerland Kessler are expressed as well as the opinions of other famous entertainers. Yes, there was GOOD in 2020...especially in The Beatles World! Hosts Jude Southerland Kessler of The John Lennon Series and Lanea Stagg of The Recipe Records Series selected six of the most outstanding Beatles-inspired media of 2020 and sat down to chat with the creators. You'll hear from noted author (Long and Winding Roads: The Evolving Artistry of The Beatles, Maximum Volume: The Life of Beatles Producer, George Martin, and many others), Dr. Ken Womack, talking about his brilliant new book John Lennon 1980. Then, author and filmmaker, Jim Berkenstadt, fills us in on the new film that's being made from his best-seller, The Beatle Who Vanished on the life of drummer Jimmie Nicol. Nicole drummed for The Beatles in June of 1964 when Ringo was ill. The story is exciting! Then, Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame lead guitarist for The Cars, Elliot Easton, joins Jude and Lanea to talk about his super-group, The Empty Hearts. The blockbuster band has just released The Empty Hearts Second Album, with Ringo Starr on drums during one number! You'll love this! Next up, Sirius XM's Tom Frangione announces his brand new Channel 18 (The Beatles Channel) weekly radio program, "Way Beyond Compare" that breaks down rare and unheard Beatles songs. And distinguished author, Bruce Spizer, who has published 13 books on The Beatles shares the scoop from his latest Beatles Album Series, The Beatles Finally Let It Be. Bruce has always been a best-seller with works such at The Beatles are Coming! and The Beatles for Sale on Parlophone Records. This new book is no exception! And last but not least, author Andrew Grant Jackson drops by to talk about The Beatles solo careers in his hot new book, 1973: Music at the Crossroads. He also covers the work of The Stones, The Who, Aerosmith, and many more! There's so much to enjoy on this "Best of 2020" episode of "She Said She Said."

Ranking The Beatles

At the onset of the Get Back/Let It Be project, John had a dilemma: he was short on songs. Paul and George had them falling out of their back pockets, but John was...going through some things, and didn't have a ton of material. He looked to the past, as the rest did, to old Lennon/McCartney tunes, rock & roll standards, covers, and old folk songs, like "Maggie Mae," a tale-as-old-as-time story about a prostitute robbing her...John. This tune, with's it's equally odd history, shows up between takes of "Two of Us," a light-hearted jaunt through songs they knew back when, relieving tension, and providing that "fly-on-the-wall" perspective that was the impetus behind the project. It's an enjoyable, if somewhat perplexing inclusion in the catalog. To somehow get an episode's worth of discussion on this track, we called the man who wrote the book on these sessions...literally. Bruce Spizer has written 10 books on the Beatles, examining everything from their releases on obscure independent record labels to band and solo releases on their own Apple Records, deep dives on their conquering of America, to in-depth analyses on Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, and now, Let It Be. He was the infuriating brain behind the questions on the Beatles' Trivial Pursuit game (10 points if you know what Jet Clipper Defiance is without Googling), and he's a regular speaker at Beatles conventions and events around the world. In addition to the odd history of "Maggie Mae," we touch on growing up as a 1st generation fan, what it takes to write some of the best Beatles books, the twists and turns of the Get Back/Let It Be project, and getting past book-burnout courtesy of an ex-Wings member. Bruce's new book, "The Beatles Finally Let It Be," is available now! You can get it (autographed and with a SLEW of extra goodies - all of which he outlines in the episode) at his website, Beatle.net. Get it now and you'll be able to get the addendum accompanying the release of the Peter Jackson "Get Back" film next year! We also highly recommend his other books if you're looking for informative deep dives on Beatles topics, packaged in wonderful coffee-table books. I've only had a guest on once before when my daughter Ella, a fantastic musician in her own right, co-hosted episode 71, the musical children of the Beatles. As many of you can expect once you begin talking to a fellow Beatle fan, especially one who has written books about the group, the discussions can get pretty deep. Therefore episode 100 ended up being nearly three hours long. So in order to preserve the full conversations with each author I've split what was supposed to be one episode into three. In 1963 The Beatles were unknown in the USA and couldn't secure a record deal until Vee-Jay Records, a nearly broke Chicago-based rhythm & blues label, agreed to take them on. The next two years was an adventure in legal backflips from various record labels who were clamouring to hold onto the world's most popular band. Today Beatles expert, historian & fan Bruce Spizer takes us through that adventure as laid out in his book "The Beatles Records on Vee-Jay". If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related. Web  |  Facebook  |  Instagram  |  YouTube
