The hope drains out of the pod this week after Cardiff City drew 1-1 with Oxford. After Aaron Ramsey took over, we were full of hope, but that hope has been extinguished thanks to a world-class strike from Oxford. The boys discuss that game and look ahead to West Brom. We also hear from Mark Lewis, a Cardiff City fan from Merthyr who has been working with PHS on their Back in the Game campaign. Their Back In The Game report is here. We spoke to Mark about Cardiff City, how his illness has impacted going to games, and the work he's been doing to get sanitary bins in male toilets at football grounds. It started—as these stories so often do—with fatigue. At first, Jace Yawnick simply chalked it up to a busy life and a job requiring frequent travel. But then he noticed something: There were times the fatigue kicked in when he hadn't just gotten off a plane or done anything else particularly strenuous. “Intuitively,” Jace says, “something within me just knew something wasn't right.” Then came the coughing and the back pain. It would be months—and more than one misdiagnosis—before doctors found the problem: Hodgkin lymphoma. As he processed the news of his diagnosis, Jace realized something: Facing cancer was not something he wanted to do by himself. And so, when he started to chronicle his cancer experience online, he was simply looking for catharsis and camaraderie. He got both—along with a community of 700,000-plus followers who've followed his entire journey in hopes of seeing the moment he fulfilled a cherished goal: to ring the bell and declare himself cancer-free. In this episode, Jace talks to Your Stories host Dr. Mark Lewis about what it's like to share your cancer journey with thousands of people, the importance of advocating for yourself, and the role of community when it comes to conquering cancer.
As international educators, like so many others, in a sense, we tend to write chapters to our life stories. These stories can be organized by countries, schools, travel, and, of course, the regular categories of relationships, family, children, aging, and so on.We were fortunate to catch our guest, Mark Lewis, just as he was reflecting about the chapters of his international experiences, with his retirement coming up in a couple of months.Mark is a seasoned international educator with experience at the International School Manila, American International School Riyadh, Concordia International School Shanghai, Bodwell International School, International School Ho Chi Minh City-American Academy, and BASIS Park Lane Harbour. He is currently a principal and teacher in the public school system in Canada. One of Mark's core beliefs is that many of the world's future leaders will emerge from students educated in international schools. These students are often multilingual, have received top-tier education, networked with ambitious peers, come from families of means, and almost always pursue higher education degrees—traits that are well-suited to leadership roles. This leadership may manifest in local communities, small business ventures, significant corporate positions, or even public office. It is crucial that international schools continue preparing their students for leadership roles by fostering a skill set that goes beyond academic excellence. We asked "soon-to-be-retired" Mark the guiding question: “What are some of your lessons learned from the various roles you experienced during your years of going global?”With such a long career in international schooling, Mark had a lot of gems to share with us:Commonalities of international schools in AsiaCharacteristics of international schools specifically in ChinaClarifications between legacy international schools, bilingual schools, and local-student-majority schoolsA look at for-profit schools and the various forms they can takeWorking with school boards“Leaky boundaries” in international schoolsRepatriating to one's home countryA rapid-fire sharing of lessons learned from Mark's career overseasResources mentioned in the episode:EARCOS East Asia Regional Council of SchoolsNESA - Near East/South Asia Council of Overseas SchoolsMark's Contact Information: LinkedInThis episode was recorded on March 23, 2025. It took a long time after I first read David Menconi's work to finally meet him, and longer still to sit with him for an extended conversation, but fortunately, the time has finally come. And if the saying “good things come to those who wait” applies here, if I was indeed waiting years for that Tuesday afternoon interview in late September 2024, then it is doubly appropriate now that our conversation sees the light of day in this podcast nearly another half a year afterwards. Decades after first reading his work, more than a year after first meeting him, and another stretch of months after interviewing him, now is the moment for all of this to come together. It all feels a bit fortuitous, a feeling which is echoed in our conversation, especially regarding the subject of David Menconi's latest book. David Menconi was a staff writer at the Raleigh News & Observer for 28 years, beginning in 1991, when the music scene in the region was exploding nationwide. He has also written for Rolling Stone, Billboard, Spin and New York Times. His latest book is titled Oh, Didn't They Ramble: Rounder Records and the Transformation of American Roots Music. David Menconi spoke with me at the IBMA conference in his adopted hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, in a conversation which touches on the remarkable story of Rounder Records, a music label whose story, as David put it, is the kismet story. A label formed by three idealistic folkies fresh out of college, it went on to champion the music of artists ranging from Alice Gerard to Alison Krauss, from the Blake Babies to Billy Strings, and from Ted Hawkins to Tony Rice. David talks about the Rounder Records story, the current state of the music industry, the challenges faced by writers and musicians alike, as well as the significant history of bluegrass music in the city of Raleigh and the state of North Carolina and more, including music excerpts from Rounder Records artists like Norman Blake and George Thorogood in this episode Southern Songs and Stories. David Menconi Songs heard in this episode:Tony Rice “Monroe's Hornpipe”, from The Bluegrass Album Band, Volume 6“Tango Cool“ by Ted Gioia & Mark Lewis, from Tango Cool, excerpt“Ginseng Sullivan” by Norman Blake, from Back Home In Sulphur Springs, excerpt“Move It On Over” by George Thorogood & the Destroyers, from Move It On Over, excerpt“Away From the Mire” by Billy Strings, from HomeThanks for being here! Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Monday, March 10, 2025. A major offroading trail expansion is expected to boost outdoor recreation and tourism in Eastern Kanawha County…the quirky draw of George Washington's Bath Tub attracts travelers to Berkeley Springs…and the Parkersburg CVB's new welcome center brings an increase in visitors …on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – A major outdoor recreation project in Eastern Kanawha County is poised to transform the area into a premier destination for off-road enthusiasts. The Appalachian Outlaw Trails is adding more than 2,000 acres of trails designed for ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and full-size vehicles like Jeeps and trucks. This expansion aims to attract tourists and outdoor adventurers from West Virginia and the entire East Coast. Currently featuring 25 miles of trails in the Upper Kanawha Valley, AOT has ambitious plans to double this mileage. The goal is to develop one of the most extensive off-roading parks in the nation, covering over 100,000 acres in the long term. The ultimate plan is to develop a comprehensive outdoor recreation resort complete with cabins, a concert venue, mountain biking trails, hiking paths, horseback riding areas, and clay shooting venues. The Kanawha County Commission is collaborating with AOT on this multi-phase project, with the initial focus on developing trails in the Quincy area. But of all the George Washington showcases, this reporter's favorite is a national park in the small town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. That's where America's first president was said to bathe in an open-air brick tub that reads, not surprisingly, “George Washington's Bath Tub.” It was filled with warm natural mineral spring water emanating from the surrounding mountainous countryside. What makes traveling to Berkeley Springs most enticing is that we can join, at least figuratively, Washington in sitting in a large indoor bathtub that can easily accommodate two bathers and is filled with 104-degree mineral water. It's situated in what's called the Old Roman Bath House at Berkeley Springs State Park. The Welcome Center, which opened in April 2022 after relocating to 113 Ann St., has continually seen more people each year, CVB President and CEO Mark Lewis said. The bureau and Lewis won the Excellence in Tourism Development award at the 2025 Hospitality University conference held Jan. 26-28 at the Greenbrier. The increase in tourism has enabled them to double the attendance at the Oil and Gas Museum and at Henderson Hall, while the main draw continues to be Blennerhasset Island Historical State Park. Whitechapel's Ben Savage On The Loaded Radio Podcast TL;DR In this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Whitechapel guitarist Ben Savage discusses the band's highly anticipated new album, Hymns In Dissonance, set for release on March 7 via Metal Blade Records. He dives into the writing process, the band's heaviest breakdowns yet, his biggest influences, and what fans can expect from their upcoming North American tour. Listen to the full interview below! Whitechapel's Hymns In Dissonance: Their Most Brutal Album Yet? For over a decade, Whitechapel has been at the forefront of modern deathcore, delivering devastating riffs, punishing breakdowns, and unrelenting aggression. Now, with their ninth studio album, Hymns In Dissonance, the Knoxville-based metal titans are taking their sound to darker and heavier depths than ever before. According to guitarist Alex Wade, the album is designed to be “shockingly menacing and brutal.” With guttural lows, eerie atmospheres, and crushing riffage, Hymns In Dissonance is poised to be one of the heaviest releases of 2024. In this week's episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, we sit down with Ben Savage to break down the album's concept, the band's unique approach to songwriting, and what went into crafting this monstrous new record. The Concept Behind Hymns In Dissonance Unlike their previous album, Kin (2021), which explored deeply personal themes, Hymns In Dissonance is a concept album centered around a cult leader gathering followers to commit heinous acts in worship of their dark lord. Frontman Phil Bozeman describes the album's title as a direct contradiction: “Hymns are melodious and harmonious. Dissonance is the opposite. Dissonance represents evil. These tracks serve as hymns for the cult, each one symbolizing a deadly sin.” The record follows a 10-track journey that builds upon Whitechapel's legacy while introducing some of their lowest tunings and most intricate guitar work yet. Whitechapel's Heaviest Riffs Yet? One of the most exciting elements of Hymns In Dissonance is its brutal guitar work. In the interview, Ben Savage breaks down how Whitechapel pushed their sound further than ever before. One key highlight is the album's title track, which drops to Drop F tuning in its final breakdown—the lowest tuning Whitechapel has ever used. According to Wade, the shift in tuning helps create an “overwhelmingly crushing” finale that fans will undoubtedly feel in their bones. The album's lead single, “A Visceral Retch,” was the first taste of this new sound, immediately receiving high praise from fans for its sheer intensity. The Making of Hymns In Dissonance Unlike previous albums, the writing and recording process for Hymns In Dissonance was entirely in-house, with Zach Householder handling production duties. Having worked closely with producer Mark Lewis over the years, Householder was able to bring his deep understanding of Whitechapel's sound into the production process, ensuring maximum impact with every track. Savage also discusses how the band approached writing in a structured, weekday-only schedule, which allowed them to stay focused while avoiding burnout. Whitechapel's Hymns In Dissonance North American Tour With the album set to drop on March 7, Whitechapel is gearing up for a massive North American tour in support of Hymns In Dissonance. The month-long trek kicks off on March 18 in Raleigh, NC, and wraps up on April 19 in Atlanta, GA. They'll be joined by an absolutely stacked lineup, featuring: Brand of Sacrifice 200 Stab Wounds Alluvial With this kind of brutal tour package, fans can expect a nonstop assault of heavy music every single night. Tickets are available now, and if Whitechapel's past performances are anything to go by, this is not a show you'll want to miss. Listen to the Full Interview with Ben Savage We cover all of this and more in this week's Loaded Radio Podcast, where Ben Savage opens up about his biggest musical influences, his favorite records of all time, and what makes Hymns In Dissonance such a special album for Whitechapel.

While his teenage classmates were getting ready for school, then-13-year-old Sean Swarner was watching the water rise in the shower, his hair clogging the drain. His first cancer diagnosis—and the subsequent treatment regimen—took an immense toll on his self-image and well-being. That morning in the shower, he remembers, all of the fear and despair overcame him: Sean collapsed to his knees, tears and tap water streaming down his face. “I remember looking at myself in the mirror,” he recalls, “and I couldn't even recognize who was looking back.” After a year of treatment, Sean reached remission. But then, two years later—during a follow-up with his oncologist—Sean and his parents received shocking news. His doctor had found a second cancer: an Askin sarcoma, a rare and aggressive tumor in his chest that eventually left him with only one functioning lung. Worse still, Sean's chances of survival appeared slim. In the years to follow, Sean became the first cancer survivor to summit Mount Everest, before eventually completing each of the world's Seven Summits (the highest mountains on each of the seven continents). That includes three attempts on Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America and one of the world's most dangerous—ultimately reaching the summit in 2017. “In my mind,” Sean recalls, “I kind of jokingly thought to myself, ‘If this fool who's had two cancers and has one lung can climb to the top of the world, that might inspire some people.'” In this episode of Your Stories, Sean joins host Dr. Mark Lewis to discuss how conquering cancer shaped his life and set him on a course to complete some of the world's most prized adventuring achievements. He also talks candidly about the motivations behind these achievements and his hope that others will look at his accomplishments and take away a simple message: If a guy with one lung can do it, so can you.

Every 14 seconds, someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, making it one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in the world, second only to lung cancer, and the leading cause of cancer-related death among women globally. And, while a cancer diagnosis can be devastating for anyone of any age or gender, one group faces a particularly unique and complex set of challenges: young working mothers. It's a reality that Irish patient Aisling O'Brien knows all too well. Aisling spent most of 2023 undergoing numerous rounds of treatment—including breast-conserving surgery right before the winter holidays—all while parenting three young children. “I'm slowly getting back to what is now my new normal,” says Aisling, now that she's through treatment and cancer-free. “It's given me a lot of perspective. I don't sweat the small stuff. I don't get nervous about things anymore, because what's the worst that could happen? It's shown me that I have a strength that I never knew I had.” It helped that Aisling had a medical oncologist who was there to support her and her family every step of the way: Dr. Michaela Higgins. A two-time Conquer Cancer grant recipient based at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Higgins has led numerous clinical trials for patients with breast cancer, helping to advance new treatments and cures. In this Your Stories episode, Aisling and Dr. Higgins join host Dr. Mark Lewis for a conversation about the many challenges that come with balancing motherhood and breast cancer, along with the promising future of breast cancer research and care.
Ojai's newest performing venue will be the site of a special benefit for veterans, "Heroes Healing: Songs from the Wilderness," on November 2 from 3 to 7 pm. It's being organized by Open Circle Foundation and Heroes Healing Homestead in Homer, Alaska, to provide a wilderness therapy experience for veterans suffering from service-related PTSD. Joining us on the podcast are Open Circle's founder Miriam Jones and Heroes Healing's Atz Kilcher. If that name sounds familiar, it should. Kilcher was the star of Discovery Channel's "Alaska: The Last Frontier," for 12 seasons. He is also the father of Jewel, the singer-songwriter who has sold 30 million albums. She got her Grammy-nominated start as a young child playing in a duo with her father, who is a well-known songwriter and yodeler in his own right. Kilcher has several connections to Ojai. His mother spent several months here when he was a teenager, leaving him to "hold down the fort" at the family homestead in Kachemak Bay in Homer, Alaska, and he is well acquainted with the numerous contingent of Ojai residents who also homesteaded in Homer (see Mark Lewis' story "O Pioneers!" in the Fall 2019 issue of Ojai Quarterly). The November 2nd concert will take place at the brand-new Topa Bowl in upper Ojai at the Topa Institute. Also on the bill are Andrew Wiscombe, Stephen Covell, and Kate & Secily Anderson. The event will also feature storytelling, crafts, food and more. Operation Encore is another key organizer for this event, helping develop veterans who are musicians through performances and recording opportunities. Open Circle connects veterans and other at-need people with the wilderness for restoring purpose and a sense of community. Kilcher and Jones talked about how this event came together through a fortuitous encounter with Jones and her co-founder in Alaska, Kilcher's Vietnam experiences, why tje wilderness is essential for mental health, what it's like to live on a rugged homestead while being filmed for more than a decade, and their various journeys that led up to this moment. We did not talk about Aztec death whistles, mah jongg or the Japanese royal family. For Mark Lewis, MD, cancer has defined his entire life. Growing up, he witnessed his father's valiant struggle with cancer before it eventually ended his life. While still in medical training, he not only developed pancreatic cancer but also discovered the culprit. Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, an inherited syndrome that drastically increases one's risk of cancers, runs in his family. So now, as a father, he guides his son in making sense of a life burdened with that risk. What's more, as an oncologist, Dr. Lewis has also dedicated his professional life to understanding and treating cancers of the gastrointestinal system. In this deeply personal conversation filled with pathos, wisdom, and hope, Dr. Lewis shares how he learned to cope with the rage he felt towards cancer in his early years, the solace he finds in religion and how he tactfully approaches matters of spirituality with his patients, how he was fundamentally transformed after undergoing the daunting Whipple surgical procedure, the wonder he feels when considering the remarkable progress science has made in cancer therapies, and how he channels his personal experiences to connect with patients. This is an episode that paints a portrait of grace, resilience, and courage in the face of suffering and loss, and it reminds us to search for the dignity that is inherent in the act of caring for another person. In this episode, you'll hear about: 2:43 - How watching his father deal with cancer led Dr. Lewis to a career in medicine.7:04 - How Dr. Lewis managed the grief and rage that came with his father's passing. 11:10 - How the speed of medical innovation drives Dr. Lewis' optimism. 19:51 - The role that faith plays in Dr. Lewis' work and in his relationships with patients.29:07 - Dr. Lewis' experience as a cancer patient and how it has informed his work as an oncologist. 39:21 - The ethical challenges involved in administering toxic treatments in oncology. 42:24 - The deeper meaning that Dr. Lewis has found through his experiences at the intersection of science and faith. 48:57 - Dr. Lewis' advice for empathizing and connecting with patients. Not only does cancer predate the practice of medicine, but it may also predate the human species entirely. In 2016, archeologists in South Africa unearthed a large 1.7 million years-old bone fragment, ultimately revealed to be the toe bone of an ancient but unknown species of human dating back millennia. On that piece of bone, they discovered something else: a malignant tumor. It's a stark reminder that, for as long as their profession has existed, oncologists have been studying and treating cancer. For many, it raises a frustrating question: After so many centuries of studying cancer, why haven't we cured it yet? The answer is complicated. Dr. Otis Brawley joins the Your Stories podcast to help us better understand what makes cancer such a complex and persistent adversary. In addition to being a professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins University and a former chief medical and scientific officer of the American Cancer Society, Dr. Brawley is a member of Conquer Cancer's Board of Directors and editor of The Cancer History Project, a free online resource dedicated to documenting the history of cancer in medicine. He talks with host Dr. Mark Lewis about why cancer has not yet been “cured” and about how our study and understanding of it has evolved over time.

“A negotiated peace is better than a war without end,” said Pope Francis in an exclusive interview with CBS Evening News anchor Norah O'Donnell, marking the first such interview for network television in the U.S. Amid conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, the pope advocated for global peace. The full interview airs on CBS 60 Minutes this Sunday, covering topics such as child welfare, women's roles, L.G.B.T.Q. ministry and speculation on the pope's resignation. Recording “Inside the Vatican” live from Buenos Aires, host Colleen Dulle reflects on her visit to the pope's homeland, which has given her a deeper understanding of his emphasis on “being amongst the people,” she says, and his belief that “you can't do theology behind a desk.” She highlights the vibrant lay ministry in Argentina and the impact of the newly instituted ministry of catechist, which she's now seen in action firsthand. Later, Gerry shares insights from his interview with Mark Lewis, S.J., who will lead the newly merged Gregorian University. The integration of the Biblical and Oriental Institutes with the Gregorian under Father Lewis' leadership marks a historic first step by the Jesuits in the effort for greater synergy and collaboration among the pontifical institutions in Rome. Picture it, if you will. The cooling tower is running like normal. As water flows, recirculates, and evaporates, we see the conductivity continues to increase. Then it happens. The conductivity reaches its setpoint on the controller. Then what? Seriously, what literally happens next? Does the controller immediately send a signal to the blowdown valve to open up? How does the controller's deadband or differential or whatever your controller manufacturer chooses to call it come into play? The controller uses a deadband so the blowdown valve does not try to chatter open and close as the conductivity fluctuates from being EXACTLY on the setpoint to NOT being exactly on the setpoint. Such chatter trying to open and close the valve could very quickly wear a valve out as well as the relays in the controller itself. Plus, the valves may not even be given enough time to reach their minimum energize times. Does the deadband sandwich your conductivity setpoint or is it a one-way setup where it starts at the setpoint? For example, if your conductivity setpoint is 1,000 microsiemens and your deadband is 100 microsiemens, would your blowdown valve first open at 1,000 or 1,050 microsiemens? This will depend upon your setup in the controller and the options the manufacturer has made available to you. Another point to consider is whether any biocide lockout timers are currently active which would prevent the cooling tower from blowing down during a biocide application. Once your blowdown valve is actually open, though, does the cooling tower conductivity start to drop IMMEDIATELY? Have you ever thought about this before? The answer is, actually, it probably does NOT start dropping immediately. The conductivity may even continue to rise until enough water has been removed from the system to drop the level low enough to trigger the makeup water valve to open. As fresh makeup water starts flowing, it will dilute the cooling tower water, and THIS is when the conductivity will begin to drop. Next, how low will the conductivity drop until the controller closes the blowdown valve? This is where the deadband or differential will come into play again. In our previous example of a conductivity setpoint of 1,000 microsiemens and a deadband of 100 microsiemens, when the conductivity drops to 900 microsiemens, the controller closes the blowdown valve, and the overall conductivity pattern repeats itself. As you can see, the control of conductivity in a cooling tower is not as simple as opening and closing a valve. There are design considerations to limit the wear and tear on the blowdown valve plus the reality of having to trigger makeup water flow as the water level lowers for the conductivity to actually start to drop. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Athlete, professional climber, reality show participant, competitor, physician, and cancer survivor: Favia Dubyk embodies the definition of conqueror. But facing advanced-stage lymphoma during her second year of medical school caused a major setback in Favia's athletic life. Surgical treatment and chemotherapy had devastating effects on her identity as an expert rock climber: She had gone from ascending boulders to struggling just to open her fridge. It took Favia years of dedicated training to reach and surpass her baseline level of fitness. Even today, as an alum of extreme sports competition shows like NBC's American Ninja Warrior and USA's Race to Survive Alaska, Favia continues to feel the effects of conquering late-stage lymphoma and grueling cancer treatments. In this episode of Your Stories, Favia tells Dr. Mark Lewis – who also received a cancer diagnosis while in medical training – about the experience of surviving cancer as a professional athlete. She encourages oncology providers to better understand their patients' aspirations in life and tailor treatment plans based on those goals. Favia also discusses what kinds of emotional support she found most helpful during treatment, what drives her as a cancer pathologist to help patients make sense of their medical results, and why it matters for people conquering cancer to appreciate the little things in life.

The saying "give a damn" is interesting. Who are you giving it to? To give a damn is a good thing, but does that mean it's also good to take a damn? Also, how many times can you say "damn" before it starts sounding like a made-up word? Let's find out if the answer is five: Mark wrote a book called Give A Damn, which is basically what Tom has been saying on a daily basis for the past few years condensed into book form. Will we ever get along? What do we do about all this hatred? And what the hell is a Cap Snaffler? Disclaimer: we can't guarantee that last one is actually in the book.
