"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Send us a textMike McCartney opens the door to his extraordinary life with warmth, humor, and profound insight in this captivating conversation. The renowned photographer, musician, and cultural storyteller shares intimate tales of growing up in post-war Liverpool, revealing how losing his mother at age twelve pushed him toward creativity as both salvation and expression. With classic Liverpudlian wit, Mike recounts discovering photography through a failed attempt to capture "giant seagulls" with the family box camera, leading to a self-taught journey that would eventually see his work acquired by the National Portrait Gallery. Parallel to this, we hear the origin story of The Scaffold and their hit "Thank You Very Much," which became an unexpected royal favorite (though the Queen Mother might have misheard a Liverpool FC reference as a tribute to herself).Between laughter and occasional moments of raw emotion, Mike illuminates the cultural revolution of the 1960s, describing how art confronted class divisions and opened minds. His stories meander through chance encounters with figures like Marlon Brando, Salvador Dalí's surrealist influence, and pivotal moments that altered his trajectory—including breaking his arm, which led to his brother Paul taking over his drum kit.The conversation deepens as Mike reflects on legacy, suggesting that bringing joy to others through creative work may be our most meaningful contribution. His philosophy emerges: seek what you love, embrace serendipity, and never underestimate the power of gentle subversion—like hiding anti-war sentiment in a cheerful pop song that reached number four in the charts.Discover the remarkable story behind the man who documented a generation while helping shape its soundtrack. Mike's upcoming limited edition photography book "Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool" and the Scaffold box set releasing in April promise to further preserve this vital cultural legacy.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Crime Capsule is happy to introduce you to a new Evergreen Podcasts show, Something About the Beatles, from David Whelan. He was a successful documentary writer and producer in the UK when, as COVID hit, he began looking into the murder of John Lennon, prompted by a podcast interview he heard. What he discovered quickly led him into a four-year investigation, as he talked with witnesses who had never before spoken publicly. About Something About The Beatles All episodes of SATB feature conversations. Sometimes they are with Beatles authorities: writers or academics who've done the research and come up with a thesis. Others are with folks in the business: musicians who were inspired by The Beatles and who've walked the walk – written songs, recorded records, gone on tour. They know the ins and outs of Beatles music. Then there are the Beatle witnesses: folks who knew the individual Beatles well, either by direct family relations (Mike McCartney, Jenny Boyd), working directly for The Beatles (Kevin Harrington, Chris O'Dell, Ken Mansfield, Chris Thomas, Alan Parsons, John Leckie, Tony King, and so forth) or else spending considerable time in their world (journalist Ray Connolly, photographer Ethan Russell, journalist Ivor Davis, photographer Tom Murray, filmmaker Paul Saltzman, Nancy Lee Andrews, May Pang, and so forth). These people come to SATB to share their insights and observations, bringing us that much closer to the world The Beatles created. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

WBCQ/The Planet airdate - 2/10/24 Welcome to Fluxedo Junction! Each episode we bring you the best music of all genres from throughout the world, and this week we'll be speaking with artist and photographer Mike McCartney. Having worked under the name Mike McGear in the 1960's to distinguish himself from his brother, Paul McCartney of The Beatles, Mike became a key part of the satire boom in the U.K. with the poetry-comedy-musical groups The Scaffold and Grimms. He enjoyed a successful musical career throughout the 60's and 70's, but photography was always his first love. His new book, Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool, is a celebration of the city where it all started for him, and it's currently available through Genesis Publishing.
SUMMARY Unseen Paul builds on our earlier episodes by sharing even more quotes, stories, and insights about young Paul McCartney, who deserves a nuanced and dynamic portrait in any Beatles biography. We explore some of his more overlooked character traits: his quirks and gifts; his stressors and anxieties; his unusual interests and values. These features reveal him as a fascinatingly dualistic artist and person. SYNOPSIS: This episode explores Tune In's unequal treatment of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhoods, with particular attention paid to the disparate coverage of their childhood stressors and the deaths of their mothers, Julia and Mary. SYNOPSIS: In Creative Whirlwind, we take a look at how Tune In reports and characterizes young Lennon and McCartney as budding artists. We'll show that Tune In significantly downplays and shortchanges (and sometimes even ignores) crucial aspects of McCartney's artistic development and identity. On the other hand, Lennon's creative development is shown from all angles in loving detail and with unbridled admiration. Our discussion will be divided into three major sections: Visual Arts, Literature and Musical Self-Expression. So you'll hear from the likes of Al Murray, David Quantick, Mike McCartney, Griff Rhys Jones, Margaret Cabourn-Smith and Mike Fenton Stevens as well as many others PLUS some never-before-heard material! The Browns are signing quarterback Joshua Dobbs back to the team on a one-year deal, Dobbs's agent Mike McCartney announced on Tuesday Dobbs was signed to a one-year deal with the Browns last April, in which he played as Jacoby Brissett's backup quarterback until he was waived on Nov. 28, after Deshaun Watson returned to the team after his suspension. Watson missed 11 games last season due to violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The investigation came after a total of 26 civil complaints were filed against Watson, describing graphic accounts of sexual harassment and sexual assault. Now Dobbs will backup Watson after Brissett signed with the Commanders last week. Dobbs has yet to make his Browns debut as he never took the field last season for Cleveland. Dobbs started two games for the Titans after he was picked up in December. The Titans lost both games, in which Dobbs completed 40 of 68 pass attempts for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Prior to last season, Dobbs played two seasons on the Steelers as a backup quarterback to Ben Roethlisberger. Dobbs has appeared in eight games over the course of his pro career. The Cleveland Browns have added another depth piece in NFL free agency, this time retaining another one of their own in linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk. This now puts the Browns at ten signings through the first week of free agency as they signed both Kunaszyk and tight end Jordan Akins this weekend. Kunaszyk spent most of his time on special teams with the Browns, racking up 316 snaps in the third phase of the game. According to PFF, Kunaszyk was graded as an elite special teamer in 2022. However, after three linebackers suffered season-ending injuries a year ago as well, Kunaszyk stepped in reserve at the second level of their defense as well. At just a one-year deal worth just over $1.2 million (with $500k guaranteed), this is a no-brainer move for the Browns as they continue to make sure they have depth to their roster.Cleveland Browns have signed cornerback Mike Ford to a deal, a former Atlanta Falcons cornerback. Cleveland Browns look to have added another defender during free agency. Cornerback Mike Ford appears to be heading to the Browns and it looks to be a special team signing, with the potential to be depth on defense. Ford spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, where he played in 17 games and made two starts. Ford played 83 percent of the Falcons special teams snaps and 15 tackles and one tackle for a loss. Ford has background of playing in the slot and could provide cleveland with depth there and as their fifth cornerback. Ford is still 27 years old and this will be his fourth NFL team. It looks like Ford could pair with Bubba Ventrone's special teams unit and have the chance to prove himself there.#BrownsBuilt BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The most powerful introductions you will ever receive are those where someone else makes the introduction in person. The trick is that most people don't think to do this and so at best you receive a tepid email introduction. Join Debby and Greg as they discuss the importance of the personal introduction and how you can value yourself by asking for what you want. Roger McGough, John Gorman and Mike McCartney first performed together sixty years ago and very quickly found fame and success as The Scaffold, combining comedy, poetry and music. With Top 10 singles (including a Number One with Lily The Pink in 1968), a slew of acclaimed live shows, albums, television appearances and collaborations with the likes of the Bonzos (as Grimms), The Scaffold proved to be a unique creative force who could count the Queen Mum and Harold Wilson among their fans. They've reunited for a special show in October at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool: An Audience With The Scaffold (more details at: An Audience with The Scaffold | Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres (everymanplayhouse.com) ) Like many of their peers and contemporaries they were influenced by The Goons and were happy to talk about growing up listening to the show as well as later encounters with Spike Milligan. We also discover how they first got on TV, why Mike's name went through a few variations, beating Richard Burton to the bar, hobnobbing with Royalty and an explosive evening with Vivian Stanshall. Also: memories of working with Graham Nash, Jack Bruce and Elton John and the time Mike had to give musical direction to Jimi Hendrix! All this and much more!

Paul McCartney's younger brother, Mike, has just received a British Empire Medal for his services to the community of the Wirral, the peninsula across the Mersey from Liverpool.
A career Mike stumbled into has been a gift for radio listeners, Royals fans, and many others. The Kansas City native has done it all with flair and a great sense of humor. Fabulous stories and memories told with style and a smile.
Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool (Genesis Publications, 2021), brings together all of his finest work including a wealth of previously unseen photographs and treasured drawings. McCartney takes us from his very first photograph, taken with the family Kodak Brownie box camera, to experimenting with his Rollei Magic camera and finding a love in surrealism, through to capturing the Merseybeat scene in Liverpool. The venues that were at the heart of the city are all featured, including the Casbah Club, the Jacaranda Club, Hope Hall, the Tower Ballroom and the legendary Cavern Club. This signed, limited edition book reveals the secrets of the Sixties and Seventies Liverpool through McCartney's photography, illustrations, and commentary. In a commentary that is honest, revealing and often humorous, McCartney describes growing up in a post-war Liverpool and the cultural sensation that followed. McCartney shares his love of satire, poetry and music, and his experience of being there to photograph the talent that came out of Liverpool, including his own group, the Scaffold. From the Beatles to the Fourmost, and from the Roadrunners to Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, McCartney captured the local bands as well as Liverpool's poets and artists, including Adrian Henri, Sam Walsh and Maurice Cockrill, RA. In Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool the incredible visiting acts that Liverpool welcomed are also celebrated, including Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and Long John Baldry. In Episode 3, host Kevin Szczcepanski welcomes back Mike McCartney, the national director of cybersecurity for Avalon Cyber, for part two of their deep dive on ransomware. We heard from him in the last episode, but as a quick reminder, Mike's impressive career includes being a highly decorated 22-year veteran of law enforcement (NY Attorney General's office, FBI Cyber Crime Division, etc.) instrumental in the inception of the field of cybersecurity; he wrote the book that law enforcement still uses today. In this continuing conversation, “Ransomware with Mike McCartney, Part 2: Threat Landscape, Protection, and Response,” Kevin and Mike discuss the likelihood of a company being attacked (hint: it's high), what company and organizations can do to protect themselves ahead of time (talk to experts; follow best practices for policies, employee training and more). And, if and when you are attacked, what are your first steps, who do you call? Should you pay the ransom to possibly get your data back? What is required if you are in a deeply regulated field? Perk your ears up for this critical talk to learn more.
In this episode, host Kevin Szczepanski welcomes his first guest, Mike McCartney, the national director of cybersecurity for Avalon Cyber. In his intro, Kevin briefly describes Mike's impressive career as a highly decorated 22-year veteran of law enforcement (NY Attorney General's office, FBI Cyber Crime Division, etc.) who was instrumental in early days of cybersecurity, digital forensics, and internet investigations; he literally wrote the book on the subject that law enforcement still uses today. After touching on the evolution of the field since the 1990s, Kevin and Mike take a deep dive into all things ransomware, from what it actually is, to what do to if it happens to you, and how to preplan for the eventuality that it will happen. Mike has practical advice and deep insights into what he calls a “multi-tiered organized crime syndicate,” and one that is very lucrative for its perpetrators. Questions they explore include: How can you protect your systems and data? Should you pay the ransom to possibly get your data back? What are the ramifications? Are you in a deeply regulated field—what is required if your systems are hacked? Check out this crucial episode, discussed in plain talk, to learn more.
